  • Max Baer, Jr., He Cried and Had Nightmares Over the Incident for Decades Afterwards
    Biography He was born Maximilian Adelbert Baer in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of German immigrant Jacob Baer (1875-1938), who had a Jewish father and a Lutheran mother, and Dora Bales (1877-1938). His older sister was Fanny Baer (1905-1991), and his younger sister and brother were Bernice Baer (1911-1987) and boxer-turned actor Buddy Baer (1915-1986). His father was a butcher. The family moved to Colorado before Bernice and Buddy were born. In 1921, when Maxie was twelve, they moved to Livermore, California, to engage in cattle ranching. He often credited working as a butcher boy and carrying heavy carcasses of meat for developing his powerful shoulders. He turned professional in 1929, progressing steadily through the ranks. A ring tragedy little more than a year later almost caused him to drop out of boxing for good. Baer fought Frankie Campbell (brother of Brooklyn Dodgers Hall of Famer Adolph Camilli) on August 25, 1930 in San Francisco and knocked him out. Campbell never regained consciousness. After lying on the canvas for nearly an hour, Campbell was finally transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital where he eventually died of extensive brain hemorrages. An autopsy revealed that Baer's devastating blows had knocked Campbell's entire brain loose from the connective tissue holding it in place within his cranium. This profoundly affected Baer; according to his son, Max Baer, Jr., he cried and had nightmares over the incident for decades afterwards. He was charged with manslaughter. Although he was eventually acquitted of all charges, the California State Boxing Commission still banned him from any in-ring activity within their state for the next year.

In fact, his finest performances are perhaps his losses to Dempsey and Max Schmeling. Outspoken about his own confidence in his abilities and often surly or uncooperative in business, Jack had the talent to back up his ego. He remained a constant presence at or near the top of the heavyweight division for nearly a decade and solidified in his place in boxing lore by becoming heavyweight champion. Early Years Born Joseph Paul Zukauskas, the son of Lithuanian immigrants, Sharkey was born in Binghamton, New York but moved to Boston, Massachusetts as a young man. Sources report little of his early life until, at the outset of the First World War, teenaged Joseph repeatedly tried to enlist in the Navy. Turned down because of his age, he was not able to enlist until after the end of the war.

    Dave, Another notable brother boxing duo was Meldrick Taylor and Myron Taylor, contemporaries of Dicky Eklund and Mickey Ward. Meldrick Taylor was the 1984 Olympic gold medalist in the featherweight division and later on was the IBF junior welterweight champion and the WBA world welterweight champion. Meldrick Taylor's career included two matches with Julio Cesar Chavez, video clips of which can be found on line. Myron Taylor was a noted featherweight boxer. In 1988 Taylor fought Dominick Monaco at the Felt Forum, Madison Square Garden. I attended that fight. Taylor scored a 7-round TKO over Monaco who put up a stout defense but ultimately could not completely fend off Taylor's devastating punches. Between Benny Leonard and Lew Tendler, Max Baer and Buddy Baer, and Meldrick Taylor and Myron Taylor there is probably enough material to make several feature motion pictures. My personal favorite would be a Max Baer - Buddy Baer movie. They were two brothers, both openly identifying themselves as Jewish, who fought at a time when anti-Semitism was at its most virulent. If properly treated, their story would make a great movie. These six gentlemen, as well as Julio Cesar Chavez, Dominick Monaco, Dicky Eklund and Mickey Ward, were real-life Rocky Balboas. At the age of one, he, along with his mother and father, traveled by wagon train to Seattle Washington, via the legendary Oregon Trail where they settled in 1886. His father, Phillip Leo, a political writer, former Scout for the Union Army, Civil war veteran at age 15 and a member of Cox’s army, was the Wagon Master on the trail. In 1896, young Jack traveled to Alaska, where he met the celebrated author, Jack London, whom he discovered was also an oyster pirate in San Francisco Bay. This, and many others of London’s adventures, influenced Jack’s approach to life. London renamed Johnny McKernan, Jack Kearns, after a character he wanted to eventually write about. He thought that person might be the type of character Johnny would emulate and since the now newly named Jack Kearns’s aspirations were to be a boxer, London thought of Kearns as a tougher sounding name. Young Kearns thought the name selection was providential since he had heard from his father that their first family member emigrating from Ireland in the early 1700’s, named John Dennis McKernan also had an alias, name of John Kearns.
