Tidewater Chapter of the American Guild of Organists from the Dean ....

Dear Friends,

Spring is here! For most of us, we are deep into our Lenten journey looking ahead to Holy Week and Easter. Outside of our church jobs, we may be busy with spring recitals, end of the year ac- tivities, and planning our summer travels.

Our AGO Board has been hard at work planning next season. If you have any ideas that you would like to Program Committee to consider, please contact Deborah Carr. Meanwhile, we are looking forward to our Organ Swell series, which is a wonderful example of collaboration that is quite unique to our Chapter. Please attend as many of these concerts as possible. Not only will you hear great and unique music rarely heard, you will be supporting our local organists and symphony players.

Finally, it is not too late to sign up for our Mid-Atlantic Regional Convention in New Jersey. If you have never been to a convention, these gatherings are wonderful opportunities to recharge our batteries, meet fellow colleagues, and get fresh ideas to bring home. More information can be found at www.agosouthjersey2019.org

Best wishes,

TheVirginia Arts Festival presents

in partnership with The Tidewater Chapter of the American Guild of Organists Ken Cowan

Biography Ken Cowan is one of North America’s finest concert organists. Praised for his dazzling artistry, impeccable technique and imaginative programming by audiences and critics alike, he maintains a rigorous performing schedule which takes him to major concert venues and churches in America, Cana- da, Europe, and Asia.

Recent feature performances have included appearances at Seger- strom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa California, Philadelphia’s Verizon Hall, Spivey Hall, and Walt Disney Concert Hall, as well as concerts in Ger- many and Korea. In addition, Mr. Cowan has been a featured artist in re- cent years at the national conventions of the American Guild of Organists held in Los Angeles and Minneapolis, has performed at many regional conventions of the AGO, and has been featured at several con- ventions of the Organ Historical Society and the Royal Canadian College of Organists.

Ken received the Master’s degree and Artist Diploma from the Yale School of Music/Institute of Sacred Music, studying organ with Thomas Murray. Prior to attending Yale, he graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree from the Curtis Institute of Music in Phil- adelphia where he studied with John Weaver. His major teacher during high school years was James Bigham, Organist/Choirmaster at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, in Buffalo, NY, which is not far from his hometown Thorold, Ontario, Canada.

In 2012 Mr. Cowan joined the keyboard faculty of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University as Associate Professor and head of the organ program. Previous positions have included Associate Professor of Organ at Westminster Choir College of Rider Uni- versity in Princeton, NJ, where he was awarded the 2008 Rider University Distinguished Teaching Award, and Associate Organist and Artist in Residence at Saint Bartholomew’s Church in New York City.

One of North America’s finest concert organists, Ken Cowan is praised for his dazzling artistry, impeccable technique and imaginative programming by audiences and critics alike. Expect a thrilling program from this extraordinary artist, as he performs on the newly refurbished organ at Norfolk’s historic Christ & St. Luke’s Church. “Utterly transfixing. He played exquisitely…imaginatively and seamlessly” (The Washington Blade).
