2015 VTO Press Release- Field Notes 3-18FINAL.Pages FIELD E-NOTES FOR MARCH 18, 2015 • WINNERS CIRCLE: The winners of the last three tournaments on the PGA TOUR schedule are all coming to the Valero Texas Open—Alex Cejka (Puerto Rico Open), Dustin Johnson (WGC-Cadillac Championship) and Jordan Spieth (Valspar Championship). • EXEMPTIONS EXTENDED: Several players, who were not otherwise eligible to compete in the tournament, were extended exemptions into the field the past few weeks. San Antonio’s Cameron Beckman, a three-time PGA TOUR winner, is one of these players. Another three-time winner, Johnson Wagner, who was born in Amarillo and has played each year since the move to TPC San Antonio, accepted an exemption. Tournament officials also extended an exemption to Marc Warren, a four-time winner on the European Tour who is currently ranked 51st in the world. Warren is trying to secure top 50 in the world status for an exemption into the Masters Tournament. The Valero Texas Open is the last chance players have to get into that particular category. Brandon Hagy, a celebrated collegiate player at Cal, is also in the field. Hagy has a driving distance average of 321 yards and the VTO will be his fifth start on the PGA TOUR. Andrew Loupe, who finished T4 at last year’s Valero Texas Open, will also be returning to the TPC San Antonio next week. • PADRAIG HARRINGTON UPDATE: Harrington, the multiple major championships winner, who won a few weeks ago in Florida, has withdrawn from the tournament. Harrington was extended a sponsor exemption earlier in the year because of his limited PGA TOUR status. However, after winning last month, he earned a two-year exemption on the TOUR and an invitation to play in the Masters Tournament. In an effort to get ready for Augusta, he needed a week off on his schedule. Upon withdrawing, Harrington did offer his early commitment to the 2016 VTO. • FEDEXCUP STANDINGS: Currently 17 of the top 30 players in the FedExCup standings are scheduled to compete in San Antonio. That list is led by San Antonio’s Jimmy Walker, who is No.1 in the standings. Here are the rest with players not previously announced in bold: Dustin Johnson (4), Jordan Spieth (7), Sang-Moon Bae (8), Charley Hoffman (11), Hideki Matsuyama (13), James Hahn (14), Shawn Stefani (18), Daniel Berger (19), Harris English (20), Brendon de Jonge (21), Nick Watney (22), Scott Piercy (23), Matt Kuchar (24), Russell Knox (25), Alex Cejka (28), Ryan Palmer (30). • REMINDER: PGA TOUR players have until 4:00 p.m. Central/5:00 p.m. Eastern time on Friday, March 20 to announce their intentions to play in the VTO. No player can commit after that deadline. A player can withdraw at any time. Aaron Eckstein was a two-time captain of the team; Garland Green finished his career ninth on the Tech’s All-Time Scoring list; and Marshall Bailey became only the second Hokie golfer to compete in four NCAA Championships. Head Coach Jay Hardwick’s task has been to continue to develop his returning players while integrating three promising freshmen into the team, all toward the ultimate goal of competing for the national championship. The season began just outside Chicago, Ill., with the Hokies making their first appearance in the Northern Intercollegiate at renowned Rich Harvest Farms, site of the 2009 Solheim Cup. The team finished fourth against a talented field, and junior Mikey Moyers tied for third individually. The Hokies then finished fifth at the VCU Shootout at Hermitage Country Club, much closer to home in Richmond, Va. Freshman Scott Vincent led the team, tying for 11th place on the same course that he had won the Valentine Invitational just a few weeks earlier.

  • Clutch Strokes: Performance Under Pressure in Golf
COLLEGE OF THE HOLY CROSS Clutch Strokes: Performance Under Pressure in Golf Jeffrey Paadre This paper examines 10 years worth of PGA Tour Tournament data in order to examine whether or not clutch performance exists during the final round of a tournament. After controlling scores for differences in course difficulty, the paper finds no evidence of tangible clutch performance. The authors find that the perception of clutch performance is more likely attributable to talent differential between golfers. Assuming a normal distribution of golfer talent, it is possible that Tiger Woods can outshoot his opponents on the final day of a tournament as well as lose his lead to his competitors. Motivation and Literature In professional sports, heroes can be created through the concept of clutch performance. The perception of clutch performance occurs when an athlete raises his or her performance to an extraordinary level during the most important moments of a sporting event. Athletes such as David Ortiz and Adam Vinatieri have been immortalized as legends due to their consistent ability to help their teams win baseball and football games during important games where the outcome was hanging in the balance. Conversely Bill Buckner and Scott Norwood are amongst the unfortunate athletes burdened with reputations as choke artists based on their inability to perform well when their teams needed a high performance the most. One of the challenges that accompanies examining performance under pressure lies within trying to define which performances constitute clutch performance. For example, in 2005 John Henry, the owner of the Boston Red Sox, presented David Ortiz with a plaque inscribed “David Ortiz: The Greatest Clutch Hitter in the History of the Boston Red Sox”.

  • 2015 TOUR Championship
TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola Player Capsules - Updated: 9/21/2015 12:03 PM Jason Day – No. 1 (2,000 points) Jason Day’s breakthrough season has included five victories, his first major title at the PGA Championship and a climb to No. 1 in the FedExCup standings and Official World Golf Ranking. The five-time winner joins just four others – Tom Watson (1980), Nick Price (1994), Vijay Singh (2004) and Tiger Woods (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2013) as the only players to have won five or more times in a season since 1980. The 27-year-old Australian won in February at the Farmers Insurance Open in a four-man playoff. He appeared to be heading into contention at the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, but vertigo symptoms from an inner-ear infection kept him from playing his best down the stretch. Day finished the event T9. His next tournament, The Open Championship at St. Andrews, his birdie putt at the final hole finished one rotation from going in and putting him in a playoff. He came back the next week, however, to win for the second time of the season at the RBC Canadian Open. After a T12 at the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational, Day’s breakthrough win at a major championship came with a dominant victory at the PGA Championship. Day’s victory at Whistling Straits followed six top-five finishes in major championships in the last four years. The win moved him to No. 2 in the FedExCup standings.
