7 ThankREAL you for all your legal questions LIFEover the last month. Our friendly LAW team of experts randomly chose to answer the following questions: I have recently been informed that I am named as an Executor in the Will of a close friend who passed away. I’m not really sure what I need to do LET US and whether or not I need to instruct a solicitor. Are you able to give me any guidance? SOLVE As an Executor, you have no legal duty to appoint a solicitor but if you YOUR choose to do so, you can work together, allowing your solicitor to take some of the burden. An Executor is responsible for administering an estate LEGAL in accordance with the Will. After a death, Executors need to gather all information relating to the estate (such as values held in bank accounts, PROBLEMS shares, and any liabilities etc.); report to HMRC; pay any inheritance tax that may be due and ensure that the estate is distributed correctly after a Grant of Probate has been obtained (where appropriate). If the estate is likely to be complex or if you foresee difficulties or complications, it may be advisable to appoint a professional to assist you. Even if you have been named as an Executor, you do not have to act and can consider renouncing your position or opting to have power reserved if you think it would be more appropriate. We would be happy to have a brief telephone conversation to discuss your circumstances, following which you can decide whether or not to meet to progress matters further. Please call our Private Client Solicitor, Samantha Borek, on 01264 333336 or email sborek@ middletonssolicitors.co.uk. My Father is 82 and is starting to struggle when it comes to making decisions about his money. I’ve heard you can get a Power of Attorney but I don’t really know what this is or how my Father would use it? A Power of Attorney is a legal document which your Father can use to appoint another person or persons, giving them authority to make certain decisions on his behalf. This would allow your Father to appoint an attorney who can continue to act on his behalf even if he later lost capacity to make decisions for himself. There are two types of power and your Father can opt to make either, or both, of them. Lasting Power of Attorney for Property & Financial Affairs gives attorneys authority to deal with property and finances generally or as restricted by your Father. This could be used by you with his instructions now, but also at your instigation if he is unable to make a decision for himself. From the information you have provided this may be the most appropriate solution, but he may also wish to make a Lasting Power of Attorney for Health & Welfare, giving attorneys power to make welfare and health care decisions. For more information, you can email us at [email protected].

9 I have missing teeth, what can I fill the gap with? By Chloe Chen, Dental hygienist at New Street Dental Care, Andover Quality of life is important to us all and so is our appearance. There will be many of us finding it embarrassing to smile or even enjoy our food because of missing teeth. This can have an effect on our social and work life reducing our personal potential, impact and confidence. There can be hidden consequences of missing teeth that you may not have thought of, but there are options to choose from that can help get you smiling again with confidence! A dentist can discuss them with you to find out what is the most suitable treatment and may depend on how many teeth are missing, where they are missing and the health of your other teeth and bone. So, what can we do with our missing teeth? 1. Do nothing This cheapest short-term option may end up being more expensive due to some after-effects of missing teeth. The teeth either side of the missing one can drift to try and touch each other which can trap food in-between and increases your risk of tooth decay and gum disease. This also changes the way that your teeth meet and can make chewing difficult. Over time, our body removes the bone where the tooth used to be as it is no longer needed (bone resorption) and can make it more difficult to replace the missing tooth. 2. Denture A denture can replace a few missing teeth and is called a partial denture. The dentist takes impressions of your mouth to make sure it will fit correctly, and they will match it to the colour of your natural teeth so that people may not even notice it. The tooth is usually made of plastic (acrylic) but the rest is made from plastic, metal or a mixture of both. It is important to choose the right type for you and so finding a dentist that can offer all the different types will pay off in the end. 3. Fixed Bridge This involves making one or both teeth either side of the gap smaller, so a crown can fit over them, the replacement tooth is attached to the crown and suspends between the gap. If the teeth either side of the gap are healthy and can take the weight of supporting the missing tooth, this is an option. Looking after the bridge is very important, keeping it clean and getting it checked regularly by your dentist will help it last as long as possible. Not all bridges will last the rest of your life and should the teeth crumble under the bridge you may end up losing more teeth requiring a longer bridge, a denture or implants. Again ensure your dentist explains and discusses with you all the different types of bridge available so that you end up with the best one. 4. Implants Dental implants are the next best thing to having your own teeth back and are placed by a dentist with the appropriate qualification. As it is a very complex procedure, it is likely to be the most expensive option and not everyone will be suitable. The implant is placed by putting a screw into the jawbone. This then heals, and the bone can grow around the screw. After about 3-6 months a crown is either cemented or screwed on top. This also looks the most like a real tooth and sometimes only a dentist can tell it is there. Implants can also be used to fix a bridge or denture, so you do not need to take the denture out. Not all dentists can offer this, so you may find that they will refer you to an implantologist or recommend a local dentist that can do this procedure for you. If you would like more information, then please do not hesitate to call us on 01264 301301 or email [email protected] and our friendly staff can help.

13 Community News It has been busy year so far! The events attended: Armed Forces Day in Andover and Tidworth, the Carnival; a few community school events and Andover Community Day on 10th July, when students from Winton Academy art classes painted a mural on the workshop wall. We have taken on one full time and one part time volunteer. Bear, who deals with parts ordering, customer bookings, quotes, welcoming customers and Phil, who attends part time and assists in the workshop with project work and some training. Both have been a welcome help in distributing the load of running the workshop, especially as business is still steadily increasing. There are also more volunteers working in the background, dealing with event bookings, publications, grant research and grant applications. These volunteers are important to help expand the workshop, helping to finance courses, equipment and hopefully employ another Master Technician by the end of this year. Supporting us by being a customer is something we truly appreciate!!!! Thank you! You find us at: Unit 3, Queensway, Walworth Ind. Estate, Andover, SP10 5LG

14 www.mlggazettes.co.uk Chandler’s Ford 023 80270606 Community News Cyclists in Wessex urged to ‘get on their bikes’ “Get on your bike!” That’s the message from a Wessex heart charity, which is urging people to saddle up and take part in its third annual cycle challenge. The Wessex Heartbeat Cycle Challenge is set to take place on 30th September and those behind the event are urging cyclists in Wessex to pull on the Lycra and get involved. Back by popular demand, the event features two different distances; a 40 mile route or a 70 miler for those really looking to push themselves. Both start and finish in the grounds of Hampshire Collegiate School in Wellow and go through the market town of , over to Winchester and through the to Stockbridge. The shorter route travels back through , and back to the school. The longer route travels over to Winterslow, Old Sarum before reaching Salisbury and then follows a route through Alderbury, West Dean before finally arriving back at Romsey. John Munro, chief executive of Wessex Heartbeat, said: “With the great weather we’ve been having lately we’ve seen hundreds of cyclists out and about around Wessex. We’re throwing down the gauntlet and challenging them to take part. With the event taking place in September, there’s plenty of time left to train and it’ll be a fantastic way to round off the summer cycling season.” John adds that a cycle challenge is a fitting way to raise money for Wessex Heartbeat which, as well as supporting those affected by heart disease, works to improve the cardiac health of people in Wessex. “Our ultimate goal is to help reduce the number of people affected by coronary heart disease and cycling is a brilliant way of keeping fit,” he said. “If you know anyone affected by heart disease or has used the services of the Wessex Cardiac Centre at Southampton General Hospital we’d urge you to hop on your bike and join us.” Entry to the Wessex Heartbeat Cycle Challenge is just £20 for the 40 mile route and £25 for the £70 mile route. Both require a minimum £100 sponsorship for Wessex Heartbeat. To sign up call 023 80 706095 or email [email protected].

Chandler’s Ford 023 80270606 15 Community News Little green fingers at Longparish Little School The little people at Longparish Little School have been enjoying the beautiful weather by opening their very own allotment recently. Thanks to some local donations from Hillier Garden Centre, Wyevale Garden Centre and Andover Garden Buildings, the children have been busy and hard at work tending to their new plot. The launch of the new allotment, based in Longparish village, is another great way that the children have brought to life one of their recent learning topics, something that is a top priority for the team at the pre-school. Claire Nash, Longparish Little School Manager, commented: “The children have spent a whole term learning about different foods and where food comes from. Having our very own allotment that the children can look after, seemed like the perfect opportunity to really engage them in the food growing process, in a very hands on way.” Claire explained: “It’s great to see the children get so excited about planting the potatoes, carrots, strawberries, tomatoes, beans and much more. They all take turns to visit and do some jobs, then report back on progress to the rest of the children. They can’t wait to bring home their produce and make some healthy food snacks. We’re all extremely grateful for the donations that have helped make our allotment a reality”. Longparish Little School is a small, friendly, purpose built pre-school for children from 2 years and 6 months. They welcome children from the village of Longparish and the local areas including Andover, Whitchurch and St Mary Bourne. More and more brands are using sustainable materials such as ‘Woodys’. An innovative Spanish brand that uses sustainably sourced wood and where possible, biodegradable plastics in its frames and sunglasses, together with cases made of recycled cork. Each pair is custom made as no two wood cuts are the same. The British agents for the Woodys brand, who also supply the brands Fiorelli and Elizabeth Arden, are looking at their supply chain to ensure that their carbon footprint is kept to the minimum and that pollution control and sustainability are at the heart of production techniques. They are not alone in this. FREE FORM Green collection defines the ultimate green concept in eyewear. They espouse that Products made from recyclable or biodegradable materials may not be truly environment-friendly. However, the Green collection is environmentally responsible in every step from its origination, because it: • consumes the least material and requires the fewest production steps • is the first eyewear designed to minimize carbon footprint • releases no toxic materials during production Many Opticians have been recycling for years by collecting old spectacles on behalf of charities such as Vision Aid Overseas, who distribute them to poor people in many other countries that can not afford to feed themselves, let alone correct their eyesight. The emergence of these environmentally conscious brands can only be a change for the good, in a world where our impact now threatens irrevocable change to our planet and therefore our future. Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Virus (RHD) by John Chitty BVetMed CertZooMed MRCVS, Consulting at Anton Vets, Andover We have recently had several cases of RHD-2 in this area and would like to remind everyone to look at vaccinating their rabbits. As background, the classic form of RHD (RHD-1) is very virulent and has a rapid onset killing most of the infected rabbits very rapidly and often without any clinical signs before they die. Fortunately it has been quite rare in our area and the commercial vaccine is pretty effective. RHD-2 has only emerged in the last couple of years. It is widespread on the continent and appears to spreading in the UK now with sporadic cases popping up here and there. It differs from RHD-1 in that it is actually less virulent, killing approximately 20% (this is quite variable) of those infected. It has a longer incubation time and many rabbits will appear ill before they die – unfortunately, it is extremely hard to diagnose while the rabbit is still alive (we need to take liver samples at post-mortem to diagnose this). It will also affect much younger rabbits than RHD-1. So, given that it is less virulent than RHD-1 why is everyone so much more worried about this virus? Firstly because the conventional vaccine doesn't protect against the RHD-2 virus. Secondly because

44 www.mlggazettes.co.uk ill rabbits can shed the virus and be infectious to other rabbits - the longer incubation period means the virus will spread much more rapidly. In addition, recovered rabbits may shed virus for up to a month after recovery. The virus is spread in body fluids and from carcasses of dead rabbits. It is a very hardy virus and conventional cleaning will not necessarily kill it. It will also survive in the gut of scavengers that eat dead wild rabbits, so crows etc. are also carriers of virus. Contaminated flies, clothes, shoes and feeds (plants and hay) can be sources of virus, though fortunately feedstuffs are unlikely to be contaminated unless they have been in contact with a dead body. So, how can you protect your rabbit? • Avoid contact with the virus - Indoor rabbits should be safe as long as you are careful to change shoes/ clothes after walking in areas where there have been infected wild rabbits. - If kept outdoors then your rabbits should be kept away from contact with wild rabbits and carrion feeders, as well as flies. - Do not give hay from unknown sources (commercial hay is fine) and make sure that fresh feeds are not collected from areas where there have been wild rabbit deaths. - Be very careful about contact with other rabbits, especially at shows, rescue centres etc. – cleanliness is definitely the key! If you do take rabbits to a show make sure you keep these rabbits separate from others for a month after the show just in case they did meet the virus. - If getting a new rabbit do not mix with your other rabbits for at least a month just in case it is shedding virus. While quarantining your rabbits make sure you are very strict about not transferring materials from rabbit to rabbit, and also about disinfecting hands, clothes, shoes, etc. • Vaccination. Fortunately there are now vaccines available in the UK for this. The vaccine is a single dose (from 1 week old) followed by annual boosters, but cannot be given within two weeks of the conventional myxomatosis-RHD 1 vaccine. We now advise this for all rabbits living outdoors as well as any rabbit going to shows, boarding facilities, etc. In the latter cases, potential contact with other rabbits or material from them mean that we do also advise that show or boarding rabbits are now vaccinated six monthly rather than annually. If you would like to have your rabbit vaccinated, please call us at the clinic. In the meantime, please remember the usual myxomatosis injections – myxi is still the most common infectious killer of rabbits. 45 Printing Quality printing, just one of your ingredients forQuality successful printing, marketing just one communications.of your ingredients for successful marketing communications.

The live band and caller, Nigel Barrell, led the children in 10 dances, including the Trafalgar Square and Circassian Circle. The festival has been an annual event in Andover for many years now. This year saw nearly 600 primary school children from across the district come together for a celebration of dance. The children ranged from as young as 5 years up to 11 years old and came from 12 primary schools. They were joined by parents, siblings and grandparents for a picnic before the event, and then soaked up the sunshine and ice cream refreshments whilst watching the spectacular performances by the youngsters. Mrs Vant from the PE department at John Hanson said, “The event was supported by two John Hanson Young Leaders who came back into school on an inset day especially to help out. They were Ruby Hobson and Jaida Mai Pledge. Thank you so much for your help. It was a fantastic day!”

John Hanson Key Stage Three – Drama and Music Evening Recently students from Years 7, 8 and 9 at John Hanson took part in the Drama and Music evening. The evening began with a moving solo sung by Evie Lockey. The students performed plays from three of the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales which included: Ashputtel, Snow White And The Seven Dwarves and The Magic Table, The Gold Donkey & The Cudgel In A Sack. There were many strong performances from the students who attended after school rehearsals each week and had to learn many lines. Some of the plays were over twenty minutes long with some students on stage performing quite a wordy text for the duration of that time. The first two plays contained moral messages with dark undertones unlike the traditional fairy tales that we are now familiar with,

56 www.mlggazettes.co.uk Education News whereas the third play was more light hearted and comedic. Congratulations to Ben Sutton who stole the show with his goat role entertaining the audience throughout. The School Choir then took centre stage to perform two African Lullabies in harmony to the audience. Drama and Music staff Jane Michel and Mike Adams offered big congratulations and a big thank you to all the students who took part, and also to those students who supported the event applying the make-up and supervising backstage throughout the evening. Congratulations to all the students involved in what was a very successful evening of Drama and Music. Winton Community Academy Community Day – making a difference This year saw the second Winton Community Academy Community Day involving all 405 students in Years 7 – 10.The students were unbelievable ambassadors for the Academy working in residential care homes, primary schools, painting fences, picking up litter and much, much more. This year we worked

with a number of additional organisations including the Andover Foodbank and Forces Re-engineered. The aim of the day is to be altruistic, seeing things from other people's point of view and making a difference to people and places in our wider community. We certainly achieved this aim. Winton is a Community School and being at the heart of our community is really important. We are incredibly grateful to all of our sponsors and to all of the groups and organisations who worked with us on this fabulous day.
