2 Literary Arts WORDS FROM THE DIRECTOR

This past year our community gathered together in groups And though we live in challenging times, there’s joy in this art, large and small looking for answers. Not the superficial or and in this work, and in being part of a community so pre-meditated answers of our polarized times, but the deeper engaged, supportive, and inspiring. answers that can only come from fiction, nonfiction, poems, and stories. Far from being afraid of difficult, sometimes With appreciation, personal, questions, our community showed up in record numbers looking for the complex answers that come from some of the greatest writers working today and the dialogue that follows.

Literary Arts continues to evolve with our community by Andrew Proctor, Executive Director [email protected] embracing literature in its many forms and presenting it in many formats, centering underrepresented voices, and fostering a new and more diverse group of young writers.

A Whale’s Heart

My

grandfather once said you can hear

a whale’s heart from over two miles

away. How much sound must dissipate

through the wavering quiet; the medium. How

large the ventricles must be.

How, in the old country, his family distilled Matthew Minicucci the petals pulled from their rose from Small Gods, 2019 winner of the garden. As drink, or drug, or perfume Stafford/Hall Award for Poetry applied to his own father’s ears each

night, before prayers; how the burns came

in a blacksmith’s fire; how small the scar

left, how easy to see then

what was lost.

OUR MISSION IS TO ENGAGE READERS, SUPPORT WRITERS, AND INSPIRE THE NEXT GENERATION WITH GREAT LITERATURE.
