Carl Jackson- Musical Dream Maker
Carl Jackson- Musical Dream Maker By Lee Kotick Carl Jackson is a musical architect, bridge builder, and dreamer. He’s a one of a kind man; a humble networker who enriches others’ lives. Jackson’s mantra is, “With each dream that becomes a reality, a new dream lies ahead.” Many of his dreams have come true. He’s not just a gifted musical producer, but a most influential guy who perhaps is singularly responsible for the creation of one of the major bridges between bluegrass and country from the 1960s to the present. His feet are firmly planted in both genres. Jackson’s humility would cause him to disagree with such homage. Make no mistake, bluegrass and country go together other like ham and eggs. Jackson’s body of work in bluegrass and country is unrivaled for its time period. Just as Glen Campbell and Jim and Jesse took a young banjo playing Jackson under their wings, he in turn takes on talented young artists, nurtures them and teaches them to fly on their own. As a good song must have a great title, so must dreams be built on bridges providing artists connections between episodes of their dreams. While he’s fulfilled many of his own dreams, Jackson is called to make others’ dreams come true. Our country’s greatest artists want to be affiliated with Jackson’s projects, and to a person, they clearly love and admire him. This is a man who has reached the epitome of musical production in our genres. The Man Jackson was born in 1953 in a small clinic above the Strand Theatre in Louisville, MS. -
1 PLAYING AGAINST the ROLES SCENE 1 Scene 1
PLAYING AGAINST THE ROLES SCENE 1 Scene 1. The roof of Daniel and Estrella’s old apartment complex. DANIEL: Estrella! Why did you want to meet here? We’re going to miss the party! ESTRELLA: Can you believe how much this place has changed? DANIEL: I don’t even recognize it. ESTRELLA: It’s all so… white. It used to be filled with smells and sounds and people. DANIEL: Like the sounds of my terrible violin playing. ESTRELLA: I remember the smells that came from those windows. Mi abuela cooking (She pauses and smells the air) mole and fresh tortillas, and elote, and capirotada. DANIEL and ESTRELLA: and that awful Posole. They both make a face. DANIEL: We played for hours. ESTRELLA: With my Barbies. DANIEL: They were rich. ESTRELLA: and they had a swimming pool and like 10 kids and they always fought. DANIEL: Like my mom and dad. Before he left… ESTRELLA: but remember… we would run away and sneak out. DANIEL: And just lay up here and just look at the stars. They sit in silence remembering the past. DANIEL: You know… in a new place, you can be anyone you want. ESTRELLA: Easy for you to say, ”Dannie Beckerman football star.” (She laughs to herself) DANIEL: Speaking of… that party. You promised you’d come. ESTRELLA: I know. Just one more minute. 1 Scene 2 Scene 1. Friday Night. A teenage house party. We hear bumpin music, perhaps something by Drake or Kanye. DANIEL AND ESTRELLA enter the party. There are groups of mostly McGregor High School students scattered about the room laughing and talking loudly. -
Issue 469 Motor Mouths: Country in Detroit “Detroit: Cars and Rock ‘N’ Roll
October 12, 2015, Issue 469 Motor Mouths: Country In Detroit “Detroit: Cars and Rock ‘n’ Roll. Not a bad combo.” Nice, Kid Rock. But what are either without radio? Motor City call letters including WCSX, WRIF, WOMC, WKQI, WJR, WWWW and WYCD have become famous over the years with help from Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Steve Kostan and Arthur Penhallow, National Radio Hall of Famers Dick Purtan, J.P. McCarthy, Steve Dahl and Howard Stern, and Country Radio Hall of Famer Dr. Don Carpenter, to name a few. Not a bad pedigree. PPM market No. 12 is changing, though, especially with respect to Country. For starters, CBS Radio’s WYCD got its first direct challenger in four years when Cumulus Adult Hits WDRQ adopted the company’s Nash brand in late 2013 (Breaking News 12/13/13). And just a few weeks ago Carpenter ended his 10- year WYCD morning run, which led to other on-air changes at the station (CAT 8/5). Country Aircheck details some of those and checks WDRQ’s progress here. Write On: Rosanne Cash, Mark James, Even Stevens On The Market: Detroit – Rust Belt city or city on a and Craig Wiseman were inducted into the Nashville comeback? “Detroit is on a great comeback, but there was a time Songwriters Hall Fame last night (10/11) at the 45th Anniversary Hall of Fame Gala held at the Music City where people moved out of the market,” says Center. Inside the Acms with RAC Clark Our Annual Interview with Exec
April 18, 2016, Issue 495 Inside The ACMs With RAC Clark Our annual interview with Exec. Producer RAC Clark offers insight into the 51st ACM Awards (4/3) and many of its notable performances. CA: Let’s hit the numbers first and talk about this year’s ratings... RAC: They sucked. I’ll just say that. They sucked. [Ed. Note: 11.18 million viewers, 2.3 rating/7 share]. But it was one of the more competitive nights we’ve had since being up against the American Idol finale a few years back. The Walking Dead was big. The iHeart awards didn’t rate that well, really, so I don’t think that hurt us. The Walking Dead really got us and Steve Harvey’s Little Big Shots is a new hit on NBC that actually beat us in the second half-hour at 8pm. We won the night, but ratings were down year- to-year after a spectacular year in Dallas with the 50th. When we talked to producer Robert Deaton about the CMAs, he said, “I’ve never completely understood wanting to compare us against the AMAs, Grammys, ACMs or In A Big Way: EMI/Nashville’s Eric Paslay (third Oscars.” His point was, an awards show’s competition is from right) with (l-r) WEBG (Big 95.5)/Chicago’s Erik what it’s facing that night, not something that’s airing in Zachary and Mason, EMI’s Chris Fabiani and the an entirely different month. Do you agree? station’s Steve Stewart, Alabama and Remy. (continued on page 7) ©2016 Country Aircheck™ — All rights reserved. -

THE PITIFULS Hold My Heart To The Fire LocoBop L2I-012 Malaco Records’ house band in Jackson, MS was one of the best tight knit rhythm sections that southern studios were noted for in the 1960s and ‘70s. James Stroud (drums), Carson Whitsett (keyboards), Dino Zimmerman (guitar), and Don Barrett (bass) shaped hits by ZZ Hill, Dorothy Moore, Paul Simon, Paul Davis, Little Milton, Bobby Blue Bland, Johnnie Taylor, and Eddie Floyd. In the early 1980s, Stroud seized an opportunity to work with some of Nashville’s biggest names. Barrett, Zimmerman, and Whitsett, coincidently but individually, made Nashville their home as well. No longer a unit, they independently recorded with KT Oslin, Eddie Rabbitt, Janis Ian, Kathy Mattea, BB King, Eric Clapton, Suzy Bogguss, John Mayall, and Waylon Jennings. Whitsett also collaborated with Dan Penn, Tony Joe White, and others writing hits for Solomon Burke, Lorrie Morgan, John Anderson, Joe Cocker, and Conway Twitty. THE NEXT FOOL I FORGOT TO BE YOUR LOVER In 1996, Whitsett, Zimmerman, and Barrett reunited for a CLEAN SLATE one-off project with drummer Jimmy Hyde of Eddie SMOKE FILLED ROOM Rabbitt’s band and keyboardist Gene Sisk (Sawyer Brown, LOVE AT WORK The Judds, Earl Scruggs). THEY SAY BACKSLIDIN' Don Barrett sings lead on the majority of tracks, alternating I'M GONNA LOVE YOU OUT OF HIS LIFE with the grittier Jimmy Hyde. Except for Barrett's I'm Gonna Love You Right Out Of His Life and the Soul classic I Forgot To Be Your Lover, all songs were penned by Carson Whitsett, some in tandem with Dan Penn, Larry Byrom, Gary Nicholson, and others. -
