10 Years of Opera at the Cinema The prestigious New York Opera house celebrates its 10th anniversary. During this 2017-2018 anniversary season, the Met brings together once again the greatest operatic artists of the moment, including Joyce DiDonato, Sonya Yoncheva, Vittorio Grigolo and Plácido Domingo. 5 new productions will be presented including the tragedy Norma who will open the ball for a new season full of emotion. The great Gaulish priestess Norma has a secret relationship with Pollione, a Roman proconsul in Gaul, with whom she has two sons. When she learns that he now has eyes only for the young Adalgisa, Norma is taken madly: in order to take revenge on Pollione, she considers her own death and that of their children. The Met Opera strikes hard for the start of the season with two American divas at the top in this pearl of Italian bel canto. After an evening at the opera, guests meet for dinner with the aristocrat Edmundo Nóbile. Once the meal is over, the guests realize that they can not leave the house. The door is open, but an invisible force prevents anyone from entering or leaving ... The Englishman Thomas Adès, inescapable figure of the contemporary opera, adapts here the mythical film of Luis Buñuel and directs the orchestra of the Met on the occasion. In this new production, he scrutinizes the company with a magnifying glass and finely combs a closed session where the emotions and hidden personalities of each are unveiled in broad daylight. The beautiful singer Tosca is the object of the blackmail of the corrupt policeman Scarpia: he holds prisoner his lover the painter Cavaradossi. If she does not give herself to Scarpia, Cavaradossi will be led on the field to the scaffold ... The sulphurous duo formed by Vittorio Grigolo and Sonya Yoncheva promises an explosive evening where passion and drama will be at their height. In the Paris of the nineteenth century, it is the love at first sight between Rodolfo and Mimì, both penniless. While Mimì is little by little eaten away by the disease, Rodolfo wants to leave her in the hope that she will take a new rich lover who will allow her to live. The new rising personalities of the Met come together to bring to life once again the famous production of Franco Zeffirelli. The Bulgarian Sonya Yoncheva and the American Michael Fabiano will play the accursed lovers Mimì and Rodolfo, a duet that will revive the drama and lyricism of Puccini's score. Luisa and Rodolfo love a forbidden love. Wurm, the steward of Rodolfo's father, makes Luisa sing and force her to marry him. Rather than living in solitude and despair, Rodolfo prepares a poisoned beverage that will bring Luisa and him into death. This 10th season will include 5 new productions: Norma, The Exterminator Angel, Tosca, Così Fan Tutt and Cinderella.
