SYNOPSIS (1/2-page) – Day of Wrath

“Day of Wrath” is a musical with a sweeping romantic score, about the human need for love and companionship. The plot: It’s Frankenstein. Shelley’s Frankenstein; No Hollywood’s . Not a parody, and yes, everyone dies at the end. Having lost his mother at a young age, Victor seeks to end man’s mortality and arrogantly enters territory beyond his control. Having unconditional love from his Elizabeth, he grants his creation none. While horror is present; as well as the theme of scientific responsibility, the tag line “Without love, what is life?” describes the overarching theme of the piece. So while derived from ’s work, I have made it my own.

Description Without love, what is life? Based on Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein, “Day of Wrath” is a musical with a sweeping romantic score, about the human need for love and companionship. Having lost his mother at a young age, Victor seeks to end man’s mortality and arrogantly enters territory beyond his control. Having unconditional love from his Elizabeth, he grants his creation none.

Full - Synopsis ACT I Scene 1: Parlor of the Frankenstein home In Victor's Coming Home, his father, best friend Henry and sweetheart Elizabeth, excitedly anticipate Victor's return, having completed his studies at the university. Offstage, Victor's younger brother William is asleep, as is Justine, his nanny in whom Henry has some interest. Victor arrives and in Through the Season's, Elizabeth expresses her hope that she and Victor will soon be married, while Victor anticipates setting up his own laboratory to continue his scientific work. Scene 2: Outside - A short time later Victor explains to Elizabeth his quest for the secrets of life, and believing he has found the answer, rushes off to his laboratory. (Once in a Dream). Scene 3: Victor's laboratory - minutes later Victor completes and tries to vitalize his creation, but is initially unsuccessful (Working). The sound of thunder in the distance gives him an idea. In God in Heaven, he calls on the Almighty to assist. Lightning strikes and as the Creature slowly comes to life (Heartbeat), his muscles spasm and Victor sees his creation become hideous looking. Victor flees his laboratory in horror, leaving the Creature alone. We learn later, that the Creature awakens and ventures out into the world alone. He is either shunned or attacked. By watching a family, he learns the language and how people live. He then returns to his birthplace to seek out his maker. He encounters William and while trying to silence his screams, accidentally kills him. Justine is convicted of William's murder and hanged. Scene 4: Musical transition Scene 5: Parlor of the Frankenstein home - A year and a half later Following the deaths of William and Justine, life has eventually returned to some degree of normalcy for everyone but Victor who knows that his creation might possibly be responsible for these tragedies. Nevertheless, Victor and Elizabeth have announced their wedding plans. His father enters with the guest list and in a reflective moment (More Than a Mother) Elizabeth recalls how, as an orphan, Victor's mother had brought her into their home, and died from an illness caught while tending her. Elizabeth has always felt responsible for Victor's loss. Father exits and Henry bounds in. He notices all the eligible girls on the list and makes fun of the various notables who are to be invited (Guest List). Elizabeth sings of her concern over Victor in When Will It End and then goes to call Victor. Victor enters looking depressed and in Life Must Go On, Henry tries to lift his spirits. They exit for dinner.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -v- rev. 6.8

Scene 6: Parlor of the Frankenstein home - That night Night falls. The Creature enters through the patio door. Victor returns from dinner and the Creature relates to him what transpired after being abandoned (Narrative). The duet Why Have You Created Me follows, and they are interrupted by Elizabeth at the door. The Creature hides, and in the Trio, Victor and Elizabeth sing a love duet, with the Creature contrasting their happiness with his loneliness. After Elizabeth leaves, the Creature enters and in Day of Wrath, entreats Victor to create him a mate.

ACT II Scene 1: Outside - A short time later. At night outside, Victor hides a sack he is carrying, as Elizabeth approaches. They sing of their love and approaching marriage (Here, In My Heart). Scene 2: Victor's Laboratory Victor is working on creating a female companion for the Creature who anticipates his bride awakening (I Can Dream Too). Victor weighs his responsibility to his creation versus that to mankind and fears the creation of a race of monsters. He stops work on the female and an altercation ensues. Henry hears noise from the lab and does not heed Victor's calls to stay out. Upon seeing the Creature, he draws his gun. The Creature throws him, and contacting some equipment, he is electrocuted. Victor then flings the unfinished bride from the table and orders the Creature to leave. As the Creature departs, he vows to return on Victor's wedding night. Victor, exhausted falls asleep beside Henry's body (and the instrumental number Nightmare depicts his dream). Scene 3: Bridal Suite at an Inn - A few months later The Innkeeper and his Wife are readying the room as they sing about marriage (Wedding Night). Elizabeth and Victor enter and sing a reprise of their duet, now as a Quartet along with the Innkeeper and his Wife. Elizabeth changes her clothes as Victor, remembering the Creature's threat, leaves to check the surroundings. The Creature enters through a window. Elizabeth is not afraid of him, as she sees her Victor inside of him. In the duet, Elizabeth Forgive Me the Creature, though realizing that she has not wronged him, is compelled to kill Elizabeth in order to wreak vengeance on Victor. The Creature leaves and Victor rushes in, throwing himself in despair over her lifeless body. Scene 4: Outside In the instrumental Pursuit and Return, Victor unsuccessfully pursues the Creature. Scene 5: Victor's laboratory - A short time later The only thing left is to destroy his creation and evidence of his experiment, even though Victor realizes (I Tried to Fly) that man's quest for knowledge and eternal life will one day lead another along the same path. The Creature enters and in the duet, Evil Fiend, the Creature mocks Victor's suffering. Victor shoots and wounds the Creature, who strangles him. The Creature first addresses his lifeless creator and then the Almighty in Creator's Creator. Not wanting anyone to continue Victor's work, he destroys the lab and himself.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -7- rev. 6.8

ACT I - SCENE 2

(A month later. ELIZABETH and VICTOR are outside in a wooded area, by a stream.)

ELIZABETH You've been up in that old decrepit building atop of the hill almost all the time. You're up and out before even William awakes. VICTOR I’ve finally assembled my own laboratory. ELIZABETH Are you not scared of it anymore? We were afraid to go there when we were children. VICTOR Actually . . . you . . . were afraid. I played there with Henry sometimes. ELIZABETH So that’s where you disappeared to! You've been home nearly a month now. I hardly see you! VICTOR I'm at Father's table every night for supper . . . ELIZABETH And then out again in the evening. What are you setting up there? Can I see it? VICTOR When it is complete. You will be very impressed! ELIZABETH What are you trying to accomplish?

[Musical Cue: Introduction to Song #3] VICTOR I’ve told you . . . Make it so children will never be sick, and people need never die. ELIZABETH Isn't that going into God's territory? VICTOR Are we not made in his image? ELIZABETH Victor, you can’t bring your mother back; even though every day I wish . . . (VICTOR puts his finger on her lips)

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -8- rev. 6.8

VICTOR Elizabeth, I'm not the only one who has lost someone.

[Track #3: Once in a Dream] VICTOR GENERATIONS HAVE GONE BY; YET THE REASON WHY WE MUST DIE, HAS ELUDED THE WISE MEN THROUGHOUT TIME. HOW DOES LIFE START? AND WHY MUST IT END? HOW CAN WE KINDLE LIFE ONCE AGAIN? ONCE IN A DREAM, I FOUND THAT TRUTH. I WAS WORSHIPPED BY MANKIND, FOR WHAT ONLY I KNEW. (pointing to the stream) DAYS AND YEARS LIKE STREAMS FLOW. YET FOR ALL HIS EFFORT MAN STILL DOES NOT KNOW. WHERE DO WE COME FROM? AND WHERE DO WE GO? (VICTOR is distracted. Seeing the stream, he has an idea.) ELIZABETH Victor? (VICTOR excitedly pulls out his notebook from his coat pocket and writes something in it.) VICTOR THIS IS NOT A DREAM! YES, I NOW KNOW THE TRUTH. I HAVE HERE THE ANSWERS. (holds notebook up triumphantly) SOON I'LL HAVE THE PROOF! (VICTOR kisses her quickly and then goes off; but not before taking her hand. Their outstretched arms, perhaps like in Michelangelo's "The Creation of Man".) (VICTOR is now alone on stage.)

HISTORY WILL SOON BE MADE. NATURE'S SECRETS UNFOLD THIS DAY. I CAN NOW MAKE A PERFECT, LIVING, BREATHING, THINKING MAN. I SHALL CREATE LIFE WITH MY OWN HANDS!

(end scene)

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -9- rev. 6.8

ACT I - SCENE 3

(Setting: Victor's Laboratory, moments later.) (Victor's laboratory is set up in an old building on their land, over the hill. A lightning rod is on its roof. The room is dimly lit. A large "high voltage" electrical panel is against the back wall with dials, gauges, switches and knobs, as well as lights. Electrical cables are also present. A ladder is on the floor. A fireplace is present over which might hang a reproduction of da Vinci's Vitruvian Man. On the side near the door is a small table/desk and stool. In the center is a long table with the CREATURE lying under a sheet. His head is covered with an electrical helmet and turned away from the audience. A cart with other surgical equipment and a writing quill is near the foot of the table. A coat rack with a lab apron, is also present.)

(VICTOR enters wearing his cloak. He removes his notebook from an inner pocket of his cloak. He hangs his coat on the rack. He looks at the CREATURE on the table and adjusts something.)

[Track #4: Creation Scene]

(VICTOR puts on his lab apron, connects cables from the panel to the table and powers up the electrical panel with lights. There is also a quill on the cart. He might do stitching on the creature, and use a syringe. He takes his notebook from the desk and brings it to the table where he makes notations as he works.)

VICTOR PARTS OBTAINED FROM DISSECTING ROOMS AND SLAUGHTER HOUSES. FIRST I BUILT THE FRAME. THEN ATTACHED SOFT TISSUE, CAUTERIZED WITH FLAME. I WILL MAKE THE PERFECT MAN, THEN EXTEND OUR OWN LIFE SPAN. MAKE ILLNESS A THING OF THE PAST, AND MAKE OUR OWN BODIES LAST.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -10- rev. 6.8

ELECTRICITY FROM CHEMICAL CELLS, STORED UP IN VOLTA'S WELLS. WILL FLOW LIKE RAPIDS OF A STREAM. STARTING LIFE WITH A FOCUSED ELECTRICAL BEAM.

(At the musical sforzandos, he pulls the lever causing light flashes and a slight jerk from the CREATURE, but nothing more. He makes an adjustment and pulls the lever again, with the same result.) (He brings the notebook to the desk, writes something and puts his head down in contemplative thought and slight frustration. There is a roll of thunder and flash of lightning in the distance. VICTOR excitedly writes something in his notebook.)

[A roll of thunder is heard in the distance.]

[ God in Heaven ]

(VICTOR takes the notebook, puts on his cloak and puts the notebook in its pocket. He takes an electrical cable and climbs up the ladder.)

VICTOR GOD IN HEAVEN, LORD OF POWER, I NEED YOU TO STRIKE THIS HOUR. I HEAR YOUR STRENGTH; NOW HEAR ME CALLING. BREATHE YOUR FIRE, LIFE INSTALLING.

THIS MAN MADE IN YOUR OWN IMAGE, CAN BEGIN, BUT CANNOT FINISH. ONE DAY MAN WILL HAVE YOUR POWER, NOT THIS MOMENT, NOT THIS HOUR. (VICTOR begins to ascend the ladder holding a cable, and connects it to a weather vane. Then he descends and flips some switches.)

NO! GOD IN HEAVEN, MY CREATOR, HUMANKIND AND EARTH’S CURATOR, WE PRAY, WE WEEP, WE VENERATE, YET YOU LET LIFE DEGENERATE.

IF MAN WERE MADE IN MY IMAGE, I WOULD NOT LET LIFE DIMINISH. NOW I SEIZE YOUR TYRANT POWER, LIGHTING LIFE IN THIS DARK HOUR.

[choral vocals begin here] GOD OF LIGHT, LORD OF MIGHT,

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -11- rev. 6.8

I NOW CREATE LIFE! [music: Storm]

(Lightning strikes as the storm rages and lighting abounds.)

[ Heartbeat ]

(As the storm subsides a heartbeat is heard in the bass. VICTOR hangs up his cloak and walks over to the table.) (Victor’s cloak with the notebook in the pocket must be left behind in the laboratory.)

VICTOR I STAND, I SHAKE. MY BODY QUAKES. MY CHILD NOW AT REST. HEART BEATS. IT'S SOON HE'LL MOVE FOR ME. MY WORK HAS WROUGHT SUCCESS. I’VE MADE A MAN, DEFIED GOD’S PLAN, I’LL NEXT DEFY DEATH’S PURGE. HE MOVES, HE SHAKES. HIS BODY QUAKES. LIFE AND BEAUTY EMERGE.

(CREATURE moves his hands first, then his arms and then his body starts to make motions; but in contorted ways.)

HEART BEATS. IT'S NOW HE LIVES FOR ME. HIS MIND WILL TAKE ON THOUGHT.

HE BREATHES, HE WAKES. (VICTOR uncovers the Creature's face, but facing the rear so only VICTOR seems him.)

WHAT HELL! HIS FACE, HOW HIS FEATURES CONTORT. (CREATURE writhes horribly.) (VICTOR, horrified, begins to shake in fear.) WHAT FEAR IS THIS, THAT GRIPS LIKE DEATH, AS I WATCH THIS BODY WRITHE?

HOW CAN SUCH BEAUTY WHEN AT REST, BE SO HIDEOUS WHEN ALIVE? HIDEOUS WHEN ALIVE!

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -12- rev. 6.8

(CREATURE desperately tries to stand.) WHAT HAVE I DONE? IT'S ALIVE!

(VICTOR flees or backs out of the laboratory, horrified. The CREATURE tries to walk towards VICTOR, holding out his arms like a child taking his first steps, but unable to control his movements, he stumbles and falls.) (Victor’s cloak with the notebook in the pocket must be left behind.)

CREATURE AAAAAH!

(blackout)

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -13- rev. 6.8

ACT I - SCENE 4

[Musical passage (C-minor)]

(Could portray in silhouette a procession: someone carrying a dead child; a woman led off to hang, followed by people in mourning. Similar look to opening.) (As the music modulates into major, the darkness lifts and the brightly lit spring day appears.)

ACT I - SCENE 5

(Setting: The parlor of the Frankenstein home) (Early Spring, a year and a half later.) (A sofa is in the middle of the room. French doors in the rear. A portrait of a woman hangs over the fireplace. There is a small desk with a chair at the corner of the stage, with a mirror, a small picture, a quill and paper.) (Lights up on a bright day.)

(VICTOR enters. He is carrying a notebook; a newer one than in the previous scene.) (Victor is talking to himself. Maybe to the audience.)

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -14- rev. 6.8

VICTOR A year and a half since that day. A year and half, to the day!

I did create life! Oh god, it was hideous! I ran. I left it. But when I returned it was gone. Did it leave on its own? It couldn't have gotten far; I searched far and wide, for days and weeks. Nothing. No body, no carcass. Perhaps devoured by wild animals. But what if it survived? Killed my brother; and I am to blame?! Justine could not have been the murderer. . .

Poor William; I tried, but I could not revive him. I couldn't even save my brother!

Why did I leave?! Why did I leave?! I ask myself this every day! I was afraid, so focused on its horrendous appearance.

I couldn't find my old notes. My notebook lost in the confusion, but I remember most things.

I started too big. My work . . . returns to small creatures. Starting again small, then, we'll see. . .

I did make a man; It was alive for at least a minute; If I could do it; I could do it again. But this creature; is it out there? No one’s seen it. Is it gone forever? To be forgotten about? Or will it come back? Will HE come back? (No.) (Shakes his head, as though brushing away that unlikely possibility; notices the guest list on the table. Changes to more positive demeanor.)

Ah . . . the guest list. How much happier should one man be. Elizabeth, the light of my life, will become my wife.

(VICTOR exits.)

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -15- rev. 6.8

[ Musical passage (Phrygian)]

(ELIZABETH enters the room, walks to French doors, opens curtain, breathes deeply, smiles, then seats herself at small table.) [The dialog in this scene should not be allowed to drag.]

FATHER Elizabeth... I’ve finished the preliminary guest list. ELIZABETH (picking it up and glancing it over) Wonderful. FATHER In spite of Victor's nearly constant distress, I’m happy to see that he has finally come to his senses long enough for you to select a date for your wedding. ELIZABETH It would have been hard to plan a wedding under the circumstances of a year ago. FATHER Yes, but there is grief and there is paralysis. Death is a part of life. ELIZABETH Victor doesn’t want to accept that. FATHER I know. Did I stop living when I lost my wife? I still had Victor and William ...... to be a father too. Now, only Victor. (pause) You know that I have always thought of you as a daughter. And I couldn’t be happier about your engagement. ELIZABETH Nor could I. I love your son so much. FATHER Ever since you came to stay with us, you and Victor got along so well together. He always adored you. ELIZABETH And I him; But now it’s so much more than that. I love your son in ways . . . I shouldn’t speak of . . . (blushing) FATHER As it should be.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -16- rev. 6.8

ELIZABETH I came here as an orphan, with nothing; no parents; no family, not even a friend. And you all gave me so much. FATHER Mostly my dear wife. It was her caring way that brought you here. That caring that I can see in you; That Victor sees in you. (looking at his wife’s portrait) Caroline . . .

[Track #5: More Than a Mother] ELIZABETH I remember well those years with her. But those last days . . .

SHE WAS MORE THAN A MOTHER TO ME. THOUGH SHE DID NOT BRING ME INTO THIS WORLD, SHE BROUGHT ME INTO YOUR HOME, AND INTO YOUR HEARTS. SHE GAVE ME LIFE. IN DREAMS I CAN STILL SEE HER, THOUGH NOT SO CLEARLY, THROUGH THE THICK SHROUD OF FEVER THAT COVERED ME, STANDING ABOVE MY BEDSIDE, HELPING MY FEVER SUBSIDE KEEPING ME SAFE AND WARM, THROUGH THE FEAR THAT I MIGHT NOT LIVE UNTIL DAWN. BUT IT HURTS THAT SHE DIED, AS SHE HELPED ME REVIVE; AND I SURVIVED; YES I SURVIVED; AND I HAVE THRIVED. SHE WAS UNAFRAID TO GIVE HER LIFE FOR ME. SHE WAS MORE THAN A MOTHER TO ME. WHEN MY LIFE WAS ALL BUT GONE, SHE RETURNED MY LIFE TO ME. SHE GAVE HER LIFE FOR ME. AS ONLY A MOTHER WOULD. AS ONLY A MOTHER COULD.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -17- rev. 6.8

ELIZABETH I can't help thinking that it was because of me . . . FATHER You mustn't think that. ELIZABETH Well, I will always be there for Victor. (looking at the guest list) Ah, I see you’ve included the Beaumonts. FATHER I’d like to introduce their daughter Nicole, to Henry. I hear she's quite lovely. ELIZABETH That would be wonderful! It’s time Henry started to meet some eligible young ladies. ((putting list down on the desk, she sees and picks up small picture of Justine.)) He was so distraught after dear Justine's death. He really did care for her. If Justine still were here, our dear footloose Henry might already have settled.

[Track #6: Poor Justine ] FATHER POOR JUSTINE; DEAR JUSTINE. SHE WAS TRUELY INNOCENT AND ONLY SEVENTEEN. CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE; NOTHING EVEN SEEN. DEATH BY ROPE, EVEN THOUGH WE TRIED TO INTERVENE. ELIZABETH It’s horrid to think that some believed that she could have murdered William. FATHER Although no one who actually knew her . . . We all seem to have sort of recovered from the shock of the double tragedy, But life will never be as before. But life goes on. ELIZABETH For everyone, but Victor. Sometimes I feel as if I just can’t reach him; He keeps to himself so much. Perhaps I can persuade him to go out this afternoon. The weather couldn't be finer. FATHER If anyone can persuade Victor, it's you. (Kisses ELIZABETH on cheek.)

[Underscoring: Father exits]

(FATHER exits. ELIZABETH begins to daydream. There is a hint of concern for VICTOR on her face.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -18- rev. 6.8

The lights dim, with spot on ELIZABETH who moves to front center and the musical introduction to a solo is heard, but . . . HENRY enters from patio - bounds in, carrying freshly picked flowers; as the lights come up.) [If not staged that way, the intro music must be cut.]

HENRY Flowers for you, Mademoiselle! ELIZABETH Picked from MY garden no doubt? HENRY Nothing but the best for you, Elizabeth. (Big grin) Where is your intended?

(ELIZABETH puts down paper, gets vase and begins arranging flowers.)

ELIZABETH He's either in his study or that locked away in his lab. HENRY On such a glorious day?! (Henry grabs the guest list.) What have we here? (Elizabeth tries to recover it.) Oh, here's my name, Followed by every eligible girl in the province. Marie and Claire, Suzanne, Elaine. Are they your bridesmaids? (Elizabeth nods yes.) Will I have my pick? (Elizabeth hits him.) Now look down here. They’d be offended if they knew they were on the bottom of the list.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -19- rev. 6.8

[Track #7: Guest List ]

(ELIZABETH lightheartedly tries to retrieve list.)

HENRY THEY ARE THE ELECT. SHOW THEM A LITTLE MORE RESPECT.

COUNT BLANC, THE PAINTER, IS A MEMBER OF THE IDLE ARISTOCRACY. HE THINKS HIS ARTWORK IS A GIFT TO THE WORLD, BUT I SEE ONLY MEDIOCRITY. HE'S INVITED TO CELEBRATE, WE WOULD APPRECIATE, YOUR ATTENDANCE AT OUR WEDDING. YOUNG BARON APRICOPOLI SEEMS TO BELIEVE HIS BARONESS IS THE VERY, VERY BEST. THAT IS TRUE IF YOU ARE MEASURING THE SIZE OF HER TWO LARGE . . . EARRINGS. FROM THE CLANG THEY MAKE WHEN SHE MOVES, YOU'D THINK THAT SHE'D BE HARD OF HEARING. IF SHE ATTENDS YOU WON'T HAVE TO RING THE BELLS AT YOUR WEDDING. DUKE TOM, DUKE JOHN, PRINCE WILL, PRINCE PHIL; HOW MUCH NOBILITY DO YOU KNOW? BARON ROTHSCHILD; HE MIGHT BE BUSY SINGING IN HIS OWN SHOW. THEY'RE INVITED TO CELEBRATE, WE WOULD APPRECIATE, YOUR ATTENDANCE AT OUR WEDDING. I SEE MESSIEUR BEAUMONT AND HIS WIFE AND THEIR DAUGHTER NICOLE HAVE BEEN INVITED. QUITE AN ATTRACTIVE GIRL, VERY FRIENDLY, JUST A LITTLE BIT NEAR-SIGHTED. RUMOR HAS IT, HER PARENTS WOULD LIKE A HUSBAND SOON TO BE FOUND. THAT'S NOT SURPRISING; FOR HOW ELSE CAN THEY STOP HER FROM SLEEPING AROUND!

MADAME BLAU, MADAME BLY, MADAM BLAY, FRAU KLOPENSTOCKEN; THEY ARE ALL LISTED HERE. THEY'LL BE COMPETING OVER THE COST OF THE GOWNS THEY WILL WEAR, AND THE HEIGHT OF THEIR HAIR. HENRY So, Victor still has his nose in his books. I was hoping he would join me for a ride today. ELIZABETH That would be wonderful Henry, although I don't think he will. He's been so reclusive. HENRY When Victor lost his mother, he was like this for years. Changed him profoundly. ELIZABETH How could it not? HENRY Not just his emotions. He wanted to know everything about life . . . and death. He went from just enjoying nature, to studying it. ELIZABETH And trying to change it. (sighs)

[Track #8: When Will It End] HENRY It's good to see you've finally settled on a wedding date, though. That’s a sure sign of his recovery. A midsummer wedding will be quite lovely. I’m sure Victor's spirits will lift long before then.

(ELIZABETH prepares to sing the song from which she was previously "interrupted".)

ELIZABETH (to HENRY) WHEN WILL IT END? HELP HIM MY FRIEND. WHY DO YOU THINK HE STILL CLEAVES TO HIS PAIN, AS HE GRIEVES?

HELP MY DEAR VICTOR. MAKE HIM FEEL STRONG. LEND HIM YOUR HAND TO GUIDE HIM ALONG. SO HE CAN SMILE AGAIN. SO HE CAN LAUGH AGAIN. FEEL AGAIN, LIVE AGAIN. (addressed to VICTOR, not present)

OH MY DEAR LOVE, PLEASE RISE ABOVE.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -21- rev. 6.8

YOU WHO KNOW HOW BIRDS FLY, KNOW THAT I CARE, THAT I’LL HELP YOU GET BY.

YOU'VE BEEN SO FULL OF LIFE YOU'VE FILLED ME WITH JOY. WHAT IS YOUR INNER STRIFE? HOW CAN YOUR SPIRITS BE BUOYED? WE MUST GO ON LIVING. I BEG YOU TO TRY. WHY CAN YOU NOT FLY? HENRY DON'T CRY ELIZABETH. VICTOR WILL CLIMB UP FROM DESPAIR, JUST GIVE HIM SOME TIME. ELIZABETH (addressed heavenward) YOU, WHO GAVE HIM WISDOM, PLEASE GIVE HIM STRENGTH. LET YOUR COMPASSION SHINE DOWN AND TAKE AWAY HIS GRIEVING PAIN.

LORD GOD IN HEAVEN, SHOW ME YOU ARE THERE. LET VICTOR KNOW THAT I WILL ALWAYS CARE. PLEASE MAKE HIM FEEL STRONG, TO GUIDE HIM ALONG, SO HE CAN SMILE AGAIN, LAUGH AGAIN, FEEL AGAIN, LIVE AGAIN! HENRY I’ll see what I can do. ELIZABETH In any event, you must join us for dinner. I'll tell Victor you're here.

[Track #9: underscoring and Victor sings ]

(ELIZABETH exits, HENRY jumps into a reclining position on the sofa. VICTOR enters looking depressed. HENRY rises to speak to him.)

HENRY There you are! Why not come with me for a ride in the country after dinner?

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -22- rev. 6.8

It promises to be a beautiful evening. VICTOR Not tonight. I have work to do. HENRY Are you alright? Give me your trust. Tell me what's wrong. It seems to me that you've been working much too hard and neglecting other more important things. The secrets of the universe can certainly wait until tomorrow. At present, what could possibly be more important than your health? Elizabeth seems rather concerned for you.

VICTOR ELIZABETH, MY WIFE-TO-BE, AND WHAT’S MORE, SHE'S BEEN A FRIEND TO ME. MINE TO LOVE, CHERISH AND PROTECT. THANK GOD I HAVE SOMEONE TO SHARE MY LIFE. I'LL NEVER BE ALONE.

[Track #10: Life Must Go On ] VICTOR But, how can I dare feel such comfort when tragedy strikes all those around me. I should have saved them; My poor sweet brother William, and Justine, your Justine. HENRY I too grieved for William . . . and Justine, more than you know. But neither of us could have done anything. Could we? VICTOR No. HENRY EVERYTHING’S NOT ALWAYS IN OUR CONTROL. SOMETIMES IT FEELS LIKE TIME CAME AND STOLE SOMEONE WHO CANNOT BE REPLACED. WE HAVE NO CONTROL OVER OUR FATE. TRAGEDY STRIKES ALL MEN SOME DAY, WE ARE HELPLESS TO KEEP IT AWAY. BUT ALL PEOPLE MUST GO ON LIVING, SHARING AND GIVING, WHILE STILL REMEMBERING. LIFE MUST GO ON, DEAR VICTOR, LIFE MUST GO ON. YOU HAVE SO MUCH MORE TO GIVE. LIFE MUST GO ON, MY FRIEND, LIFE MUST GO ON. LIFE MUST GO ON. DON'T GIVE UP HOPE WHILE YOU STILL YET LIVE.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -23- rev. 6.8

GLOOM HAS DISAPPEARED. BRIGHTER DAYS ARE HERE. DAYS NOT DARK WITH WOE, BUT WITH LIFE THEY STILL CAN GLOW. (opens curtain?) LET YOUR SPIRITS RISE, AND THINK AHEAD, OF FUTURE JOYS, NOT OF SORROW. FORGET YOUR FEARS, AND DRY YOUR TEARS. THINK OF TOMORROW.

YOU STILL HAVE MUCH TO BE THANKFUL FOR. YOU STILL HAVE LOVE, THE ONE YOU ADORE. YOU STILL HAVE YOUR STRENGTH AND YOUR HEALTH, AND EVEN YOUR WEALTH, SO DON'T CLOSE THE DOOR. WE CAN'T BRING BACK THOSE WHO HAVE DIED, (Victor's expression reacts.) EVEN THOUGH FOR YEARS MEN TRIED. ALL WE CAN DO IS GET ON WITH OUR LIVES. THE LIVING STILL NEED YOU, NOT LEAST, YOUR CHOSEN BRIDE. VICTOR ELIZABETH! HENRY LIFE MUST GO ON, DEAR VICTOR, DON'T LET THE DARK DAYS PAST STILL CLOUD YOUR HEAD. LIFE MUST GO ON, MY FRIEND, LIFE MUST GO ON, LIFE MUST GO ON. WE ARE STILL LIVING, WE ARE NOT THE DEAD. DON'T LET THE GHOSTS AND DEMONS GET IN(TO) YOUR HEAD. DON'T LOOK BACK. DON'T LOOK BACK. JUST LOOK AHEAD! ELIZABETH (Calls from off stage) Victor, Henry...Dinner!

(VICTOR closes the window curtain. Both exit for dinner. The sun sets and night falls.)

[underscoring: Nightfall]

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -24- rev. 6.8

ACT I - SCENE 6

[underscoring: Nightfall]

(Sun sets. Stage empty. Time elapses...Night. CREATURE enters through open patio door. He is barefoot and dressed in tattered clothes, including the now tattered cloak, which VICTOR wore in the first three scenes. He looks around room, at bookshelf in particular. He takes a book, the Bible, off the mantle, looks at it and caresses it.)

(Hearing someone approach, CREATURE moves into the shadows, holding the book.)

(VICTOR enters. CREATURE steps out, and possibly gets on his knees to his creator covering his face with his hands symbolically.)

CREATURE My Creator, how long I have waited to see thee!

(VICTOR steps backwards slowly and locks door.)

VICTOR You . . . speak?! CREATURE I have come to ask you . . . VICTOR (shaking, realizing what must have occurred) Creature of hell . . . Be gone . . . CREATURE (rising) You have a duty as my Creator. The Bible says . . . VICTOR (interrupting) You are as vile as . . . Cain!

(CREATURE stands up, visibly angered, walks slowly toward VICTOR, backing him onto the stool by the desk.)

CREATURE (shaking the Bible)

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -25- rev. 6.8

Liken me to Cain if you will, but even he bore the mark of his Creator's protection! VICTOR How do you know . . . ? CREATURE Hear me, lord, and you will know my story. (CREATURE puts down Bible.)

((The Creature's narrative may be accompanied by interpretive dance, choreography, or the Creature stepping out of the scene into the scenes he is depicting.))

[Track 11: Narrative ] CREATURE WHEN I AWOKE, ALONE WAS I.

I STEPPED OUT INTO THE LIGHT, UNACCUSTOMED TO THE BRIGHTNESS, BUT THE AIR WAS CRISP, THE PINES AND FLOWERS LOVELY TO SEE. THE BIRDS SANG HIGH AND LOUD. I STOOD TALL AND PROUD. I THOUGHT THE WORLD WAS ALL THERE FOR ME. VICTOR I didn't imagine that you even survived. CREATURE FROM A DISTANCE I WATCHED SOME SHEPHERDS, LEADING FLOCKS DOWN TO A POND. "THEY ARE LIKE ME", THOUGHT I, AND WANDERED PAST THE CLIFFS THAT LAY BEYOND. THEIR HANDS SEEMED FORMED LIKE MINE, THEIR STATURE, STRAIGHT AND TALL. THEN ATTEMPTING TO JOIN THEM, I SLID DOWN THE ROCKY WALL. BUT, AS I APPROACHED THEY FLED. THEIR SCREAMS STILL PIERCE MY SOUL! THE DREAM HAD RECURRED, A DREAM I HAD WHEN MY LIFE WAS NEW. BUT, THAT WAS NOT A DREAM, WAS IT? YOU ABANDONED ME TOO! VICTOR I did . . . I was terrified too . . . When I returned to my laboratory the next morning, you were already gone. CREATURE WHEN THE BREEZE THAT WAS BLOWING CALMED, I SAW THE IMAGE OF TREES IN THE POND. AND WALKED OVER TO THE WATER'S EDGE. LOOKING DOWN, SAW MY OWN IMAGE. WHAT A HIDEOUS THING WAS I.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -26- rev. 6.8

(CREATURE looks in a mirror hand mirror then throws it down; OR acts as though he is looking down into a pond.) VICTOR I TRIED TO MAKE YOU BEAUTIFUL. I TRIED TO MAKE YOU PERFECT. BETTER THAN MYSELF. CREATURE I KNEW THEN WHY THEY RAN IN HORROR. WHO COULD NOT HAVE BEEN AFRAID OF SUCH A DREADFUL MONSTER. FOR DEATH, I NEARLY PRAYED. VICTOR What have I done?! CREATURE LATE THAT NIGHT I SOUGHT SHELTER HERE, AND REPLACED THE SHEETS WITH CLOTHES TO WEAR, AND THIS CLOAK I FOUND. WRAPPED IT 'ROUND, TO MASK FROM THE WORLD MY IMAGE.

VICTOR If I had only waited in the lab . . . CREATURE PEOPLE EVERYWHERE REACTED WITH ALARM, TURNED AWAY, OR TRIED TO DO ME HARM. I KNEW I MUST TRAVEL ON TO FIND ANOTHER CREATURE OF MY KIND. VICTOR I looked for you for days, in the surrounding area. I eventually assumed you did not survive. I found no trace of you. To where did you travel?

((If Narrative Parts 2&3 is choreographed to depict the scene described; the actors playing Father, Henry & Elizabeth, could portray the blind man, young man and woman respectively.))

[Narrative - Part 2] CREATURE IN A CLEARING OF THE FOREST, CAME I UPON A SMALL HOUSE. DARED NOT APPROACH DURING DAYLIGHT, LEST BE SEEN AND CHASED AWAY. BUT, IN THE EVENING I SLIPPED CLOSE BY, INTO A NEARBY HOVEL. SAW THROUGH THE WINDOW A YOUNG MAN, A GIRL AND A BLIND MAN WITH HAIR OF GRAY.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -27- rev. 6.8

I WANTED TO KNOW OF THE LIVES OF MEN, AND THEIR PLIGHT, SO, I WATCHED THEM FROM UNDER THE CLOAK OF NIGHT, SHIELDED BY THE FOREST DURING DAYLIGHT. THROUGH THE WINDOW, I COULD SEE THEM SMILING, LAUGHING, SOMETIMES CRYING, TOGETHER IN THEIR HOME. FROM THE OUTSIDE I WAS LOOKING INWARD, ALWAYS ON THE OUTSIDE, AND ALWAYS ON MY OWN. YOU MADE ME A BODY MORE DURABLE THAN YOUR OWN, THUS, I COULD LAST THROUGH THE LONG WINTER'S COLD ALONE. DREAMING OF BEING INSIDE WITH THEM, ENDURING THE HARSH WEATHER. I CRIED WHEN THE OLD MAN PLAYED SWEET MUSIC ON GUITAR; LAUGHED WHEN THE LAD TRIED TO DANCE DRESSED UP AS THE CZAR. HID AS THEY LEFT FOR TOWN TOGETHER. EVERY EVENING, THE GIRL WOULD READ TO THE BLIND MAN. AT THE WINDOW I WOULD LISTEN, ABSORBING EVERY WORD. I SOON BEGAN TO UNDERSTAND THE SOUNDS UTTERED ‘ROUND THEIR TABLE, AND TALES FROM A BOOK CALLED "THE BIBLE", WHICH SPEAKS OF THE GOD WHO CREATED THE WORLD. (picks up Bible) IT SOON BECAME CLEAR HOW THIS "GOD" HAD CREATED MAN; APART, YET TOGETHER, TO TALK AND WALK HAND IN HAND. GOD CREATED ADAM AND EVE TOGETHER. LET THIS GOD BE MY GOD TOO, I BEGAN TO PRAY; THEN MAYBE SOMEDAY I CAN HOPE TO FIND MY MATE, I WON'T HAVE TO BE ALONE FOREVER. (VICTOR looks at him sympathetically.) (CREATURE puts down Bible) WHEN I COULD NOT BE DISCOVERED I'D REACH INSIDE THE WINDOW, AND GENTLY LIFT THE VOLUME FROM WHICH THEY HAD READ THE MOMENT PRIOR. I LEARNED ABOUT MANKIND, HIS HISTORY, HIS FIRE; HIS DREAMS AND ASPIRATIONS; YET TO WHAT COULD I ASPIRE? I THEN READ THE WORDS IN THE BOOK I FOUND IN MY COAT. (pulls notebook from pocket) ARE THEY YOUR WORDS VICTOR? YES THEY’RE THE WORDS YOU WROTE! (CREATURE shoves the notebook into Victor's hands. VICTOR is visibly shaken.) "EXPERIMENTAL DIARY OF VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN"!

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -28- rev. 6.8

OUTLINING THE TALE OF MY HORRID CREATION; I DON'T SHARE A GOD, OR A RACE, OR A NATION. MAN'S CREATOR GUIDES HIM, MINE FLED FROM ME IN DISGUST!

(VICTOR is speechless.)

[Narrative - Part 3] CREATURE WHEN YOU CHOSE TO GIVE ME LIFE, YOU GAVE ME STRENGTH AND FOR THAT I THANK YOU. FOR I COULD NOT HAVE SURVIVED WITHOUT THE STRENGTH OF SEVERAL MEN.

YOU’VE ALSO GIVEN ME CAPACITY TO LOVE UNEQUALLED. SO YOU SEE, WHY I GRIEVE, THAT YOU DID NOT GIVE ME AN APPEARANCE THAT WOULD NOT BE SCORNED BY MEN OF YOUR KIND. VICTOR It was not my intention . . . CREATURE EVEN SO I'VE FORGIVEN YOU. YOU WERE BLIND. I CAN'T ACCEPT THAT YOU WOULD NOT GIVE ME LOVE. STILL I CAN'T ACCEPT THAT NO ONE WOULD GIVE ME LOVE. SAVE THE BLIND MAN, NOW, I KNOW THAT HE DOES SEE, IN HIS HEART LIES HIS VISION. WHEN I REALIZED MY THOUGHTS NOW COULD ALL BE SPOKEN, SO I COULD APPROACH HIM, MY SPRITS COULD ASCEND. COULD CONVERSE WITH ANOTHER BEING, AND HAVE A FRIEND. BUT HOW COULD I SPEAK WITH HIM? THEN SADDNESS WAS ALLAYED, WHEN NOTICING THE TWO WERE GONE A FEW HOURS EVERY DAY. WHEN ALONE, I REALIZED I NOW HAD A CHANCE TO REACH HIM. TO BESEECH HIM. TO TEACH HIM WHO I AM. HE WAS KIND, OF LIKE MIND, YET I STILL DON'T KNOW IF HE REALLY SENSED JUST HOW DEEP MY GRATITUDE LAY, EVEN THOUGH I TRIED TO LET HIM KNOW THAT DAY. WE COULD HAVE BEEN TRUE FRIENDS, UNAFFECTED BY MAN'S INSTINCTIVE FEARS. TWO FRIENDS, WHOSE BOND COULD HAVE LASTED FOR MANY YEARS.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -29- rev. 6.8

HE FED ME. I LENT HIM MY VISION; HE GAVE ME PROVISION. TILL HIS CHILDREN SAW ME, WHEN THEY CAME WITHOUT WARNING. I COULD SEE THEIR HORROR. THE MAIDEN FAINTED. THE YOUNG MAN BEAT ME. I COULD HAVE TORN HIM LIMB FROM LIMB, BUT REFRAINED. CURSED, CREATOR, WHY DID I LIVE! CURSED, CREATOR, WHY DID I LIVE!

VICTOR For mercy's sake! Then what . . . CREATURE (interrupting VICTOR) After setting out yet again without goal or purpose, I set my mind upon finding you again, my Creator.

In these woods surrounding your village, I became confused. I needed someone to assist me in finding your place of residence. I finally came upon a young boy. VICTOR William! CREATURE I thought his bias might not yet be formed, but still I approached him carefully.

But, the child reacted like the rest. Paled and screaming with fright, he called for his nanny. "Justine, Justine...," he cried. I cupped my hand over his face to silence him, for fear of being discovered, and soon he ceased to struggle. When all was still, I lifted my hand from the child's face to speak to him, but his small limp body slipped down beside me onto the ground. VICTOR No! (shaking) CREATURE You cannot know the pain I felt upon seeing William's body lifeless beside me, or the subsequent torment I felt upon discovering he was your beloved brother.

I had not known death before, only unfortunate life. Death is colder and more lonely than my own miserable existence.

I watched the events that later transpired unobserved. The girl was arrested and brought to trial. But I knew there could be no witness against her. “Justice, Justice shalt thou pursue”, the Bible says. Certainly she would be acquitted.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -30- rev. 6.8

But she was hanged! Mankind showed no justice or compassion even for one so fair to look upon as Justine. What could I expect of them?! But YOU are my creator.

I know you cannot forgive me, even as I tell of these events. Yet, even so, I am your responsibility. You, who created me for your own gratification, then left me to face the miserable torment of your race alone!

[Track #12: Why Have You Created Me?] CREATURE I WAS YOUR DREAM. I AM YOUR PROOF. WHO AM I? WHAT AM I? I'M ASKING YOU! WHY? TELL ME WHY? WHY HAVE YOU CREATED ME? WHY? TELL ME WHY? WHY HAVE YOU CREATED ME? CREATURE YOU COMMANDED CLAPS OF THUNDER, LIGHTNING THAT IGNITED ME, FROM THE DEPTHS OF ETERNAL SLUMBER. WON’T YOU DO WHAT’S RIGHT, FOR ME? VICTOR A FLAWED GENESIS. THINGS HAVE GONE AMISS. CREATURE I WILL COMPELL. I KNOW WHERE YOU DWELL. I SHALL NOT LIVE LIKE THIS? VICTOR MUST I LIVE LIKE THIS, A FATHER TO A CHILD OF HELL? CREATURE WHY? OH, WHY? PLEASE TELL ME, WHY? (grabs Victor's arm) VICTOR PLEASE LET GO! CREATURE TELL ME WHY HAVE YOU CREATED ME? VICTOR PLEASE GO AWAY.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -31- rev. 6.8

I CAN'T ALLOW YOU TO STAY HERE. CREATURE WHY? TELL ME, WHY? TELL, ME WHY HAVE YOU CREATED ME? VICTOR OH NO! PLEASE GO. RUN WHERE YOU CAN, FAR OFF FROM MAN, DON'T STAY HERE! OH WHY, TELL ME WHY DEAR GOD, PLEASE TELL ME WHY IS THAT I CAN FEEL FOR HIM THIS WAY? WHY? CREATURE WHY? TELL ME, WHY? I WILL NOT RUN. I WILL NOT HIDE UNTIL YOU LISTEN TO MY PLIGHT. NO! I WILL NOT GO. I WILL NOT RUN; NOT RETURN TO FLIGHT. VICTOR I DON'T KNOW WHAT I CAN DO TO HELP HIM. IT IS ME THAT MUST BE MAD. I COULD NEVER BETRAY HIM. PLEASE JUST GO WHERE YOU WILL. CREATURE JUST LISTEN TO ME. VICTOR I WILL NOT HELP YOU KILL. CREATURE NOW LISTEN TO ME! A SIMPLE TASK IT IS ALL THAT I ASK OF YOU. VICTOR COULD IT BE ONLY ONE SMALL TASK HE ASKS OF ME. THEN HE'LL GO FAR FROM HERE, LEAVING ME FREE FROM FEAR. CREATURE WHY? TELL ME WHY? TELL ME WHY DO YOU ABANDON ME? WHY? TELL ME, WHY? VICTOR WHY DID YOU NOT DIE? PLEASE GO AWAY. GO FAR AWAY. WHY ARE YOU FORSAKING ME? (looking heavenward) CREATURE TELL ME WHY ARE YOU FORSAKING ME? WHY? WHY?

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -32- rev. 6.8

VICTOR WHY? HARD AS I TRY. TELL ME WHY HE MAKES ME FEEL THIS WAY? CREATURE DON’T DENY ME. DO WHAT IS BEST FOR ME; HEED MY REQUEST TO THEE. WILL YOU COMPLY? VICTOR CAN I PERFORM YOUR TASK? ANSWER QUESTIONS YOU ASK ME? CREATURE HEAR ME NOW! LISTEN WELL! HERE'S YOUR SUCCESS STANDING HERE, DON'T YOU SEE DON'T YOU CARE. I WAS BORN BY YOUR HAND IN THE IMAGE OF MAN, OF MAN. VICTOR MY WORK IS HERE, AND I'M SHAKING WITH FEAR. HE WAS BORN BY MY HAND, IN THE FRIGHTENING IMAGE OF MAN. CREATURE I SEE YOU UNDERSTAND. OUR FATE LIES IN YOUR HANDS. VICTOR PLEASE GIVE ME STRENGTH ...... NOW TO RESIST. CREATURE IT IS YOUR CHOICE, NOW WHAT DO YOU CHOOSE? WE BOTH WIN OR BOTH LOSE IT ALL. WILL YOU HEAR WHAT I REQUEST OF YOU NOW? VICTOR DEMON! I MUST TELL YOU TO GO NOW! CREATURE WHY? TELL ME, WHY? TELL ME, WHY DO YOU NOT ANSWER ME? VICTOR LEAVE NOW! GO NOW! FLEE NOW! CREATURE WHY? TELL ME WHY? TELL ME, WHY DO YOU ABANDON ME? I'VE COME HERE TO ASK,

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -33- rev. 6.8

VICTOR JUST LEAVE ME ALONE! CREATURE ONLY ONE SIMPLE TASK. VICTOR GET OUT OF MY HOME! GO! GO! GO! GO! CREATURE I CANNOT, I WILL NOT LEAVE THIS PLACE ALONE. VICTOR YOU MUST GO! CREATURE I WILL NOT GO!

[Knock on Door]

VICTOR Who's there? ELIZABETH It's Elizabeth. You hardly touched your supper. I've brought you something to eat.

(CREATURE looks at VICTOR for awaiting some reaction.)

VICTOR (to CREATURE) Hide yourself. You must not let her see you.

[Elizabeth and Victor]

(CREATURE exits to patio, VICTOR opens door.) (ELIZABETH enters, with a tray of cheese and fruit.)

VICTOR (“preprise” of Elizabeth Forgive Me”) (Trying to be cute and hiding his tension.) ELIZABETH, FORGIVE ME, FOR NOT EATING THE ROAST; BUT ALL I COULD HANDLE TONIGHT WAS TOAST. ELIZABETH, THE SAUCE ON TOP LOOKED TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, BUT I WAS NOT HUNGRY EVEN THOUGH IT WAS COOKED BY YOU. ELIZABETH HERE, EAT THIS AND TRY TO GET SOME SLEEP. VICTOR Thank you darling.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -34- rev. 6.8

ELIZABETH Victor, Please tell me what's wrong? VICTOR I’ve been working on an experiment that's gone out of control, and I must right it before I can rest. (ELIZABETH reacts with concern.)

(CREATURE seen on patio by audience, not ELIZABETH.) (ELIZABETH embraces VICTOR. ELIZABETH walks toward the patio door and closes the curtains.)

[Track #13: Trio] ELIZABETH YOU NEED TO FIRST RELAX, THEN FINISH YOUR ENDEAVOR. SO THE STRESS ON YOU WILL SEVER, DO WHATEVER YOU HAVE TO DO. BUT KNOW THAT WHEN WE ARE TOGETHER. HAPPINESS IS ALL I KNOW. STAY BY MY SIDE FOREVER. NEVER LET ME GO. VICTOR MY FIANCEE, MY LOVE, WHEN I AM STANDING HERE BESIDE YOU, ANY FEARS, I RISE ABOVE, WHEN I SEE YOUR BRIGHT EYES GLOW. I FEEL JOY WHEN WE'RE TOGETHER. HAPPINESS IS ALL I KNOW. I'LL BE BY YOUR SIDE FOREVER. AND I'LL NEVER LET YOU GO. CREATURE (singing from the outside) SUCH HAPPINESS BETWEEN, A MAN AND HIS BRIDE TO BE. I'M HATED WHENEVER SEEN. THERE'S NO HAPPINESS FOR ME. NOT A WOMAN IN THE WORLD COULD BEAR TO LOOK UPON MY FACE. I'M ALONE. I'M ALL ALONE. I'M THE ONLY OF MY RACE. VICTOR & ELIZABETH MY SWEETEST DEAREST LOVE . . . CREATURE VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN, UNTIL YOU MAKE ME A BRIDE . . .

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -35- rev. 6.8

ALL . . . I WILL NEVER LET YOU GO.

ELIZABETH Now, get some rest. VICTOR Goodnight.

(ELIZABETH exits. VICTOR locks door.)

[musical cue]

(CREATURE re-enters)

VICTOR Tell me what you want from me and be gone! CREATURE You are to be married?! VICTOR Yes. What do you want?! [music starts] CREATURE Make me a mate in my image, and we will leave this realm of man. This is all I ask. VICTOR Never! CREATURE Even Cain, who was banished from mankind, was given a mate. VICTOR Get out! (CREATURE forcibly plants VICTOR on the stool.) [Track #14: Day Of Wrath] CREATURE DAY OF WRATH, WHEN I WAS BEGOTTEN. A HORRID CREATURE BEST FORGOTTEN, BROUGHT INTO THIS WORLD FOR NO GOOD REASON, WITH NO ONE TO LOVE ME, AND NO ONE TO LOVE. A FLAWED CREATION, IN A FLAWED MAN'S IMAGE CREATION STARTED, BUT NOT YET FINISHED. A BUCK HAS A DOE, AND A MAN HAS A WOMAN. I STAND ALONE.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -36- rev. 6.8

I HAVE LOOKED NEAR. I HAVE LOOKED FAR. I'VE TRAVELED TO THE CORNERS OF THE EARTH. I'VE FOUND NO ONE, TO BE MY MATE. I HAVE FOUND NONE TO SHARE MY FATE. AND SO THE DAYS THAT PASS ME BY, JUST MAKE IT SOONER 'TIL I DIE, FOR WITHOUT LOVE, I HAVE NO REASON TO LIVE. IT'S NOT TOO LATE! MAKE ME A MATE, AS I REPENT, I’LL HONOR AND FORGIVE. VICTOR No! Never! CREATURE MY DAYS ARE BLACK; MY NIGHTS ARE DARKER. NO FRIENDS, NO LOVER, NO MOTHER, NO FATHER. NO ONE NOT AFRAID TO LOOK IN MY EYES. NO ONE WHO CARES IF I LAUGH OR I CRY. GOD MADE ADAM AND EVE TOGETHER. TWO BY TWO, LIFE BRAVED THE WEATHER. UNLIKE ANY CREATURE UNDER THE SKY, I STAND ALONE. AND SO I DREAM, THAT ONE DAY I WILL FIND SOMEONE, WHO CAN LOOK AT ME. THUS DO I HOPE; THUS DO I PRAY. BUT WITHOUT YOU, IT CANNOT BE. (VICTOR picks up notebook.) SO ALL I ASK OF YOU IS THIS; THAT YOU MAKE HER AS YOU DID I, AND TOGETHER, FAR AWAY FROM MAN WE'LL FLY. IT'S THIS I ASK, BRING HER TO ME! I BEG OF THEE! (CREATURE towering over VICTOR; or falls on his knees at Victor's feet; VICTOR possibly placing his hand on the Creature's shoulder;)

(Lights down)

Intermission

ACT II

ACT II - SCENE 1

(A few days later. Outside in the late evening.)

(VICTOR is wearing a different cloak. He walks across stage with a sack, cautious of being seen. ELIZABETH appears on the other side of the stage, outside for some fresh air. She hears someone/thing and calls nervously. . .)

ELIZABETH Hello? Anyone there?

(VICTOR throws his sack behind some bushes.)

VICTOR It's me, Elizabeth.

(ELIZABETH breathes a sigh of relief.)

I wanted some fresh air.

(VICTOR takes her hand.)

[Track #15: Here, In My Heart ] VICTOR IN THE GLOW OF THE MOONBEAMS, WITH CEASELESS WONDER, YOU CAPTIVATE MY MIND. FULFILLING ALL MY DREAMS; (I) DIDN’T NEED VENTURE FAR TO FIND.

ELIZABETH YOU’VE ALWAYS BEEN THE ONE, TO WHOM MY DREAMS, I EASILY CONFIDED. AND I FOUND, OUR HOPES, OUR LONGINGS COINCIDED.

ONCE LONG AGO, WHEN DUE OF ME, YOU LOST YOUR MOTHER. (VICTOR shakes his head) I PROMISED MYSELF, THAT I WOULD CARE FOR YOU LIKE NO OTHER. BUT THAT WAS LONG, LONG AGO, AND NOW MY NEEDS AND WANTS I DISCOVERED. THEY’RE FOR YOU TO BE MY HUSBAND, FRIEND AND LOVER.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -38- rev. 6.8

BOTH THOUGHTS OF YOU BRIGHTEN UP MY NIGHTS, BREAKING THE MIDNIGHT GLOOM WITH LIGHT. AND DREAMING OF THE DAY WE’LL WED, KEEPS ANY DEMONS FROM MY HEAD.

FOR MY PASSION IT IGNITES. BUOYING MY FEELINGS TO NEW HEIGHTS. YOUR MIND/EYES CAST BRILLIANCE LIKE THE SUN, AND I AM SURE THAT YOU’RE THE ONE. . . VICTOR / ELIZABETH FOR THERE IS SOMEONE TO SHARE MY LIFE. FOR EVERYONE. KEEP SECURE. EVERYONE, TO GIVE MY LOVE. MUST KNOW LOVE. OF YOURS I’M SURE.

I KNOW LIFE. I KNOW LOVE I KNOW LOVE. FOR LOVE YOU’VE SHOWN. ELIZABETH, VICTOR ONLY YOU. MY LOVE. MY SOUL HAS KNOWN. ELIZABETH THAT DAY WILL SOON COME. VICTOR A FAMILY WE’LL START. BOTH EVEN THROUGH THE NIGHTS WE WON’T BE APART. ELIZABETH / VICTOR IT IS SO RIGHT. I FEEL IT. IT IS SO GOOD. BELIEVE IT. AND NOT SOON ENOUGH, WE’LL SHARE. BOTH TILL THEN, YOU’LL BE HERE. (V: RIGHT HERE) TILL THE NIGHTS AS THE DAYS WE’LL SHARE. BUT TONIGHT YOU’LL BE HERE IN MY HEART.

(Blackout)

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -39- rev. 6.8

ACT II - SCENE 2

(Setting: Victor's laboratory, a few moments later.)

(When the lights come up, the CREATURE is standing over the table looking at his soon-to-be bride. VICTOR opens the door and the CREATURE helps him with the sack. It is placed behind the table, as we will not see its contents. VICTOR takes off his coat and puts on his apron and begins working; consulting his notebook. The CREATURE assists and watches in anticipation.)

[Track 16: I Can Dream Too] VICTOR And if I do this, then will you let me alone, forever, and let Elizabeth and I go on with our lives? CREATURE This I promise. VICTOR You know, I can't make her perfect. All I can do is make her, as I made you. Do you understand what I mean? CREATURE Yes. She'll look as beautiful as I. I ask for nothing more. VICTOR First I built the frame, Then soft tissue cauterized with a flame. . . CREATURE ALONE AGAIN, NEVER! WITH YOU FOREVER. WE'LL BE TOGETHER JUST ME AND YOU. I'LL BE ALONE, NEVER! WITH YOU FOREVER. WE'LL BE TOGETHER. YOU SEE I CAN DREAM TOO. SOON SHE'LL BE HERE NEAR ME. SOON SHE'LL SMILE AT ME, AND THEN SOON SHE'LL HOLD ME TIGHT, AND TOUCH ME RIGHT, AND LOVE ME.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -40- rev. 6.8

(VICTOR powers up electrical panel.)

ALONE, NEVER! WITH YOU, FOREVER. WE'LL LIVE TOGETHER. DON'T SAY I CAN'T DREAM TOO. SOON HER HEART WILL BEAT, AND SOON OUR EYES WILL MEET, AND THEN SOON SHE'LL HOLD ME TIGHT, AND TOUCH ME RIGHT, AND LOVE ME.

(VICTOR consults his notebook as he works on “bride”.)

ALONE AGAIN, NEVER! WITH YOU FOREVER. WE'LL BE TOGETHER. WHO SAYS I CAN'T DREAM TOO. VICTOR WHAT IS THIS THAT I AM DOING? IS IT A BAD DREAM, OR AM I MAD? IS IT LIFE THAT I'M CREATING, OR TO THE DEATH TOLL SHALL I ADD?

LAST TIME I FELT GREAT EXCITEMENT. I WAS SURE THAT IT WAS RIGHT THEN. NOW I'M FILLED WITH ENDLESS FRIGHT. WHAT IF I CREATE A RACE OF DEMONS, KILLERS, DESTROYERS, BRINGING DEATH? I COULD NOT LIVE WITH THAT ON MY HEAD.

WITH SUCH ANTICIPATION, WITH SUCH LONGING, HE LOOKS TO ME. FROM HIS WORLD OF LONELINESS, I ALONE CAN SET HIM FREE. I CAN'T JUST RUN AWAY. FOR HE IS MY RESPONSIBILITY, BUT TO WHOM DO I OWE LOYALTY? TO THE CREATURE THAT I MADE, OR TO MY OWN RACE? SO LOVE HE MAY FIND, OR TO PROTECT ALL MANKIND? I MUST CONTINUE WORKING, BEFORE I CHANGE MY MIND. CREATURE SOON HER HEART WILL BEAT, AND SOON OUR EYES WILL MEET, THEN SOON SHE'LL TOUCH ME RIGHT, AND HOLD ME TIGHT, AND LOVE ME.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -41- rev. 6.8

VICTOR I SHOULD NOT. CAN I NOT? I MUST NOT. FOREVER. A HIDEOUS RACE, FOREVER. CREATURE ALONE AGAIN, NEVER! WITH YOU FOREVER. WE'LL BE TOGETHER. JUST ME AND YOU. ALONE AGAIN, NEVER! WITH YOU FOREVER. WE'LL BE TOGETHER. DON'T SAY I CAN'T DREAM TOO. VICTOR I CANNOT DO THIS, NO MATTER WHAT HE THREATENS. I WILL NOT DO THIS. DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO! VICTOR NO! I WILL NOT GO ON! (VICTOR slams his hand down on the table.) CREATURE PLEASE. YOU MUST. YOU MUST, I BEG YOU! FINISH HER, I BEG YOU! PLEASE! VICTOR (VICTOR covers his ears.) I WILL NOT HEAR YOUR PLEADING. I WILL NOT HEED YOUR PLEADING. CREATURE I WILL NO LONGER PLEAD. I WILL NOW DEMAND. YOU ARE MY CREATOR, BUT I HAVE BECOME YOUR MASTER. OBEY ME! OBEY ME! (Corners VICTOR and pushes him to the ground.)

(KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK) (HENRY is at the door.)

HENRY VICTOR! ARE YOU ALRIGHT? VICTOR! VICTOR STAY AWAY! STAY OUT! -- WHAT A DREADFUL NIGHT!

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -42- rev. 6.8

CREATURE -- OR HE'LL HAVE A FIGHT! HENRY -- SOMETHING ISN'T RIGHT!

(KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK)

HENRY WHAT IS HAPPENING? LET ME IN! VICTOR! VICTOR STAY AWAY! STAY OUT! -- PLEASE, HENRY! -- EVERYTHING IS FINE, INSIDE, I'M SURE.

CREATURE -- KEEP HIM OUT, -- OR HORRORS HE WILL FIND BEYOND THAT DOOR!

HENRY -- NO! -- WHAT IS GOING ON BEHIND THAT DOOR?

(HENRY bursts through the door and sees VICTOR in the Creature's clutches.)

HENRY WHAT THE DEVIL IS THIS? THE DEMON WHO HAS TERRORIZED US ALL!? (HENRY pulls out a pistol.)

VICTOR NO! HENRY, NO!

(VICTOR runs in front of the CREATURE to stop HENRY. The CREATURE throws VICTOR aside and moves slowly toward HENRY who is pointing a pistol at him. The CREATURE grabs Henry's arm and the gun goes off pointing upwards as the CREATURE pushes HENRY back. He falls against the high voltage equipment and is electrocuted; the equipment being destroyed in the process. HENRY is dead.)

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -43- rev. 6.8

(VICTOR kneels over Henry's body and tries to revive him. He tries to connect the electricity, but the equipment is destroyed. VICTOR then rises and throws the half-built bride onto the floor.)

CREATURE NO! NO!

(The CREATURE screams in anguish and throws himself onto the bride's body. VICTOR rises.)

VICTOR GET OUT, FOUL CREATURE! GET OUT! BEGONE! YOU'RE NOT WANTED. YOU'LL FIND NO HELP HERE.

(CREATURE rises to leave.)

CREATURE I WILL LEAVE YOU NOW, BUT YOU CAN BE SURE THAT I WILL RETURN. I WILL BE WITH YOU ON YOUR WEDDING NIGHT!

(CREATURE exits) (VICTOR tries again to revive him, but realizing it is in vain, kneels over Henry's lifeless body, and eventually falls asleep out of grief and exhaustion.)

[optional: Instrumental: Nightmare]

(During this instrumental number depicting Victor's nightmare, a veiled, backlit interpretive dance may occur which depicts, along with other things, an ominous wedding scene. The church bell's ringing morphs into a heartbeat.)

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -44- rev. 6.8

ACT II - SCENE 3

(Setting: The bridal suite at an inn. A few months later, on VICTOR and ELIZABETH's wedding night. A sofa is in the center. A small table, chair and fireplace are there. It can be the same set as the Frankenstein parlor. A large wardrobe is in the room; Big enough to hold a person.) (“INNKEEPER’S WIFE” is played by same actor as HENRY. If the part is portrayed as a male, only one word needs to change; “she” becomes “he”.**)

[Track #17: Wedding Night]

(During this number, the INNKEEPER and his WIFE are readying the room. She opens a large window and closes the curtain in front of it. They are dusting, sweeping and have sheets, blankets, towels and pillows. They do not open the wardrobe, although come near it, but are always distracted.)

WIFE PUT SOME CUSHIONS ON THAT SOFA OVER THERE. OPEN THE WINDOW TO FRESHEN THE AIR. IT IS THEIR WEDDING NIGHT. EVERYTHING MUST BE RIGHT. IT MUST BE PERFECT BEFORE THEY'RE HERE. WIFE Go get the door. I'll finish up.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -46- rev. 6.8

[Musical Cue: reprise tag ] (WIFE finished straightening things up. INNKEEPER leaves, then returns with luggage, leading in ELIZABETH and VICTOR.)

WIFE Congratulations to you. INNKEEPER If there is anything you need, our room is just down the hall. Here is your key, sir. (INNKEEPER hands VICTOR the key.) And, congratulations. ELIZABETH Thank you. The room is lovely.

(VICTOR hands the INNKEEPER a tip.)

INNKEEPER Thank you. I can also chill up some champagne, if you like. VICTOR Why don't you do that. I'll come for it later.

[Track #18: Quartet ] (Each couple sings as a pair; VICTOR and ELIZABETH near the fireplace, and the INNKEEPER & WIFE across stage near the door.)

ELIZABETH THE TIME HAS ARRIVED, WE ARE UNITED OFFICIALLY TOGETHER. WE WILL SHARE, OUR HOPES, OUR JOYS, OUR HOME, OUR BED. INNKEEPER AND WIFE PUT THE CHAMPAGNE ON ICE WITH THE BEER. MAKE SURE THE GUESTS HAVE NOT A CARE. IT'S ALMOST TIME TO SLEEP. THE REWARD OF THE DAY WE'LL REAP. VICTOR THIS, OUR WEDDING NIGHT, BEING WITH YOU HERE IS ALL THAT MATTERS. IN MY CARE, YOUR LIFE, YOUR GENTLE DREAM, YOUR FRAGILE BREATH.

(INNKEEPER and WIFE exit.)

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -50- rev. 6.8

(INNKEEPER and WIFE exit.)

ELIZABETH The ceremony was perfect. And tonight will be perfect. VICTOR It will, Elizabeth. It will! ELIZABETH Why all the secrecy about where we were going tonight? And the route we took? VICTOR I want to be alone with you. So none of your friends would try to join us here. Remember Greta and Harold's wedding, when a whole lot of their friends decided to have a picnic breakfast on the lawn outside their room at an inn. ELIZABETH Wise idea, Victor. Although the most likely one to have done that was Henry. (pause) That dreadful accident. Now I know why you didn’t want me in your laboratory. VICTOR I'm glad we didn't postpone the wedding. Yes, Father so much wanted to see this day, and now that he is ill. . . ELIZABETH At least he could be present.

No more talk of illness, or death. Only joyful talk tonight. No talk of experiments or laboratories. Just the future. Our future, a happy future. VICTOR Yes Elizabeth. Only the future.

(ELIZABETH unpacks and takes out a nightgown.)

ELIZABETH I’ll change out of these travel clothes. I’ll just be a moment.

(ELIZABETH walks offstage through a doorway and is presumably in the lavatory freshening up.)

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -51- rev. 6.8

VICTOR "I will be with you on your wedding night", he said. "I will be with you on your wedding night." God have mercy. I took all sorts of precautions. But still, I must check the surroundings and the gates of the inn, and be sure we are safe. And yet, even if he is dead, he is still with me on my wedding night! (VICTOR unwraps a pistol and puts it in his coat.)

(Calling offstage) Elizabeth, I will get the champagne. ELIZABETH (From offstage) That would be wonderful.

(VICTOR looks pensive.) (VICTOR exits. ELIZABETH enters freshly clothed in a peignoir. During this section she walks towards the wardrobe, but never quite opens it.)

[Track #19: Elizabeth Forgive Me ] ELIZABETH WHY IS HE SO AFRAID? IT'S NOT HARD TO SEE, I KNOW MY SWEETHEART, NOW, HUSBAND WELL, HIS EYES BETRAY CONCERN TO ME. FATHER IN HEAVEN SHOW THAT YOU CARE, TAKE AWAY ALL OF MY DEAR VICTOR'S FEAR. HIS WORK NO LONGER BRINGS HIM JOY, AS IT ONCE DID, AS IT DID BEFORE.

NOW HE IS OBSESSED WITH DESTROYING HIS HANDIWORK, THE NATURE OF WHICH IS THE ONLY THING HE HAS NOT YET SHARED WITH ME.

I SEEM TO BE THE ONLY THING WHICH STILL BRINGS HIM JOY. WHAT A HEAVY RESPONSIBILITY. WHAT IF, LIKE HIS MOTHER, I SHOULD PERISH YOUNG? WHAT WOULD HE DO? HE WAS ONCE SO STRONG INSIDE. NOW HE DEPENDS ON ME. HOW WOULD HE LIVE WITHOUT ME?

(CREATURE enters through window.)

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -52- rev. 6.8

CREATURE LIKE ME! ELIZABETH (gasping) WHAT IN GOD'S CREATION . . . CREATURE I AM NOT OF GOD'S CREATION! I AM THE WORK OF MAN.

(ELIZABETH stares at him, circles around him, looks into his eyes, almost lovingly with realization.)

WHY DO YOU LOOK AT ME THAT WAY? ARE YOU NOT AFRAID OF ME!? ELIZABETH YOU ARE VICTOR'S CREATION! WHY DO YOU TORMENT HIM? HE BROUGHT YOU INTO THIS WORLD. CREATURE HE ABANDONED ME! ELIZABETH HIS OWN CHILD. VICTOR WOULD NEVER . . . (ELIZABETH moves toward the door, then turns back.) MY GOD! YOU HAVE NOT HARMED HIM?!

(CREATURE steps between ELIZABETH and the hallway door.)

CREATURE NO. VICTOR WOULD NOT SUFFER BY HIS OWN DEATH.

(They are on opposite sides of the room with the sofa between them, and will slowly circle around it.)

CREATURE ELIZABETH, FORGIVE ME, AND PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT I HAVE NO CHOICE, IN WHAT I MUST DO.

ELIZABETH, FORGIVE ME, FOR YOU HAVE NOT HURT ME BUT TO PAY BACK VICTOR, I MUST USE YOU.

(She moves close to him.) ELIZABETH MY VICTOR HAS SHAPED YOU. YES, HE IS INSIDE YOU.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -53- rev. 6.8

AND I'M NOT AFRAID FOR I SEE HIM IN YOUR EYES. CREATURE WHY DON'T YOU RUN? WHY DON'T YOU SCREAM? WHY AREN'T YOU FRIGHTENED WHEN YOU LOOK AT ME? ELIZABETH MY VICTOR'S CREATION JUST CANNOT BE BAD. AND WITHOUT QUESTION, I PUT MY LIFE IN HIS HANDS. CREATURE ELIZABETH, FORGIVE ME, AND PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT I HAVE NO PLEASURE, IN WHAT I MUST DO. ELIZABETH MY VICTOR HAS SHAPED YOU. YES, HE IS INSIDE YOU. AND I'M NOT AFRAID NOW, FOR I SEE HIM IN YOUR EYES.

MY VICTOR HAS SHAPED YOU. HIS SOUL LIES INSIDE YOU. AND I'M NOT AFRAID NOW, FOR I SEE HIM IN YOUR EYES. I SEE HIM IN YOUR EYES. FOR HE IS IN YOUR HEART. AND HE SHARES YOUR SOUL. CREATURE ELIZABETH FORGIVE ME, FOR YOU HAVE NOT HURT ME. BUT TO DESTROY VICTOR I MUST KILL YOU! (ELIZABETH reacts)

ELIZABETH, FORGIVE ME AND PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT I HAVE NO CHOICE, IN WHAT I MUST DO. ELIZABETH (now backing away as he comes toward her) NO! PLEASE! NO! GO BACK! NO! VICTOR! HELP ME! HELP ME! NO! WAIT! GO BACK! VICTOR HELP! AAAH!

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -54- rev. 6.8

CREATURE ELIZABETH FORGIVE ME, AND PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT I HAVE NO CHOICE, I MUST KILL YOU.

(The CREATURE strangles ELIZABETH, then gently and tenderly lowers her to the sofa and closes her eyes; Then opens the hall door and yells triumphantly:)

I HAVE RETURNED!

(CREATURE exits, escaping through the outside door. VICTOR rushes in.)

VICTOR ELIZABETH! ELIZABETH!

(VICTOR kneels beside her lifeless body.)

ELIZABETH, FORGIVE ME.

(VICTOR falls over her body. The CREATURE may be seen through the veiled doorway, his gruesome grin illuminated by flashes of light.)

(lights down)

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -55- rev. 6.8

ACT II - SCENE 4

[optional: instrumental: Pursuit and Return ]

(VICTOR carrying his pistol, pursues the CREATURE across Europe and the frozen artic wasteland. Unable to keep up with him, Victor ends up back in his laboratory.)

ACT II - SCENE 5

(Setting: Victor's laboratory. The table is now empty. VICTOR is sitting on the stool at the desk, holding his notebook and looking very dejected. A pistol, mirror, and writing quill are on the desk.)

[Track #20: I Tried to Fly] VICTOR MY WORK HAS BROUGHT THE SHADOW OF DEATH DOWN UPON ME. I TRIED TO CREATE LIFE, BUT DEATH IS ALL I SEE. I TRIED TO DO GREAT THINGS, AND PROTECT THOSE I LOVE. BUT I DESTROYED THOSE I CARED FOR, AND THOSE WHO CARED FOR ME.

I KNOW DISEASE PLAYED ITS PART, BUT MY FATHER DIED OF A BROKEN HEART. WILLIAM, JUSTINE, HENRY, ELIZABETH!

I TRIED TO MAKE A MAN IN MY OWN IMAGE. (taking mirror) IN THAT I FAILED. (looking at himself) IF THIS WAS MY MODEL? (pointing to himself) THEN SO HAS HE! (pointing to heaven) MY CREATION BROUGHT OUT THE DARK SIDE IN ALL MANKIND, AND WE DID THE SAME TO HIM. IF I HAD ONLY KNOWN. IF I HAD ONLY KNOWN. (rises, holding notebook)

BUT TO LIVE THAT ONE MOMENT, WHEN I MADE LIFE BEGIN. WOULD I NOT HAVE DONE IT ALL OVER AGAIN? I COULD NOT HAVE DONE IT ALL OVER AGAIN. NOW I HAVE NOTHING LEFT TO LIVE FOR,

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -56- rev. 6.8

BUT TO DESTROY MY OWN CREATION. EVEN KNOWING MY STORY, SOMEONE ELSE WILL FOLLOW. SO I MUST DESTROY ALL EVIDENCE BEFORE I CAN DIE IN PEACE.

(VICTOR rips the pages of the notebook, and throws it all into the fireplace.)

VICTOR I TRIED TO RUN BEFORE I COULD WALK. I TRIED TO SING BEFORE I COULD TALK. I TRIED TO FLY NOT KNOWING HOW TO LAND. I THOUGHT I KNEW ALL THAT COULD BE KNOWN. I TRIED TO BRING LIFE TO DEAD BONES. I TRIED TO FLY SO HIGH, ABOVE ANGELS ON HIGH. AS IF TO COMPARE MYSELF TO GOD ALMIGHTY. BUT I'M JUST A MAN, ONLY A FLAWED, FLAWED MAN. MAN TRIES TO WALK BEFORE HE CAN STAND. MAN TRIES TO RUN BEFORE HE CAN WALK. MAN TRIES TO FLY, NOT KNOWING HOW TO LAND. SO, EVEN IF MY STORY WERE KNOWN. MAN WILL AGAIN TRY TO LIVEN DEAD BONE. SINCE HE ATE FROM THE TREE AND WAS BANISHED FROM EDEN, THE QUEST FOR ETERNAL LIFE IS PART OF HIS BEING. I KNOW IT WILL HAPPEN. ONLY YOU KNOW WHEN. ONE DAY MAN WILL MAKE LIGHTNING AT WILL. AND COULD USE IT TO HEAL OR KILL. THE CHOICE TO CREATE OR DESTROY ALL THE WORLD. POSSESSING THE POWER OF LIGHTNING AND MORE, MAN WILL AGAIN KNOCK AT YOUR DOOR. AND WHEN COMES THE DAY, HE TRIES THIS AGAIN. OH GOD, PLEASE STAY HIS HAND. OH LORD GOD. PLEASE STAY HIS HAND. OH LORD GOD, WHEN MAN CLAIMS THE POWER ONLY YOU ONCE HAD. WHEN HE ATTEMPTS THIS AGAIN. OH LORD GOD, PLEASE STAY HIS HAND. OH LORD GOD, PLEASE STAY HIS HAND.

AND IF YOU CAN'T STOP HIM, THEN GUIDE HIS HAND.

(CREATURE enters.)

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -57- rev. 6.8

[Track #21: Evil Fiend ] VICTOR EVIL FIEND! YOU'VE RETURNED HERE? ARE YOU NOT AFRAID OF MY WRATH? THAT I WILL WREAK VENGEANCE ON YOUR CURSED HEAD. CREATURE YOUR PAIN AND SUFFERING MAKE ME LAUGH. VICTOR YOU'VE DESTROYED THE INNOCENT AND THE HELPLESS. CREATURE I TOO WAS ONCE INNOCENT AS A CHILD, AS A CHILD. EVEN THEN, MAN SOUGHT TO DESTROY ME. VICTOR (heavenward?) WHY? TELL ME WHY? WHY DO YOU TORMENT ME? CREATURE EVEN NOW YOU STILL HAVE NOT SUFFERED THE AGONY AND PAIN YOU HAVE CAUSED ME. COULD HAVE GIVEN ME LOVE, YET YOU GAVE ME HATE. COULD HAVE MADE ME A BRIDE, NOW IT'S TOO LATE! VICTOR I’VE HUNTED YOU ACROSS THE TUNDRA. WHY WOULD YOU RETURN?! WHY WON’T YOU DIE?! DIE! WHY DID YOU NOT DIE?! CREATURE WHY? OH, WHY? IF YOU HAD ONLY DONE MY WILL, WHY? OH WHY? I WOULD NOT HAVE FORCED MYSELF TO KILL. VICTOR EVIL FIEND! ARE YOU NOT AFRAID, OF THE VENGEANCE THAT I WILL WREAK ON YOUR CURSED HEAD? CREATURE I FEAR NOT EVEN MY OWN DEATH, IN FACT I WELCOME IT. BUT BEFORE I DIE, I STILL WANT TO SEE YOU WRITHE. VICTOR YOU'VE TAKEN MY LOVE, HAD YOUR REVENGE. I’VE NOTHING TO DO, EXCEPT YOUR LIFE TO END. SO YOU CAN NEVER HURT ANOTHER MAN OR WOMAN.

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -58- rev. 6.8

CREATURE "DID I REQUEST THEE, MAKER, FROM MY CLAY TO MOLD ME MAN?" 1 DID I ASK THAT YOU DESERT ME? MY SUFFERING WAS CAUSED BY YOUR HAND. VICTOR MISERABLE DEMON; A CREATURE FROM HELL IS WHAT YOU ARE. I WILL DESTROY YOU. I'LL HAVE MY REVENGE. BETWEEN YOU AND DEATH IS NOT SO FAR. CREATURE I STOPPED SEEKING LOVE AND LIVED FOR REVENGE. I HAVE NOTHING LEFT, EXCEPT YOUR LIFE TO END. VICTOR YOU'VE TAKEN EVERYTHING CLOSE TO ME. CREATURE NO ONE EVER WOULD COME CLOSE TO ME. VICTOR/CREATURE YOU'VE TAKEN MY LOVE. / I STOPPED SEEKING LOVE. VICTOR AND CREATURE I NOW LIVE FOR REVENGE. I'VE NOTHING TO DO, EXCEPT YOUR LIFE TO END. I WOULD THEN WELCOME MY OWN DEATH. VICTOR DEMON!

(CREATURE approaches VICTOR who is backing up towards the desk.)

CREATURE FEEL MY PAIN. VICTOR SATAN! CREATURE FEEL MY ANGER! VICTOR FROM GOD'S GRACES LONG AGO YOU FELL. DEMON! CREATURE SUFFER LIKE ME! VICTOR MONSTER!

1 from "Paradise Lost" by John Milton

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -59- rev. 6.8

CREATURE ANGUISH LIKE ME! VICTOR I WILL SEND YOU STRAIGHT BACK TO HELL! CREATURE I FEAR NOT MY DEATH. VICTOR THEN PREPARE TO DIE. (VICTOR picks up pistol.) CREATURE I'VE HAD MY REVENGE. VICTOR SO NOW SHALL I. (VICTOR points the pistol at the CREATURE.) VICTOR AND CREATURE RETURN TO THE DUST AND GO STRAIGHT BACK TO HELL!

(VICTOR shoots at the CREATURE and wounds him, but the CREATURE strangles VICTOR. The CREATURE then kneels over his creator.)

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -60- rev. 6.8

[Track #22: Creator's Creator 1] CREATURE OH, FRANKENSTEIN! GENEROUS AND SELF-DEVOTED BEING! WHAT DOES IT AVAIL THAT I NOW ASK THEE TO PARDON ME? I, WHO IRRETRIEVABLY DESTROYED THEE, BY DESTROYING ALL THOU LOVEST. (CREATURE rises.) ALAS! HE IS COLD, HE CANNOT ANSWER ME. (to audience) FEAR NOT THAT I SHALL BE THE INSTRUMENT OF FUTURE MISCHIEF. HERE LIES MY LAST VICTIM. ONLY MY DEATH NOW IS REQUIRED.

I SHALL CONSUME TO ASHES THIS MISERABLE FRAME, THAT ITS REMAINS MAY AFFORD NO LIGHT TO ANY CURIOUS AND UNHALLOWED WRETCH WHO WOULD CREATE ANOTHER AS I HAVE BEEN. I SHALL DIE. I SHALL NO LONGER FEEL THE AGONIES WHICH NOW CONSUME ME OR TO BE THE PREY OF FEELINGS UNSATISFIED, YET UNQUENCHED.

HE IS DEAD WHO CALLED ME INTO BEING; AND WHEN I SHALL BE NO MORE, THE VERY REMEMBRANCE OF US BOTH WILL SPEEDILY VANISH.

(CREATURE falls to his knees near Victor's body.)

CREATURE (looking heavenward) LORD GOD, CREATOR OF THE UNIVERSE, CREATOR OF EVERYONE BUT I, FORGIVE THIS FLAWED MAN, (pointing to VICTOR) AND THIS FLAWED SON OF MAN. (pointing to himself) HEAR ME NOW, BEFORE I DIE. WHEN I TOOK REVENGE, MY HEART FELT PAIN. I COULD NOT ACHIEVE MY GOAL. WHEN I HURT ANYONE, I SUFFERED, ANY JOY, MY CONSCIENCE STOLE. I WAS MADE FROM THE DEAD. I BELONG WITH THE DEAD. BUT I WOULDN'T SUFFER IF I HAD NO SOUL. YOUR CHILD TRIED TO EMULATE YOU; CREATE ONE IN HIS IMAGE. BUT WHEN HE FINISHED HE TRIED TO GO OFF AND PLAY.

BUT I'M NOT JUST A HOUSE OF BLOCKS THAT HE COULD PACK AWAY. FOR WHILE NOT GIVING ME BEAUTY, SOMEHOW HE GAVE ME A SOUL.

1 quoted and adapted from Shelley

4/11/16 Day of Wrath -61- rev. 6.8

(He will go to the panel to turn it on; climb a ladder and connects the cable to the ceiling, descends and then pulls a lever which destroys the lab and himself.)

(Thunder rumbles in the distance.)

[Choral Vocals begin here]

CREATOR'S CREATOR, I HAVE NO WHERE ELSE TO GO. CREATOR'S CREATOR, ACCEPT MY SOUL. TO THE ANGELS YOU DID INTONE, "IT IS NOT GOOD THAT MAN SHOULD LIVE ALONE." 1 FOR HIMSELF, THIS MAN AGREED; BUT YOUR EXAMPLE HE DID NOT HEED. CREATOR'S CREATOR, I HAVE NO WHERE ELSE TO GO. CREATOR'S CREATOR, ACCEPT MY SOUL.

TO THE ANGELS YOU DID INTONE, "IT IS NOT GOOD THAT MAN SHOULD LIVE ALONE." OUT OF COMPANIONSHIP, I, HE DID CHEAT. NOW MY CREATOR LIES AT MY FEET! (pointing to VICTOR)

(Thunder and lighting)

CREATOR'S CREATOR, YOU CANNOT MAKE ME WHOLE. CREATOR'S CREATOR, ACCEPT MY SOUL.

(The lab is destroyed, killing him.)
