2016‐2017 CITY SERVICE CORPS MEMBER POSITION DESCRIPTION Organics (Compost) Corps: Hosted by Queens Botanical Garden* Member Position / Title: Compost Corps Member, NYC Compost Project Hosted by Queens Botanical Garden (Queens) # of Member Slots in this Position: 2 City Agency Host Site Name: Department of Sanitation Mission and Goals of Host Site: Queens Botanical Garden is an urban oasis where people, plants and cultures are celebrated through inspiring gardens, innovative educational programs and demonstrations of environmental stewardship. Mission and Goals for the specific program the member is serving in: The Compost Corps will increase the impact of the NYC Compost Project by finding creative ways to reach new and larger audiences to raise awareness about composting and its benefits. The NYC Compost Project works to rebuild NYC’s soils by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to produce and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs are implemented by DSNY‐funded teams at seven host organizations, including Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Build It Green!NYC, Earth Matter NY, Lower East Side Ecology Center, Queens Botanical Garden, Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden, and The New York Botanical Garden. Community Need for the program the member is serving on: Corps Members will help us address the need to help educate New Yorker’s about composting and the Mayor’s goal to be Zero Waste by 2030. Member Position Summary: The NYC Compost Project works to rebuild NYC’s soils by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to produce and use compost locally. Compost Corps Members will support the NYC Compost Project by increasing the reach of our organics recovery, technical assistance, and public engagement activities, and by identifying and implementing creative ways to reach new audiences and raise awareness about how composting benefits our communities. Essential Functions of Position: The NYC Compost Project Hosted by Queens Botanical Garden is looking for Corps Members to engage in the following program areas: Developing media about NYCCP hosted by QBG. Assist with farm and compost operations and organics collection. Lead volunteers in activities with QBG Farm and Compost. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities of Member: Interest and experience in hands‐on education around compost Enjoys outdoor physical work Organizational skills and basic computer literacy Innovative, collaborative, committed to sustainability practices Preferred Academic and Experience Qualifications: High School Diploma/GED * Please note: The duties and responsibilities in this service positon description may be subject to change.
