The Ram WITH THE Advanced camp 1978: fun in the sun'

Advanced Camp.held each year at Fort Bragg.North Carolina, is the big event all advanced course cadets participate in during the summer between their junior and senior year at college. There at Bragg they meet, live and work with First Region Cadets from the Atlantic seaboard states.

Advanced Camp provides all with fantastic opportunities to develop their leadership ability and learn about today's modern Army. "Hands-on" training is stressed throughout the camp, and this allows cadets to fire, operate and man many of the weapons and much of the equipment available to the U.S. soldier. \

Advanced Camp will challenge you. It will test your strength, your stamina and your ability to react quickly as a leader. If you have any doubts about this, ask any Fordham cadet about RECONDO training.

Most of all it is the people you will meet from schools all over the region that will have the greatest affect on you. The friends you meet and the people you will work with will remain with you for a lifetime. The Ball

On March 10th, the cadre and cadets got a chance to show off some /ancy footwork at the 34th Annual Military Ball. The Ball, which was held this year at the Rye Country Club, is the most enjoyable of the social activities sponsored by the Reserve Officers Training Corps.

Though the Military Ball is probably the biggest and swankiest event of the year, let it be known that it is certainly not the only social event of the year. The Corps of Cadets sponsors social get-togethers of all kinds throughout the year - mixers, beer jests and, last but certainly not least, an annual costume party at Halloween which certainly brings out the best in all.

Adventure Weekend

The first really big event on the Fordham ROTC calendar Is the Adventure Weekend, conducted each year at the end of September. Held up in the pictaresque, rolling hills of the West Point Military Reservation, this outing is meant to introduce incoming and interested college freshman to ROTC personnel and the program we run here at Fordham.

All the activities are conducted outdoors in the fresh air. On the left, you can see one of our braver Junior cadets rappellng off the West Point cliffs.

On Thursday 6 April, 1978, the Fordham ROTC Battalion packed up and headed south for the annual Field Leadership Exercise [FLX\ at Fort Dix, New Jersey.

These cadets returned to New York City three days later after a long weekend oj weapons training, PT , CLASSES AND PRACTICAL LEADERSHIP EXERCISES.

The Fort Dix FLX is the biggest event on the spring calendar of events. Living in a garrison for three days, cadets get an opportunity to taste Army life and receive intensive training in a military environment. In spite of the hard work, however, the mess hall chow and fresh air always seem to bring out the best in people. Laughter Athletic Day and good times are always the main ingredients of the Fort Dix FLX.

On some Sunday afternoon you could go into the field house in Lombardl Center and see the Fordham cadets hard at play. Athletic competition plays a part in the program at Fordham University and the annual ATHLETIC DAY provides the opportunity for a large group to get together and compete on squad and platoon level.

Take your pick: basketball, volley ball, swimming, indoor track compe- tition. ROTC offers the opportunity.

Basic Camp was held this past summer at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and it provided the Corps of Cadets at fordham with three MS III (Junior year at College) cadets ready to enter the advanced program.

Basic Camp at Fort Knox provides college students from around the country, with a special option, with regard to commissioning. If you choose to spend only two years with ROTC, you may attend Basic Camp after your Sophomore year at college, and return in Fall as a senior NCO cadet in the Advanced Course.

Basic Camp will introduce you to aspects of Army life and familiarize you with basic skills you will need as a leader in the ROTC program. Paged

If you're really physically fit and have a'desire for a real challenge, you may qualify for Airborne training down at Fort Benning, Georgia. There, you'll experience three tough weeks of training which will test your strength and stamina. What follows is a personal account of the experiences of one of Fordham's recent graduates of the Airborne School at Fort Benning.

,' • Can you fill the boots of a U.S. paratrooper? My thoughts were interrupted by the jump-master giving his first command, "Six minutes!" We nudge each other to assure that everyone is awake. The next command follows quickly, "Get ready!" We all respond with a thunderous "AIRBORNE!" There was an awaful feeling in my stomach. "First pass personnel, stand up!" I stood up and faced the rear of

the aircraft. The jump-master continued, "Hook-up!" My throat ran dry as I hooked my static line to the cable. The jump-master continued the commands: "Check static line!" "Check equipment!" "Sound off for equipment check!" Once the jump-master received the "All OK" he opened the jump doors. From the open doors 1 could see the ground below. I could hear my breathing quicken. The red light was on. Every part of me was tense, on edge. "Thirty seconds!" My breathing seems as loud as the aircraft engines, my heart was pounding so I thought it wdbid rip through my uniform and harness. "Stand in the door!" This is It! The light turned from red to green, "GO!, GO!, GO!" A hard slap on my backside sent me out the aircraft door.

The wind was tremendous. I came into the proper body position as I watched the aircraft pass by me. I heard some idiot shouting, "One-thou- sand, two-thousand, three-thousand, four-thousand." Only later did I realize that idiot was me. 1 felt a tug and looked up to see my canopy fully inflated. 1 breathed a sigh of relief as 1 looked around. The ground seemed far away but was definitely getting closer as 1 prepared to land. 1 hit the ground at 14 MPH and executed a parachute landing fall. I could feel a smile come across my face. 1 had just made my first jump and all my bones were in the same place. 1 gathered my equipment as another C-130 passed over my head. I •••*•*•••*••••*••**•*• had four more jumps to make that week, but none would be like my first jump. AIRBORNE!

We were all aboard the C-130 troop transport as it taxied down the runway. There were nervous smiles, laughter, tense looks. Some of us just THOMAS P. GW1AZD0WSK1 stared at nothing, deep in thought. In minutes we would be stepping off the aircraft. There was just one catch, the plane would be 1250 feet over Fryar Drop Zone, Alabama, travelling over 150 miles an hour. In minutes, we would all be making our "first jump." ****•••*•••••**••*••• Acres Of Improved Grass, Flowers

The gardens contain, naturally, flowers, ferns, and trees; some of which will be in bloom until the first frost of winter. The Enid A. Haupt Conservatory is a city landmark first opened in 1901 which has recently been totally restored to its original elegance and reopened In March, 1978. its 11 large galleries, including a centra] palm court with a 90-foot dome, display a wide variety of plant environments; a palm grove, fern jungle, Old World and New World deserts, an orange- rie, a collection of plants important for their economic uses, and tunnel filled with plants that thrive in sub- dued light. The one-acre glass-enclosed space is also used for seasonal displays of flowering plants such as lilies, orchids, rhododendrons and poinsettias. One two-story wing of the Conservatory is set aside as a "Greenworld for Children," a specially equipped edu- cational facility where children can learn important lessons from plants. ? The museum building contains the library, as well as the Shop-in-the-Garden, where plants and posters can be bought at prices well below commercial prices. The grounds are open daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the summer, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the winter. The main entrance is across from the Univer- sity's "A" lot, but is closed for extensive renovation. The easiest way for Fordhamites to enter the Gardens is by the Zoo Gate, which is located on Fordham Road, directly across from the entrance to the zoo, or by the Mosholu Gate which is located on the Southern w Boulevard extension between Bedford Park Boule- *vard and the Mosholu Parkway. Admission is free. The conservatory is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
