VISIONS OF 3 A Message From André Lewis

Welcome, and thank you for joining us for Visions of Swan Lake, the latest digital performance from Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet. Prepare yourself for a truly remarkable experience, where you will see the incredible artistry of our RWB dancers performing one of the most timeless and enduring ballets of all-time, made specially for your screens and devices.

Visions of Swan Lake is the classic Tchaikovsky tale reimagined and revitalized for our time of physical distancing. Safety has been the RWB’s utmost priority, and everything you will see and hear in this performance was produced with careful consideration for the health and well-being of all involved. For all of our efforts, this new version of a beloved ballet fills me with pride and a renewed sense of hope for the future.

The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, our Arts Partner for Visions of Swan Lake, is responsible for the incredible original score accompanying the dancers’ performances. Recorded in the Centennial Concert Hall for a more-accurate aural experience, no exception was made in our pursuit of the authentic theatre-going experience that many of us missed over the past eleven months. In order to truly bring you closer to the action, the RWB partnered with FRANK Digital to produce the video for Visions of Swan Lake. The resulting performance offers audiences a new way to experience ballet from the RWB. Finally, audiences can see the intricate details permeating our hand-crafted costumes and masks, observe with clarity the depth and artistry our dancers bring to each role, and enjoy every breathtaking motion and flourish in beautiful high-definition video. With support from our donors, patrons, and audience members, we will continue to build our capacity to create beautiful works of art in the digital space. We hope you enjoy this special digital performance of Visions of Swan Lake and will continue to join us for the remaining shows of our 81st season.

André Lewis, Artistic Director & CEO

4 CANADA'S ROYAL WINNIPEG BALLET Credits & Synopsis

CHOREOGRAPHY Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake is a tale of forbidden love, deception, and powerful Marius Petipa magic. Visions of Swan Lake features the memorable moments, opulent Lev Ivanov costuming, and incredible music from the timeless ballet. Let the artists take you through the endearing tale of Price Siegfried and his beloved Swan MUSIC Queen Odette in Visions of Swan Lake. Once upon a time… The story of Swan Lake begins on Prince Siegfried’s 21st birthday. The PRINCIPAL festivities are underway, but the prince is melancholic. His mother, the Queen, CONDUCTOR has told him it is time to find a bride, but Siegfried has not found his true love Julian Pellicano amongst the eligible nobles. Seeking a distraction from his worries, Prince COSTUME DESIGN Siegfried learns of a flock of swans sighted over the lake from the huntsmen Peter Farmer and embarks on a hunt. When Prince Siegfried approaches Swan Lake to get a better shot, the prince SET DESIGN is startled to see a swan take on a human form. Instantly, Siegfried falls in love Michael Eagan with the swan-turned-beautiful maiden, Odette, and vows to be true to her. ORIGINAL STAGING Odette tells Siegfried that she and the other swans of the lake are under the Galina Yordanova spell of an evil magician, Baron Von Rothbart, which turns them into swans at dawn every day, and only an oath of undying love can break the sorcerer’s LENGTH curse. 60 minutes The next night there is a ball at the castle in Siegfried’s honour and guests are invited from all over the world to attend. As the Jester begins the evening’s entertainments, the prince is overjoyed to see Odette at the ball, but something seems different. Little does Siegfried know, Von Rothbart has transformed his own daughter, Odile, to look like Odette and deceive the prince. The trick works and the Prince unwittingly declares his undying love to Odile, breaking his vow to Odette. Soon the prince realizes his terrible mistake as Odette appears to him in a vision and explains the deception. Having failed his one true love, the heartbroken Siegfried runs to the lake to find Odette, resigned to her fate, trapped in the form of a swan forever. The pure of heart Odette forgives Siegfried and the two reconcile. Now, more determined than ever to break the sorcerer’s spell, the prince confronts Von Rothbart. In the ensuing battle, the evil magician is defeated, effectively ridding the lake of its curse. Prince Siegfried then returns to Odette and, having finally fulfilled his vow, the two are reunited in true love’s embrace.

8 CANADA'S ROYAL WINNIPEG BALLET Creative Team Biographies

André Lewis | Artistic Director & CEO André Lewis has spent the majority of his career with Canada’s first professional dance company, accepting the position of Artistic Director in 1996. Since then, Lewis has been the driving force behind the new and innovative works that have dramatically rejuvenated the Company’s repertoire. Lewis has commissioned numerous blockbuster ballets such as Mark Godden’s Dracula in 1998, Jorden Morris’ critically acclaimed Peter Pan in 2006 and Moulin Rouge ® - The Ballet in 2009. He was instrumental in the 1999 creation of a new Nutcracker for the Company and in 2013, Lewis commissioned another outstanding new creation in conjunction with New York choreographer Lila York. The full-length ballet The Handmaid’s Tale was a bold adaptation of the novel of the same name by Governor General Award- winning Canadian author, Margaret Atwood. In 2014 for the RWB’s 75th anniversary season, Lewis commissioned choreographer Mark Godden to create the groundbreaking work Going Home Star – Truth and Reconciliation representing the many stories, both told and untold, of Indian Residential School Survivors and their families. Lewis has been a judge for the Varna International Ballet Competition, USA International Ballet Competition, and the Youth American Grand Prix. Further underscoring Lewis’ passion for dance are his multiple appearances at the Rural Retreat for International Dance Leaders, held in England. His work has been recognized through receiving both the Governor General’s Meritorious Award and the Jubilee Medal.

Julian Pellicano | Principal Conductor Conductor Julian Pellicano has rapidly established himself as a leading interpreter of music across a broad spectrum of genres, traditions, and time periods, leading the Winnipeg Free Press to proclaim that “his versatility is truly astonishing.” Whether it be traditional and contemporary symphonic repertoire, classical and modern ballet, opera, films live with orchestra, pops, musical theater, multi-media productions, workshops, or his carefully programmed concerts for young listeners, Pellicano brings an incisive musicality and collaborative spirit to every performance. Pellicano’s 2019-2020 season marks his first as the Principal Conductor of the RWB. Pellicano has also risen to the role of Associate Conductor of the WSO, after six seasons as the orchestra’s Resident Conductor. Additionally, Pellicano will guest conduct the Louisiana Philharmonic, the Cincinnati Symphony with Cincinnati Ballet, the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, and will return to the Vancouver Symphony, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, where he will be conducting on tour with the RWB. Pellicano’s career grew out of unconventional beginnings, performing as a self-taught drummer, percussionist, timpanist, and accordionist, in styles ranging from folk to blues and jazz, rock and punk, and more traditional ensembles and orchestras. He went on to study percussion at the Peabody Conservatory, the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, and the Yale School of Music. As a percussionist, he has performed in concert halls and festivals in North America, Europe and Asia.

9 Galina Yordanova | Staging Galina Yordanova trained for nine years at Baku, in the former USSR, and for five years with the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow, where she received her Teacher’s Diploma in 1960. She holds diplomas in Choreography and Teacher Training from the G.I.T.S. in Moscow. Yordanova was Ballet Mistress of the Varna Norodna Opera in Bulgaria, and also worked extensively with the Ballet der Deutschen Oper Berlin and with companies in Madrid and Valencia, Spain, and in Nagoya and Kyoto, Japan. In 1980, Yordanova began to spend a portion of each year in Winnipeg, teaching at the RWB School Professional Division Summer Session. Her expert teaching of the Russian style contributed to the development of this teaching style in the RWB School Professional Division. In 1995, she joined the artistic faculty full-time, as Resident Guest Teacher. She worked extensively with the RWB dancers to prepare them for the Company’s 1987 premiere of Swan Lake, which she staged in the Russian style. For the RWB’s 1999-2000 season, Yordanova, along with Nina Menon, choreographed a new version of Nutcracker for the Company, which premiered in Ottawa at the National Arts Centre in 1999.
