Pada masa itu, para African- American yang sering disebut negro mengalami penindasan hak asasi, dengan dijadikan budak oleh bangsa kulit putih. Dapat dikatakan bahwa Jazz adalah manifestasi kesedihan bangsa kulit hitam yang diterjemahkan menjadi sebuah musik untuk menghibur diri mereka. Musik jazz sulit untuk didefinisikan, namun jazz sangat identik dengan improvisasi, dan bukanlah suatu jenis irama (3). Musik jazz bersifat ekspresif, maka permainan dapat ditangkap dengan manis atau tidak oleh penikmatnya, sangat bergantung pada kondisi sang musisi saat itu. Bahkan mood atau keadaan psikologis musisi menentukan ke-apikan improvisasi yang bisa dicapai. Ketrampilan dan jiwa seni seorang musisi juga sangat berpengaruh pada bagus tidaknya permainan musik mereka. “Musik jazz lahir dengan dasar blues” seperti yang disampaikan oleh Samboedi dalam bukunya, “Jazz: Sejarah dan Tokohnya”(6). Pada sekitar tahun 1897 baru mulai dikenal bentuk ragtime, pada waktu itu ditunjukkan oleh permainan piano tunggal di bar-bar atau saloon. Blues dan Ragtime kemudian menjadi bentuk boogie-woogie pada perkembangan berikutnya. Pada sekitar tahun 1917, para masyarakat kulit hitam yang tinggal di New Orleans memainkan musik jazz yang mempunyai ciri khas, lalu kemudian dikenal sebagai corak New Orleans (7).
