Departmental Activities & Achievements

The Art Department Our GCSE, AS, A2 and Photography examination results were very good and compared very favourably with Northern Ireland Averages. The Art students were very successful in competitions last year. Prizes were awarded in all competitions entered including the Credit Union Art competition, Confucius Chinese New Year competition and most recently the Garden of reflection A level Art competition. The department also featured on the BBC Radio Ulster show ‘Soundscapes’ in January. The programme host Stephen McCauley interviewed students and recorded the sounds in and around the Art room to create a fascinating insight into the Lumen Christi College Art Department. The department completed the 2018/19 year with the annual end of year exhibition in the Sixth Form Study. Every student was represented with at least one piece of work. The PTA sponsored the hospitality at the event and we are very grateful for this generous contribution and the exhibition was considered to be a great success by all involved. Mr Kerr and Miss McNabb, undertook successful periods as a GCSE moderator and AS moderator respectively, undertaking work in schools across the North-West.

The Biology Department The Department was delighted with the excellent set of results achieved at GCSE and A2 and the score of 3 achieved in ALPS which rated the A level results in the top 25% of providers in the UK. All results were above the Northern Ireland grammar school averages. Key Stage 4 and 5 students were offered extra Biology classes and tuition after school to give them support in preparation for their module exams. Leaver’s Destinations – those students who studied A2 Biology went on to study a wide variety of courses. These include Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Computing and Information Technology, Economics, Law, Engineering, Medicinal Chemistry, Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics and Environmental Management with Professional Studies and many professions concerned with the care of the sick such as nursing, physiotherapy and speech therapy. One of the students started an Apprenticeship in Electrical Engineering.

The Business Studies Department Over the academic year 2018-2019, Year 14 Applied Business students worked on a project as part of their course. This project allowed them to create and develop a business selling candy canes at Christmas. The profits £600.29 were donated to Foyle Hospice and Foyle Search & Rescue, charities very close to our local community. The Business Studies Department ran an extra-curricular activity ‘Quick Start Programme – Young Enterprise’ after school for Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 students.

Lumen Christi College Annual Report to Board of Governors 2018-19 12

Mr Kindlon – Director at Seagate Technology visited the Year 13 GCE Professional Business Services students. He explained what his job role entails and gave the students an insight into the human resources function within Seagate The examination results achieved in GCSE Business and Communication Systems and GCE Professional Business Services in 2019 were excellent and compare most favourably with the NI grammar averages. The department achieved a grade 3 ALPS score putting the department in the top 25% of Business Departments in the UK in terms of value-added.

The Chemistry Department In February 2019 four students two from Year 10, one from Year 11 and one from Year 12 were runners – up in the Top of the Bench Competition at Queen’s University. In March 2019, three Year 13 students, represented the College in the Royal Society of Chemistry Analytical Competition at Stranmillis College and came third in the competition, each winning £40 book tokens for themselves. A Chemistry drop in Clinic was in operation three mornings a week for students seeking support or help with homework. There was also Extra Chemistry support classes for students in KS4 and Key Stage 5 students who were honing their exam technique.

The Chemistry department have produced a ‘Where are they now?” noticeboard, which showcases the destinations of our Chemistry A2 students from 2019. This year there is an increase in the number of students who have gone to study Chemistry as their primary degree choice. This includes one student studying Chemistry at Glasgow University. Two students who have chosen to study Medicinal Chemistry with a year in Industry at Queens. One student studying Chemical Engineering in Birmingham and four students who have chosen to study Pharmacy. This demonstrates that students have developed a real love for the subject and have decided to further their studies of the subject at Third Level.

The Drama Department In the academic year 2018-2019, the Drama Department delivered a revised scheme of work based on teacher and pupil feedback from the previous academic year. Pupil evaluations of each unit of work show that the changes made to the scheme of work have resulted in a Drama experience that is more relevant to the pupils and consequently, more enriching. In June 2019, the Drama Department participated in the “Primary 6 Activity Day”. This involved a series of Drama workshops including dramatic games and ‘The Harry Potter Experience’. The workshops were successful and were enjoyed by the girls who participated. Pupils from Years 9 and 11 helped facilitate these Drama workshops.

This was a great way to formally welcome our new cohort of Year 8 students and allow the students and their Form Teacher a chance to get to know each other a little better.

Onatti Theatre Performance Onatti Theatre Group is a regular visitor to our school and their plays are always very well received by our junior pupils. In October, Year 9 and 10 pupils attended a French play entitled “La salle des énigmes!” Both year groups were fully engaged in the fast-paced performance and a number of our talented linguists even appeared on stage! This was a most enjoyable afternoon for both pupils and teachers alike and it was a worthwhile experience to enhance our pupils’ linguistic skills.

French Film Club Lunchtime French Film Club ran weekly, with students watching some classics and contemporary film titles. In June, class 8B were selected to attend the premiere of Toy Story 4, a trip entirely funded by INTO Film club. Another class, 8D, had both their French and culinary skills tested when they got to follow an authentic French recipe for crêpes. De petits chefs en herbe!

Key Stage 5 In October, the Year 13 French class and members of staff participated in a Great European Bake Off and created cakes, cupcakes and desserts which either followed a traditional European recipe or they felt represented a European country. This was a really popular event for students and staff alike and all for a worthy cause too - the cakes were sold at break time and all money raised went to ZEST Counselling Services, a local charity who works with people suffering from mental health issues. Year 13 students participated in JUVENES TRANSLATORES, a competition organised by the European Commission to reward the best young translators in Europe. Leo Doherty, Anita Sibin and Orlaith Kelly were again ranked among the top 100 problem solvers in Ireland and participated in the Final competition in UCD in Dublin.

On the 14th of March, a team of 4 AS pupils took part in the national A Level French Debating Competition organised by Queen’s University of Belfast. It was a unique opportunity for pupils to have a day outside of school immersed in the French language. The team enjoyed the experience tremendously and Sara Reid was awarded Best Speaker. They benefitted from enhanced linguistic and social skills as well as increased confidence in using French for debating and public-speaking purposes. One area of focus is giving opinions and justifications, which is relevant to A-level study and preparation for employment and Third level education.

Professional Development A member of the French Department attended the Teacher Professional Learning day ‘Working with Human Forgetting Rates & Teaching Listening Bottom Up” with Dr. Gianfranco Conti that was organised by Queen’s University of Belfast. It was a very interesting event, both worthwhile and beneficial to teaching.

Pupils participated in fieldwork at all Key Stages including a river study by the Year 9 pupils in June, a study of the Curly Burn River by Year 12 pupils in September, a sand dune study in October and an urban study of Coleraine in March by the Year 13 pupils. Year 14 students also travelled to Queen’s University, Belfast in October, to attend a lecture relating to the ethnic conflict in Palestine. Thanks to the initiatives of the Eco-Committee relating to waste, litter and biodiversity, plastic Bottle bins were re-introduced into the canteen resulting in an 18% drop in general waste and a 29% increase in waste for recycling. Litter-picking was extended across all of the Key Stages and with the help of Year 13 ‘Geography Ambassadors’, all of the Form Classes could be seen in the school grounds throughout the year, removing bags of litter. Furthermore, the ‘Conservation Volunteers’ helped the Eco-committee to tidy up the small wooded area beside the bus bay and plant shade tolerant plants. On the 20th March 2019, following an inspection by 2 representatives of Eco-Schools, the college was awarded the Green Flag for the third time and efforts will be maintained to ensure the Green Flag is retained by the College.

The History Department The subject continues to be popular within Lumen Christi with a strong student uptake at both GCSE and A Level. Pupil performance at both GCSE and A level remains well above the N. I. grammar school average, and is testament to the continued hard work and dedication of all members of the History Department. A number of our Year 14 leavers are going on to pursue History courses at University. In October 2018 25 Year 11 students attended an all-day Civil Rights Conference in the Guildhall, Derry to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 5th October 1968 March in Derry. Also in October 2018 all of the Year 9 History students attended a workshop on the Siege of Derry in the school’s assembly hall. In November 2018 a Year 12 History class attended the Foyle Film Festival to see “They shall not Grow Old”, a film based on original footage from World War One. In March, a group of 60 Year 12, 13 and 14 students accompanied by Mr Hegarty, Mrs Carlisle, Mrs Dobbins, Dr Gormley, Mr Hulme and Mrs Owen, spent four action-packed days in Krakow where we visited the Salt Mines, Auschwitz-Birkenau, Wawel Royal Castle, Schindler’s Factory, the Jewish Quarter and Wodny Water Park. This was our second History trip to Krakow and once again it provided a very memorable learning experience for all those involved. In May our Year 14 students attended a lecture on the Partition of Ireland by the historian and author, Dr. Russell Rees, at St. Columb’s College as part of their A2 studies.

The Home Economics Department

The Brandywell and Bogside Health Forum facilitated the simulator baby initiative with year 11 students. The students involved received one afternoon’s training with these babies before taking them home and caring for them for the evening. The next day the babies were returned and a report was produced on the care of each individual baby. All students found this a very worthwhile experience and they made a presentation to their form classes highlighting their experiences. To celebrate Pancake Tuesday Key Stage 3 Home Economics classes made pancakes for themselves to enjoy on that day. The tradition of using up ingredients before Lent was discussed. To celebrate Healthy Eating week in June all year 8s made smoothies. They were able to choose their own fruits from a wide selection available and make a smoothie to drink in class to highlight healthy eating and trying to get their ‘5 a day’. In June Primary 6 girls were invited to take part in various sessions throughout the school. In the Home Economics Department, they were given the opportunity to prepare delicious Soda Bread Pizzas. Feedback from this event was very positive and the girls thoroughly enjoyed their time in Home Economics.

The Irish Department Our results at GCSE and AS and A2 levels were excellent and are above the N. Ireland Grammar School average. We are very pleased by all our students’ achievements. We are also very encouraged by the proportionate numbers of students opting to study Irish at GCSE and AS level in the new academic year; the latter being facilitated via the Foyle Learning Community partnership. One of our leavers from Year 14 has continued to study Irish taking up a place at Queen’s University studying a BA Joint Honours in Irish and Spanish. As always, the Department offered a range of opportunities beyond the classroom to promote the acquisition of skills and to optimise students’ learning experiences:

European Day of Languages: This occasion was marked with a visit from Dr. Pádraig Ó Tiarnaigh, Communications & Language Protection Officer with Conradh na Gaeilge, who delivered a careers’ talk to KS3 and 4 students. Students had the opportunity to win prizes in the interactive session, which was further enhanced by refreshments and a raffle for O’Neill half-zips.

Speak Irish for a Day: Staff members and senior students participated in the all-Ireland initiative, ‘Speak Irish for a Day’. They wore the official t-shirts throughout the day and ran a stall in the foyer at break time and lunchtime to publicise the event and to encourage all students to speak Irish.

Gael Linn Quiz: Year 10 students participated in the Gael Linn Quiz held in the White Horse Hotel on Tuesday 9th October 2018 for post-primary schools in the North West. Lumen Christi students were the overall winners on the day. The winning team included: Oisin Coulter, Ava Ferguson, Niamh Lamont and Oliver Mc Kibben. The students also had the opportunity to participate in Céilí dancing, and thoroughly enjoyed the cultural experience and the opportunity to interact with their peers from other local schools.

An Club Céilí: An Club Céilí was held at lunchtime for Key Stage 3 students school in the first term. Year 9 students who had learnt the dances the previous year helped to run the club. Students learned a range of céilí dances and the club prepared them well for the annual Céilí in November 2018. Céilí na Scoile: The Finvola Cé ilí Band provided the music for the annual cé ilí, which proved to be as popular as ever. In addition to their own participation, students enjoyed an exceptional display of Irish dancing, co-ordinated by Mrs Carlisle, and traditional Music, performed by Niamh Duffy (Harp) and Oisin Duffy (Fiddle). Students from Thornhill College, St Cecilia’s College and St Columb’s College joined us on the night. We recognise the

Lumen Christi College Annual Report to Board of Governors 2018-19 18 importance of friendships with local schools and the benefits these bring to students. Consequently, a group of Key Stage 3 Lumen Christi students attended the Thornhill St Patrick’s Day Cé ilí in March.

St. Patrick’s Day Mass: The annual Irish Mass in honour of St. Patrick was held on Wednesday 14th March 2019 and is always one of the highlights of our calendar. Mass was celebrated by Fr. Seán Ó Dónaill and was attended by all Year 8 students and all students of Irish in the school. The choir, soloist, traditional musicians and student readers greatly enhanced this special occasion.

Feis Dhoire Cholmcille: A number of KS3 students participated in Irish language competitions at Feis Dhoire Cholmcille. In the Year 8 Conversation competition Anna Slevin, 8E, achieved first place and Lorcán Doherty, 8E, achieved second place. Grace Martin, 8D, achieved first place in the Year 8 Poetry competition followed by Anna Slevin, 8E, in second place and Lorcán Doherty 8E in third place. Charities Involvement:

Hamper Appeal Every year early in December we ask the students of each form group to put together a food hamper. The hampers are then displayed outside the school chapel before being passed on to the Society of St Vincent de Paul and the Salvation Army. The hampers are then distributed to members of the local community who struggle during the Christmas period when their finances are severely stretched. The response and generosity of our students and their parents is truly overwhelming and greatly appreciated by those who benefit from this traditional event.

Shoebox Appeal This year was a tremendous success in terms of the Shoebox Appeal. We are indebted to Sharon Jack from Samaritan’s Purse who visited each of our assemblies to speak about the positive impact that the shoeboxes have on so many children who receive them. Over 400 shoeboxes were donated by students and staff within the College and we express our sincere thanks to everyone who supported this appeal.

The Mathematics Department The Department was delighted with the excellent set of results achieved at GCSE and A2, and the ALPS scores of 3 for A2 Maths and 2 for A2 Further Maths. Our Year10 pupils took part in the Junior Maths Challenge in April, and achieved 3 Gold, 12 Silver and 19 Bronze certificates. Department members attended INSET on the new CCEA A Level Maths and Further Maths specifications, and the new GCSE Maths specifications, and cascaded training to the whole department. Year 10 pupils took part in a Pilot Assessment for CCEA by completing an online adaptive Numeracy test. This was primarily designed to test the system for CCEA for rolling out to schools next year. The Department continued to develop and strengthen links with Third Level institutions. Contact was made with Queen’s University’s Actuary and Finance department, with a view to the department hosting an information session for pupils next year. The department also facilitated a Maths student teacher from St Mary’s College Belfast.

The Music Department

In addition to academic success the Music students of the college continue to display their talents across a variety of outlets:

Extra-Curricular:

During the year the department ran the following extra-curricular ensembles:

Senior Choir/ Orchestra/Jazz Orchestra/ Senior String ensemble/recorder group/brass group

Department Trip to In September the department organised a 2-day theatre trip to London. 44 music students from Year 11- 14 pupils and five members of staff took in the London sights, the Natural History Museum and the Warner Bros Harry Potter experience and attended a performance of Les Miserables. It was a wonderful experience and a great launch for our December production of a Night at the Musicals.

A Night at the Musicals In December 2018 the College presented – ‘A Night at the Musicals’. The show was a time travelling tribute through 100 years of the great Musicals from Showboat to The Greatest Showman. It featured a cast of seventy pupils with around thirty soloists.

Carol Service & Christmas Programme:

The School’s annual Carol service in the Long Tower Chapel once again proved a great success. The event continues to attract a considerable number of the Music Alumni. The Senior Choir along with past pupils came together, performing a traditional programme featuring a reprise of the beautiful choral pieces John Rutter’s Mary’s Lullaby and O Holy Night. Featured soloist in the service was Rachel Xu (O Holy Night).

The school orchestra, under the direction of Mrs Katey McNay also featured strongly as did the recorder group & folk group contributing to a very enjoyable mix of sacred and secular festive music.

Christmas Charity Programme: The senior music pupils took part in carol singing to raise funds for Save the Children and The Samaritans in Foyleside Shopping Centre on two separate occasions in December.

Spring Concert:

The Department organised its annual Celebration of Music- The Spring Concert in April where our A level music students performed to an audience of invited guests in a magnificent showcase for the College. The concert featured the very best of talent from year 14 as well as the senior choir, senior string group & orchestra. The orchestra performed the exciting ‘Hoe Down’ by Aaron Copland. The senior choir performed two pieces – “Shenandoah” and “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing”. Our Guest Past Pupil on the night was Megan Owens who left the College in 2014 and is now a studying to be a Music Teacher in Glasgow.

Alumni:

Membership of the Music Alumni is growing steadily with over 120 past pupils keeping in touch with the department through attendance at the Annual Carol Service, Spring Concert and via social media. We take enormous pride in the musical achievements of our Alumni – recent examples include Christina Tedders (West end stage actor – ‘Once’, ‘Calamity Jane’, ‘Cabaret’); Ciaran Kelly – Professional Tenor; Sean Doherty – Internationally renowned choral composer; Clodagh Kennedy – London based professional violinist, Damien McGinty – Celtic Thunder. Instrumental lessons:

During the past academic year, the pupils of the department have excelled in instrumental performance. We maintain high numbers taking EA music lessons on site as well as numerous others taking private tuition externally. Most of these students have already completed several instrumental grades. The pupils regularly perform in concerts and events outside of school such as in City of Derry Civic Choirs, Codetta, the EA Youth Orchestra as well as in local musicals and pantomimes.

The Music Department was privileged to have on board, the visiting tutors from the EA Music service. They were: Janet Cooke- violin, Maureen McGranaghan – violin, Karen McGillian – woodwind, David McGarrigle – Brass, Ann Bergin – oboe/bassoon, Michael McGinty – double bass, Elaine McCann – Cello.

The music staff are very proud of all pupils, too numerous to mention who excelled in the Derry Feis, Grade examinations, City of Derry Youth Choirs or achieved scholarships. They are all ambassadors for the Music Department and we thank them for their enthusiasm and dedication.

The Physics Department

Once again Mr Dunne offered the Year 13 the opportunity to get involved in the British Physics Olympiad Research project. This year 36 pupils worked on perfecting cubic or more precisely ‘Kubic’ bubble structures which are formed inside cubic and tetrahedral frames. The pupils had to perfect their soap solutions and camera angles to enable them to capture images of the structures from which the internal angles of their bubble structures could be measured. They then completed a report and submitted it to the BPhO.

A similar number of pupils braved the AS Physics challenge paper which examined their ability to apply their knowledge of Physics to a broad range of problems which covered theory from A Level to first year degree level.

This year Physics GCSE tutorials moved online and the department completed a full year of live streams for GCSE Physics delivered by Mr Smyth. This alternated week-on-week on a Wednesday night from Year 11 to 12 content. The weekly attendance averaged 20 – 30 students and a total watch time of 520 hours. We also extended this to Year 13 with a dedicated Lower 6th Practical class online over the Easter week.

For the first time the department has trialled the use of Google Classroom. In the past year, Year 13 have able to access their notes and study material via Google classroom. This process proved very useful and has been tweaked for a second test round this year. Eventually we hope to be able to offer this to all Physics students in the College.

The Physics Department would like to offer our thanks to Dr Alexey Dobrynin from Seagate who came into to run an after school Physics Club which was open to pupils from Year 11 to Year 14. Dr Dobrynin offered examples and tuition on a range of issues which included advanced problem solving, focusing on Oxford PAT and Cambridge Nat. Sciences past papers, Physics Olympiad problems, and Scientific Computing using Python.

Lumen Christi College Annual Report to Board of Governors 2018-19 32

Netball trip to European U-21 championships Pupils from all years travelled to Antrim forum on Saturday 3rd November to watch the U-21 European championships. All pupils had an enjoyable day meeting some of their Netball stars and witnessed a great display of Netball. They has a lovely shopping trip to junction 1 also.

Year 8 Inter - Class Cross Country Race 2018 The traditional inter -class cross country race for Year 8 pupils around the school grounds took place at the start of November. Each class was represented by 10 pupils, 3 boys and 3 girls with each pupil completing 2,000M in total. The race was won by Class 8A.

Class Leagues In June, the Year 12 GCSE PE Classes organised class leagues for our junior pupils as part of their GCSE Controlled Assessment. The leagues took place on the morning of sports day in Bay Rd Soccer and Templemore sports complex. It is always great to see so many students either playing or supporting their class during the Class Leagues. These leagues are highly competitive affairs and always produce a great sense of class spirit within the classes and a great sense of competition between the classes.

Personal Survival / Life Saving Personal survival/Life Saving for the Year 12 GCSE PE class took place from the end of September to the end of start of December at William Street Swimming Baths. Pupils do this activity as part of their GCSE Controlled Assessment. The students always enjoy this activity and achieve bronze and silver certificates for their efforts.

Sports Day Sports Day is the main event in our PE calendar. We have two divisions on Sports Day with some students qualifying for the premiership division and all other students opting to be in one event in the first division. The teacher tug of war was a big highlight for our pupils at the end of the day!! A most enjoyable day was had by all.

Sports Prize giving Sports Prize giving took place in June and as part of the Junior Prize giving Celebrations. Ben McCarron and Orlaith Watson, past pupils were our guest speakers. The Victor Ludorum and Victrix Ludorum were awarded to the best athletes in Year 8 – 11 based on the accumulated points won in the premiership division on Sports Day. Lumen Christi College Annual Report to Board of Governors 2018-19 33

The PE Department, as always would like to thank those many parents, support staff, outside coaches and teachers who assist in any way and, in particular, Mr Chris Ryan, who co-ordinates the sporting extra- curricular programme.

The Religious Studies Department

The Department was delighted with the excellent results achieved by students, especially at GCSE and A2. Our A2 students went on to study a huge variety of courses at university, including Law, European Planning, Midwifery, Teaching, Economics and Software Engineering.

Two Year 13 students were nominated to represent the school as Diocesan Ambassadors. Through this role they met with Bishop Donal Mc Keown once a term and discussed topical issues within the Church. They also presented ideas on how they feel the Church could be a more welcoming place for young people. They were inducted at the Mass for Catholic Schools in St. Eugene’s Cathedral on 24th January 19.

Working with the History Department, all A2 RE students attended a very informative talk by Dr Heaney on ‘Church and State.’ This linked in with the Synoptic Assessment aspect of their course and gave them a great and invaluable insight into the relationship between religion and state.

Chaplaincy

We spent this year consolidating the large amount of work and the many initiatives that have become a central part of College life. The Morning Prayer initiative continued to flourish and Fr Aidan Mullan celebrated Mass for the school community every Tuesday morning at 8:40am.

 With our tradition of First Friday Mass continuing, we also celebrated a number of Seasonal Masses. We celebrated twice weekly Mass during Advent and Lent and ended the year for our senior students with our Leavers’ Mass. A huge debt of gratitude is owed to the many priests from the Diocese of Derry who continue to support us in every way they can.  Fourteen students participated in the Pope John Paul II Annual Pilgrimage to Knock in September.  Our annual day of Reconciliation was held during Lent. This year we provided the sacrament for all students. We were supported by twenty-six priests from the Diocese.  Our Retreat Programme continued with Year 13 spending the day in the spirit of the Celtic Saints in the Iosas Centre. Our Year 10 group made the annual two journeys to Ards Friary, Co. Donegal. The Year 12 and 14 groups had a one-day retreat in the Gas Yard facilitated by Niall McNally of CAST Ministries. The Year 9 Retreat took place in school and was staff led. The Year 8 group spent a prayerful day in June under the direction of Mrs Maire Gormley from Buncrana Parish. Lumen Christi College Annual Report to Board of Governors 2018-19 34

Sixth Form students took part in a series of faith seminars on the themes of Human Life and Catholic Apologetics. Our thanks extend to the many teachers who give of their time and talents to facilitate this programme of retreats. We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful group.  We continued the tradition of having the Christmas Carol Service in the Long Tower Church.  Each day throughout the year the College Chapel was the venue for Adoration and Morning Prayer.  The school Chaplaincy service continues to provide a ‘listening ear’ for our students.

The Science Department 3 students entered the Big Bang Science competition held at St Mary’s College with a project on how water proof sun cream was. Their project won on the day and has been put forward for the UK Big Bang Science event in March 2020

A 6th year student will enter the BT Young Scientist competition this year. Her project, in collaboration with Ulster University, centres around how different genres of music can affect a subject’s focused attention on a short task. Her project has been accepted and will be showcased at the Dublin event.

The department completed a full year of live online lessons on a Wednesday evening. An average of 20 students per lesson attended and there are data correlations with attendance at these lessons and exam success (based on trackers and modular GCSE Exams)

Fifteen Year 10 students attended the Seagate Real World Science conference held in St Mary’s College in October to raise their awareness of STEM careers and opportunities.

We entered 2 teams of Key Stage 3 students into the SciQuest STEM quiz in February. After a spirited performance our teams reached the semi-finals but were eliminated at that stage.

The Spanish Department We are delighted with the uptake at both GCSE and A level. At GCSE 71 students have chosen Spanish. At AS 21 pupils have chosen to do Spanish and we hope to maintain these high numbers in the coming years. We are also very pleased that two of our leavers from last year have gone on to study Spanish at University. We ran our 11th annual Spanish Quiz for Charity at Easter. This year the we donated the proceeds (£100) to “Lasco”. This is a particularly important charity for our pupils as they are made aware of the plight of children in poverty stricken Latin American countries. This event is an excellent source of motivation for our pupils to take a keen interest in Spain and Hispanic culture in general and is now established as an integral part of our school calendar. We have organised a four -day trip to in June 2020. 41 pupils will be taking part accompanied by 5 members of staff. We hope that our pupils will enjoy the chance to experience Spanish culture at Lumen Christi College Annual Report to Board of Governors 2018-19 35 first hand and indeed relish the chance to bond with their peers. We feel strongly that this trip helps to promote Spanish in the school and that it encourages students to continue to study Spanish for GCSE and also A Level. We invited two of our past students back again this year to speak to our present A level Spanish students and give them advice on how to maximise their potential in Spanish. The Year 13 and 14 students found this to be most useful and we hope to continue this again in the future.

The Technology Department

Industrial Visit Year 13 students again visited E&I Engineering as part of CEIAG in Technology. The trip was organised through School Employer Connections to give the pupils an insight into engineering in industry and an opportunity to observe various machine processes that they study in class.

Toast and Technology Mr Molloy attended another “Toast and Technology” exhibition of coursework from a number of local post primary schools in St Mary’s College. As a department we showcased our students work, including GCSE, AS and A2 at the event. Technology teachers from the local schools collaborate and discuss coursework marking at each of the various exam levels.

Cardboard Engineering Through collaboration with the Extracurricular Coordinator, the Technology department provided “Cardboard Engineering” as an after-school club. This activity was a joint venture with “Imaging Partnership” and allowed the pupils to explore, in a very creative way, the intricacies and fun behind designing and engineering. The students provided extremely positive feedback on the venture, enhancing their knowledge of Engineering in a fun environment.

Work Experience During January 2019, in collaboration with UU Magee, year 13 Technology and Design students, had the opportunity to attend 2 days of Engineering work experience within the University. This was the second year of the work placement and the students again provided very positive commentary on the Engineering and IT experience they gained.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMME

The Outreach Programme for Sixth Form students is a central element of the realisation of the Vision and Aims of the school. As a Christian School, where pupils have so many gifts and are given so much, it is our moral responsibility to offer opportunities for them to give back to the local community. Students thus are expected to take on voluntary work throughout the year. The Community Outreach Programme is a practical way of encouraging pupils to express our Catholic ethos within the local community. Through supporting younger children in after-school clubs, providing music tuition and visiting residents in care homes, students are actively living out their calling as Christians to use their talents and gifts to help those in need. Twelve students participated in the Young Enterprise Project, four students opted to attend work placements that they arranged and four students participated in Mandarin Chinese classes. Volunteering by the sixth formers included:  Long Tower PS (after-school clubs)  Nazareth House PS (learning support)  Long Tower Senior Citizens Club  Training in Heartstart life-saving skills in local primary schools  Visitation of residential homes (Ardavon House; Greenhaw)  Providing Student Support in school  Music tuition in the Gas Yard Centre.  Public Relations Support Work The activities were viewed as positive experiences for both our students and our outreach partners. Some students expressed an interest in volunteering with charity organisations, namely Barnardos and the Foyle Hospice.
