  • First Look Program 2021
WELCOME to FIRST LOOK 2021 Welcome to the First Look Festival of 2021! One of my great pleasures as Dean of the School of Cinematic Arts is being able to introduce our festival films each year, and congratulate all the deserving students who contributed to them. This year I am especially proud of the determination and dedication inherent in these projects, as they were completed within the limitations of Covid 19 protocols. Despite this, the work you will see here is of the highest quality, and many will go on to tour the film festival circuit and win awards in the year ahead. They will also serve as calling cards for the talented young professionals who are graduating from the School and launching careers as filmmakers. Our students always depend on their family and friends to help them through their programs. Filmmaking is a challenging endeavor, and it takes a village of encouragement to have the confidence needed to bring a project to fruition. This year our students truly needed support, as our campus was shut down and many of them had to return home. Despite not being able to meet in person, the filmmakers found ways to collaborate. And as their films will attest, did so brilliantly! So please enjoy this year’s festival. And congratulations to all the students whose names appear in the end credits of these films. Elizabeth M. Daley Steven J. Ross/Time Warner Professor and Dean USC School of Cinematic Arts I firmly believe that film has been the major art form of the 20th century, and will continue to have a powerful influence on our culture and society.

The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed our lives, requiring the entire University of Iowa to shift to online teaching on March 30. The transition required endless patience, flexibility, creativity (and lots of Zoom sessions – see picture above of a departmental meeting), on the part of students, faculty and staff. But one thing it did not change was our commitment to excellence in teaching. I am very proud of our 25 South Madison Street department’s abundant dedication and compassion in meeting this 105 Becker Communication Studies Building ongoing challenge. COLLAPSING EMPIRE By John Scalzi 19.9 The Empire has been going with the Flow among the stars for years to avoid the lightspeed limit. The Flow makes possible trade across 47 enclaves of humanity, but change is coming, and it could take down a system that’s lasted for over a thousand years. As voices of concern begin to be raised about the stability of the Flow, a new emperox takes the throne. Can young Lord Marce Claremont escape in time to warn Cardenia about the disaster that is coming? And what about those others who see this as an opportunity to move forward their own ambitions? A QUIET PLACE Screenplay by Bryan Woods & Scott Beck and John Krasinski Story by Bryan Woods & Scott Beck BLACK We hear, very clearly, the sound of light wind. 1 EXT. TOWN - MAIN ST. - LATE AFTERNOON 1 We come up on... a streetlight. There is no illumination... and no movement. We hold on it for a long moment when suddenly... The streetlight bobs... and then begins to sway. We slowly begin to rise up on the streetlight to reveal... a small bird has landed on it. We continue to rise to reveal, behind the bird... Wind blows through the gargantuan evergreens that seem to engulf the narrow main street of a small town in upstate New York. Shop windows and cars on either side covered in dust, the place seems frozen in time. There is no movement. In the very middle of the road one can see... sand. A bizarre incongruity, a long pathway about a shovels width runs the full length of the street with offshoots into open doorways of some of the shops. We hold for a long moment: 2 INT. GENERAL STORE - FRONT - LATE AFTERNOON 2 Slowly pushing through the doorway of a large general store, also covered in dust. To the left, a cash register with small shelves of nearly empty candy boxes below. To the right, a towering shelf full of bags of potato chips, nacho chips and pretzels... None are missing. 3 INT. GENERAL STORE AISLES - LATE AFTERNOON 3 WE MOVE SLOWLY across the floor, down the middle of a general store. Amid the towering shelves of goods on either side, one may recognize a barely perceptible pattern of which shelves are bare and which are not.

John Krasinski and the Tense Wait for ‘A Quiet Place Part IIʼ Itʼs been more than a year since the film he wrote and directed was originally set for release. Now, as the sequel to the 2018 hit reaches theaters, Hollywood is holding its breath. May 19, 2021 “I have no idea whatʼs going to happen with the box office,” Krasinski said. “Whatʼs most important to me is that if you want to see this movie, Iʼm going to show it to you.”Bryan Derballa for The New York Times “I have no idea whatʼs going to happen with the box office,” Krasinski said. “Whatʼs most important to me is that if you want to see this movie, Iʼm going to show it to you.”Bryan Derballa for The New York Times On the night of March 8, 2020, John Krasinski was celebrating the imminent release of his new post- apocalyptic thriller, “A Quiet Place Part II,” which he wrote and directed. He proudly walked the red carpet for its premiere at the Rose Theater as he posed for photographs with Emily Blunt, his wife and the filmʼs star. He told the crowd at Jazz at Lincoln Center how excited he was to share the movie with them and, shortly, with audiences everywhere. Instead, in the days that followed, the world turned into a kind of horror movie itself. An unseen enemy drove people into seclusion; once-thriving locales turned empty and entire industries were put on hold. The release of “A Quiet Place Part II” was postponed. Krasinski spent that time thinking mostly about the safety of his family, but when he contemplated the uncertain state of his industry he also wondered what would happen to his film.
