ith Karrin Allyson hanging out at the top of the chart, we thought it apt to have the charming singer chat about her Wnew album Footprints. As anyone who has seen this Ne- braska native perform live knows, Allyson’s easy Midwestern charm is a nice counterpoint to the “Diva” role often thrust unfairly upon woman singers of her stature. Also check out the JazzWeek Top 5 this week where Karrin picks six singers working today that she digs. – Tad Hendrickson

JazzWeek: You’re a classically trained pianist, yet you are now really more of a singer than a singer-pianist. Karrin Allyson: I still play piano live a certain percent- age of the time on every gig. When I have someone like Bruce Barth with me, I don’t sit down nearly as much be- cause he is a wonderful wonderful jazz pianist. I’m more of an accompanist for myself. If I have a guitar trio plus me, then I sit down and play more. Is it different to sing versus to play and sing? Yeah. I probably sing a little differently when I play. It frees me up to some degree to stand up and sing, and I certainly do different material when I stand up and sing, rather than when I sit down and play. If that makes sense. It’s also a very personal thing to play for yourself. It’s nice. I’ve heard varied stories about people who play and sing: some can’t do one without the other, others can’t do both, others do some of each. What prompted you to want to start singing when you already were a student of the piano? I would say that it was the music that we did for the re- cord Wild For You. The Carly Simon, Carole King, Joni

I got more and Mitchell stuff. I went out and got the sheet music for those songs to play, and I started to sing along with it. So that’s where it all began for me. Then when more away from I started to get into jazz in college, my friends got me into Nancy Wilson, Nat King Cole and Lambert Hendricks and Ross. So I was really bitten hard by the piano and the jazz bug, and it started to get into my repertoire and then pretty much take more toward over. Then I formed a couple of my own jazz ensembles and that’s how it all started. During it, I got more and more away from the piano and more toward singing. Now I singing. I wasn’t playing “Footprints,” and I wanted to be able to play and sing it. These were both tunes I always loved. Those two tunes are actually the first two I gave to Chris Caswell, who wrote many of the new lyrics. I had been trying to write lyrics to those songs for years and have never been happy with them. How did that collaboration work? When he started to be so prolific with these songs, I thought, “Man, this is re- ally something.” The choices you make in life often can make all the difference. It may not even be the execution, which can come later, but the decision to do it. So he and I struck up a very good working relationship that still goes on now. I chose the songs to start with, then he picked some. Some worked better than others, and some might end up on another project but not Footprints. That’s quite an asset, your own lyricist. Yeah. It’s something that I never ever looked for or expected. I like the story behind “The Turnaround” in the liner notes, that must have been funny. Yeah, I wanted him to do the Ornette Coleman song and he thought I meant the Hank Mobley song. He faxed me the lyrics to “The Turnaround,” which I had asked for. I didn’t even think that there would be two songs with the same title. I kept trying to make it work with Ornette’s tune, and I would sit down at the piano but couldn’t figure out it was supposed to work. and told him: “Chris I like these lyrics, but they’re not really working for me. Listen to this and tell me if this is anywhere close.” [Laughs] He says, “No, the Hank Mobley song.” And I’m like, huh? [laughs] So now we have both. There was probably no confusion with “Con Alma.” That’s another great story. We had one rehearsal with the band the day before the recording and Chris was there. Bruce Barth wrote this beautiful little intro to the song, and Chris heard it and thought it needed a lyric, which turned out to be the verse. You also had on hand for the recording as well. He added a whole new verse to “Strollin’.” He heard the song and went into the next room and wrote lyrics for him to sing, so that was pretty cool. Then he surprised us with a whistle solo. Did you ever get a chance to work with Oscar Brown? I know he was scheduled to be a part of the recording but passed before the session when down. I sat in with him and Jon, believe it or not, years ago when somebody had hired us all for this in- teresting jazz festival in Michigan. This was years and years ago. So, really, the answer is “no.” We’ve talked, and he came to my gig in San Francisco and sat in. So I guess the answer is “yes.” I really like how you and Nancy King worked together on the record. It had a really nice con- versational tone to it. The record became this layered thing. First and foremost I wanted to do this record with these people. Then the songs came. The conversational tone might come in because she is my friend. It’s not: “Let me sing, then you can sing.” That’s really my hopeful approach to this music anyway. Nancy almost does background vocals sometimes. That’s what she does on a couple of tunes. She has a new album with Fred Hersch on Maxjazz called Live At The Jazz Standard. It was the first time they played together and I don’t think she even knew they were recording it. I was introduced to her music by Stan Dunn, a guy in the business, and I began to track down her stuff. I just loved her interpretations of songs. When we met, I went to up to her at a show and said, “You don’t know me, but my name is continued ... jazzweek.com • May 29, 2006 JazzWeek 13 Artist Q&A: Karrin Allyson (continued)

Karrin Allyson. Why don’t I sell CDs for you while you talk to your people.” So that’s what I did, and that’s how we got to be friends. Did you run into any legal issues in putting these songs together? I’ve heard the Coltrane estate is not down with sharing songwriting credits on his tunes. And in many ways, I don’t blame them. Fortunately, I didn’t have to do all these clearances on my own. It took a village where I did some and my management did some and Chris did some and my producer did some. You can do songs without permission if you want. You might get in trouble, and first and foremost it’s not the right thing to do. You also need to re-title the tune. We re-titled ev- erything because of the new lyrics so the composer gets the credit you’ve agreed on with the new lyricist. That’s so the publishing money is fair on whatever you’ve agreed on. Also, if we didn’t re-title it, when Wayne Shorter’s version of “Footprints” gets played, Chris would get paid even though there were no lyrics in Wayne’s version. It’s the legal right thing to do. You have to get permission. That had to be tricky. The release date was delayed because of clearances. “Con Alma” made it onto the record at the very last moment, and Tadd Dameron’s “Soultrane” didn’t make it in time. We recorded it and mixed and everything. It was a big shame, but we weren’t able to reach the people in time. So we’ll have that for next time. Was there any song that you are afraid of doing this way? Not really afraid of. “Airegin,” which is on the Japanese import, was a real struggle for me. I was really hard vo- cally for me, but I did it. Or I finally did it. [Laughs] We did the solo, but it was really just the melody line – it was just so tough! “But I Was Cool” was a little daunting because I didn’t want to sound like a big dork! Some white girl up there singing. ... Actually I can be that person in the lyrics in my life, so it comes across for me as very sincere. JW
