As an All-State halfback, he led East to the 1949 state football championship. He also won the 120 high hurdles in 14.6 seconds, a state record at the time. Ronald served in the United States Navy and then played football at Purdue University for one year. He went on to teach and coach football, track and wrestling at the high school level. Doug McEnulty – Class of 1939 Doug played football, basketball, and won the state championship in the discus while at East. He was a letterman at Wichita University and played for the Wichita Aero Commandos semi-pro football team. Doug went on to play for George Halas and the Chicago Bears in 1943-44, winning an NFL championship in 1943. Ira Smith – Class of 1924 Ira played baseball, football and basketball while at East (Wichita High School). He went on to play professional baseball for 15 years, 10 of them in the Redlegs and Cardinals systems. He also managed professional teams in New York, Houston, Sacramento and Birmingham. He also managed and pitched in the National Baseball Congress games as a member of Boeing Bombers teams. Ira is also a Kansas Baseball Hall of Fame inductee. Return to top Class of 2020 Inductees Tony Anderson – Class of 1968 Tony had the greatest all-round single football season in East history. In 1967, he was #1 in City League rushing, #1 in City League receiving and #1 in City League scoring with 93 points. He was a unanimous All-City and All-State football selection. Tony was also a sprinter on the 1967 East state championship track team. Jim Barger – 1958-1967 Coach Barger ranks in the top five of the winningest football coaches in City League history. While at East, Coach Barger’s teams won four City League championships in 1958, 1959, 1961 and 1967. Marcie Borchard – Class of 1983 Marcie became the first All-City softball player in East history in 1982, after the first five years of City League softball having no East players on the All-City teams. A hard-hitting outfielder, she led the way for future East softball players. Jerry Gardner – Class of 1958 Jerry was a leading scorer in basketball at East in the 1950’s, averaging 21.5 points his senior year. He led East to a third place state championship finish in 1958. He was also a state champion in the long jump. Jerry is currently the fifty-third leading scorer in KU basketball history, scoring 1,030 points from 1960-62. Jake Spitz – Class of 2013 Jake is a four-time state swimming champion, a sixteen-time City League swimming champion and an All-American in the 100 butterfly. Jake also was captain of the East state champion swim team. Return to top Class of 2019 Inductees Arthur Brown – Class of 2008 As a sophomore and junior, Arthur was a consensus First team Class 6A All-State selection and as a senior, he was named to the Second Eleven All-State team. At K-State, he won the 2012 Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Arthur also spent four seasons in the NFL. Bryce Brown – Class of 2009 Bryce played running back for East from 2005 to 2008. With over 6,000 yards rushing, he is the best back in the history of the Wichita City League. As a four-time All-City back and numerous All-State awards, Bryce went on to play in the NFL. Cheryl Dickerson – Class of 1982 Sharing the title of East’s first two-time All-City girls’ basketball player in the same years of 1981 and 1982 with East Hall of Fame inductee Kym Carter, Cheryl led her team to an overall record of 41 wins and 3 losses and a third place finish in the state championship in 1982. Cheryl went on to play basketball at Barton County Community College and University of Dayton. J.D. Edmiston – 1955-1980 Coach Edmiston was one of several great track and field coaches that East has been fortunate enough to have. He had many state champions throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s while at East. The J.D. Edmiston Track and Field Scholarship Fund was established after Coach Edmiston passed away in 2008. Greg Esaw – Class of 1968 After playing his last game as an Ace over 50 years ago, Greg is still East’s best single season quarterback with 1,211 yards on 80 of 163 attempts and 13 touchdowns. Named All-City and Second team All-State, he led East to an undefeated City League title. Greg also played baseball at East and went on to play baseball in college. Ken Thiessen – 2003-2018 Mr. Thiessen began his career as a teacher in the Wichita Public Schools In 1981. He started working at East in 1992 as an assistant principal and named principal in 2003. He served in that capacity until retiring in 2018. He helped co-found the East High Hall of Fame in 2004, served on the Kansas High School Activities Association Board of Directors, and was the President of the Executive Board In 2014. During his tenure as principal, he was very supportive of all extra-curricular activities and promoted the rich traditions that the school is known for; a few of these are awarding Spirit Sticks, attempting to control the Hecklers, and jumping into the pool after swimming championships. East is the home of the Blue Aces and the acquisition of the biplane that hangs in the gym foyer was also a project led under Mr. Thiessen’s leadership. Return to top Class of 2018 Inductees Mike Anderson – 1981-2007 Mike Anderson started the boys’ soccer program at East in 1981, along with taking over the girls’ program in 1989, a year after it started. He coached until 2007 before passing away from cancer. Coach Anderson is considered one of the pioneers of high school soccer in Wichita. He led the boys’ program to 3 regional titles and the girls’ program to 5 regional titles along with a 3rd place state finish in 1998. In his 26 years at East, he coached hundreds of soccer players and also encouraged academic success. Although stern in his actions as a coach, he cared for all of his players as if they were his own. Michael Draut – 1999-2016 Michael is a former athlete and coach of East High cross country and track. While an athlete at East from 1975-1978, he was a 3 year letter winner in both track and cross country. Michael became an assistant coach at East in 1999. He was the head coach from 2003 to 2016.

  • Destination of 2019 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Transfers
    DESTINATION OF 2019 NCAA DIVISION I MEN’S BASKETBALL TRANSFERS January 2020 Summary of Findings Although the Division I Transfer Portal opened in October 2018, there was no substantial change in the number of transfers in Division I men’s basketball from 2018 to 2019. Consistent with the past four years of transfer data, about half of men’s basketball transfers remain in Division I, while a quarter transfer to Division II and a quarter transfer out of the NCAA (NAIA, NJCAA, etc.). Fewer than 1 in 10 are “up transfers” (transferring to a more prestigious program), while about 30% are “lateral transfers” and 60% are “down transfers.” This pattern has remained consistent over time. Of those men’s basketball transfers remaining in Division I, nearly one third are so-called “graduate transfers.” This percentage has remained relatively consistent over the past four years. Graduate transfers are more likely to “up transfer” than undergraduate transfers in men’s basketball. Identifying 2019 Transfers in Division I Men’s Basketball Transfers were identified by merging the 2019 Division I Basketball Transfers list from the Verbal Commits website (downloaded Sept. 15, 2019) with all Division I men’s basketball student-athletes listed in the 2018-19 Transfer Portal. List destination accuracy was determined primarily through: The “matriculated” institution listed in the student’s status field in the Transfer Portal. 2019-20 men’s basketball roster of destination institution and/or student-athlete bio. It’s our sixth year of operation and it looks like our theme for the year will be growth. In March, the Pentagon hosted 59 postseason college basketball games. Among those were three national championships – the fi rst ever combined NCAA Division II men’s and women’s Elite Eight, as well as the NAIA Division II men’s championship. The NAIA then honored the Sanford Sports Complex with its annual Best NAIA Championship Venue Award. The award is a testament to the facility and our incredible sta that make it come to life. This spring ushered in several big announcements about new additions coming to the Complex. The Summit League announced the relocation of its headquarters to Sioux Falls, a more centralized location within the organization’s footprint. We are proud to welcome them to Sioux Falls. Will’s Training Table is undergoing an extensive remodel this year. When it reopens in February the destination restaurant and bar will have more than doubled in size. The Complex is a hub of activity, and that will only continue with the addition of a 180,000-square-foot Mills Fleet Farm store and Great Shots, a new golf entertainment facility.

    Coaching Retreat Notes Calapari / Larry Brown 2007 In Tunica Mississippi Larry Eustachy: THOUGHTS ON THE PROFESSION: • The hardest part of not having a coaching job is the Unknown. • If you coach long enough, you will: win the league, finish in last place, get a better job, and get fired. • "I forgot where I came from, and wanted to re-live a collegiate lifestyle as a coach." Coaches need to be able to handle success. Has a lot of admiration for Jay Wright and they way he remained the same during his ascension in the coaching profession. COMPONANTS OF HIS COACHING METHODOLOGY: • Use breakdown chart to grade player performance in practice and games. Got the chart from Rick Majerus – his team's are traditionally the best prepared in the game. • Chart example – When a shot goes up: 3,4,5, to O-Boards with "Reckless Abandon" and the 1&2 get back on defense. The staff utilizes game film to calculate scores for each player. • Charting helps to truly hold players accountable for the things you are demanding that they do • The chart doesn't lie. A player with less breakdowns that minutes played has inevitably played very well. • You must teach your players learn to "think while they are playing" and take pride in being held accountable for their responsibilities on the court. • Great teams have the ability to play on any court without any change in performance level (home, road, etc). • Coach Bob Boyd always said that you must find a way to take something from the chalkboard to the floor in order for it to show up in a game.

    Northwestern State Intramurals COVID VOLLEYBALL/BASKETBALL GUIDELINES 1. All sign ups must be done on IMleagues prior to the event. All rosters must be filled out in their entirety to verify student eligibility. You must show your student ID to play but will not turn in your student ID to staff. 2. Intramural Staff & Participants’ temperature will be checked upon entry into the gym. Only one door will be used for entry. 3. Only players and coaches on rosters will be allowed in the gym during scheduled game/match times. NO fans or extra guests will be allowed in the gym during game/match times. All players and coaches should exit facility immediately at the conclusion of play. 4. Games/matches will be scheduled with an extra 15 minutes apart to allow facility to clear. 5. Only one basketball game and one volleyball game will be scheduled at a time. 6. Student IDs will not be collected during the games/matches but must be shown upon entry of the gym. 7. Pinnies and jerseys will not be distributed by Intramural Staff. Teams must provide their own jerseys with numbers to play. 8. No group huddles between teams will be permitted on the court. NO handshakes at the end of the game. NO high fives during the game. 9. No early warmup is allowed in the facility while scheduled games are playing. Teams will be afforded a 10-minute warmup once they are allowed in the gym. This may be modified and reduced to accommodate the schedule. FACE COVERING PROTOCOLS ALL players and coaches MUST always wear a protective face covering when entering the gym.
