On World Day for Safety and Health at Work, the company confirms its commitment to prevention and training its employees

Canal de Isabel II installs defibrillators in around thirty work centres and public spaces • Two new defibrillators will be soon be installed in the company’s parks in Islas Filipinas and Plaza Castilla • Canal is ahead of the mandatory deadlines, which establish that these devices must be installed in centres with over 250 employees • The devices treat victims of sudden cardiac arrest, they provide instructions and are in contact with the 112 emergency service

28APR18 – Canal de Isabel II has installed defibrillators in 28 of the company’s work centres, distributed across the Community of . By doing so, the company is ahead of the regional decree published in September 2017, establishing that these devices must be installed in work centres with over 250 employees before next September.

Furthermore, Canal de Isabel II has gone one step further, not only in terms of deadlines, but also in terms of scope, since a large number of the devices have been installed in work centres with fewer employees than the figure established by the decree: the number of employees, the distance from hospitals, outpatient clinics and other health facilities have also been taken into account.

Defibrillators are automatic devices that monitor and analyse a patient’s heart rhythm, they identify if there are any anomalies with the heart rhythm that can be treated via an electric current and, if so, they provide it in accordance with the situation, enabling the heart to recover its normal rhythm. Using voice prompts and lights, these devices give simple verbal instructions to users and, maintain a telephone connection with the 112 Emergency Services for the .

Until now, Canal de Isabel II already had these types of machines and various portable ones. With the new initiative, a total of 27 machines have been installed: 7 in waste water treatment plants, 10 in water treatment plants, one in the Control Centre and nine more in a number of the company’s work centres in Madrid capital, , , and .

installed in the Third Deposit (in Avenida de Islas Filipinas) and the Fourth Deposit (in Plaza de Castilla), the latter ones are for public use in the event of a health emergency.

Together with the installation of these devices, the company has trained four employees from each work centre so they can use the defibrillators correctly and so they know how to act in the event of a health emergency of this sort.

STRATEGIC COMMITMENT TO THE SAFETY OF ITS 2500 PROFESSIONALS

The installation of defibrillator devices forms part of the one of the 10 lines included in the 2018-2030 Strategic Plan, the aim of which is to promote talent, commitment and the health of Canal’s 2,500 professionals and its initiatives include a plan to guarantee a safe environment for all employees.

Therefore, as part of this plan, strategic actions will be taken to continuously reduce occupational accidents and incidents, a “zero incident” culture will be implemented and work will be carried out to constantly improve the safety of all its collaborating companies.

28 APRIL: WORLD DAY FOR SAFETY AND HEALTH AT WORK

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) is a United Nation agency specialising in dealing with labour issues and labour relations. Since 2003, on 28 April of each year, the World Day for Safety and Health at Work is held, with the aim of promoting the prevention of labour accidents and professional illnesses worldwide.

It is an awareness campaign, which focuses international attention on the scope of the problem and on how creating and promoting a culture of safety and health can help to reduce the number of work-related injuries and deaths.
