The Editor’s Shout Congratulations go to Simon and all the staff at The Rose & Portcullis in Butleigh for being voted Somerset CAMRA Pub of the Season for Autumn 2014. This lovely, stone built pub on the edge of Butleigh offers a friendly welcome, a great selection of quality real ales and good food as well. Well worth a visit. Congratulations also go to everyone at Pebbles Tavern in Watchet. Following their award for Somerset CAMRA Cider Pub of the Year, they went forward to the regional competition and we are pleased to report that they have now won that round of judging and so have become the CAMRA South West Region Cider Pub of the Year. Pebbles Tavern is a small bar in Watchet, selling a large range of local real ciders from all over Somerset (and a few other places too). It also serves several real ales straight from the cask. The time is fast approaching when all the Somerset CAMRA members begin to look forward to the annual Real Ale Festival at Minehead. This years event, our 15th at Minehead, will be held on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th September and we look forward to seeing you all at the event. This event takes a great deal of planning and organisation by a very willing but fairly small group of dedicated volunteers who really enjoy the work involved behind the scenes but come the event itself, are often overwhelmed by the resulting popularity of the event so we are appealing to members out there who feel they could come along and offer some assistance on either Saturday or Sunday to contact us and tell us when they are able to assist. If you are able to assist, please contact Katie Redgate on 01823 279962.

Long Serving CAMRA Member Ties the Knot A beautiful summer Saturday afternoon in July at Taunton School was the setting for the wedding of long serving Somerset CAMRA member Colin Heapy to Lynn Coles. The happy couple were joined by family and friends for the wedding ceremony and the reception followed by an evening of further celebration with many more friends attending, helped along with two casks of Moor Revival and Nor’ Hop which were eagerly consumed. S o m e r s e t CAMRA Pints of View would like to congratulate Colin and Lynn and wish them every happiness for the future. The Royal Oak Stoke St. Gregory, Taunton, TA3 6EH

The weekend of 13 and 14 September 2014 are the dates of this year's Somerset CAMRA Real Ale & Cider Festival, held at the ’s Minehead station platform (TA24 5BG). The festival will be open from 11am until 11pm on Saturday and between noon and 4pm on Sunday. Masters Brewery of Greenham, Somerset have kindly agreed to be the main festival sponsor this year.

Real Ale, Cider, Perry and Wine We plan to have in excess of 100 real ales, several local ciders, perry and a small selection of wine.- The local Somerset breweries will, as usual, be very well represented.- In addition to these, there will be a wide selection of ales from all around Great Britain, showcasing the incredibly diverse range of tastes and styles produced by our multitude of breweries.- We hope to have locally brewed festival special beers, fruit beers and a cask conditioned lager. Each train buffet car will serve a Somerset ale (from polypins) and a choice of bottled beers, including beers brewed especially for the WSR.- Cider will be served at a separate dedicated bar.

Food and Soft Drinks The Turntable Café on Minehead Station will offer a range of hot and cold food, sandwiches, and soft drinks.- A Cornish pasty van will be positioned by the station entrance on both days and there will be a hog roast on Saturday evening.- There are several other food outlets close to Minehead station offering plenty of choice to hungry festival goers.

Live Entertainment On Saturday evening, between 8pm and 10.30pm, we are looking forward to welcoming Four Men on the Job. Kevin Jones, owner os Somerset’s Stocklinch Ales is the front man on the job!

Sunday afternoon we welcome back THE TONE VALLEY JAZZ BAND to perform their easy-listening traditional jazz sounds.- Now in their 55th year of playing together, they put their success and longevity down to cask- conditioned ale and good living.- Just the ticket for a Sunday session!

Entry, Glasses and Tokens Entrance to the festival will again be FREE, though you will need to purchase a glass which you can keep.- You may choose a festival souvenir glass or a cheaper alternative. A token ticket system will operate at the bar.- Buy your token tickets when you buy your glass.- One ticket for a half-pint, two tickets for a pint.- No cash will be taken at the bar, although unused tokens will be fully refundable. A souvenir glass and token ‘starter pack’ will be available to speed up service at peak times following each train arrival. We will also have festival branded souvenir clothing for sale

THE SOMERSET BREWERY ASSOCIATION—SoBA Somerset Brewers thorough out the County are setting up their own Brewery Association.

Part funded by European Development Fund with the interesting title of Fish & Chips, there are 7 partners in 5 different regions of Europe benefiting from this funding, including Somerset and South East , plus others in the Flanders, Zeeland, Antwerp and Meetjesland regions of Belgium and Holland.

Soba is a collaborative marketing vehicle for Somerset Beers and Breweries, operating primarily through the website www.somersetbrewers.com and via twitter and facebook. On Tuesday 10th of June I was invited to the SoBA official launch at Cricket Cheese Farm on A39 at Nether Stowey.

Lead by the very capable Sally Campbell from www.somersetfood.org, the two hour event started by her explaining the idea behind the venture and what it might hopefully achieve and mean to all Somerset County Breweries.

Present were, Cottage, Quantock, RCH, Stocklinch and Stowey Breweries all with tasting samples, in addition Orchard Pig Cider had their range available.

To compliment the Beer there was a selection of Cheeses from Cricketer and products from a new venture Somerset Charcuterie. Various local Somerset produced meats in a continental style, very nice and tasty they all were.

Every one left with a presentation pack of bottled beer from Cheddar and Glastonbury Breweries.

SoBA will be run by the Brewers themselves, led by Ian Pearson of Stowey Brewery and Paul Nash of Glastonbury Ales. It has yet to form a committee and start regular meetings, but it looks a good venture to be involved in. Let’s hope all our branch Breweries and Cider Producers think it is worthwhile to support.

For further details contact Sally Campbell at [email protected] or view the web site, www.somersetbrewers.com or0 follow Soba on twitter @drinksomerset or like them on facebook somersetbrewers. Sally is based in Axbridge and having trained and worked as a brewer at a number of our large National Breweries achived qaulifications Associate of the Institite of Brewing, as well as passing the Brewers' Guild Approved training scheme. What Pub, Beer Scoring and the Good Beer Guide

You are probably aware of the ‘Good Beer Guide’, National CAMRA’s flagship publication which lists the best pubs in the UK. But what you may not know is how those pubs are selected to appear in the Guide. The answer is that it is largely via beer scores submitted by CAMRA members from all over the country. So if you are a CAMRA member you can send in beer scores, If you’ve ever wondered why your favourite pub isn’t in the Guide, this may well be because you, and others, haven’t entered scores rating the quality of beer there. By beer scoring, you can contribute to the process of selection of pubs that go in the Good Beer Guide. So how do I score the quality of the beer? You don’t have to be an ‘expert’ to begin scoring your beer. However, it is not about your personal favourite beer receiving the highest scores! You may try a beer that isn’t to your normal taste but what you need to consider is the quality of that beer, how well the pub has kept it and served it, and score it according to the general guide below. It is a simple system of a ten point range from 0 to 5, with half points being

Page 21

used if your opinion of the beer falls between two categories. 0. No cask ale available 1. Poor. Beer is anything from barely drinkable to drinkable with considerable resentment. 2. Average. Competently kept, drinkable pint but doesn’t inspire in any way, not worth moving to another pub but you drink the beer without really noticing. 3. Good. Good beer in good form. You may cancel plans to move to the next pub. You want to stay for another pint and may seek out the beer again 4. Very Good. Excellent beer in excellent condition. You stay put! 5. Perfect. Probably the best you are ever likely to find. A seasoned drinker will award this score very rarely. How do I submit my scores? In order to submit your scores you need to login to CAMRA’s online pub guide www.whatpub.com either on a computer or by smart phone. Here you will find a list of over 35,800 real ale pubs from all over the UK; these are not all Good Beer Guide pubs, merely pubs that serve real ale. In order to start submitting scores via What Pub you need to:- 1. Login. To do this you need your membership number and your CAMRA password. 2. You can then search for your pub by name. Be careful here as there are many pubs in the country which share the same name. My advice is to search by the pub name and the town. The What Pub smart phone web page also gives you the option to search for real ale pubs nearby, very useful if you are in an unfamiliar town 3. Once you have found your pub a ‘Submit Beer Scores’ box will appear on the left hand side of the screen (or on the tab bar underneath the pub photo if you are using a smart phone). 4. Simply fill in the date and your score then as you begin typing the brewery name should automatically appear underneath were you are typing. You do not have to enter the name of the beer your are drinking but if you wish to do so once you have entered the brewery name you should be able to click on the arrow in the Beer box and a drop down list of that brewery’s beers should appear. In some cases the beer you are drinking may be new or a one off by the Brewery so may not appear on the list, if this is the case you can simply type in the beer name. Select the correct one click ‘submit score’ and your score will be entered into the database. It is as simple as that. An added bonus is that it will keep a record of your scores so you can look back to see what beers you have had and how you rated them if you want.

Celebrations abound at The Brewers Many pubs have all kinds of special events or anniversaries but it is not often that they occur in the same month. May saw Duncan Webb, the Landlord of the Brewers Arms in South Petherton, celebrate his 50th birthday and then at the end of the month, he held the 20th of their fabulous beer festivals – there cannot be too many of the country's pubs which can boast 20 consecutive festivals under the same landlord. The locals, and visiting Ale Devotees, were only too happy to celebrate both occasions; Otter Brewery were only too happy to assist as well.
