Coach Shields is excited about the opportunity, always relishing more chances to strap it up for a game. In his first three seasons as head coach, JU has played more than 10 games only once. In 2016, the Dolphins lost a contest with Campbell at home due to Hurricane Matthew and in 2018 residuals from Hurricane Michael prevented Walsh from making it down for their game. The last time JU played 12 games in a season was 2008, when the Dolphins qualified for the Gridiron Classic thanks to its PFL Championship, and played Albany in its lone postseason game in program history.

TOUGH SHOES TO FILL Perhaps the toughest spot to fill for Jacksonville in the upcoming season is kicker Javier Arce-Ramirez, who became the first kicker in JU history to not miss a kick last year. He was 4-4 on field goal attempts, and connected on all 34 of his PAT tries. Additionally, he is tied for the most accurate kicker in Jacksonville history (for those the kicked for more than one season), having made 77% of the field goals he attempted in his three year career. So far, freshman Zach Benwick has handled all of the kicking duties, going 1-2 on field goals (making a 35 yarder and missing a 43 yarder at Presbyterian) and he is 4-6 on PATs (one blocked, one off the upright).

PRO ‘PHINS Several recent Dolphins have found success in various professional leagues, headlined by former wide receiver Andy Jones (‘15) catching his first career touchdown with the Detroit Lions. He was just this week signed to the Miami Dolphins practice squad. Former LB/DE Justin Horton (‘16) latched on with the Orlando Apollos of the short-lived Alliance of American Football, while former CB KJ Jenkins (‘16) has found success with the Cedar Rapids River Kings of the Indoor Football League.

ALL-AMERICAN ENCORE? Sophomore B-Back Garnett Nicolas made a splash in his first year in the Green, White & Gold, earning Freshman All-American honors from HERO Sports after rushing for 718 yards and nine touchdowns. He moved into the starting lineup in the third game of the season and totaled the second most rushing yards by a freshman in JU history. He topped the century mark in three of his final four games of 2018.

DEFENSIVE RESURGENCE Despite losing several keys players off the defense from last season, Head Coach Ian Shields is excited about the direction of the defense this season. Most of the starters are upperclassman who have logged significant playing time thoughout their careers to this point, plus the addition of several junior college transfers who could contribute right away. The defense is planning on using a variety of formations this year to take advantage of different personnel, as JU looks to slow down teams to help its dynamic offense stay on the field for even longer stretches this season.

PRESEASON HONORS Three Dolphins were named to the Preseason All-PFL Team, all three of who whom were recognized by the league at the conclusion of last season. Junior QB Calvin Turner Jr., sophomore B-Back Garnett Nicolas and redshirt-junior center Dane Cordell were hon- ored. Additionally, those three and five other Dolphins were part of Phil Steele’s 2019 Preseason All-PFL Teams. Both Turner Jr. and Cordell were First Teamers, with Nicolas, senior cornerback CJ Lewis making the Second Team and senior running back Irvin Riley, senior defensive lineman Crandall Maines, senior linebacker Caysaun Wakeley and redshirt-junior safety TJ Coley making the Third Team.

PRO PERSPECTIVE Jacksonville added three coaches with professional experience this season. Barksdale pass) IAN SHIELDS HEAD COACH Fourth Season Oregon State, 1994 Ian Shields enters his fourth season at the helm of the Jacksonville University football team in 2019. Tabbed as just the third head football coach in JU history in November of 2015, Shields has continued to change the culture of the program in his tenure. Shields’ sophomore campaign in 2017 saw the team improve two wins from the previous season, to a 7-4 overall record, including a 5-3 mark and a third-place finish in the Pioneer Football League. Steadied by a dynamic spread-option offensive attack, and an attacking turnover-reaping defense, the 17’ Dolphins put on quite a show on the field. The team ranked fifth in the Football Championship Subdivision, led the Pioneer Football League and shattered the school record in rushing offense, totaling 2,962 yards and averaging 269.3 yards-per-game. Additionally, the team set new marks in rushing attempts (601) and rushing touchdowns (31) in a single season. Under Shields’ leadership, the Dolphins broke multiple single-game records during the season, highlighted by an unprecedented rushing performance against Guilford College on Sept. 30, 2017, which ended in 514 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. 2017 saw 13 players receive All-PFL accolades, with defensive back Griffin Garland, linebacker Trevor Tufano and running backs Irvin Riley and Keenan Simpson all earning Second-Team PFL honors. During the season, quarterback Rylan Wells (3x), linebacker Thomas Oporto and kicker Javier Arce-Ramirez were named PFL Players of the Week, while Wells (honorable mention) and Tufano took home STATS FCS National Player of the Week honors. Off the field, five Dolphins took home PFL Academic All-Conference Awards, while a record 54 players earned a place on the league’s Fall 2017 Academic Honor Roll. The squad also recorded a 3.18 GPA for the year, the highest in program history. Shields’ program continued its involvement in the community, serving over 350+ hours of service at local charities, schools, and civic organizations. SHIELDS YEAR-BY-YEAR In his inaugural campaign in 2016, Shields set the foundation of the program and guided Jacksonville to success on the PLAYING HISTORY field, in the classroom, and in the community at-large. • Oregon State -- 1990-93 On the field, the Dolphins finished the season with an overall record of 5-5, which included a 4-3 mark in league play, Quarterback and also saw the program’s second NFL free agent signee in as many years in linebacker Justin Horton (Jacksonville Jaguars). HEAD COACHING RECORD The team set multiple program records with (then) single-season marks in rushing yards (2,482 yards) and rushing Year School Record Conf. Whileat Lenoir-Rhyne, Shields won a conference championship, was named the South Atlantic 2016 Jacksonville 5-5 4-3 5th Conference Coach of the Year, and twice had his offense lead the nation in rushing. 2017 Jacksonville 7-4 5-3 3rd In the 2015 season, the Bears finished 6-5 (5-5 SAC), had six players named all-conference, and saw All-American of- 2018 Jacksonville 2-8 1-7 10th fensive lineman Joe Ray named a finalist for the Gene Upshaw Trophy as the top lineman in Division II. Ray also won the 2019 Jacksonville 1-2 0-0 --- Jacobs Trophy as the top lineman in the South Atlantic Conference. Shields’ first year at Lenoir-Rhyne featured an 11-1 record. Finishing 7-0 in conference play, the program put together its first perfect conference season in 52 years, while Career 40-40 20-17 also setting an NCAA Division II single-season record for rushing yards (416.2 ypg) behind a spread-option attack. COACHING TIMELINE Prior to Lenoir-Rhyne, Shields spent five seasons as the associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Army (2009-13). Army’s 2014-15 Lenoir-Rhyne Head Coach offense topped the NCAA Division I rushing list in both 2011 and 2012, the first time the Black Knights led the country in that category in consecutive seasons since Col. Earl “Red’ Blaik led the 1944 and 1945 squads. The 2012 team set 2009-13 Army Off. Coord. / Assoc. HC Academy records for both total rushing yards (4,438) and rushing yards per game (369.8 ypg). The 2011 squad was the 2008 Cal Poly Offensive Coordinator first in Academy history to crack the 4,000-yard mark (4,158).Shields was also part of a staff that led Army to its first 2006-07 Eastern Oregon Head Coach bowl victory in 25 years in 2010, a win over SMU in the Armed Forces Bowl. 2004-05 Cal Poly Co-Offensive Coordinator Prior to his time at Army, Shields held coaching positions at multiple levels through the first 14 years of his coaching 2003 Bucknell Offensive Coordinator career. This included two seperate stints as the Offensive Coordinator at Cal Poly (2008; 2004-05), his firsthead coach- 2000-02 Saint Mary’s Offensive Coordinator ing job, which came at Eastern Oregon University from 2006-07, and Offensive Coordinator positions at Bucknell (2003), Saint Mary’s College (2000-02), and Eastern Oregon (1997-99). 1997-99 Eastern Oregon Offensive Coordinator 1994-96 Oregon State Graduate Assist. A 1994 graduate of Oregon State University and former starting quarterback for the Beavers, Shields began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, working with the Beavers’ linebackers, tight ends, quarterbacks and running backs, while also assisting with the special teams unit during his time with the team from 1994-96. He moved on to his first stop at Eastern Oregon thereafter, assuming offensive coordinator duties with the team from 1997-99. During those three years, he helped develop the Mountaineers’ all-time leading passer, rusher and receiver, and helped the offense establish 35 new school records. A native of Oregon City, Oregon, Shields lettered three times in football and twice in baseball at Oregon State, and was elected team captain of the gridiron during his senior year. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in speech communication in 1994 and earned a master’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from OSU in 1997. One of the most decorated prep athletes in the State of Oregon in his era, Shields was an All-State competitor in football, basketball and baseball while attending Oregon City High School. He was named The Oregonian State Player of the Year and the Bobby Dodd State Player of the Year his senior season.
