Emacs and Vi have been battling for text-editor supremacy among programmers for 40 years. By David Auerbach An early Emacs manual cover from 1981. Courtesy of GNU Emacs n a world where both software and hardware frequently become obsolete right I on release, two rival programs can stake a claim to being among the longest-lived applications of all time. Both programs are about to enter their fifth decades. Both programs are text editors, for inputting and editing code, data files, raw HTML Web pages, and anything else. And they are mortal enemies. Their names are Emacs and Vi (styled by programmers as “vi”). These editors are legendary and ancient, no exaggeration. Both date back to at least 1976, making them older than the vast majority of people currently using them. Both programs are text editors, which means they are not WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get)—unlike, say, word processors like Microsoft Word, they do not format your words onscreen. Programming is very different from word processing, and the basic goal of Emacs and Vi—fast editing of source code (and any other text files)—has yet to become obsolete. Both have been in ongoing development for almost 40 years. These two wizened programs are as close to equally matched enemies as any two programs have ever been. If you know a programmer who uses one of them, there’s a good chance that she hates the other. -

Acme: A User Interface for Programmers Rob Pike [email protected]−labs.com ABSTRACT A hybrid of window system, shell, and editor, Acme gives text-oriented applications a clean, expressive, and consistent style of interaction. Tradi tional window systems support interactive client programs and offer libraries of pre-defined operations such as pop-up menus and buttons to promote a consistent user interface among the clients. Acme instead pro vides its clients with a fixed user interface and simple conventions to encourage its uniform use. Clients access the facilities of Acme through a file system interface; Acme is in part a file server that exports device-like files that may be manipulated to access and control the contents of its win dows. Written in a concurrent programming language, Acme is structured as a set of communicating processes that neatly subdivide the various aspects of its tasks: display management, input, file server, and so on. Acme attaches distinct functions to the three mouse buttons: the left selects text; the middle executes textual commands; and the right com bines context search and file opening functions to integrate the various applications and files in the system. Acme works well enough to have developed a community that uses it exclusively. Although Acme discourages the traditional style of interaction based on typescript windowsߞteletypesߞits users find Acmeߣs other ser vices render typescripts obsolete. History and motivation The usual typescript style of interaction with Unix and its relatives is an old one. The typescriptߞan intermingling of textual commands and their outputߞoriginates with the scrolls of paper on teletypes. -

Tiny Tools Gerard J. Holzmann Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology Many programmers like the convenience of integrated development environments (IDEs) when developing code. The best examples are Microsoft’s Visual Studio for Windows and Eclipse for Unix-like systems, which have both been around for many years. You get all the features you need to build and debug software, and lots of other things that you will probably never realize are also there. You can use all these features without having to know very much about what goes on behind the screen. And there’s the rub. If you’re like me, you want to know precisely what goes on behind the screen, and you want to be able to control every bit of it. The IDEs can sometimes feel as if they are taking over every last corner of your computer, leaving you wondering how much bigger your machine would have to be to make things run a little more smoothly. So what follows is for those of us who don’t use IDEs. It’s for the bare metal programmers, who prefer to write code using their own screen editor, and who do everything else with command-line tools. There are no real conveniences that you need to give up to work this way, but what you gain is a better understanding your development environment, and the control to change, extend, or improve it whenever you find better ways to do things. Bare Metal Programming Many developers who write embedded software work in precisely this way. -

Text Editing in UNIX A short introduction to vi, pico, and gedit Copyright 20062009 Stewart Weiss About UNIX editors There are two types of text editors in UNIX: those that run in terminal windows, called text mode editors, and those that are graphical, with menus and mouse pointers. The latter require a windowing system, usually X Windows, to run. If you are remotely logged into UNIX, say through SSH, then you should use a text mode editor. It is possible to use a graphical editor, but it will be much slower to use. I will explain more about that later. 2 CSci 132 Practical UNIX with Perl Text mode editors The three text mode editors of choice in UNIX are vi, emacs, and pico (really nano, to be explained later.) vi is the original editor; it is very fast, easy to use, and available on virtually every UNIX system. The vi commands are the same as those of the sed filter as well as several other common UNIX tools. emacs is a very powerful editor, but it takes more effort to learn how to use it. pico is the easiest editor to learn, and the least powerful. pico was part of the Pine email client; nano is a clone of pico. 3 CSci 132 Practical UNIX with Perl What these slides contain These slides concentrate on vi because it is very fast and always available. An Introduction to ESS + XEmacs for Windows Users of R John Fox∗ McMaster University Revised: 23 January 2005 1WhyUseESS+XEmacs? Emacs is a powerful and widely used programmer’s editor. One of the principal attractions of Emacs is its programmability: Emacs can be adapted to provide customized support for program- ming languages, including such features as delimiter (e.g., parenthesis) matching, syntax highlight- ing, debugging, and version control. The ESS (“Emacs Speaks Statistics”) package provides such customization for several common statistical computing packages and programming environments, including the S family of languages (R and various versions of S-PLUS), SAS, and Stata, among others. The current document introduces the use of ESS with R running under Microsoft Windows. For some Unix/Linux users, Emacs is more a way of life than an editor: It is possible to do almost everything from within Emacs, including, of course, programming, but also writing documents in mark-up languages such as HTML and LATEX; reading and writing email; interacting with the Unix shell; web browsing; and so on. I expect that this kind of generalized use of Emacs will not be attractive to most Windows users, who will prefer to use familiar, and specialized, tools for most of these tasks. There are several versions of the Emacs editor, the two most common of which are GNU Emacs, a product of the Free Software Foundation, and XEmacs, an offshoot of GNU Emacs. Both of these implementations are free and are available for most computing platforms, including Windows. In my opinion, based only on limited experience, XEmacs offers certain advantages to Windows users, such as easier installation, and so I will explain the use of ESS under this version of the Emacs editor.1 As I am writing this, there are several Windows programming editors that have been customized for use with R. -
