New Years Day Resolutions

Dear faithful,

At the start of every new year, it is common for people to take new year’s resolutions. The businessman may resolve to spend more time with his family, the athlete to train more single-mindedly, the teacher to be more demanding and patient of his students. These resolutions may be good, but we should first of all look at basics. Where am I on the great path of life? I was made to know, love and serve God and thus to save my soul, that is my first and greatest duty; how am I doing? Firstly, beware! If you think that you are doing fine (after all, I go to Mass on Sunday) and that you don’t need to examine yourself, that is undoubtedly because you are on the path to hell. It is those who are in the most danger of going to hell who worry the least about it, and it is those who are in the least danger who worry the most. The only reason why people go to hell is because they take little or no care to co-operate with their loving Saviour who died so that they might not go to hell.

Secondly, imagine yourself at death. It will happen, it shouldn’t take too much to imagine. Driving along the 401, huge truck out of control, game over. Gone outside for a breath of air, forgot your keys, -30º C, neighbour’s away, you’re dead. Where will you go? If you are in the state of mortal sin, you will go to hell for all eternity. You know this is not science- fiction. You know that one of these years will be the year of your death.

So, what should be my new year’s resolution? To live as I should like to die. Sounds good but what exactly do you mean. To live as I would like to die means to live in a constant state of friendship with God - in the state of grace. So, I will do the minimum and avoid mortal sin? Not enough. If you desire to do the minimum, you will not manage it because you will just be acting out of fear of hell. You want to sin but you’re just afraid of doing it, but you really do want to sin. Fear of hell is good, but it’s not going to motivate you for a whole year.

You must desire the maximum - you must desire this year to be a . To be a saint means to love God with all you have. This is much easier than doing the minimum. Doing the minimum means constantly wondering ‘how far can I go without going to hell?’ and ruefully eyeing the juicy sin while secretly hating the commandments that stop you from sinning. It means being forced against your will. Being a saint means being motivated by love and love is the easiest motive for doing anything. There was once a boy whose parents could never get him to wash himself and comb his hair and cut his nails. They tried everything, but he didn’t want to do it. Then, one day, they saw him come down the stairs. His hair was in place, his face was shining, and his clothes were clean. He had fallen in love. “If a man give all his substance for love, he shall despise it as nothing.” (Cant. 8, 7)

So, this year, do yourself a favour. Stop dragging your feet. Stop clinging onto your Insta- vanity and rock music and pathetic television programmes. Be a saint. Resolve not to commit any deliberate sins and work out how you’re going to do that. Say your Rosary. Go to Confession regularly. Do an act of charity to your neighbour. Volunteer. Do ten minutes of spiritual reading every day. Then, you will not be worrying when you go for a drive. Father Sherry

1. Interview of Father Pagliarani, SSPX superior general

Father Davide Pagliarani, Superior General of the Society of Saint Pius X, gave an exclusive interview to the Austrian daily newspaper the Salzburger Nachrichten, published on Saturday 15th December 2018. He explains what every Catholic expects from the : the faithful transmission of the Deposit of Faith, which is the adherence of the intelligence to Divine Revelation and not an individual subjective experience. Unfortunately, recent Roman documents, such as the Exhortation Amoris lætitia, favour a subjectivism that no longer recognises a universally valid truth, which causes great confusion, and shatters the Church’s missionary thrust towards other religions.

The founder of the Society of Saint Pius X, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, was excommunicated in 1988 because he had ordained four bishops without permission. In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI lifted these excommunications. What does that signify for you? For us, this did not change anything, because we always considered these excommunications as baseless. However, it encouraged certain people to join us, who until then had not dared. It has also facilitated our relations with some bishops and a section of the clergy, especially with young priests.

Francis has also made concessions. What more are you waiting for? We are waiting for what every Catholic asks of the Church at baptism: Faith. Divine Revelation has now ended and it is the duty of the Pope to transmit faithfully the Deposit of Faith. The Pope must therefore put an end to the terrible crisis that has shaken the Church for the last 50 years. This crisis was triggered by a new conception of the faith, centred on the subjective experience of each individual: it is thought that each individual is solely responsible for his faith and can freely opt for any religion, without distinction between error and truth. But this contradicts objective divine law.

To what extent can the Society of Saint Pius X in turn show itself conciliatory towards the Pope? The Priestly Society of Saint Pius X is deeply attached to the Successor of Peter, even when it opposes the errors of the Second Vatican Council. However, we are deeply distraught by a fundamental characteristic of the current pontificate: a completely new application of the concept of mercy. It is reduced to a panacea for all sins, without pushing for a true conversion, the transformation of the soul by grace, mortification and prayer. In his post-synodal Apostolic Exhortation Amoris lætitia, the Pope gives all Christians, the possibility to decide case by case, according to their personal conscience, the questions of morality in marriage. This totally contradicts the necessary and clear orientation given by God’s law. We see here an echo of Luther’s spirituality: a Christianity without the need for moral renewal, a subjectivism that no longer recognises any universally valid truth.

This has caused deep confusion among the faithful and the clergy. Every man is in search of truth. But for this he needs the direction of the priest, just as a pupil needs the direction of a teacher.

What did the Luther Year 2017 produce in this regard? Since the sixteenth century, the has addressed Protestants to convert them and to bring them back to the true Church. The Luther Year did not serve this primary purpose of the return of the Protestants. Quite the opposite, they have been confirmed in their error. The reason is, since the Second Vatican Council, the Church thinks that every man can find God in his religion. It is a premise that reduces the faith to a personal and inner experience, since it is no longer the adherence of the intelligence to Divine Revelation.

There are also many people in other religions who live morally well, in their heart and conscience. Will God recognise their merits? The Church is essentially missionary. Our Lord Jesus Christ said: “I am the way, the truth and the life”. It is only through him that mankind will be saved. He founded only one Church, which is the Roman Catholic Church. This theological truth must be proclaimed, as well as the rectitude of morality and the splendour of the Traditional Mass in the Tridentine Rite. The sincere search for truth in other religions is not sufficient to yield truth. We must therefore help these souls save themselves. If a soul can be saved outside the Catholic Church, it is despite the error in which it finds itself, and not thanks to it, and in any case, it is saved by Jesus Christ alone.

Your predecessor, Bernard Fellay, labelled the Jews, Freemasons and Modernists as enemies of the Church. Do the Jews also have to convert to the Catholic Church, as you say for Protestants? Modernism is one of the most dangerous errors. Until the Second Vatican Council, the Church asked all priests to take the anti-modernist oath, which I have also taken. As for Judaism, it would be an unforgivable sin to exclude the Jewish people from the assets and the treasures of the Catholic Church. The salvific mission of the Church is universal, and she cannot leave out any people.

You reject the essential documents of the Second Vatican Council, such as those on religious liberty and ecumenism. Is it just a different interpretation, or do you completely reject these texts of the Council? The Second Vatican Council declared itself as a purely pastoral Council. However, major dogmatic decisions, like those you mentioned, were made. This led to a complete transformation of the faith. Pope Benedict XVI considered that the differences between and the Priestly Society of Saint Pius X were a problem of interpretation of the texts of the Council.

It was enough to reflect upon these texts for an agreement to be possible. However, that is not our position. The Society of Saint Pius X rejects, from the Second Vatican Council, all that is not in agreement with Catholic Tradition. The Pope should declare the decree on religious liberty erroneous and correct it accordingly. We are convinced that one day a Pope will do just that, and return to the pure doctrine that was the reference before this Council. The questions of religious liberty, ecumenism and the divine constitution of the Church were all dealt with by prior to the Second Vatican Council. It suffices to revive their teachings. It is inconceivable that the Church was mistaken for two millennia and that she found the truth about these questions only during the years of the Council, between 1962 and 1965.

Is it a weight on your conscience that, from Rome’s point of view, you are in a state of schism with the Church? In reality, Rome does not consider us schismatics, but rather as “irregular”. In any case, if I did not have the certitude of working in the Roman Catholic Church and working for it, I would leave the Society immediately.

2. At last, some good news!

Note: As we know, the Family is under attack, especially within in the Western World, and at home here in . But there are some exceptions, in particular in Poland and Hungary, who recently launched pro-family policies, as reported in the article from LifeSiteNews here below. There is an urgent need to pray for families, as they are the cornerstones of Christian society. That is why, we invite our readers to join with the children who are members of the Eucharistic Crusade, who will specially pray for Catholic Families during this Month of January.

Hungary plans to encourage, support ‘large, stable families’

BUDAPEST, Hungary, October 31, 2018 (LifeSiteNews) ― The Hungarian government wants to reverse its own demographic decline the old fashioned way: by making it easier for the nation’s own citizens to have bigger families.

To this end, Prime Minister Victor Orbán’s government is launching a formal consultation with Hungarians to elicit their ideas on how the state can give more effective support to families. Survey forms will be sent to an estimated 8 million households over the next month. Parliamentary State Secretary Csaba Dömötör says that subjects to be discussed will include support for young married couples, ways to encourage couples to have more children, and flexible employment hours for working mothers.

According to the pro-Orbán “About Hungary” website, Hungary’s demographic policy – which eschews mass migration in favour of homegrown babies – has already had a strengthening effect on the nation’s families:

“Since 2010, when Prime Minister Orbán’s government took office, Hungary’s demographic policy has shown real results: by 2017, abortion numbers had dropped by more than a third, from 40,449 to 28,500, divorces saw a marked decline (from 23,873 in 2010 to 18,600 in 2017), and the number of marriages had risen by some 42 percent.” There were 35,520 Hungarian marriages in 2010 and 50,600 in 2017.

“About Hungary” also reported that since Orbán’s election, 83,000 Hungarian families have received subsidies for buying homes, saved on their taxes, and discovered 50 percent more daycare places.

Hungarian university student Alexander Masir, 22, told LifeSiteNews that Orbán’s policies have indeed had an effect on the nation.

“I think his reforms are a moderate success,” he said. “The birth rate is growing, and his tax reform means that families with four or more children pay virtually no income tax or other contributions.”

Masir, who is studying at Glasgow University, says that the policies have also helped his own family.

“My family, although smaller, also benefits from recent legislation, receiving support for my little brother mainly.”

Orbán’s policies are at odds with those of the European Union, which emphasize porous borders and mass migration instead of national identities. In July Orbán gave a speech in which he offered five politically incorrect tenets for “building up” Central

European countries, beginning with a defense of European Christian cultures and the traditional family.

“The first is that every European country has the right to defend its Christian culture, and the right to reject the ideology of multiculturalism,” he said.

“Our second tenet is that every country has the right to defend the traditional family model and is entitled to assert that every child has the right to a mother and a father,” he continued. “The third Central European tenet is that every Central European country has the right to defend the nationally strategic economic sectors and markets which are of crucial importance to it.”

“The fourth tenet is that every country has the right to defend its borders, and it has the right to reject immigration.”

“And the fifth tenet is that every European country has the right to insist on the principle of one nation, one vote on the most important issues, and that this right must not be denied in the European Union. In other words, we Central Europeans claim that there is life beyond globalism, which is not the only path. Central Europe’s path is the path of an alliance of free nations,” Orbán concluded.

Orbán’s ideas are also a significant departure from previous Hungarian governments, Masir told LifeSiteNews.

“Earlier governments, notably before 2010, emphasised individual autonomy instead of the reasonable duty of contributing to the community that raised us,” the Kecskemét native said. “There was nothing at all said about the tens of thousands of young people moving abroad to work and villages and the countryside being depopulated.”

“Alongside the important reforms, the most recent major one being CSOK, a benefit scheme for building or acquiring a first home for new families, the youth are invited to stay in the country, to settle down, and to have large, stable families,” he continued. “It's being made clear that the workplace is only one of the many options available to women. However, there was also a response to the more Western-style urban model certain families are following, and so the government also started building many new nurseries.”

Meanwhile, Masir believes that Orbán has not yet turned the demographic tide.

“I’d say the program gestures in the right direction,” the student said. “However, it so far has failed to turn around the demographic loss [although] there is an improvement

in that field as well. They do a lot for large families, both in poverty and the middle class; however, there is less of a success with getting young professionals to have their first or second child.”

If consulted on how to make Hungary even more family friendly, Masir would suggest that the government work more closely with the Catholic Church.

“There is still an obvious link that's being neglected between faith and families,” he said. “The largest and healthiest families in my classes were all practicing Christians, and most of those Catholic; I would advise him to integrate the government's action with that of the Church.”

3. Book of the Month

Frequent Confession by Dom Benedict Baur, O.S.B.

This book is a treasure of practical advice for those who wish to make more fruitful use of the sacrament. Abbot Baur recommends the formulation of a specific, practical purpose of amendment. A concrete resolution focusing on overcoming even a single sinful habit and the development of a particular virtue is more helpful for spiritual growth than an entire laundry list of faults.

Above all, frequent use of the sacrament of confession is a constant spur to our spiritual growth. It aids us in keeping an active will and firm intention to seek out the root causes of sin.

Frequent Confession is not only enjoyable spiritual reading, it is a wonderful way to renew your devotion to this great sacrament and rediscover one of the church’s most effective means for spiritual growth.

Warning from SSPX: The original German edition of Fr. Benedict Baur’s book was published in 1945, and it was followed by an English translation in 1959. The reprint that is now available in our bookstores is from Scepter publishers, which is the publishing arm of Opus Dei. This explains why the publisher added a long introduction, written by a layman member of Opus Dei. Such introduction is not traditional, and thus should be skipped by our readers, thus rather go straight to the original text of Fr. Baur, starting page 39. Fr. Dominique Boulet
