Xavier Baró escolta i comenta un dels grans discos de la Incredible String Band, el llegendari grup escocès que va aconseguir que, per a molts joves, "el món canviés de color". The Incredible String Band, Liquid Acrobat as Regards the Air (Island, 1971) "El palo que te da la belleza" (Smash, Manifiesto del borde) Per Xavier Baró Vaig conèixer la Incredible String Band per un amic amb qui tocàvem ja fa temps. Érem un duo folk que no en sabíem res, de l'ofici; només tocàvem per gust i perquè volíem aprendre. L'amic, es deia Ramon, un dia va vindre a casa amb The 5000 Spirits of the Lyers of the Onion (Elektra, 1967), el segon disc de la banda, i el món, de sobte, va canviar de color. Un temps després em vaig comprar aquest, Liquid Acrobat as Regards the Air. L'efecte que em va produir va ser el mateix. Curiosament, a més d'agradar-me molt la música que feien, em feia sentir unes sensacions molt boniques. Va ser la primera vegada que vaig pensar que amb les cançons es poden obrir portes secretes i entrar-hi a dintre. Ells, Mike Heron, Robin Williamson, Clive Palmer, Christine McKechnie (Likky), Rose Simpson i Malcolm Le Maistre, no tenien ni un bri de cinisme a la rialla. Feien música plena de bellesa, amb naturalitat, perquè hi creien. Preferien l'èxtasi de la visió de l'amplitud de la natura que la paranoia urbana; asseure's vora un estany contemplant els cignes abans del xerric de la indústria discogràfica. Estudiaven textos antics, llegien poesia, seguien la tradició i hi injectaven la fantasia. Amb el folk com a pal de paller, fortament lligats a la seva tradició local, els ISB hi incorporen, com incrustacions bellament treballades amb les mans, músiques nord-africanes, hindús, celtes, nord-americanes, psalms cristians. Les seves lletres són versos fets de paraules poètiques i pensaments interessants extrets de filosofies orientals, celtes i cristianes. Han viatjat, i del viatge han portat les experiències, coneixements musicals i instruments que han cristal·litzat en les cançons i els conceptes de meravelles com The 5000 Spirits of the Lyers of the Onion; Wee Tam and The Big Huge (Elektra, 1968) o The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter (Elecktra, 1968). Si el seu primer disc era una fotografia del folk rural que tocaven a Edimburg, al segon ja es van deixar portar per la fantasia, deixant l'empremta que donaria identitat al grup i a dos dels compositors i intèrprets més brillants i imaginatius de la música popular: Robin Williamson i Mike Heron . Però ara som a 1971. L'era de la fantasia comença a tornar a casa amb la carrossa de les cançons buida. Han canviat de discogràfica. De l'enrotllada Elektra passen a la cool Island. També els ha abandonat el seu productor i descobridor, Joe Boyd, que s'ha cansat del negoci, i Rose Simpson, la riallera baixista, parella de Mike Heron, que se n'ha anat a tenir un nen i a descansar de tantes pujades i baixades. Al seu lloc ha entrat Malcolm LeMaistre, ballarí, que ja havia participat a la bonica pel·lícula Be Blad for the Song Has No Ending i al disc-espectacle U (Elektra, 1970), que aporta algunes cançons molt boniques. Davant els canvis i la pèrdua de la innocència que ja s'olora, Robin, Mike, Likky i Malcolm fan pinya i donen el millor de si mateixos. Fent honor al seu nom, toquen més de vint instruments diferents en un desplegament d'imaginació i fantasia al servei d'unes excel·lents cançons en les quals tots col·laboren sense estalviar res. Són un grup de quatre personalitats; cadascun, solista quan li toca, i els quatre junts, un sol cos i una sola ànima, sempre. The Incredible String Band (Glen Row, 1971) El disc comença amb ?Talking of the End?, una extraordinària minisimfonia escrita per Robin Williamson que comença com un cant sufí, reflexionant sobre la vida davant el fred no-res: ?Val més que comencis a viure abans no comencis a morir?. La segona part s'inicia amb el ritme primitiu d'uns bongos que ressonen pel silenci del primer dia. Llavors entra el sitar, tocat magníficament per un inspirat Mike Heron, exhalant melodia i sensibilitat, convertint la cançó en una raga de matinada. És un dels moments més bonics del disc. ?Dear Old Battlefield?, de Robin Williamson. El món és un camp de batalla on et trobes amb els amics i amants. ?La mort és irreal?, ens diu. El temps passa de pressa i lent alhora. ?Quan estava a punt d'adormir-me, apareix l'home màgic i em treu del bosc on m'havia perdut.? ?Cosmic Boy?, la cançó de la Likky, la noia que tocava l'orgue, els bongos, feia veus de fada i quan s'animava ballava una jiga. La noia que poc temps després va desaparèixer al desert i ja no se n'ha sabut res més. Una cançó que de vegades et sembla lleugera i de vegades et posa la pell de gallina... És aquesta veu com del més enllà que té la Likky, que et sembla que canta, tota sola, en un llindar del bosc a prop d'un llac, com una ànima perduda i molt, molt sola. Acompanyada només pel piano de Heron. ?Worlds They Rise and Fall?, de Mike Heron, és una altra de les delicadeses del disc, una cançó d'amor a una fada que balla sota les estrelles. Tres minuts i vint segons de soledat i tristesa que et deixen mut. Són els ISB de quan eren només un duo. Robin i Mike creant emoció pura. 'Mentre el bard et canta, jo només puc admirar-te.' ?Evolution Rag?. Va, 'nem a cantar i ballar! Això és una festeta dels homes-peix i els homes-mico en una clariana d'un bosc encantat. Concert per a kazoos, orgue igualment encantat i mandolina. Els peus se me n'hi van! ?Painted Chariot". Una altra cançó misteriosa de Mike Heron. Què és aquesta carrossa pintada? I aquests cants gregorians que diuen que no et creguis el conductor, engolits per una guitarra elèctrica salvatge i un orgue de guerra? ?Adam and Eve?. La història d'Adam i Eva contada a ritme de reggae, l'any 1971! ?Red Hair?. Les cançons de Heron, en aquest disc, estan impregnades de soledat. La veu, en aquesta cançó d'amor a una noia de cabell roig, és de les més desolades que s'han escoltat mai. Cantant amb tot el cor, enviant el cant i l'alè als cels més grans, aquesta serenata de dos minuts torna a deixar-te enlluernat de llàgrimes. ?Here Till Her Is There?, un poema cantat per Robin i Likky, que comença a capel·la: 'On aniràs quan els dies s'escurcin i el vent sigui fred?'. Llavors, acompanyada per un trio de flautes, entra la Likky, sempre tendra i entristida: 'On aniràs quan els dies devorin els dies?'. I acaba amb les https://www.enderrock.cat/noticia/13676/incredible-string-band Pagina 2 de 3 flautes tocant una curta peça que podria haver estat interpretada en un saló del segle XVIII. ?Tree?. Heron recupera aquesta cançó inclosa al primer disc, dedicada a un arbre de quan era nen, a qui li conta tot. És una dolça cançó que, ara que el temps ha cobert els dies d'infantesa, sona melangiosa, com un dels Cants d'innocència de William Blake. El nen vora un riu i el món obrint la seva boca gegantina per a devorar-lo. ?Medley: Jigs and Reels?. És una col·lecció de balls tradicionals escocesos, un moment per a la festa. Sense electricitat, una foguera, un violí i... a ballar! ?Darling Belle?. Deia Robin Williamson que va escriure aquesta cançó després de somiar-la en un hotel d'Amsterdam. Si voleu conèixer tota la fantasmagoria de la Incredible, què és un bard, com es canta un conte, escolteu aquesta peça única d'onze minuts d'embruix on participen tots quatre cantant i tocant. Ara, com una colla d'amics en una taverna; ara, la solitària Belle que també es recorda del James, el soldat; ara, el James que canta a la Belle però ella sembla que no el sent, perquè resulta que tots dos són morts, i són els fantasmes els que canten. Estremidora. Al final, apareix un orgue d'església sobre el qual la Belle i el James parlen alhora davant una llar, potser sense veure's. I la cançó desapareix de sobte. Una composició d'altura que se t'emporta a la taverna del misteri.

Well, I love the ISB, but I've never been able to get a charge out of the two aforementioned recordings, and Mr. Wade doesn't really give me a coherent rationale for changing my mind. The writing about the albums which he and I do agree are good is similarly bland. I like that he likes what I like, but he doesn't get me pumped about it.Recommended mainly if you're already in the ISB orbit. As New York’s Brill Building becomes established as the top place for rock publishers, women like Carole King, Cynthia Weil, and Ellie Greenwich become some of pop-rock’s most successful songwriters. Girl groups like the Shirelles, the Crystals, the Ronettes, the Chiffons, and the Cookies have numerous hits in the early 1960s, forming one of the major trends in rock of the period. In the early 1960s, some of the most R&B-oriented girl groups become some of the first soul stars, especially for Motown Records, with the Marvelettes, Martha & the Vandellas, the Supremes, and Mary Wells. Week Two: Women in Soul and British Rock Women soul singers emerge throughout the country, some of them more pop-oriented (Maxine Brown, Dionne Warwick), some of them earthier (Carla Thomas, Irma Thomas, Etta James). Aretha Franklin is anointed the Queen of Soul after moving to Atlantic Records and adopting a tougher, more spiritual sound. Other women soul singers with a forceful style emerge and increase in popularity, like Gladys Knight, Nina Simone, and the Staple Singers. Although all-male guitar bands dominate the British Invasion, a good number of women singers also make an impact both in their native UK and in the US.
