Introduction A Sociological Approach to New Deal Cinema The Problem For twenty five years I’ve had a movie on my mind…. Let me begin with my experience of the problem. A late 20th century movie house in Cambridge, sitting in the balcony. I’d seen Hollywood westerns. I knew what to expect. And those expectations left me entirely unprepared for the projections about to unwind. Fort Apache1 (1948) is told from a variety of points of view. What struck me at the time, however, was the voice its director, John Ford, gave the Apache. They weren’t represented as children. They weren’t represented as savages. Instead, they were an aggrieved people battling the twin forces of colonization and corruption. And, as John Wayne’s Captain York argues throughout most of the film, the Apache were in the right. But more startling than the sympathetic representation of the Apache, the film’s final scene has Captain York con- sciously whitewashing the genocidal image of American imperialism the pre- vious scenes had so convincingly evoked. After spending the first two acts of the film speaking to American power for the Apache, in the final shot Captain York leads his cavalry to hunt down Cochise. York turns his dead, imperious commander, Colonel Thursday (Henry Fonda), into a falsified legend, and, more important, a martyr for American nationalism. Anticipating the final lines of Ford’s later film, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence (1962), York would have the press conceal reality, and for the sake of the nation, “print the legend.” Fort Apache recognizes the power of propaganda, explains its uses and operation, and, yet, at the same time, seems to participate in the very pro- cess it critiques. In fact, I couldn’t understand the film’s conclusion. But my mystification provoked a series of questions that have since driven my research: Was Fort Apache a critique of imperialism? An endorsement? What made York shift identities at the end, becoming the very thing he’d despised through- out the picture? And how would its original audience understand that internal deconstruction? The films of the 1930s and 1940s are all too familiar to twenty-first century audiences. The commercialization of certain styles (think of marketed imagery from Casablanca (1943) or film noir), the popularity of certain directors from the period (Hitchcock, Welles, Kazan), and the influence of these commodified tropes upon contemporary forms of entertainment, all lead to a situation in which the twenty first century viewer understands early twentieth century film through contemporary forms of thought and experience. While I do not mean to denigrate the commercial afterlife of early cinema, nor the identity tropes its marketing produces, such an anachronistic viewpoint conceals the more diffi- cult and contradictory moments in individual films. In order to break the spell of contemporary experience, this study acknowledges the fundamental estrangement between the society and practices of the twenty-first century, and the society and practices that gave birth to early sound cinema. But to complete the circuit from familiarity to estrangement to understanding, I argue that the cinematic product, like any cultural artifact, can be situated within the field of cultural, historical, and social forces that gave it original force. In other words, by understanding Fort Apache as a discursive contes- tant fighting for position in the field of its times, its final scenes begin to make sense.

    Anita Loos: A Hollywood legend with roots in the small Siskiyou County town of Etna By Jon Lewis The gravestone is rather unassuming, as is its location in the Etna Cemetery. What’s not unassuming, however, is the story of the diminutive woman whose fi nal resting place is in Siskiyou County’s Scott Valley. Anita Loos, who stood an inch short of fi ve feet and weighed in at 90 pounds, was a giant in early 20th- century Hollywood and Broadway. In a career spanning 60 years, she wrote some 200 screenplays and played a key role in advancing the acting careers of Douglas Fairbanks, Jean Harlow and Audrey Hepburn. She’s best known for “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” a best-selling comic novel published in 1925 that introduced the world to Lorelei Lee, a gold-digging fl apper. The fi rst edition of the book sold out overnight and it was ultimately printed in 13 diff erent languages in some 85 editions. It garnered praise from literary stalwarts William Faulkner and Aldous Huxley while Edith Horton called it “the great American novel.” The infl uential director D.W.     Philip Leers Behind the Great Man Female Screenwriters and Collaborative Authorship in Early Hollywood The predominance of the auteur theory in cinema studies has been a double-edged sword, each benefit attended by a disadvantage. While it mitigated the primacy of the Hollywood system, it posited in its place the equally problematic figure of the director as the sole source of meaning-making in filmmaking. While it has brought to light a worthy list of previously unappreciated films and directors, it has also been justly criticized for reinforcing the centrality of white, male directors, and exacerbating the marginalization of other voices. And while it has provided an invaluable identificatory and analytic framework for film theorists, it has also fostered an essentialist, and often ahistorical, conception of film authorship. The cult of the male director, for instance, has obscured the remarkable contributions of female screenwriters to the early cinema. Throughout the silent era, and into the thirties, a majority of the screen’s foremost scenarists were women, with luminaries like Alice Guy Blache, Anita Loos, Elinor Glyn, Lois Weber, Francis Marion, Beulah Marie Dix, June Mathis, Jeanie MacPherson, Marion Fairfax, and Jane Murfin achieving a considerable measure of influence within the industry and celebrity without. These screenwriters constituted a network of powerful women who outnumbered their male counterparts ten to one, a ratio that was perhaps only possible in the infancy of the cinema, when filmmaking practice had not yet been consolidated under the patriarchal hierarchy of the Hollywood system. Certainly, the masculinist slant of Hollywood’s “Golden Age” and its subsequent usurping of the public interest served to efface the impact of these women on the film industry, but their prominence at a time when the narrative language of the cinema was taking shape cannot be ignored.

The original “blond bombshell,” her fresh, sultry look was one that drove men wild and women to peroxide. By her own admission, her acting ability was somewhat lacking. “I’m the worst actress that was ever in pictures,” she had said, and more than once. To her legions of fans, it didn’t matter. She had an indefinable “it” quality that drew people to her like a magnet. Her assessment of her own acting ability was too extreme—she wasn’t the worst actress who ever lived. She wasn’t the best, either. She was an astute observer, though, and as she made a study of her co-stars, her performances did improve over time. In some of her later films, like Wife vs. Secretary and Libeled Lady (two of my favorites) she was quite good—and anything she lacked in acting ability she made up for in sex appeal. She was pretty, yes, but more than that, she was overtly and brazenly sexual. It was well known, for example, that she never wore underwear, which was, at times, shockingly obvious when she would walk on the set wearing diaphanous gowns. David Stenn, in his book Bombshell: The Life and Death of Jean Harlow, writes of one particularly memorable incident that occurred on the set of the film Red Headed Woman: “Most astounding to MGM crews was Harlow’s attitude toward her body. Told by Jack Conway [the director] to remove her jacket in a scene, she obeyed—and wore nothing underneath…Visitors on the set scarcely believed their eyes…but the resulting commotion puzzled Harlow.

    A Virtuous Vamp By Jennifer Ann Redmond “Film Daily” called it a “humdinger.” They crowed “[j]ust get ‘em in. That’s all. Constance Talmadge and the picture will do all the rest . .”1 For a lot of other pictures this would be typical hyper- bole, but not “A Virtuous Vamp.” This film had it all: women in the workplace, youth culture, racy night- clubs, flirtatious flappers . in short, a time capsule of a world on the verge of the Jazz Age, filled with everything for which the era would forever be remembered. Based on the 1909 play “The Bachelor” by popular playwright Clyde Fitch, it offered Constance Talmadge as Gwendolyn Armitage, the lovely daughter of one of the finest families out of England. Unfortunately, after the San Francisco disaster of 1906, they lost everything . and so, as soon as she’s grown, she sets out for work to support her family, under the name Nellie Jones.
