It is also reported that the area did not suit them and both couples returned to Alabama and/or Georgia.

Some of the party can be found in the 1860 US Census; William (without a spouse) living in Cusseta, Georgia and Lucy re-married and living with Moses Mays in Lee County, Alabama. It appears that the Baugh siblings have both expired by 1860. We find the grave of Mary Baugh Smith in the Cusseta, Alabama cemetery with a death date of 22 Nov 1854. We also find a grave of one Peter Baugh in Harrison County, Texas with a death date of 11 Jan 1857. Enlisted February 21, 1862 in Montgomery by Capt. Powell. From August 1862 to March 1863 he acted as Chief of the Signal Corps attached to Gen. Stevenson's Division of the Army of Mississippi. Notes for Elmore W. Culp: ELMORE W. CULP. (From "Centennial history of Arkansas)

No history of El Dorado would be complete without extended reference to Elmore W. Culp so closely and prominently was he associated with the material progress, the Intellectual upbuilding and the moral development and advancement of the city. He was long an outstanding figure in business circles by reason of the fact that he was one of the founders and promoters of the Arkansas Wholesale Grocery Company. His birth occurred in Salem, Lee county, Alabama, January 26, 1862, his pyGeneration 6 (con't) y y parents being William B. and Nancy Olivia (Murphy) Culp. The father was born in the Asheville district of North Carolina, while the mother's birth occurred in the Spartanburg district of South Carolina. The grandfather in the paternal line was Dr. William A. Culp, a practicing physician, while William B. Culp, father of Elmore W. Culp, was for many years one of the prominent lawyers of Montgomery, Alabama. He died, however, in 1864, during the progress of the Civil war, of wounds sustained on the battle fields while aid- ing the Confederacy. Like most of the prominent southern families the Gulps lost their fortunes in the struggle and William B. Culp thus left the members of his household without financial resources. His widow and their three children returned to the old home of her father. Captain Thomas F. Murphy, and there the children were reared to adult age. The daughter, who was the eldest of the three children, married a station agent and telegraph operator, who taught telegraphy to Elmore W. Culp when he was but a mere boy. While he was but twelve years of age, a barefoot boy, having had but limited advantages, he was left to take charge of the office while his brother-in-law went on a vacation. He acquitted himself splendidly in the discharge of the heavy responsibilities which devolved upon him in this connection and when he had completed his apprenticeship in the study of telegraphy he was given an office and rose to the important position of train master.

In 1891 Mr. Culp came to El Dorado on the first official train that made its way into the town following the completion of the Camden & Alexandria Railroad between Camden and El Dorado, now a part of the Iron Mountain system. He was placed in charge of the station here and remained in the position for eleven years. He was a most capable, courteous and obliging official and no one that has occupied the position has ever been more popular with the patrons of the office. In 1902 he resigned on account of failing health and in the same year, in company with R. A. Faulkner, he engaged in the wholesale feed, grain and heavy groceries business. Some time afterward Mr. Faulkner sold his interest to the Ritchie Grocery Company of Camden and for three years Mr. Culp was associated with the Ritchie Grocery interests, also retaining his connection with the El Dorado business. He then sold out and with three others, Ocie Nelms, now deceased, L. L. DeCou and W. E. McRae, established the Arkansas Wholesale Grocery Company of El Dorado. Of this company Ocle Nelms was made president with Mr. Culp as general manager. Mr. Nelms died in November, 1913, and Mr. Gulp succeeded him in the presidency, in which capacity he continued to serve to the time of his death two years later. He was a man of unquestioned integrity and enterprise in business affairs, sound and deliberate in his judgment, and actuated at all times by a most progressive spirit. He put forth every effort to please his patrons, recognizing that the good word of a customer is the best possible advertisement. Moreover, the integrity of his business methods was never called into ques- tion and all who knew him recognized the fact that his prosperity came from close application, indefatigable energy, thorough reliability and up-to-date business methods.

On the 21st of November, 1888, Mr. Culp was married to Miss Helen Preston Nelms, of Salem, Alabama, the daughter of John I. Nelms, who was a well known planter of the Salem district. Mr. and Mrs. Culp became parents of four children, of whom three are living: Lide C, who is employed by the Arkansas Grocery Company; John E., the president of the Arkansas Wholesale Grocery Company; Carrie, now deceased; and Erin H., at home.

Mr. Culp was a faithful follower of Masonic teachings and also belonged to the Knights of Pythias. He was active in civic affairs and for some years served as a member of the city council. He held membership in the Baptist church ;in(l served as one of the deacons. He contributed generously to the support of the church and did everything in his power to advance its growth and extend its influence. His Generation 6 (con't) opinions were highly regarded in the councils of the church and in relation to public affairs as well. He was a man of kindly, genial nature and generous disposition, who gave freely toward ameliorating the hardships of life for the unfortunate. While a most prominent merchant and business man he was also closely associated with the moral and spiritual uplift of El Dorado and he left the impress of his influence for good upon all with -whom he came in contact.

40. JUDITH B6 CULP (Cynthia W.5 Smith, Judith B4 Heard, Jesse Faulkner3 Heard, Stephen2 Heard, Charles1 Heard) was born in 1835 in South Carolina. She died on 19 Jul 1870 in Henry County, Alabama. She married Isidor Mendheim, son of Prussian Mendheim and Marianne Mendheim on 24 Dec 1851 in Harris, Georgia. He was born about 1825 in Cüstrin, Prussia. He died on 20 Jan 1891 in Dothan, Henry County, Alabama.

Notes for Judith B Culp: Judith was born in 1836 in South Carolina. She married Isidor Mendheim on December 24, 1851 in Harris County, Georgia (the same county where her parents were married 23 years earlier). Judith and Isidor moved to Henry, County Alabama and had five children between 1853 and 1864. Judith died at a young age (33) in 1870 from unknown causes.

From the Henry County Register (Abbeville, Alabama Weekly Newspaper), Friday, July 23, 1870

'DEATH - Near this place on Monday morning last, at 5 o'clock, Mrs. Judith B., wife of Dr. I. Mendheim, in the 33rd year of her age.'

Notes for Isidor Mendheim: We are confident Isidor arrived on on the Howard October 14, 1841 but, the first reference to Isidor we have found in the United States is an ad placed in the Augusta Chronical in November 1841. Benjamin and Isidor placed an ad in the Augusta Chronical looking for their brother Ernest (Emil) who was reported to have been living in the area in 1840-1841. Isidor married Judith Culp on Christmas eve 1851 in Harris County GA. The record was transcribed as:

"Mendkins, (?) Isador Judith Culp 12/24/1851"

Apparently Isidor and Judith moved relatively quickly to Henry County, Alabama as their first born William P. Mendheim was born in 1853 in Alabama. Isidor and Judith went on to have five (5) children: William, Rozelia (married William Kirkland), Isidore W., Albert and Belton. The 1860 Federal Census shows Isidor (now a dentist) with wife Judith and four children; William age 7, Rozelia age 5, Isidor (IW) age 3 and Albert age 1 living in Henry County, Alabama. Judith's brother Henry B. Culp, age 16, was at their home.

Isidor signed up for the CSA's Alabama 37th Volunteer Regiment at Auburn, Alabama on March 22, 1862. He was part of Company A that was nicknamed the "Henry Volunteers" as many of the men in Company A were from Henry County. Isidor was discharged on August 6, 1862 in Columbus, Mississippi due to medical reasons. It states that he had Rheumatism and had not been of service for the previous 60 days. The description of Isidor by the discharging officer stated "He was born in Prussia in the State of_ _is 37 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, light hair, and by occupation, when enlisted, a dentist." Further it states, "I certify that I have carefully examined the said Isidore Mindheim of Captain Green's Company and find him incapable of performing the duties of a soldier because of Rheumatism - He has not done any service three months. I recommend his discharge."" His second wife, Nancy Jane Mathews Mendheim, subsequently received a pension as a result of Isidor's service to the Confederate States of America. Generation 6 (con't) Judith died on July 19, 1870 at 33 years of age of unknown causes. Judith was not present for the 1870 census (Henry County, Alabama) but William's future wife, Minerva Roberts, and a couple of workers were there with the rest of the family. After Judith's death Isidor married Nance Jane Mathews. A reference of his marriage to Nancy Jane was published in 1873, which stated:

'MARRIED - A short time since, our genial friend Dr. I. Mendheim, suddenly disappeared from our quite little town, and we had just began to wouder what had become of him when he returned, looking so well he hardly resembled himself. And he did not return alone, but brought with him a yonng and blushing bride that he captured over about Clopton. Well, Doctor, we wish you much joy; may you and the wife live long and prosper, and may - and may - well, never mind.' - Henry County Register (Abbeville, Alabama Weekly Newspaper) Friday, February 14, 1873

In approximately 1880 Isidor, Nancy and their children apparently moved to Walton County, Florida for a brief period of time. Isidor and Nancy are listed in the 1880 Federal Census of both Houston County, Alabama (with Isidor and Judith's children as well as William's children) and Walton County, Florida (with Isidor and Nancy's children). Isidor and Nancy had six (6) children: Hortense, Herman, Gillispe, Irene, Karl and Colo.

Isidor, along with William P., William J. Kirkland (Rosa's husband), IW (Isidore White) and Albert filed for homestead property. Isidor filed for property located in what is now Dothan, Alabama and received the title in 1891. Mr. Kirkland filed for property adjacent to Isidor while IW filed for property close by in Dothan. William filed in Geneva County, Alabama, and Albert filed in Holmes County, Florida.

In 1887 Isidor and Nancy were two of the nine founding members of the First Baptist Church of Dothan, Alabama.

In 1891a reference to Isidor's death was written in a local Dothan Alabama newspaper stating:

'Death: Dr. I. Mendheim passed quietly away at his home one mile south of Dothan on last Tuesday morning. We do not know his exact age, but he was one of the oldest citizens of this country, and almost every body knew him. He was for a long time a successful Dentist at Abbeville. A few years ago when his manhood had withered away, he moved to the "piney woods" and settled on a little farm near here before Dothan was known. He has for the past few years been an object of pity, and to see him staggering about the streets, jerking with old age, and drawn over, would attract the sympathy and draw tears from anyone. He was a consistent member of the Baptist Church and loved his God. He was known by hundreds of people all over this country who will remember how he looked in his declining years. He has been known as "old Doctor Mendheim" for the last 25 years or longer. Such was his title before the writer outgrew the swaddling clothes of an infant. But, alas! 'tis done! And Dr. Mendheim is no more-no more on earth. May he rest with Jesus, and never know sorrow again, are the wishes that a thousand souls will join the Siftings in making today. He died poor in worldly goods, but the true riches are yet to come, and the day of his life has just begun to dawn, for "to live in Christ, and die, is gain".' - Wire-Grass Siftings (Dothan, Alabama Weekly Newspaper) Thursday, January 22, 1891

Isidor Mendheim and Judith B Culp had the following children: i. WILLIAM P.7 MENDHEIM was born in 1853 in Henry County, Alabama. He died about 1890 in Geneva County, Alabama. He married (1) MINERVA ROBERTS, daughter of Mr Roberts on 19 Mar 1874 in Santa Rosa County, Florida. She was born about 1852 in Georgia. She died about 1879 in Henry County, Alabama. He married (2) SARAH LOUISA ELIZABETH GRANTHAM, daughter of Washington Jackson Grantham and Elvy E Stone between 1880-1885. She was born on 22 Nov 1861 in Macon County, Georgia. She died on 23 Jul 1926 in Geneva County, Alabama.

Notes for William P. Mendheim: William was born in 1853 in Henry County, Alabama. William is listed in the 1870 census of Henry County, Alabama (along with Isidor's other children at the time) as Generation 6 (con't) is Minerva Roberts, his future wife. William and Minerva were married in Santa Rosa County, Florida on March 19, 1874. William and Minerva had four (4) children: Edward, Ella, Oscar and Henry.

Minerva apparently died within a year of delivering their youngest child Henry (possibly while giving birth). Henry was born in March 1879 and by the 1880 Henry County, Alabama census, William along with three of his children (Ed, Ella and Oscar) were living with Isidor. William is listed as a widower and Henry had been adopted by the C.S. Kincey family. Sometime after 1880 and before 1990 Ed went out on his own; it is reported that Ella died; and Oscar was "taken in" by the William McKissick family.

William applied for a homestead in Geneva County, Alabama on January 17, 1889 stating he took possession of the property in 1885. On March 14, 1891 Sarah L E Mendheim ("widow of William P Mendheim") filed final papers for the homestead claim and the "homestead patent" was issued January 18, 1892. The property was located in High Falls, Geneva County, Alabama. Ed (Charles Edward) and his family lived in Geneva county close to, if not on, the homestead property.

Notes for Belton Mendheim: 1880 Census list Belton's occupation as "mail carrier" (age 16).

The Eufula bulletin says - A son of Dr. Mendheim carries the S.S. Mail on his shoulders, from Abbeville, Henry County, to Shorterville, a distance of ten miles and back, three times a week, and also carries it three times a week from Abbeville to Clopton, Dale County, a distance of twelve miles. He utterly distains the use of a horse, saying that he can beat a horse traveling all hollow. - Henry County Register (Abbeville, Alabama Weekly Newspaper) Friday, May 27, 1881

According to the article below Belton died in Dothan, Alabama in June, 1919 Published in Holmes County Advertiser, Bonifay, Florida - Friday, July 4, 1919 Weekly News Letter From Busy Noma: "Uncle Belt Mendheim died in the Dothan Infirmary the last month."
