Africa Express At PUMA, we are committed to supporting art, sport and peace initiatives on the African continent. puma.creative is honoured to be the primary sponsor of Africa Express, and we are proud to support this project as it reflects our interest in diversity, creativity, and innovation.

Damon Albarn–from the bands Blur and the Gorillaz–developed the Africa Express music program to create a platform for African and Western creative talents to collaborate. It is an idea centered on music, people and a celebration of global culture. puma.creative and Africa Express have partnered with the mission of taking African music to a wider audience by combining the sounds of already glo- bally recognized Western artists with African music talents through collaboration and interaction. Invited by Damon Albarn, participating artists include Western musicians Bjork and Elvis Costello as well as African artists Baaba Maal and Mahmoud Ahmed.

By creating collaborations between Western and African musicians the benefits become two-fold. Africa Express highlights that Africa isn’t just a place of blight and disease, rather a place of unique and creative expression. Secondly Africa Express gives western musi- cians a way of developing an open and honest understanding of the birthplace of all music. It is in essence a trans cultural college, in which both parties use the language of music to connect, putting the complications of the “music business” aside to play together in a communicative ego free environment focused rather on integration.

“The ultimate aim of Africa Express is to help strengthen the indigenous African music industry to such a level whereby it can compete on its own terms with those in the West, by means of offering training, support and technical assistance alongside any direct input from artists themselves.” (Ian Birrell – Co-Founder of Africa Express) PUMA.Creative 2009 00707

Africa Express Performers and Collaborators include: Adrian Sherwood, The Aliens, Amadou & Mariam, Amy Sacko, Audio Bullys, Ayo, Baaba Maal, Ba Cissoko, Bashy, Bassekou Kouyate, Billy Bragg, Bjork, Daara J, Damon Albarn, De La Soul, Diabel Cissokho, Don Letts, Elvis Costello, Eslam Jawaad, Fatboy Slim, Femi Kuti, Flea, Franz Ferdinand, Gang of Four, Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, The Good The Bad The Queen, Gruff Rhys, Hard-Fi, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Jamie T, Johnny Marr, Juldeh Camara, Justin Adams, Kano, Kasai Allstars, Kasse Maddy, Keziah Jones, K’naan, Konono No 1, The Magic Numbers, Mark Ronson, Martha Wainwright, Martina Topley-Bird, Massive Attack, Mathieu Chedid, Mehdi Haddab, Modeste, Mo DJ, Ms Dynamite, Muntu Valdo, Natty, Nitin Sawhney, Okwess International, Oumou Sangare, Paul Weller, Rachid Taha, Radioclit, Remi Nicole, Reverend & The Makers, Rise Kagona, Rokia Traore, Rosie Wilson, Salif Keita, Scratch, Shlomo, Shy FX, Sola Akingbola, Souad Massi, The Specials, Staff Benda Bilili, Sway, Terri Walker, Tinariwen, Tony Allen, Toumani Diabate, Ty, Turin Brakes, Vieux Farka Toure, VV Brown, Wasis Diop and Wuru Samba.

The resulting trip saw a 15-strong party travel to Mali, where the likes of Norman Cook, Damon Albarn, Jamie T and Martha Wainwright met and played with Salif Keita, Toumani Diabate, Amadou & Mariam and Bassekou Kouyate. The following year Africa Express returned to take over the Park Stage at Glastonbury Festival. With collaborations from some of the biggest names in African and British music, the event was confirmed by the British media as “one of the most thrilling musical spectacles of this or any other Glastonbury”. Since then there have been events in Kinshasa, Liverpool, Lagos and , with the goal of introducing Africa Express to and Berlin.

This year, sponsored by puma.creative, these music collaborations of over 100 participating artists culminate in an Fnac festival and Africa Express concert in Paris on August 5, 2009. Attracting over 30,000 people this live music event will bring African artists to international audiences placing them on the same stage as their Western artist collaborators. 08 PUMA.Creative 2009

It also includes live performances and interviews with Damon Albarn, Tony Allen, Martha Wainwright and Baaba Maal, amongst others. PUMA.Creative 2009 00909

In the interest of encouraging visibility as well as project sustainability puma.creative and Africa Express have created project T-shirts. These T-shirts have been produced using the Cotton made in Africa campaign, supporting subsistence farmers in Africa in keeping with puma.safe’s focus on social sustainability, and will be worn by artists participating.

“Africa Express Presents…” DVD/CD box set as well as the Africa Express T-shirt is available through PUMA stores in cities in and North America. “Africa Express Presents…” is also available through download at Fnac.com and AWAL/iTunes. Funds raised will be used to build sound studios across Africa as well as fund tours in the Western market. By supporting Africa Express, puma.creative facilitates the development of individual artists as well as the music infrastructure within and outside of Africa.

Hussein Chalayan Retrospective, Design Museum, London Partnering with the London Design Museum, puma.creative continues its efforts to support creative talent, bringing together individual artists and cultural organisations and providing them with a platform for exchange and global exposure. Hussein Chalayan’s retrospec- tive From Fashion and Back was the first comprehensive presentation of his work in the UK. Spanning fifteen years of experimental projects, the exhibition explored Hussein Chalayan’s creative approach, his inspirations and the themes that influence his work such as cultural identity, displacement and migration.

Twice-awarded British Designer of the Year, Hussein Chalayan selected 37 outfits for the From Fashion and Back retrospective, each displayed with ideas showing his inspiration for each creation. These included pieces from ‘Afterwords’, a collection of Chalayan’s outfits exploring wearable architecture, and ‘Airborne’ including a dress with 15,000 LED lights, as well as remote control pieces from his ‘Before Minus Now’ collection. Presenting fashion as a site of exploration and as expressions of concepts, Chalayan challenges preconceived notions of what clothing can mean, rather than just being functional. Motivated by ideas and disciplines not readily associated with fashion, his pioneering work crosses between architecture, design, philosophy, anthropology, science and technology.

Hussein Chalayan is revered as one of the most inventive designers working today. Inspired by architecture, Chalayan’s work con stant ly questions the role of clothing, transforming garments into furniture and functional objects.

To commemorate this exhibition puma.creative and the Design Museum produced a limited edition T-shirt designed by Chalayan. As a global designer, artist and filmmaker, he has also brought his use of new technology and forward-thinking design to all PUMA Sport Fashion collections working as the Creative Director of Puma’s sports fashion division.

Central Saint Martins Bursary Award For the third year running, the puma.creative-sponsored bursary award—linked to the sponsorship of the Central Saint Martins MA fashion show – helps students to afford their studies within and beyond the college.

Each year puma.creative awards bursaries to three promising Central Saint Martin’s fashion design students. The aim of bursaries is to offer the opportunity for postgraduate study to talented and deserving applicants who would otherwise be unable to finance themselves through postgraduate study.

The Central Saint Martins Bursary also offers invaluable global exposure of the winning students in PUMA concept stores and prize money. In 2007 students were invited to redesign PUMA’s iconic footwear collection. In 2008 students were invited to respond to the Beijing Olympics designing PUMA bags around this theme. In 2009 students were invited to design biker jackets and create iconic Sport Fashion Motorsport designs (as part of their MA exhibition fashion show), distributed in the PUMA Black Stores and select fashion retailers.

PUMA is committed to supporting young fashion talent, through the bursary and prize, to help students to not only launch their careers but also gives the opportunity for graduates to have their designs sold in PUMA concept stores around the world as well as on online.

Central Saint Martins Fashion Show Exhibition The Central Saint Martins School of Fashion is one of the most respected fashion schools in the World and every year Central Saint Martins host their MA graduate fashion shows during London Fashion week.

This year, puma.creative linked with iconic motorsport brand DUCATI and asked the students in the course to develop the ulti- mate performance ‘Biker Jacket’. DUCATI also generously donated three ‘Monster’ bikes and three students were invited by Professor Louise Wilson to translate their graduation collection graphics and create unique motorbikes–these were auctioned through the puma. creative website in March 2009, the proceeds of which entirely benefitted the MA Fashion course.

This year the fashion show and award came with an important level of visibility. The DUCATI-inspired biker jacket designs were created as part of the competition and produced by PUMA. The winning students’ jackets where featured in the fashion show and will be distributed to the “PUMA Black Stores” and in selected fashion stores across the globe from August 2009.
