Writing Australians All 2013 For
Published in Agora, Journal of the History Teachers Association of Victoria, Vol 48, No 3, 2013 Writing Australians All: A History of Growing Up from the Ice Age to the Apology One morning a couple of weeks ago I was deep in the middle of writing something when I was surprised by a phone call from a radio journalist who wanted to interview me about my latest book, Australians All: A History of Growing Up from the Ice Age to the Apology. After rapidly telling me his name (so rapidly, indeed, that I didn’t quite hear it), he bowled the first question at me. It went something like this: ‘So, Nadia, is it true that you wrote Australians All because you are sick to death of the way Australian history is being taught in our schools?’ Gulp! Feeling somewhat like the man who was asked if he had stopped beating his wife, I floundered into a passionate declaration of my support and admiration for history teachers, history students, Australian history, Australian schools, and probably a few other things as well. ‘So!’ the next question hurtled down the phone line, ‘Why did you write it?’ Usually, before I do an interview, I make a little list of dot points. This time, I was caught short. Why did I write Australians All? Why did I spend nine years of my life, supporting myself without any research grants or paid employment, writing a history book that would be marketed to young Australians in the second decade of the twenty-first century — a time when kids are supposedly not interested in either (a) history or (b) books? Some twenty minutes later, when the interview came to an end, I was really pleased that I had been forced to come up with my answer spontaneously. -

COTA National Policy Forum Summary By Forum Facilitator Caroline Baum This year’s National Policy Forum was nothing short of a call to arms to fight ageism in every sector of Australian life from the workforce to aged care. Furious agreement united speakers with a sense of urgency. A common refrain permeated discussions across all sectors: ‘It’s about changing the narrative’, ‘a different lens’, ‘reframing the argument.’ Throughout the day, language was identified as a frontline component of the issue, both as key culprit and as an essential tool in the campaign. Abhorrent terms such as ‘bed blocker’ and the so-called ‘they had a fair innings’ attitude were called out, as was the supposed perception of older Australians as an ‘economic burden’ and the cause of ‘inter-generational conflict’. Comparing the increased numbers of older people to a natural disaster, as in the phrase ‘silver tsunami’ was just one example of often unconscious but common negative imagery. There was an almost unanimous acknowledgement that, except in the case of heavy physical labour, the word ‘retired’ is inadequate to express the next phase of life that older Australians experience when they stop full-time paid employment. In a modern Australia the former 'retirement' phase in life is a potentially exciting transition to new roles and a different sense of purpose, whether as a volunteer, mentor or as a so- called seniorpreneur (a ghastly term but one that illustrates the significant number of start-ups by the over 55s). An upbeat phrase borrowed from US social researchers to express this next phase is ‘encore career.’ Kirsty Nowlan’s heartfelt keynote 'Ageism faced by older people and what drives it' introduced the Benevolent Society’s spearheading of a coalition of forces for change through the EveryAGE Counts campaign (including COTA Australia as a coalition partner). -

Australians in Aspic: Picturing Charmian Clift and George Johnston’s Hydra Expatriation TANYA DALZIELL University of Western Australia PAUL GENONI Curtin University When George Johnston was speaking to Stuart Sayers, the literary editor of The Age newspaper, on the eve of the release of Clean Straw for Nothing (1969), he was keen to highlight the novel’s specific representation of expatriation. Johnston stressed that his was not ‘that banal expatriation which Barry Humphries pictures in the Aussies of Kangaroo Valley in London’s Earl’s [sic] Court.’ Instead, his novel depicts nothing less than an existential expatriation, ‘a highly subtle and complex dissolution of the human soul,’ whose reach and implication was global. ‘Expatriation is a world problem,’ Johnston is reported to have said, ‘Europe, for example, is infested with hundreds of thousands of self-imposed exiles wandering around looking for different things in different ways.’ If expatriation is a ‘problem,’ if Europe is ‘infested’ with aimless wanderers, then it also implicitly upholds Johnston’s decision to repatriate from the Greek island of Hydra and to write ‘of the thing I know most about: that is, being an Australian.’ Clean Straw for Nothing has since assumed a place as a classic account of the Australian experience of literary expatriation, recounting as it does the relationship between David Meredith and Cressida Morley, the alter-egos of Johnston and his wife Charmian Clift, and fictionalising their movement over nearly two decades from Sydney, to London, to the Aegean island of Hydra, and back to Sydney. Theories of literary expatriation have evolved in the years since Clean Straw for Nothing was published, as Australian literature has been increasingly seen to function within the context of increasingly globalised spheres of production and consumption (Dixon). -

The Sydney Morning Herald of 27 August 1925 reported the first speech given by a female Member of Parliament (hereafter MP) in New South Wales. In the Legislative Assembly on the previous day, Millicent Preston-Stanley, Nationalist Party Member for the Eastern Suburbs, created history. According to the Herald: ‘Miss Stanley proceeded to illumine the House with a few little shafts of humour. “For many years”, she said, “I have in this House looked down upon honourable members from above. And I have wondered how so many old women have managed to get here - not only to get here, but to stay here”. The Herald continued: ‘The House figuratively rocked with laughter. Miss Stanley hastened to explain herself. “I am referring”, she said amidst further laughter, “not to the physical age of the old gentlemen in question, but to their mental age, and to that obvious vacuity of mind which characterises the old gentlemen to whom I have referred”. Members obviously could not afford to manifest any deep sense of injury because of a woman’s banter. They laughed instead’. Preston-Stanley’s speech marks an important point in gender politics. It introduced female participation in the Twenty-seventh Parliament. It stands chronologically midway between the introduction of responsible government in the 1850s and the Fifty-first Parliament elected in March 1995. -

This month vice-president and secretary Jenni Woodroffe is off to the Regional Congress in Kuala Lumpur, to represent Australia and present her paper. International Children’s Book Day has been celebrated with events in three states. And we have proudly announced the new Australian Hans Christian Andersen Award nominees: Ursula Dubosarsky (writer) and Bronwyn Bancroft (illustrator). We congratulate them and wish them well now that the panel of international judges has begun reading and deliberating for HCA 2016. Please continue to support IBBY Australia’s unique activities by renewing your membership. One lucky renewing (or new) member who replies by 30 June will receive a beautiful limited edition print, the generous gift of illustrator and IBBY member Mark Wilson (see details p 13). No other organisation fulfils the vital role of showcasing Australia’s youth literature to the world. Women at Work
WOMEN AT WORK The contribution of women in the NSW Parliament has been significant, delivering positive and lasting outcomes for the development of society, politics and culture. Working with their colleagues in Government and Opposition, they have helped to drive legislative and policy review and reform, and to initiate improved parliamentary practices and procedures. In this section we examine ‘women at work’ and the ways in which women have acted as community advocates; as driving forces behind parliamentary committees; as leaders and ministers in Executive Government; through networks such as the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians Association; and through other programs, projects and networks designed to provide opportunities and encouragement to women who might be seeking an entry into politics. Community advocates From adoption practices, to same sex marriage, political donations to disability services, women have used the parliamentary arena to be a voice for their communities and to champion policies close to their hearts. Here are just some of the many ways women in Parliament have sought to deliver outcomes to benefit the community. HELEN SHAM-HO LIBERAL, THEN INDEPENDENT MEMBER OF THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL (1988 - 2003) Helen Wai-Har Sham-Ho was the first Chinese person elected to an Australian Parliament in any jurisdiction. She was Chair of both the Standing Committee on Parliamentary Privilege and Ethics, and the General Purpose Standing Committee No. 3. The latter inquired into policing in Cabramatta, and led to significant changes in policing policies in NSW. Helen originally entered Parliament as a member of the Liberal Party, but became an Independent in 1998. Born in Hong Kong, Helen migrated to Australia in 1961 and is an inspiration to culturally and linguistically diverse communities across the country. -

Women's Experimental Cinema
FILM STUDIES/WOMEN’S STUDIES BLAETZ, Women’s Experimental Cinema provides lively introductions to the work of fifteen avant- ROBIN BLAETZ, garde women filmmakers, some of whom worked as early as the 1950s and many of whom editor editor are still working today. In each essay in this collection, a leading film scholar considers a single filmmaker, supplying biographical information, analyzing various influences on her Experimental Cinema Women’s work, examining the development of her corpus, and interpreting a significant number of individual films. The essays rescue the work of critically neglected but influential women filmmakers for teaching, further study, and, hopefully, restoration and preservation. Just as importantly, they enrich the understanding of feminism in cinema and expand the ter- rain of film history, particularly the history of the American avant-garde. The essays highlight the diversity in these filmmakers’ forms and methods, covering topics such as how Marie Menken used film as a way to rethink the transition from ab- stract expressionism to Pop Art in the 1950s and 1960s, how Barbara Rubin both objecti- fied the body and investigated the filmic apparatus that enabled that objectification in her film Christmas on Earth (1963), and how Cheryl Dunye uses film to explore her own identity as a black lesbian artist. At the same time, the essays reveal commonalities, in- cluding a tendency toward documentary rather than fiction and a commitment to nonhi- erarchical, collaborative production practices. The volume’s final essay focuses explicitly on teaching women’s experimental films, addressing logistical concerns (how to acquire the films and secure proper viewing spaces) and extending the range of the book by sug- gesting alternative films for classroom use.
