NAIDOC WEEK

NAIDOC WEEK (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) was celebrated in Week 10 of Term 2 in 2011. The theme for this year is “The next step is ours”. NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievement of Aboriginal Australia. NAIDOC Week is a celebration of survival of Indigenous Culture and the Indigenous contribution to modern Australia. Activities at Warilla High included a full school assembly to officially open NAIDOC week, with a speech by Koorie student Alira Johns, and a didgeridoo performance by Regan Squires. This was followed by an assembly in the hall where Koori students from the local Primary Schools and the Koori students from Warilla High were addressed by Phil Hirst(School Education Director), Debbie Wray (Regional Aboriginal Community Officer), Glenn Isemonger (Principal of Warilla High) and Ron Ashby (Aboriginal Studies Teacher and Aboriginal Education Coordinator). A highlight of this Assembly was another outstanding performance by Regan Squires on the didgeridoo. His performance was the final stage of his HSC Aboriginal Studies Major Research Project. It was also a joyous occasion to welcome back Sharon Maher (Aboriginal Education Officer) from her extended leave. Mr Isemonger publically thanked Lorelei Wray for her great contributions during Sharon Maher‟s absence. The Primary School students then participated in the traditional Aboriginal game known as “Chopardoo” which were organised by the P.E. staff and the Year 11 Aboriginal Studies class. It was a fun day and finished with a lovely sausage sizzle, beautifully cooked by Year 11 Aboriginal Studies students. On Tuesday 28 June the Koori students did a Mosaic Workshop with Miss Lloyd and on Wednesday 29 June NAIDOC Week Schools Koori Touch Footy Knockout was held at Kanahooka High School. On Friday 1 July we held the Koori Awards Ceremony and the completion of a very successful NAIDOC Week. Congratulations to Lorelei Wray and her helpers for a fantastic effort
