Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s Counties ▼ ▼ PREVIOUS NEXT QUIT NEXT ▼ QUIT TTC_pdf_1 8/19/05 11:50 AM Page 1

The and the Potomac River form the natural outline for the five counties of Southern Maryland, Anne Arundel, Calvert, Charles, Prince George’s and St. Mary’s. These waterways have been sources of food, employment, transportation, and recreation for centuries. The first Marylanders were Paleo-Indians who hunted, fished and grew corn, peas, squash and tobacco. Most of them spoke Algonquin languages. Over 365 years ago, in November of 1633, English voyagers sailed from the Isle of Wight to establish a new colony based on religious tolerance. These settlers stepped ashore on St. Clement’s Island of St. Mary’s County, which became the birthplace of what is now known as Maryland. Land was purchased from the Wicomico Indians along the St. Mary’s River and the new settlement was christened St. Mary’s. As the colony grew, beautiful plantations, centers of commerce, waterway development and military activities carved a place in history along the shores of Southern Maryland. Colonists were quick to discover tobacco, and the region soon established its economy and based its currency on tobacco. ▼

Tobacco remained the economic agricultural keystone of the region until 2001, when in response to health concerns resulting from tobacco used for human consumption, the state of Maryland instituted a voluntary Tobacco Buyout Program to transition farmers out of tobacco production forever. As the majority of farmers have moved away from tobacco, the tobacco barns remain as distinctive and beautiful reminders of the region’s heritage. Characterized largely by vertical-hinged panels, the barns were deliberately airy, designed to allow air flow to circulate through the interior as the hung tobacco was cured. Examples of such barns can be seen along almost all the roadways in Southern Maryland. Anne Arundel County Agritourism Visit the Lost town of London in Edgewater, a once thriving tobacco port. Calvert County Agritourism Established in 1654, Calvert County is one of the oldest counties in the United States. Native peoples lived in Calvert County 9,000 years ago, according to evidence unearthed by archaeologists at Jefferson and Museum. Calvert County’s earliest identified settlers were Piscataway Indians. Indian tribes established villages at intervals along the river with the largest being at the mouth of Battle Creek. They grew corn and tobacco on rich farmlands that were to prove very attractive to colonists arriving from England in the early 1600’s.

Saint Mary’s County Agritourism

Over 365 years ago, in November of 1633, English voyagers sailed from the Isle of Wight to establish a new colony based on religious tolerance. These settlers stepped ashore on St. Clement’s Island of St. Mary’s County, which became the birthplace of what is now known as Maryland. Land was purchased from the Wicomico Indians along the St. Mary’s River and the new settlement was christened St. Mary’s, named after Mary, mother of Jesus. St. Mary’s City was the state capital until 1695, and was Maryland’s first permanent settlement.
