An Introduction to Topology An Introduction to Topology The Classification theorem for Surfaces By E. C. Zeeman Introduction. The classification theorem is a beautiful example of geometric topology. Although it was discovered in the last century*, yet it manages to convey the spirit of present day research. The proof that we give here is elementary, and its is hoped more intuitive than that found in most textbooks, but in none the less rigorous. It is designed for readers who have never done any topology before. It is the sort of mathematics that could be taught in schools both to foster geometric intuition, and to counteract the present day alarming tendency to drop geometry. It is profound, and yet preserves a sense of fun. In Appendix 1 we explain how a deeper result can be proved if one has available the more sophisticated tools of analytic topology and algebraic topology. Examples. Before starting the theorem let us look at a few examples of surfaces. In any branch of mathematics it is always a good thing to start with examples, because they are the source of our intuition. All the following pictures are of surfaces in 3-dimensions. In example 1 by the word “sphere” we mean just the surface of the sphere, and not the inside. In fact in all the examples we mean just the surface and not the solid inside. 1. Sphere. 2. Torus (or inner tube). 3. Knotted torus. 4. CERF THEORY FOR GRAPHS Allen Hatcher and Karen Vogtmann ABSTRACT. We develop a deformation theory for k-parameter families of pointed marked graphs with xed fundamental group Fn. Applications include a simple geometric proof of stability of the rational homology of Aut(Fn), compu- tations of the rational homology in small dimensions, proofs that various natural complexes of free factorizations of Fn are highly connected, and an improvement on the stability range for the integral homology of Aut(Fn). §1. Introduction It is standard practice to study groups by studying their actions on well-chosen spaces. In the case of the outer automorphism group Out(Fn) of the free group Fn on n generators, a good space on which this group acts was constructed in [3]. In the present paper we study an analogous space on which the automorphism group Aut(Fn) acts. This space, which we call An, is a sort of Teichmuller space of nite basepointed graphs with fundamental group Fn. As often happens, specifying basepoints has certain technical advantages. In particu- lar, basepoints give rise to a nice ltration An,0 An,1 of An by degree, where we dene the degree of a nite basepointed graph to be the number of non-basepoint vertices, counted “with multiplicity” (see section 3). The main technical result of the paper, the Degree Theorem, implies that the pair (An, An,k)isk-connected, so that An,k behaves something like the k-skeleton of An. From the Degree Theorem we derive these applications: (1) We show the natural stabilization map Hi(Aut(Fn); Z) → Hi(Aut(Fn+1); Z)isan isomorphism for n 2i + 3, a signicant improvement on the quadratic dimension range obtained in [5]. -

This technical report summarized facts from the basic theory of filter convergence spaces and gives detailed proofs for them. Many of the results collected here are well known for various types of spaces. We have made no attempt to find the original proofs. 1. Introduction Mathematical notions such as convergence, continuity, and separation are, at textbook level, usually associated with topological spaces. It is possible, however, to introduce them in a much more abstract way, based on axioms for convergence instead of neighborhood. This approach was explored in seminal work by Choquet [4], Hausdorff [12], Katˇetov [14], Kent [16], and others. Here we give a brief introduction to this line of reasoning. While the material is well known to specialists it does not seem to be easily accessible to non-topologists. In some cases we include proofs of elementary facts for two reasons: (i) The most basic facts are quoted without proofs in research papers, and (ii) the proofs may serve as examples to see the rather abstract formalism at work. 2. Using tools from homotopy theory, we prove that in this range it agrees with homology of symmetric groups. In particular we confirm the conjecture that stable rational homology of Aut(Fn) vanishes. SYMPLECTIC NEIGHBORHOOD OF CROSSING SYMPLECTIC SUBMANIFOLDS ROBERTA GUADAGNI ABSTRACT. This paper presents a proof of the existence of standard symplectic coordinates near a set of smooth, orthogonally intersecting symplectic submanifolds. It is a generaliza- tion of the standard symplectic neighborhood theorem. Moreover, in the presence of a com- pact Lie group G acting symplectically, the coordinates can be chosen to be G-equivariant. INTRODUCTION The main result in this paper is a generalization of the symplectic tubular neighbor- hood theorem (and the existence of Darboux coordinates) to a set of symplectic submani- folds that intersect each other orthogonally. This can help us understand singularities in symplectic submanifolds. Orthogonally intersecting symplectic submanifolds (or, more generally, positively intersecting symplectic submanifolds as described in the appendix) are the symplectic analogue of normal crossing divisors in algebraic geometry. Orthog- onal intersecting submanifolds, as explained in this paper, have a standard symplectic neighborhood. Positively intersecting submanifolds, as explained in the appendix and in [TMZ14a], can be deformed to obtain the same type of standard symplectic neighbor- hood. The result has at least two applications to current research: it yields some intuition for the construction of generalized symplectic sums (see [TMZ14b]), and it describes the symplectic geometry of degenerating families of Kahler¨ manifolds as needed for mirror symmetry (see [GS08]). The application to toric degenerations is described in detail in the follow-up paper [Gua]. While the proofs are somewhat technical, the result is a natural generalization of We- instein’s neighborhood theorem. Given a symplectic submanifold X of (M, w), there ex- ists a tubular neighborhood embedding f : NX ! M defined on a neighborhood of X. -

Introduction An important feature of modern science and engineering is that data of various kinds is being produced at an unprecedented rate. This is so in part because of new experimental methods, and in part because of the increase in the availability of high powered computing technology. It is also clear that the nature of the data we are obtaining is significantly different. For example, it is now often the case that we are given data in the form of very long vectors, where all but a few of the coordinates turn out to be irrelevant to the questions of interest, and further that we don’t necessarily know which coordinates are the interesting ones. A related fact is that the data is often very high-dimensional, which severely restricts our ability to visualize it. The data obtained is also often much noisier than in the past and has more missing information (missing data). This is particularly so in the case of biological data, particularly high throughput data from microarray or other sources. Our ability to analyze this data, both in terms of quantity and the nature of the data, is clearly not keeping pace with the data being produced. In this paper, we will discuss how geometry and topology can be applied to make useful contributions to the analysis of various kinds of data. -

Graphs on surfaces, the generalized Euler's formula and the classification theorem ZdenˇekDvoˇr´ak October 28, 2020 In this lecture, we allow the graphs to have loops and parallel edges. In addition to the plane (or the sphere), we can draw the graphs on the surface of the torus or on more complicated surfaces. Definition 1. A surface is a compact connected 2-dimensional manifold with- out boundary. Intuitive explanation: • 2-dimensional manifold without boundary: Each point has a neighbor- hood homeomorphic to an open disk, i.e., \locally, the surface looks at every point the same as the plane." • compact: \The surface can be covered by a finite number of such neigh- borhoods." • connected: \The surface has just one piece." Examples: • The sphere and the torus are surfaces. • The plane is not a surface, since it is not compact. • The closed disk is not a surface, since it has a boundary. From the combinatorial perspective, it does not make sense to distinguish between some of the surfaces; the same graphs can be drawn on the torus and on a deformed torus (e.g., a coffee mug with a handle). For us, two surfaces will be equivalent if they only differ by a homeomorphism; a function f :Σ1 ! Σ2 between two surfaces is a homeomorphism if f is a bijection, continuous, and the inverse f −1 is continuous as well. In particular, this 1 implies that f maps simple continuous curves to simple continuous curves, and thus it maps a drawing of a graph in Σ1 to a drawing of the same graph in Σ2. -

CHAPTER 10 Seifert manifolds In the previous chapter we have proved various general theorems on three- manifolds, and it is now time to construct examples. A rich and important source is a family of manifolds built by Seifert in the 1930s, which generalises circle bundles over surfaces by admitting some “singular”fibres. The three- manifolds that admit such kind offibration are now called Seifert manifolds. In this chapter we introduce and completely classify (up to diffeomor- phisms) the Seifert manifolds. In Chapter 12 we will then show how to ge- ometrise them, by assigning a nice Riemannian metric to each. We will show, for instance, that all the elliptic andflat three-manifolds are in fact particular kinds of Seifert manifolds. 10.1. Lens spaces We introduce some of the simplest 3-manifolds, the lens spaces. These manifolds (and many more) are easily described using an important three- dimensional construction, called Dehnfilling. 10.1.1. Dehnfilling. If a 3-manifoldM has a spherical boundary com- ponent, we can cap it off with a ball. IfM has a toric boundary component, there is no canonical way to cap it off: the simplest object that we can attach to it is a solid torusD S 1, but the resulting manifold depends on the gluing × map. Recognizing Surfaces
RECOGNIZING SURFACES Ivo Nikolov and Alexandru I. Suciu Mathematics Department College of Arts and Sciences Northeastern University Abstract The subject of this poster is the interplay between the topology and the combinatorics of surfaces. The main problem of Topology is to classify spaces up to continuous deformations, known as homeomorphisms. Under certain conditions, topological invariants that capture qualitative and quantitative properties of spaces lead to the enumeration of homeomorphism types. Surfaces are some of the simplest, yet most interesting topological objects. The poster focuses on the main topological invariants of two-dimensional manifolds—orientability, number of boundary components, genus, and Euler characteristic—and how these invariants solve the classification problem for compact surfaces. The poster introduces a Java applet that was written in Fall, 1998 as a class project for a Topology I course. It implements an algorithm that determines the homeomorphism type of a closed surface from a combinatorial description as a polygon with edges identified in pairs. The input for the applet is a string of integers, encoding the edge identifications. The output of the applet consists of three topological invariants that completely classify the resulting surface. Topology of Surfaces Topology is the abstraction of certain geometrical ideas, such as continuity and closeness. Roughly speaking, topol- ogy is the exploration of manifolds, and of the properties that remain invariant under continuous, invertible transforma- tions, known as homeomorphisms. The basic problem is to classify manifolds according to homeomorphism type. In higher dimensions, this is an impossible task, but, in low di- mensions, it can be done. Surfaces are some of the simplest, yet most interesting topological objects. -
Commentary on Thurston's Work on Foliations
COMMENTARY ON FOLIATIONS* Quoting Thurston's definition of foliation [F11]. \Given a large supply of some sort of fabric, what kinds of manifolds can be made from it, in a way that the patterns match up along the seams? This is a very general question, which has been studied by diverse means in differential topology and differential geometry. ... A foliation is a manifold made out of striped fabric - with infintely thin stripes, having no space between them. The complete stripes, or leaves, of the foliation are submanifolds; if the leaves have codimension k, the foliation is called a codimension k foliation. In order that a manifold admit a codimension- k foliation, it must have a plane field of dimension (n − k)." Such a foliation is called an (n − k)-dimensional foliation. The first definitive result in the subject, the so called Frobenius integrability theorem [Fr], concerns a necessary and sufficient condition for a plane field to be the tangent field of a foliation. See [Spi] Chapter 6 for a modern treatment. As Frobenius himself notes [Sa], a first proof was given by Deahna [De]. While this work was published in 1840, it took another hundred years before a geometric/topological theory of foliations was introduced. This was pioneered by Ehresmann and Reeb in a series of Comptes Rendus papers starting with [ER] that was quickly followed by Reeb's foundational 1948 thesis [Re1]. See Haefliger [Ha4] for a detailed account of developments in this period. Reeb [Re1] himself notes that the 1-dimensional theory had already undergone considerable development through the work of Poincare [P], Bendixson [Be], Kaplan [Ka] and others.
