What to do. For students.

1. You can work with a friend or two friends! Teams can be different each day.

2. Do the tasks and enter your answers in your maths book and show your teacher.

3. If you are right you will get the next task.

4. If you are wrong, answer the task again.

5. When you have finished each day you will get a code word.

6. At the end of the week you will have 5 code words. Put them together and this will tell you where your school’s Maths Week treasure is.

Pythagoras in the famous painting by Rafael in 1509. Can you find him? Pythagoras. Everyone has heard of Pythagoras! He is the most famous of mathematicians. Pythagoras lived from 570 BC to 495 BC.

Pythagoras is famous for proving the theory which gives the algebra formula for finding the slant length of a right angled triangle.

The screen measurements of the new 6 SE iPhone are Length 3.48 inches. Width 1.96 inches.

The screen size is the slant length. a = √ (b2 + c2) a = √ (3.482 + 1.962) a = √ (12.1104 + 3.8416) a = √ (15.952) a = 3.99 The screen size is 3.99 inches which is very close to 4 inches.

The 6 SE iPhone is advertised as having a screen size of 4 inches. Task One. Calculate the screen size of last year’s Apple 6sPlus iPhone.

The screen measurements are Length 4.79 inches. Width 2.7 inches.

Task Two. Calculate the screen size of this 2015 Apple 6s iPhone.

The screen measurements are Length 4.1 inches. Width 2.3 inches.

Task Three. Calculate the screen size of this Apple iPhone 4 . This smartphone was available in 2010.

The screen measurements are Length 2.9 inches. Width 1.95 inches.

Task Four. Calculate the screen size of your phone or your parent’s phone. All screens are measured the same way. Use Pythagoras’s algebra formula to calculate the screen size.
