FALL HOSPITALITY REPORT (2015) MANHATTAN FALL HOSPITALITY REPORT MANHATTAN 2015 1 | P a g e FALL HOSPITALITY REPORT (2015) MANHATTAN EXECUTIVE SUMMARY According to the Starr report, Manhattan’s hotel sector has been growing by over 4.0 % since 2010 both by ADR and number of rooms. The demand still far exceeds supply especially for 5 star brands. Early in the hotel recovery in 2011, three star brands grew in number of rooms and ADR initially. As the recovery went into full swing by late 2013, four and five star hotel development continued to outpace three star hotel growth. Global investors are seeking five star hotel product in Manhattan and at $1.0 million up to $2.0 million per key. For instance, Chinese investors bought the Waldorf Astoria and the Baccarat Hotels both at substantially above $1.0 million per key. Manhattan is one of the best hotel markets in the world between growing tourism and inexpensive accommodations compared to other global gateway cities like London, Paris, Moscow, Hong Kong, etc. Any established global hotel brand also requires a presence in Manhattan. In 2014 alone, 4,348 keys were added to Manhattan’s existing 108,592 rooms. Currently, another 14,272 rooms are under construction in the city and about 4000 keys (1/3) are for boutique hotels. As of July 2015, the Manhattan market has approximately 118,000 keys. They are segmented as follows: Currently, there is a 4.0% annual compounded growth rate. Despite this growth, demand for hotel rooms from tourism, conventions, cultural events, and corporate use continues to grow as Manhattan is one of the most desirable locations for all of the above uses especially tourism from Asia and Europe. -

DEAD SEA SCROLLS: LIFE AND FAITH IN BIBLICAL TIMES At Discovery Times Square, New York City (A Christian Perspective) Gordon Franz Introduction The fantastic Dead Sea Scrolls: Life and Faith in Biblical Times exhibition at the Discovery Times Square building in New York City is about more than just the Dead Sea Scrolls; it is about daily life in the Biblical world. The subtitle – “Life and Faith in Biblical Times” – says it all. The exhibition runs until April 15, 2012, in New York City, and then, in May 2012, it will be at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, where it will run for another five months. The Bible is more than just another book with black (and sometimes red) letters on a page. The Bible is about real people, in real places, experiencing real events in history. Sometimes, because of our twenty-first century Western mindset and experiences, it is difficult to imagine how people lived in Biblical times. For example, the LORD metaphorically searched Jerusalem with lamps (Zeph. 1:12). When we think of a lamp, we think of a stand with a shade and a socket with an electric light bulb that illuminates when a switch is flipped. In the Biblical world there was no electricity, only olive oil and a wick to light the oil lamp. This exhibition will give you an idea of what those lamps actually looked like. Through the exhibition you will get a glimpse into the material culture of the Biblical world and add a third dimension to your Bible study! You will also be able to experience “Oh, now I see [literally] what the Bible is talking about” moments! As an archaeologist and a Bible teacher, I was fascinated by the whole exhibition, which is on loan from the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA). -

The company was created by combining the legacy firms of Israel Berger and Associates, LLC (IBA) and Viridian Energy & Environmental, LLC. Formed in 1994, IBA established an exterior wall consulting practice providing niche services to real estate owners, owner representatives and architects. Services were provided for new construction as well as investigation, repositioning, repair, and restoration of existing buildings. Later expansion included roofing as well as waterproofing consulting, encompassing the entire building envelope. IBA developed into an industry-leading resource. Viridian Energy & Environmental was established in 2006, providing consulting services to assist building owners and managers in energy efficiency, sustainability and LEED certifications. Energy modeling expertise set Viridian apart from other consultants offering more standardized service and support. In 2011, IBA and Viridian Energy & Environmental merged their specialized service offerings to form Vidaris. As building envelope designs and mechanical systems were becoming more complex, the two companies recognized that it was an opportunity, more so a necessity, for them to be able to provide a holistic approach to these closely related disciplines for their clients. Deep technical knowledge, a long proven track record, reputation, and a sophisticated analytical approach would allow Vidaris to provide a level of service second to none.
