Music lovers have lots to choose from, including the renowned violin masters Dr M. Lalitha and M. Nandini or the rousing military bands from around the world at the annual tattoo. This is first class action entertainment for the whole family. Tickets are on sale and can be bought here FESTIVALS Chamber Music Festival – Fagerborgfestspillene 18th to 21st April Fagerborgfestspillene is an annual chamber music festival created and organised by young musicians at Barratt Due Music Institute, with the aim of presenting classical music in new ways. The concerts take place at different venues around Oslo. For detailed program and information about tickets see the festivals’ website. (In Norwegian) Photo: VisitOslo.com Oslo Open Art Festival 21st – 22nd April How does an artist work? What is an artist studio? Do you want to build your own art collection? During this weekend the artists of Oslo offer an opportunity to step inside their studios and have a glimpse of the place where art is created. Oslo Open is the largest art festival in Norway and gives the public the opportunity to see art before it gets to the museum or gallery. During the festival 350-400 of Oslo artists open their doors to the public. There are also children’s workshops and guided tours. The festival is free of charge. The gallery has collected works by Murakami for several years and has curated a solo exhibition based on a wide selection of graphic works by this artist. The exhibition contains 50 works from the last five years. Free entrance Address: Filipstad brygge 2 Photo: VisitOslo.com CONCERTS A musical tribute to the story of Akershus Fortress Akershus fortress, 19th April at 21:00 The tribute is a place-specific piece, modernised and dedicated to the fortress of Akershus. It is about newer Norwegian history, mobilisation, invasion and war. And not least, about the thousands of housewives who waited at home not knowing if they would see their men and family members again. The concert is free of charge. Address: Akershus festning Photo: VisitOslo.com Palmarejo aid concert: Valkyrien Kampen Bistro, 19th April at 20:00 Aid concert for the Palmarejo Project, which supports a local school for stateless children in the Dominican Republic. The project is ten this year and celebrates with a concert with the band Valkyrien. Valkyrien (formerly Valkyrien Allstars) has become an attraction across the globe. Since their debut in 2005, the band has continued to develop and refine its unique sound, thus renewing Norwegian traditional music. All proceeds go towards the shool project in Palmarejo. Photo: VisitOslo.com Address: Bøgata 21 Michael McDermott Café Mono, 19th April at 21:00 In the early 90's Michael McDermott was hailed as the new Dylan, Springsteen or Tom Waits. His self-destructive lifestyle, however, made sure that his career had an abrupt stop. Skip forward to today and McDermott has put old problems behind him and made a grand comeback in the American folk music landscape. His new album is called Out from Under. Click here for tickets. Address: Pløens gate 4 Photo: VisitOslo.com Norwegian Soloists' Choir and Barokkanerne - Hamburg 1786 Universitetes Aula, 20th April at 19:00 The Norwegian Soloists' Choir and Barokkanerne Baroque Orchestra present a reconstruction of the concert where C. Ph. E. Bach premiered his Magnficat in Hamburg i 1786. The ensembles will also perform excerpts from J. S. Bach's Mass in B minor and H-moll and G. F. Handel’s Messiah. Nandini have been celebrated as pioneers in their generation. These enchanting musicians have delighted audiences with their music and are said to be the only female Asian duo that play the merger between classical South Indian and Western classical music. Here we have an instinctive flair. The sisters are fourth generation musicians, so you can safely say that this is in the genes, which is again topped with an over 20 years of professional career. Address: Brenneriveien 9c Photo: cafeoto.co.uk Jazzmeia Horn Victoria, Nasjonal jazzscene, 20th April at 21:00 The up and coming American vocalist Jazzmeia Horn is inspired by everything from Erykah Badu to the most spiritual of 60s soul, but her voice – which carries in it both swinging authority and blue, raw emotions – is genuine classic jazz. Her album ‘A social call’ was released last year and shows a young artist who already is in full control and who is looking at a bright future. Music can work as a time machine – Jazzmeia Horn takes you back to the good old times. Click here for tickets. Traditional dance tunes like schottis, bourée and farandole are performed on bagpipe and banjo, which in turn melt together with the tones from a specially built hurdy gurdy, electronic rhythms and samples. The result is an unstoppable dance mix which has captivated audiences all across Europe. Address: Schous Kulturbryggeri, Trondheimsveien 2 Saturday opera: Vienna and waltzes Gamle Raadhus Scene, 21st April at 15:30 The programme this afternoon consists of 20th century music, with Vienna as a focal point. The performers bring you back to dim-lit cabaret stages, grand ballrooms and up above the rooftops and into nature. Performers will be: Ingrid Vetlesen – soprano, Silje Bugjerde Bagge – violin and Marita Kjetland Rabben – piano. It is recommended to buy tickets in advance. Address: Christiania torv 1 Baby Dee Café Mir, 21st April at 21:00 One of the industry's most flamboyant musical discoveries of the last decade, Baby Dee is an enchanting songwriter, classically trained harpist, circus sideshow veteran, and transgender street legend. Her infectious cackle and extraordinary talent on the piano, harp, and accordion has caught her many musical admirers including Will Oldham, Matt Sweeney, Maxim Moston, and Andrew WK, all of whom have produced unique and magnificent albums for her. The band formed in 1983 and released their self-titled album the same year. Their breakthrough came with 1985’s grandiose rock-epos This is The Sea. Their latest album, Modern Blues, sees the band move more towards a roots-based, funky direction.
