Thriving in Place: where CELEBRATION NEWS everyone knows your name! By Debbie Todd

We all know it “takes a village to raise a child,” but what happens when your children have grown up and out. Most of us have thought about what our futures hold as we age: where should we live, what will we do when we can't drive - November 2016 anymore and for many folks it is inevitable that we end up in some facility away from family, friends and our stuff. Here in Celebration we have a growing program that allows those of us in the greying generation to not only remain in our homes but also allows us to remain active either volunteering or participating in fun activities. Thriving In Place offers a chance to meet and greet new people at the Monday/Friday Lunch Bunch held at the Jones room. Each day of the week there are members who meet at the Jones room for activities including board games, lectures, knitting, crafts, clipping coupons, and movies. Celebration resident Tony Gallego says, “I like going to the Monday lunches to meet new friends and visit with old friends.” Tony also appreciated it when the lunch bunch sent his wife cards to cheer her up. Tony would like to see more people participants. Apparently when you have lots of time on your hands, get involved in the program both as participants and volunteers. you can think of lots of activities that would be a great part of the program. They suggested more concerts, perhaps put on by the Jo Ann Brennan thinks, “Thriving In Place is a great idea because students from the Celebration School band or orchestra, a trip to the it’s going to allow her to stay in her home.” She was also quick movies, and field trips (I’m not sure about that one though because to add, “Thriving in Place is the best deal in town.” I still remember those trips as a school student in that old school bus) Bette Todd, my mom, thoroughly enjoys going to the Monday/Friday but nevertheless, the participants suggested shopping excursions or lunches and when I asked her what she liked best she said the people a visit to a museum. All great ideas and something to think about because they take good care of her. She really enjoys the volunteers for the future. who drive her to not only the lunches but over to the hospital or I also met Wayne and Corinne Sakaske who are not only volunteers to get her hair done. but who are also members. They love the lunches and Jones Room It’s true, in addition to the weekly activities in the Jones Room, activities, but they also enjoy the volunteer aspect of the program. there are volunteers who will take you to appointments here in town, I for one love the program because it has allowed my mom to get they will give you a call to check in with you to make sure you are okay out of her home rather than sitting alone. and they will even come and visit with you for a chat. It gets better Thriving In Place can only succeed though with the help of the though… if you need the batteries changed in your smoke detectors community with more participants and more volunteers. So as or a leaky faucet fixed, a volunteer will be happy to help. Oh, and if you nurture your children and help them grow let's not forget the you can’t get out to pick up or drop off a package or your dry cleaning, community members whose children have left the nest and are or if you need hearing aid batteries, someone can do that too. now the ones who need the help and nurturing. Please think about Recently, I had the opportunity to drop in on the lunch bunch becoming a volunteer or a member and making our community and I was bombarded with ideas for all kinds of activities for the thrive and become a place where everybody knows your name.
