Join us for Monday morning musical programs this spring! These musicians are part of our Lifetime Learning program of inspirational courses and engaging speakers—and we're pleased to offer you the chance to attend. While Lifetime Learning is geared towards those 55+, we welcome all music lovers to these online events.

A lifetime of Lifetime Learning Lifetime Learning was founded in 1978 by a group of intellectually curious senior citizens. Beginning with meetings in private homes, it quickly outgrew those venues and went on to run at several local institutions. Since Spring 2020 we’ve held our program live online. We’re grateful for your continued support and we’re looking forward to seeing you in person this Fall.

Thanks Lifetime Learning would not exist without our speakers, performers, and teachers; we thank them in advance for their support of our program. Many thanks also to Music Coordinator Clara Chan.

Voice of the Viola: Sarah Darling (viola) and April Sun (piano)

The viola is often referred to as the instrument whose timbre most recalls the sound of the human voice. The viola's "voice" gained recognition in a sustained way during the Romantic era, when long and lush melodies started to pair perfectly with the instrument's spirit. This program explores a broad repertoire for this vocal instrument, from Joseph Joachim's "Hebrew Melodies" to Rebecca Clarke and 's twentieth- century explorations of its dark timbre, anchored by a variety of French and German song transcriptions in which the instrument will do its very best to speak—and sing!

“A tireless force of musical curiosity, skill, and enthusiasm” and “the one to up the ante” (Boston Musical Intelligencer), Sarah Darling holds leading roles in A Far Cry, Musicians of the Old Post Road, Boston Baroque, Les Bostonades, Gut Reaction, and Antico Moderno, and performs with Boston Early Music Festival, Emmanuel Music, Newton Baroque, Sarasa, Boston Ballet Orchestra, and Carmel Bach Festival. Ms. Darling studied with James Dunham, , Wolfram Christ, , and Kim Kashkashian at Harvard, Juilliard, Amsterdam, Freiburg, and New England Conservatory. She has recorded with Linn, Paladino, Azica, MSR, Centaur, Naxos (solo album), and Crier Records (two Grammy-nominated CDs). Ms. Darling teaches at Longy School, co-directs Harvard Baroque Chamber Orchestra, and blogs regularly here: www.listeningdeliberately.com.

Boston-based pianist April Sun co-founded the Meadowlark Trio and frequently plays in ensembles such as Phoenix and Cape Cod Chamber Orchestras. She has collaborated with members of Chiara Quartet, Escher Quartet, Cleveland Orchestra, Toronto Symphony, and St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. Ms. Sun has served as both an artist fellow and a general manager at Music for Food, generating funds for food pantries. April was an Artist-in-Residence at Judson Park , bringing concerts to seniors. She teaches at Brookline Music School and is a staff pianist at New England Conservatory and Boston University.
