Hebert3 1 Department of Biology, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States of America, 2 Department of Entomology, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., United States of America, 3 Department of Integrative Biology, Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, University of Guelph, Guelph, Canada Abstract Background: An intense, 30-year, ongoing biodiversity inventory of Lepidoptera, together with their food plants and parasitoids, is centered on the rearing of wild-caught caterpillars in the 120,000 terrestrial hectares of dry, rain, and cloud forest of Area de Conservacion Guanacaste (ACG) in northwestern Costa Rica. Since 2003, DNA barcoding of all species has aided their identification and discovery. We summarize the process and results for a large set of the species of two speciose subfamilies of ACG skipper butterflies (Hesperiidae) and emphasize the effectiveness of barcoding these species (which are often difficult and time-consuming to identify). Methodology/Principal Findings: Adults are DNA barcoded by the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, Guelph, Canada; and they are identified by correlating the resulting COI barcode information with more traditional information such as food plant, facies, genitalia, microlocation within ACG, caterpillar traits, etc. This process has found about 303 morphologically defined species of eudamine and pyrgine Hesperiidae breeding in ACG (about 25% of the ACG butterfly fauna) and another 44 units indicated by distinct barcodes (n = 9,094), which may be additional species and therefore may represent as much as a 13% increase. -

A riqueza da fauna de borboletas da floresta ombrófila densa de baixada (até 600m) é comparada entre ambas as localidades, registrando-se uma extensão recente da área de ocorrência de Parides ascanius (Cramer, 1775). -

A pyrgine skipper from Rondônia, Brazil, is described from two males. This species, with secondary sex characters including a shiny area on the ventral forewing overlaying a pronounced hump on the hindwing costa, is named Speculum speculum gen. nov. and sp. nov. Its affinities, although not yet certain, may be with the tribe Erynnini. Additional key words: Ectomis, genitalia, Telemiades, Tosta, tropical rainforest. Investigations of butterflies in Rondônia, Brazil, have broad, shining gray speculum covering about basal 2/5 from anterior edge of discal cell to anal margin where extended distad about 1/2 indicated that the region has a megarich fauna of these distance to tornus; oval brown brand in speculum and about 1/2 its insects (Brown 1984, 1996; Emmel & Austin 1990; width, situated above to slightly below lower discal cell vein, centered Austin et al., in press). The site, with typical lowland slightly distad of midpoint of wing base and origin of CuA2; tuft of dark bristle-like scales originating from posterior base of brand. tropical rainforest (Emmel & Austin 1990, Emmel et al., Hindwing (Figs. 1–2): Costa highly modified basad, produced as in press), has a distinctly seasonal climate with a hump far cephalad to cover forewing speculum, upper surface of pronounced dry season from May through September. -

Nearly 200 additional species occur in the adjacent countries of Belize, El Salvador, and Honduras, in the southernmost states of Mexico, or both north and south of Guatemala, and many of these will likely be recorded in the country with additional field work and continuing searches of museum collections. The butterfly faunas of most regions of the Neotropics are, at best, of surrounding countries, and, especially, taxonomic revisions for superficially known. These butterflies aggregate to feed on the droppings of birds attracted to the insects flushed by advancing swarms. In contrast to the female-dominated use of bird droppings by ithomiine butterflies, skipper use was almost exclusively by males. Rapid Assessment Program RAP Working Papers 6 The Tambopata-Candamo Reserved Zone of Southeastern Perú: A Biological Assessment CONSERVATION INTERNATIONAL NOVEMBER 1994 Conservation Priorities: The Role of RAP Our planet faces many serious environmental problems, among them global climate change, pollution, soil erosion, and toxic waste disposal. At Conservation International (CI), we believe that there is one problem that surpasses all others in terms of importance because of its irreversibility, the extinction of biological diversity. Conservation efforts still receive only a tiny fraction of the resources, both human and financial, needed to get the job done. As a result of this, we must use available resources efficiently, applying them to those places with the highest concentrations of diversity which are at most immediate risk of disappearing. CI uses a strategic, hierarchical approach for setting conservation investment priorities. At a global level, we have targeted the “hotspots,” 15 tropical areas that hold a third or more of all terrestrial diversity and are at great risk. Our global priorities also focus on major tropical wilderness areas and the “mega- diversity” country concept, which highlights the importance of the national entities that harbor high biodiversity. We are now undertaking a series of priority-setting exercises for other major categories of ecosystems, among them marine systems, deserts, and dry forests. The next level of priority setting is the bioregional workshop, a process where experts assemble their combined knowledge of an area to map regional conservation priorities using CI’s geographic information system (CISIG). We have also taken a taxon-based approach, working with the Species Survival Commission of IUCN to produce action plans for key groups of organisms. -

AUSTIN Nevada State Museum and Historical Society, 700 Twin Lakes Drive, Las Vegas, Nevada 89107, USA ABSTRACT.- The pyrgine genera Anastrus Hiibner, 1824, and Tosta Evans, 1953 (Hesperiidae), found in the vicinity of Cacaulandia in central Rondonia, Brazil, are discussed and illustrated. Two new species, Anastrus virens n. sp. and Tosta capra n. sp., are described. Taxonomic comments and comparisons with material from other areas are made in some instances.
