hile May is an incredibly busy month, it is also highly rewarding as we graduate another class of Colonels to go forth into the world prepared to continue their education and to Wserve their country. My belief that “CovCath offers something for everyone” is reinforced as I go from event to event, impressed with the diverse interests, talents, and personalities possessed by our students. Among these graduates are future engineers, musicians and community leaders, as well as those who will dedicate their lives to serving others. And while each student is distinctly individual, they are nonetheless bonded together by the brotherhood that is inherent at Covington Catholic High School.

This senior class has stood out, demonstrating their intelligence, positive leadership qualities and dedication to service. However, it is their class spirit demonstrated among their fellow classmates and infused into the entire student body that makes them truly remarkable. Our faculty has every confidence that this graduating class will help shape the fabric of our society. In the pages to come, you will learn more about the accomplishments of the Class of 2013. I think you will agree, they will make a difference in the world.

I would like to recognize two of our valued faculty members who will be taking retirement from CCH, Ms. Alene Mosko and Mr. Jack Kaelin. Ms. Mosko has been serving CovCath for twelve years as freshman English teacher and assistant director in the theater productions. Her commitment to the students was strong and sincere. She will be greatly missed, but we wish her all the best as she begins her new and precious role as caregiver to her grandchildren.

No stranger to any CovCath alum, Mr. Kaelin has been a dedicated fixture in the only school where he has worked for fifty years. He has been the German and economics teacher, coach, athletic director, alumni director and scorekeeper. He has impacted thousands. Mr. Kaelin has been a dedicated teacher to his students and mentor to his colleagues as the attendance at his retirement party attested. Thank you, Mr. Kaelin, for your service. Covington Catholic will not be the same without you.

I am grateful to all our faculty, staff, parents, friends and alumni who have made the 2012-13 school year an incredible experience. Because of you, our students can pursue individual interests while receiving an excellent academic experience in a faith-based environment that is distinctly Catholic in its very fiber. Your support of our mission and endeavors enables CovCath to offer the very best secondary experience possible. And as this year’s Annual Appeal draws to a close, I want to acknowledge those who support CovCath financially or with gifts-in-kind. We will recognize you by name and publicly thank you for your support in the fall issue of the Journal.

God bless you. Please keep us in your prayers as you will be in ours.

Covington Catholic Journal 1 Feature StorY Jack Kaelin A BIG DAY FOR JACK SCHOLARSHIP FUND Mr. Jack Kaelin retired this May after fifty years of service to the Covington Catholic Community. A party was held in his honor on Friday, May 3. It was Anonymous Mr. & Mrs. Michael C. Arnold a great night and a great party for a great man, and it began with a speech Mr. Thomas W. Arnold delivered by athletic director and longtime friend, Mike Guidugli. Mr. & Mrs. Tony Barczak Excerpts from that speech follow. Mr. & Mrs. Daniel M. Barczak Mr. & Mrs. Richard T. Berger Ms. Lynne M. Blankenbuehler Mr. & Mrs. Terry R. Boehmker I was asked to give an overview of Jack’s fifty years at CCH. I’m not sure exactly how to do that and Mr. Reid Butler give the man the credit he is due. My first thoughts were simply to be as respectful as possible and Mr. & Mrs. James Cahill not make it a roast. Anyone that has accomplished what Jack has accomplished and done what Jack Mr. & Mrs. John P. Cahill has done for fifty years deserves nothing but praise and accolades. Of course, another reason to be Mr. & Mrs. Christopher J. Chase respectful has to do with one of the phrases Jack so often likes to say, “I don’t get mad; I just get even,” Mr. & Mrs. Gary Cooper and, he does have the microphone last. Ms. Kathy Crail However, without breaking my promise, I did find some irony when I Mr. & Mrs. Stephen J. Crush opened the morning papter to this headline, A BIG DAY FOR A BIG Mr. & Mrs. David L. Cummings BOY, referring to an article on Frisch’s Big Boy restaurants and including a Man in the CovCath community, Dr. & Mrs. Michael D. Cummings picture of the Big Boy. Jack, you are a Big Dr. & Mrs. William Danneman and I use that term with the utmost respect, and it is a Big Day. Park Hills Mr. & Mrs. William J. Davis even declared today Jack Kaelin Day. Special Olympics ovington Catholic has been a proud supporter of Special Olympics assisting at various events throughout the year including a ski outing at CPerfect North in January and the Track and Field competition in April. It means a great deal to the Special Olympians to have the Colonels beside them. MENTORS Nik Knipper and Cameron Stansberry, both graduated seniors, were interviewed by Amy Scalf for the Community Recorder for a story about the service program at CovCath. Nik and Cameron were two of the sixty-seven CCH students who tutored throughout the school year at local grade schools, both Catholic and public. Nik and Cameron tutor weekly at Prince of Peace School and are pictured with Ross Halverstadt (far left) and Ben Wilson. Ross said, “Having Nik as a tutor makes studying fun.”

Ms. Lauren Young with Catholic Charities, sent a letter to Superintendent Mike Clines in April specifically to say how impressed she was with CovCath’s commitment to service and, in particular, the dedication of its students. “I’ve met almost all the teens in the VolunTEEN program and the young men of Covington Catholic are outstanding, especially their commitment to their mentees Liem Le ’13 Sam Romes ’16 in the Reach and Teach program.”

Covington Catholic Journal 23 From the Alumni Director Richard Dickmann ’80 Another class of Colonels has graduated, and our alumni base has increased by 122. The incoming freshman class is expected to exceed 160 students! Did you know, of last year’s student population of 529, only 151 were sons of alumni? Just 28.5%. Because of the commitment of so many local families to send their sons to CovCath, the Colonel Community has grown to over 40,000 people with ties to CCH, in addition to our 8000 alums. These nearly 50,000 members are proud to call themselves Colonels, and it shows.

This year marked the 50th anniversary of the Colonel of the Year award that is given to a member of the senior class. Will Henry was awarded the 2013 distinction, and as you may suspect, he is the fiftieth student to receive this award. What you may not know is that the Class of 1992 awarded two students this honor and the Class of 1971 awarded none.*

Covington Catholic has gone through many changes over the years, and the Colonel experience has been very much a reflection of the times. The Class of 1971 had 197 students, two of which are my brothers-in-law. Each of my brothers-in-law traveled different paths through high school, yet both ended up being very successful businessmen and great husbands and fathers. In speaking with them, the open campus concept of the early 70s was not the best learning environment, yet they believe that the Catholic education and brotherhood associated with an all-male school generated many positive influences on their future.

With the exception of a much-improved learning environment, the members of this year’s graduating class are truly no different than that of 1971. Their character was developed within a setting that builds strong bonds and strengthens Christian beliefs to create better men. Those outside the Covington Catholic community know us for our strong academic and athletic programs. We alumni and families understand that Covington Catholic is much, much more.

Next year’s enrollment will exceed 570, the largest since the early 70s. In an unstable economic time, paying tuition for a Covington Catholic education would seem to be less of a priority. Our Colonel Community has made a big enough statement over the years to prove that Covington Catholic is not only a priority, but an investment in the character of our young men.

Over the past 88 years, Covington Catholic families have been nurtured by a Spirit that will not die, and the future is brighter than ever. We welcome all Alumni Colonels, parents, families and friends to take time to visit our campus to see the physical changes that have been made, but more importantly, to be reminded of the things that have not changed! Go Colonels!

* So why is there no Colonel of the Year from the Class of 1971? I have done some research and continue to come up empty on this question. Most of those in the Class that I speak to believe that there were quite a few candidates, but no one seems to have the answer as to why no one was selected. I ask the Class of 1971 to reflect back and send me an email not only of your experiences at Covington Catholic, but to give me your vote for the 1971 Colonel of the Year.
