McRae ...................................................... 331 ————————————— vii Foreword The representation of exceptional scientists, broad range of papers, and quality of research present- ed at this symposium are truly remarkable, and they underscore the progress made since the 1980s, when publication of anything related to Hawaiian streams was difficult because interest at all levels was minimal, and only a few pioneering researchers were willing to commit time to the subject. The establishment of the Water Code in Hawai‘i and the formation of the Commission on Water Resource Management under the Department of Land and Natural Resources encouraged the Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR), which is assigned responsibility by Statute for the manage- ment and protection of all living aquatic resources in Hawai‘i, to focus on expanding the informa- tion base to assist in regulatory decision-making and lend credence to the development of instream flow standards. Fortunately, an existing collaboration between Dr. Robert Nishimoto (DAR) and Dr. J. Michael Fitzsimons (Louisiana State University) provided the seed to develop the program. The resultant 1990 Symposium on Freshwater Stream Biology and Fisheries Management, entitled New Directions in Research, Management, and Conservation of Hawaiian Freshwater Stream Ecosystems, represented the first effort to organize existing state-of-the-art knowledge and bring varied interests together. It led to development of a longer range plan which with the current symposium has effectively been accomplished with reference to its principal objectives. The mark of good science, however, is that the advance of knowledge inevitably leads to more questions. The discussions during this symposium have posed an important set of new questions. Application of the advancing knowledge to management has been lagging for institutional rea- sons more related to organization and influencing decision-makers than to the quality of the science involved, but that is no excuse for stepping back from new investigations to advance the science. In fact, as the institutional deficits are reduced, the demand for good science will increase rapidly. Effective steps to move the management component ahead have in fact been recommended in this symposium. We are nevertheless at a crossroad. If there is not regulatory commitment to rational manage- ment, there is danger that this symposium will become an end point

CLENCH CURATOR OF MOLLUSKS, MUSEUM of COMPARATIVE ZOOLOGY INTRODUCTION The following list of titles and scientific names of both plants and mollusks is complete, so far as can be traced, for the work done by Dr. Cooke. He left, however, several manuscripts in various stages of completion, which in time will be published. The type specimens of most of the species, subspecies, and varieties de- scribed by Dr. Cooke are in Bishop Museum and the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia; but many type specimens were generously donated to other institutions by Dr. Cooke, for his was an exceedingly broad policy. Any type series in sufficient numbers was divided and such duplicates as could be spared sent on exchange or as outright gifts to other institutions. He believed that this policy not only aided other workers in their reference to authentic material but safeguarded type specimens by housing them in various parts of the world. With few exceptions, the new species described by Dr. Cooke, either alone or jointly with other authors, were based on material from Polynesia and Melanesia, wherein lay his main interest. His knowledge of these areas was profound, and his library contained most of the malacological papers dealing with Polynesia and Melanesia. His collection contained many specimens that had been compared with type material in other institutions. It is the fifth most speciose saltwater teleost genus, and second only to the 129 species in the eel genusGymnothorax in the coral-reef ecosystem (Eschmeyer et al. 2017). Information on the systematics and biology of the species of the genus is scattered in the literature, often in obscure references, and, other than the taxonomic key to all the species in the genus (Greenfield & Winterbottom 2016), no recent overview of the genus exists.

  • Evolution and Comparative Morphology of the Euglenophyte
    EVOLUTION AND COMPARATIVE MORPHOLOGY OF THE EUGLENOPHYTE PLASTID by PATRICK JERRY PAUL BROWN (Under the Direction of Mark A. Farmer) ABSTRACT My doctoral research centered on understanding the evolution of the euglenophyte protists, with special attention paid to their plastids. The euglenophytes are a widely distributed group of euglenid protists that have acquired a chloroplast via secondary symbiogenesis. The goals of my research were to 1) test the efficacy of plastid morphological and ultrastructural characters in phylogenetic analysis; 2) understand the process of plastid development and partitioning in the euglenophytes; 3) to use a plastid- encoded protein gene to determine a euglenophyte phylogeny; and 4) to perform a multi- gene analysis to uncover clues about the origins of the euglenophyte plastid. My work began with an alpha-taxonomic study that redefined the rare euglenophyte Euglena rustica. This work not only validly circumscribed the species, but also noted novel features of its habitat, cyclic migration habits, and cellular biology. This was followed by a study of plastid morphology and development in a number of diverse euglenophytes. The results of this study showed that the plastids of euglenophytes undergo drastic changes in morphology and ultrastructure over the course of a single cell division cycle. I concluded that there are four main classes of plastid development and partitioning in the euglenophytes, and that the class a given species will use is dependant on its interphase plastid morphology and the rigidity of the cell. The discovery of the class IV partitioning strategy in which cells with only one or very few plastids fragment their plastids prior to cell division was very significant.

Abstract A checklist of shallow (to 60 m depth) reef fishes is provided for the Bird’s Head Peninsula region of West Papua, Indonesia. The area, which occupies the extreme western end of New Guinea, contains the world’s most diverse assemblage of coral reef fishes. The current checklist, which includes both historical records and recent survey results, includes 1,511 species in 451 genera and 111 families. Respective species totals for the three main coral reef areas – Raja Ampat Islands, Fakfak-Kaimana coast, and Cenderawasih Bay – are 1320, 995, and 877. In addition to its extraordinary species diversity, the region exhibits a remarkable level of endemism considering its relatively small area. A total of 26 species in 14 families are currently considered to be confined to the region. Fax: 55 (17) 224-8692 (Received 25 February 2002, accepted 15 September 2002) Abstract — Fourteen culture isolates of freshwater acrochaetioid algae from distinct regions around the world were analysed, including the reddish species Audouinella hermannii, the dubious blue-greenish species A. pygmaea, and “Chantransia” stages from distinct taxonomic origins in the Batrachospermales sensu lato (Batrachospermaceae, Lemaneaceae and Thoreaceae). Four isolates (two ‘Chantransia’ stages and two species of Audouinella, A. hermannii and A. pygmaea) were tested under experimental conditions of temperature (10-25 oC), irradiance (65 and 300 µmol photons m–2 s–1) and photoperiod (16:8 h and 8:16 h light/dark cycles). Plant colour is proposed as the only vegetative char- acter that can be unequivocally applied to distinguish Audouinella from ‘Chantransia’, blue- greenish representing “Chantransia” stages and reddish applying to true Audouinella species (also forming reproductive structures other than monosporangia, e.g. tetrasporan- gia). Some isolates of A. pygmaea were proven to be unequivocally ‘Chantransia” stages owing either to production of juvenile gametophytes or to derivation from carpospores. No association of the morphology of A. pygmaea was found with any particular species, thus it should be regarded as a complex involving many species of the Batrachospermales sensu lato, as is also the case with A.
