LITERARY ARTS ANNUAL REPORT 2018-2019 AT LITERARY ARTS, WE BELIEVE THAT STORIES CAN CHANGE THE WORLD. Our programs help Oregonians of all ages find and share their stories. From concert hall events with acclaimed authors to open mic readings at our community space, we provide a platform for diverse voices to be heard. These shared experiences allow our audiences to gather and celebrate the power that words have in creating empowered, empathetic, and inclusive communities. Annual Report | 2018-2019 5 20,000 READERS ENGAGED Literary Arts brought world-renowned authors to engage with our local community in the concert hall and classrooms. Our season of events featured more than 150 authors whose lectures, readings, and discussions centered on important community issues—from the history of political partisanship in the United States to feminism in the 21st century. PORTLAND ARTS & LECTURES In addition to presenting to a sold-out audience at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, our five visiting authors engaged with readers and writers of all ages in the community through forum discussions with professional writers and visits with public high school students. During her time in Portland, Adichie met with students at Gresham and Jefferson high schools before her sold-out lecture. We celebrate and recognize the remarkable work being created by local writers and publishers through awards and fellowships. We also hire writers to teach workshops, and we partner with artists and organizations to host free events in our space and in the community.
