NEW OR INTERESTING RECORDS OF BRAZILIAN BRYOPHYTES

Recent collections of bryophytes in made by the authors have resulted in 15 species which are believed to be new to Brazil, 3 of them are firstly reported for South America. A. leucocephalum is not identical with A. crebrifolium (Hook. f. & Tayl.) Steph., as it is reported by Engel (1978).

In Brazil previously reported from two localities in Goias and Parana.

This interesting hepatic is endemic to SE Brazil and previously known only from the type collection made by Puiggari in 1873 and from a second collection made by DV, both in the state of Sao Paulo (Gradstein & Vital 1975).

Distr.: Widely distributed from Central America (Guatemala, Costa Rica) to southern South America (Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego, Falkland Islands), Tristan da Cunha, Tasmania, New Zealand (Fulford 1963 : 86-87). The single previous record from Brazil is the type of Mastigobryum mutans Herz. Yano (1984) overlooked its identification with T. trifidum (Gott.) Fulf. & Hatch. by GrolIe (1964). Buck. Distr.: Bolivia, Colombia Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela. In Brazil there are only three reports of Santa Catarina and Itatiaia (Lin 1984).

Eccremidium floridanum Crum. Sergipe: BR 101 N of Estancia, secondary shrub, on gravelled sandy soil, 50 m elev., 11 °6'S, 37°23'W, July 12, 1987, SV & V 8719. Parana: Sanges, in broad sunlight on sandy rocky ground, covered with a thin layer of soil, 24 0 8'S, 49°26'W, July 16, 1982, DV l0711b. Distr.: This moss is not new to Brazil, but it was first reported for South America (Brazil, Bahia) in 1984 by Vital & Egunyomi (1984: 39-41). USA (Florida).

Forsstroemia producta (Hornsch.) Par. Rio Grande do Sui: Serra Gaucho near Caneia, epiphytic in rain forest, c. fr., 780 m elev., 29°19'S, 500 51 'W, Jan. 20, 1987, SV & V 8212, del. Buck. Distr.: Central and South Africa, USA, Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay, China, Korea, Australia, Tasmania; in Brazil only known from a single collection from Rio Grande do SuI (Stark 1987: 169).

Tortula pagorum (Milde) De Not. Parana: Curitiba, pedestrian zone in the city-centre, epiphytic on tree trunk, 900 m elev., 25°26'S, 49°16'W, Feb. 8, 1988, SV & V 9428. Distr.: Widely distributed in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas. New to Brazil.
