NEW OR INTERESTING RECORDS OF BRAZILIAN BRYOPHYTES

Recent collections of bryophytes in Brazil made by the authors have resulted in 15 species which are believed to be new to Brazil, 3 of them are firstly reported for South America. Anastrophyllum leucocephalum (Tayl.) Steph. Minas Gerais: Serra da Mantiqueira, Itatiaia National Park, on humid rocks beside the road to Abrigo Rebou9as, 1860 m elev., 22°22'S, 44°40'W, Sept. 6, 1986, SV & V 7547, del. Vaiia. Distr.: Andean region of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and southern South America. New to Brazil. After Vana (in litt.) A. leucocephalum is not identical with A. crebrifolium (Hook. f. & Tayl.) Steph., as it is reported by Engel (1978).

Distr.: A common species in the Neotropics. In the past known under its synonyms Lejeunea pililoba Spruce [= Recfolejeunea pililoba (Spruce) Schust. = Stylolejeunea pililoba (Spruce) Evansl. In Brazil previously reported from two localities in Goias and Parana.

Myriocoleopsis puiggarii Schiffn.

Rio Grande do SuI : Vacaria, on rocks and shrubs in the Rio das Antas, 700-800 m elev., 28°53'S, 51 °8'W, July 21, 1980, DV 9336. Parana: Foz de Igua~u National Park, on rock at the bank of the Rio Igua~u about 500 m above the falls, c. per., 160 m elev., 25°38'S, 54°27'W, Feb. 3, 1988, SV 9327. This interesting hepatic is endemic to SE Brazil and previously known only from the type collection made by Puiggari in 1873 and from a second collection made by DV, both in the state of Sao Paulo (Gradstein & Vital 1975).

Triandrophyllum subtrifidum (Hook. f. & Tayl.) Fulf. & Hatch. [= Mastigobryum mutans Herz. 1925 == Bazzania mutans (Herz.) Yano]. Distr.: Widely distributed from Central America (Guatemala, Costa Rica) to southern South America (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, Falkland Islands), Tristan da Cunha, Tasmania, New Zealand (Fulford 1963 : 86-87). The single previous record from Brazil is the type of Mastigobryum mutans Herz. Yano (1984) overlooked its identification with T. trifidum (Gott.) Fulf. & Hatch. by GrolIe (1964). Distr.: Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Peru (Ochi 1980: 72-73).

Catagonium brevicaudatum C. Mull. ex Broth. Minas Gerais: Serra da Mantiqueira, Camanducaia, Monte Verde, subtropical semi-deciduos rain forest, on rock near Chapeu do Bispo, among Metzgeria spec., 1940 m elev., 22°49'S, 45°58'W, Aug. 9,1986, SV 7496 (p.p.); Caete, Pico da Piedade, in rock crevices, 1740 m elev., 19°53'S, 43°38'W, Oct. 17, 1986, SV7731, ver. Buck. Distr.: Bolivia, Colombia Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela. In Brazil there are only three reports of Santa Catarina and Itatiaia (Lin 1984).

Eccremidium floridanum Crum. Sergipe: BR 101 N of Estancia, secondary shrub, on gravelled sandy soil, 50 m elev., 11 °6'S, 37°23'W, July 12, 1987, SV & V 8719. Parana: Sanges, in broad sunlight on sandy rocky ground, covered with a thin layer of soil, 24 0 8'S, 49°26'W, July 16, 1982, DV l0711b. Distr.: This moss is not new to Brazil, but it was first reported for South America (Brazil, Bahia) in 1984 by Vital & Egunyomi (1984: 39-41). USA (Florida).

Forsstroemia producta (Hornsch.) Par. Rio Grande do Sui: Serra Gaucho near Caneia, epiphytic in rain forest, c. fr., 780 m elev., 29°19'S, 500 51 'W, Jan. 20, 1987, SV & V 8212, del. Buck. Distr.: Central and South Africa, USA, Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, China, Korea, Australia, Tasmania; in Brazil only known from a single collection from Rio Grande do SuI (Stark 1987: 169).

Tortula pagorum (Milde) De Not. Parana: Curitiba, pedestrian zone in the city-centre, epiphytic on tree trunk, 900 m elev., 25°26'S, 49°16'W, Feb. 8, 1988, SV & V 9428. Distr.: Widely distributed in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas. New to Brazil.
