The largest single work by Johannes Brahms is less a requiem for the dead, more an act of consolation for the bereaved. Deeply moving, profound and powerful, its status as one of the greatest monuments of choral music is unchallenged. Balancing serenity and melancholy the final songs written by Richard Strauss are among his most exquisite creations as he bids farewell to life and art.
