CURRICULUM REPORT FOR SCHOOL BASED PLANNING JANUARY 2015

A. Elementary and Secondary

1. Winter 2015 AQ Courses – Trent University

2. FREE intermediate resources They are a set of math and science student books – plus more – for Grade 7 students that connect the Pan Am/Parapan Am games to grade 7 curriculum. They aren’t stand alone, but they could enhance someone’s math and or science program. Cisco is sponsoring the initiative so there is no charge.

Teachers/schools can order:  student books (one per student for math and one for science – great pictures!)  teacher resource (this can be hard copy if requested, otherwise download or refer on line (which can be a pain)  web links to things like video that shows the math or science in action  virtual field trips that a class can sign up for.

3. 5th Annual Education Technology Strategies (K-12)

4. Schools: Participate in the 2015 Day Challenge Proudly presented by the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Canada Day Challenge invites youth between 8 and 18 years old who live in Canada to express their pride in being Canadian by submitting an entry inspired by the theme STRONG. PROUD. FREE.

Enter the contest in the following categories:  DRAW IT! (submit a poster design)  SNAP IT! (submit digital photographs)  WRITE IT! (submit a piece of creative writing)

Participation can be through schools, clubs, associations, or individual interest!

Youth are encouraged to learn more about the defining moments that helped to shape our country. For example, February 15, 2015, will mark the 50th anniversary of the National Flag of Canada. This special Flag Day is the perfect opportunity to learn more about how our flag was created and what it means to us.

Prizes: Winners from across Canada will be selected for a chance to win great prizes from our partners. Winning entries will also be displayed at the Canadian Museum of History from June to September 2015.

Nine national finalists (three from each category) will win an all-expenses paid grand prize trip for two to to visit Canada’s national institutions and to celebrate Canada Day 2015 on Parliament Hill, as well as visit exciting sites in the National Capital region.

One lucky winner* in the Write It! category will be invited to spend a week in Ottawa with Encounters with Canada, Canada’s largest youth forum, to learn about Canadian institutions, explore exciting career options, develop their civic leadership skills and live an extraordinary bilingual experience! (*For participants between the ages of 14 and 17 only.)

The Canada Day Challenge is open now and will accept submissions until March 20, 2015.

8. Jayden the Jester TnN Productions is organizing a live show for a field trip located at the Georgian theatre on March 2, 3 and 4, 2015. Shows will run at 9:45 am and 1:00 pm and they are approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes in length. It is Jayden the Jester who will be presenting a Mystifying Magic show and spectacular story telling about anti-bullying as well an anti-bullying movie that will be presented on a back drop. He has successfully done shows in schools, and in theater for schools in Lambton County. It is entertaining, educational and age appropriate (4-9). The admitting price will be $8.00 per student and 5% will be going to the charity of your choice.

9. Dairy Farmers of Ontario The Dairy Farmers of Ontario offer free, curriculum linked in class presentations from Kindergarten to Grade 8. Their program is designed to link strands from the latest Ontario Curriculum (Science and Technology, Social Science, Health and Physical Education) to agriculture and facets of the dairy industry. Teachers can choose one of five topics for a presentation – information is attached regarding their program plus the appropriate curriculum links. Each presentation is about 45 minutes and is highly interactive, including discussions and hands-on activities.

10. DriveWise – The Road Ahead PSA Contest 2015 Every year DriveWise hosts a contest to get students in Simcoe County involved in the safety of our roads. 2015 marks the first year we will have a separate contest specifically for students in grades 5 to 8. The contest is a great way for students to make a difference. Students are asked to create a quarter page print ad. PSA entries target topics that constantly disrupt the safety on all of our roads; this year the topics are: distracted driving, sharing the road, and seat belt safety.

11. Passport to the Internet Student Tutorial on Digital Citizenship MediaSmarts is pleased to confirm that the Ontario Ministry of Education, on the advice of the Ontario Software Acquisition Program Advisory Committee (OSAPAC), has renewed the provincial licence for MediaSmarts' Canadian-based, classroom tutorial on digital citizenship for grade 4 to 8 students – Passport to the Internet. This licence permits students and teachers in the provincially funded school system, faculties of education, and participating First Nations schools to continue using Passport for free until October 31, 2015.

The Passport to the Internet tutorial uses simulations of this age group’s favourite online environments and activities to teach students about:

 online safety  cyberbullying  protecting their privacy  managing online relationships  authenticating online information, and  recognizing marketing ploys

14. WITS Programs – Poster Contest & Pink Shirt Day The upcoming Poster Contest is being held by the Rock Solid Foundation (the charity that helped develop the programs). Schools have the chance to win 10 prizes of $500 Chapters gift cards! The deadline to participate is March 31, 2015.

The Poster Contest could be a fun activity to do in the schools surrounding Pink Shirt Day, which is taking place on February 25, 2015. 16. Scholarship for Youth with Diabetes – 2015 Sir Frederick Banting Legacy Foundation (SFBLF) The SFBLF has expanded their programs to include support for a scholarship for youth with diabetes who are planning to move on to post-secondary education.

They are doing this as a sponsor for one scholarship within the very successful and long- standing program run by the Diabetes Hope Foundation.

Please bring this opportunity to the attention of any youth with diabetes that you may know and who are in their final year of secondary education.
