ABSTRACT: The marine environment of Pakistan has been described in the context of three main regions : the Indus delta and its creek system, the Karachi coastal region, and the Balochistan coast The creeks, contrary to concerns, do receive adequate discharges of freshwater. On site observations indicate that freshwater continues flowing into them during the lean water periods and dilutes the seawater there. A major factor for the loss of mangrove forests. as well as ecological disturbances in the Indus delta is loss of the silt load resulting in erosion of its mudflats. The ecological disturbance has been aggravated by allowing camels to browse the mangroves. The tree branches and trunks, having been denuded of leaves are felled for firewood. Evidence is presented to show that while indiscriminate removal of its mangrove trees is responsible for the loss oflarge tracts of mangrove forests, overharvesting of fisheries resources has depleted the river of some valuable fishes that were available from the delta area. Municipal and industrial effluents discharged into the Lyari and Malir rivers and responsible for land-based pollution at the Karachi coast and the harbour. The following are the three major areas receiving land-based pollution and whose environmental conditions have been examined in detail: (l) the Manora channel, located on the estuar}r of the Lyari river and serving as the main harbour, has vast areas forming its western and eastern backwaters characterized by mud flats and mangroves. -

Five years ago this was news, today it is shameful. It is a shame on those responsible for this ongoing pollution; the ship- ping industry. It is a shame on the international community that has so far refused to take any real measures to prevent the pollution and dangers. A huge but unknown quantity of toxic substances has been exported to Asia over the past five years in end-of-life ships. Six hundred such ships are broken annually with none ever being cleaned by the owner prior to export, and only very few being cleaned by their owner prior to breaking. More than 3,000 ships, and the toxic waste in the ships, have been exported over the last five years to Asian shipbreaking yards. -

Since then the Governing Council of UNEP has repeatedly endorsed a regional approach to the control of marine pollution and the ma-t of marine ad coastal resources ad has requested the develqmmt of re#ioml action plans. The Regional Seas Progr- at present includes ten mimyand has over 120 coastal States à participating in it. The action plans promote the parallel developmmt of regional legal agreemnts and of actioworimted pmgr- activitiesg- In Hay 1982 the UNEP Governing Council adopted decision 10/20 requesting the Executive Director of UNEP "to enter into consultations with the concerned States of the South Asia Co-operative Envirof~entProgran~e (SACEP) to ascertain their views regarding the conduct of a regional seas programe in the South Asian Seasm. In response to that request the Executive Director appointed a high level consultant to undertake a mission to the coastal States of SACW in October/November 1982 and February 1983. -

Being a developing country, Pakistan is striving to make developments in all the respective fields which alleviate our hot raising socio- economic issues. But beside the infrastructural and economic growth our environment is also getting polluted leaving behind several drastic and severe environmental crises and one of the adverse repercussions is environmental pollution. The extreme effects of environmental pollution cannot be neglected and through proper and genuine laws and policies implementations we can cope up such issues. This study reveals the history of environmental laws and policies and their implementations in Pakistan. Pakistan has a wide range of laws related to environment but the practice shows there is some problem which hinders to achieve the desired targets. This study mainly includes two main factors of pollution; water pollution and air pollution and their effects on population of Pakistan. Air pollution is top of the list for environmental protection agencies all over the world and same in Pakistan which is acting as a destructive bump for the economic growth of Pakistan. -

Gadani Ship-breaking Yard According to statistics released by environmental advocate, non-governmental agency Shipbreaking Platform, South Asian yards now offer about $450 per light displacement tonnage, or LDT, while Chinese yards offer only $210 and Turkish yards slightly better at $280 per LDT. It is also showed that a large container ship weighs in at almost 25,000 LDTs. That translates into $11.25 million in India, but only $7 million in Turkey and $5.25 million in China. Furthermore, Shipbreaking Platform releases a yearly survey on the industry. During 2017, the organization recorded, the industry internationally scrapped 835 ships, which totalled 20.7 million gross tons. That’s a substantial fall from 2016, when 27.4 million tons were scrapped. The number of scrapped ships has declined by greater than 30 percent from the boom days of 2012 to 2013. According to Mulinaris’s research, during 2017, saw the demolition of 170 bulk carriers, 180 general cargo ships, 140 containers, 140 tankers, 20 vehicle carriers, 14 passenger ships and 30-40 oil and gas related units, which include platforms and drill ships. The research also mentioned that most decline into the category of small and medium-sized ships, ranging from less than 500 gross tons to 25,000 gross tons. Another study which was compiled by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the agency has forecast the acceleration of global ship breaking, notably oil tankers and container ships, from now on, but particularly from 2020 until 2023. This reflects the scrapping of ships built during the later half of the 1990s, with a useful life of 26 or 27 years. -

The Met office has said that weather remained cold and dry in most parts of the country on Sunday. Dense fog prevailed over plain areas of Punjab and Sukkur division. Dense fog is likely to occur in plain areas of Punjab and upper Sindh during the night and morning hours on Monday. As the blanket of fog disrupted normal traffic on motorways and national highways in Punjab and Sukkur division it also disrupted flight and train schedule due to poor visibility. With regard to synoptic situation the Met office said that a westerly wave is likely to enter western parts of the country tonight and likely to grip upper parts on Monday. It may persist over northern areas till Tuesday. Predicting rain/snowfall on Monday and Tuesday, it said rain/thunderstorm is expected at scattered places in Malakand, Hazara, Mardan, Quetta, and Zhob divisions, Fata, Gilgit Baltistan and Kashmir while at isolated places in Bannu, Peshawar, Kohat, Kalat, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sargodha divisions and Islamabad on Monday/Tuesday.
