By Jeff Doner

Tim and Brenda Schmidt’s third annual Cruise for the Cure went to a whole other level this year, raising an incredible $95,000 for Prostate Cancer Canada and Shriners Children’s Hospital. The event saw roughly 1,200 cars of all models, colours, sizes and builds roll through the gates, with thou- sands of spectators coming by to get a glance. “My first year I was so green at doing a car show, but I was so amazed that we raised $50,000, so I did something right my first year,” Tim said. “With saying that, this is where it’s going and I’m hoping that it’s going to be one of the largest car events in Ontario.” Colleen Swider, one of the event organizers, is in her second year working with the event and said he is amazed by its growth. “It’s exponentially growing,” she said. “It’s wonderful to see, because the community of car enthusiasts have really embraced this. Tim has provided an amazing venue and amazing opportunity for this and it’s nice to see so many people come on board.” However, the event wasn’t just a car show, it also included a children’s mini carnival, a petting zoo with pony rides, food, games, live music from Alan Frew of Glass Tiger, visits from some of the current Grey Cup champion and also a rare glimpse of Tim’s own car collection. “Just being one of those car enthusiast kind of guys, I just wanted to do my own car show,” Tim explained. “It was something I’ve always wanted to do and then it came to me after about 10 years after my brother passed away, I decided, ‘let’s do a car show for my brother and my dad and we’ll just have a happy day for the guys that are up there.’” With literally something for everyone, the event has grown in leaps and bounds since its inception three years ago. First they raised $50,000, then last year it was up to $70,000. This year, Tim said his ultimate goal was to hit the $100,000 plateau. “If I can get $100,000 – $50,000 for prostate cancer and $50,000 for the Shriners Children’s Hospital, boy I’ll be a happy camper,” he said. Tim and Brenda also explained why they chose to benefit Prostate Cancer Canada and Shrines Chil- dren’s Hospital. “I chose prostate cancer because one of every seven guys will connect with that disease,” Tim said. “That’s the leading killer for men and a lot of my buddies are men and we’re all car guys, so I figured I would do it for the car guys.” A big car enthusiast himself, Tim has 25 cars of his own, including the first one he bought as a collector in 1995 – a 1955 Chev. Tim said he is happy to show off his collection to help a good cause and said it’s the support from the public that keeps the event going strong. “The reaction I get from people is, ‘thank-you Tim for opening your doors to the public.’ They are just amazed when they come and they want to come back. Through word of mouth, we’re just getting larger and larger,” he said. “People are loving it and it makes me feel good. To see people smile, it’s just the best thing. We’ve all lost a lot of loved ones and this is one of the reasons why I do this. Get together, cry a little bit and have some fun.” For more information visit Tim and Brenda’s website at www.timandbrendasplace.com.

Kitchen returns to his roots with ultimate prize

By JEFF DONER

It has been a while since Stanley Cup champion Mike Kitchen has played hockey in Schomberg, but friends, family and fans made sure to give him the prop- er greeting when he came back carrying the Stanley Cup last weekend. Roughly a month after the Chicago Blackhawks shocking game six win over the Boston Bruins, Kitchen said decid- ing what to do with his day with the Cup was an easy decision. “I’m glad we could take the Cup there. It was one thing that was really impor- tant to me, because I have a lot of fond memories of minor hockey in Schomberg. That’s where it all started. We would get more ice time there and Brian Jackson would just say, ‘just go on out. Don’t wor- ry about it guys.’” It was those years playing minor hockey in Schomberg that started off his hockey career. “I had a lot of great volunteer coaches all through minor that all gave up their time to coach us and travel all over the country to games,” he said. “We were for- tunate to be in Schomberg at that time. It wasn’t a big population, but we won a lot of championships at that time in Schomberg.” The community turned out Sunday to welcome Mike Kitchen and the Stanley Cup to Schomberg. NHLer Nick Boynton brought the Cup Photos by Je Doner to Nobleton a few years back; Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Ruth- erford to Beeton in 2006; the recently traded Dan Carcillo just two weeks ago to King City and trampolinist Rosie Ma- cLennan brought home Canada’s only gold medal from the 2012 Olympic Sum- mer games. “It has produced a lot of athletes and I’ve got to give credit,” he said. “Com- ing up through school I had some phys ed teachers that would really teach the fundamentals in every sport, whether it was in gymnastics, trampoline, track and fi eld or any sport. “I played rugby in King City and we won the Ontario championships. I was very fortunate to have some really good coaches. And that’s important to have good coaches that can relate to young kids, get their point across and teach them about the game.” After his minor hockey days he went to play Metro Junior B for the Aurora Ti- gers at the age of 15. Then in 1974 he was then drafted by the in the fi rst round, where he played for three years and won the Memorial Cup in 1975. Soon after in 1976, “Kitch” was mak- ing a name for himself and was drafted by the now defunct Kansas City Scouts.

By Mark Pavilons

A great turnout for the third annual Mayor’s Golf Tournament will see a nice injection of funding to community projects. The sold-out event drew 150 golfers to Cardinal last week, despite the hot temperatures. The event raised a total of $104,850. According to Mayor Steve Pellegrini, funds raised go back into the commu- nity, into the coffers of Parks, Recre- ation and Culture Department at the Township. In the past three years, the tournament has seen roughly $250,000 given back to King Township. “It’s a humbling experience,” Pel- legrini said, adding these funds stay in the community. The Township is looking at creating AURORAN REFERENCE 14 an AstroTurf soccer fi eld with lights and working with King United Soccer WEEK OF JULY 24, 2013 to make it happen.
