The race was established by Cambridge Boat Club members D’Arcy MacMahon, Howard McIntyre, and Jack Vincent, with the assistance of instructor Ernest Arlett. Arlett proposed that a “head of the river” race, similar in tradition to races held in his native , be held on the . MEDIA GUIDE 2017 7 There were nearly 300 competitors in the first Head Of The Charles Regatta, competing in singles, fours, and eights. ® Over the past 51 years, the Regatta has grown tremendously. Today, nearly 11,000 rowers (more than 2,000 boats) from 750 universities, schools, and rowing clubs representing 28 nations compete in 56 different race events. With the generous support of our sponsors—such as BNY Mellon, Brooks Brothers, and New Balance—we produce a world-class event that attracts tens of thousands of spectators. The Head Of The Charles Regatta is managed by the members of the Cambridge Boat Club with assistance from more than 1,700 volunteers, numerous local schools and rowing clubs, and the Department of Conservation and Recreation

(DCR). The board of directors of the Cambridge Boat Club THE CHARLES HEAD OF FIFTY-THIRD appoints three trustees to oversee the management of the race as well as the eleven-member Race Committee that meets year- round to oversee the operational and logistical details of the event. In 1991, the trustees appointed Frederick V. Schoch Executive Director of the Regatta, and he continues to spearhead the event. Schoch, a former secondary school English instructor and rowing coach for many years at Princeton, the U.S. Naval Academy and Georgetown, founded the Challenge of the Hudson regatta in New York. He also has been an active member of the U.S. Rowing National Team Coaching Staff. The Cambridge Boat Club, located at Gerry’s Landing in Cambridge Mass., serves as headquarters for the event. It was established in 1909 for the purpose of encouraging boating and yachting, and as a place for social gatherings for its members. The club maintains an active membership of more than 300. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where does the Head Of The Charles start and finish? How long is it? The race starts near ’s DeWolf Boathouse and finishes approximately 3-miles (4,828 meters) upstream at Herter Park (aka Artesani Park) on Soldier’s Field Road in Brighton. MEDIA GUIDE 2017 8 What does a “Head” race mean?

® Head races are a class of regattas generally three miles long, with boats racing against the clock. Winners of each race receive the honorary title of “Head of the River” or, in this case, “Head Of The Charles.”

How does a boat win a ? Winners are determined by time. The boat that rows the course clocked at the fastest time (including any penalties) wins its event. The quickest rowing time wins (i.e., not the first boat to cross the finish line).

How is each boat’s time determined? Each boat start sequentially approximately fifteen seconds apart, FIFTY-THIRD HEAD OF THE CHARLES HEAD OF FIFTY-THIRD and a start time is noted for each and every boat as it crosses the Start Line; the clock stops for each boat at the Finish Line. The exact time is recorded the instant each boat crosses the Start and Finish. The final Race Time is stated in minutes, seconds and thousandths of a second (ex: 18:46:228). All boats’ preliminary times are posted generally within 15 minutes after the conclusion of each event.

What is the best way to follow a Head race? Watching a head race is unique because boats start in single file, one after another, at the start line (remember, the winners are determined by time!). As boats are rowing the course, one boat can pass another boat—which means the passing boat is faster. You can follow a particular boat’s progress by noting its “bow number,” which is the large number positioned on the bow (front) of every boat; basically, for each lower numbered boat it passes, a passing boat will have rowed the course faster by roughly 10-15 seconds. Another important viewing tool is the “bow ball,” also located on the bow (front) of the boat, which mimics the boat’s momentum. In a nutshell, the bow ball should not bob or halt, but rather should travel smoothly. Long and fluid strokes generally make for faster boats. Is there a penalty system used during the race for various violations? Yes, and it may effect the final outcome of each event. A penalty time is added to the boat’s final time, which could result in drastic changes to the boat’s finish place. Examples of a reason to be penalized include failing to remain in the confines of the course, and failing to yield to boats who are attempting to pass. MEDIA GUIDE 2017 What if a boat wants to pass another boat? 9 If a competitor is in a passing position, the slower boat must ® move or “give weigh” to the side or risk penalty. This is part of the sportsmanship of the sport.

How can I distinguish each team or rower? Every boat in each race is given a number, knows as a “Bow Number.” The number will appear on the bow (front) of the boat. All of the bow numbers are listed in the Head Of The Charles program. Many clubs also have identifying marks on their blades (oars) or uniforms—but they may be borrowed equipment from another club. Bow numbers are the most accurate method to distinguish competitors.

What’s a “coxswain”? Do all boats have them? THE CHARLES HEAD OF FIFTY-THIRD The person who steers the boat and gives commands is called a “coxswain” (pronounced COX-in) or “cox.” Only the eights and fours have coxswains.

How many boats are in this year’s Regatta? People? This year there are 2,256 boats rowing at the 52nd Head Of The Charles Regatta. In total, nearly 11,000 people will be rowing at HOCR this year. Competition includes boats registered from 39 states and 28 countries. Over 12% of all entries are registered from countries outside of the US. The Regatta has more than 1,700 volunteers working in various capacities including race logistics and venue operations.

Can anyone compete in the Head Of The Charles? Anyone can compete in HOCR, however they must go through an entry process, and for most there is a lottery process. Approximately 33% of all entries are turned away—primarily due to space limitations of the Regatta. Rowers will get a “guaranteed” entry if they finish in the top 50% of their field in crew events and the top 25% of their field in sculling events in which they competed the preceding year. Where are the best locations to watch the Regatta? Some of the best locations include anywhere along Memorial Drive (Route 2) in Cambridge, the start line at BU’s DeWolfe Boathouse, the finish line at Herter Park, and any of the seven bridges the 3-mile course passes through. Actually, there is not a bad seat on the river.

MEDIA GUIDE 2017 What else is there to do at Head Of The Charles? 10 Back for its seventh year, The Eliot Bridge Enclosure (EBE) will

® return to the banks of the Charles as the Regatta’s premiere controlled-access hospitality experience. Situated next to the Eliot Bridge on the Boston side, this tent offers gourmet breakfast and lunch buffets from Post 390 as well as two gratis bar tickets. There is also a cash bar available. Enjoy the weekend in style at this private, comfortable venue. Tickets are $125 per day or $230 for the weekend. Three other popular venues worth checking out: The Rowing & Fitness EXPO has the best products and services available to live a healthy lifestyle (whether you row or not!). The EXPO is located by the finish line, by Herter Park. Attager Row, the athlete village for 2016, is located at the Finish Area Launch Site (FALS). Attager Row houses Athlete Registration, Weigh - In, and Awards FIFTY-THIRD HEAD OF THE CHARLES HEAD OF FIFTY-THIRD ceremonies and Evening By The Charles on Saturday night. Join the rowing community for a night of reminiscing, music, drinks, and food to celebrate the results of the day and prepare for the races to come! Reunion Village is a central gathering place open to the public (admission is $10/person) for schools, clubs and groups to hang out together, while watching the Regatta at a spectacular location—on the Boston side of the Weeks Footbridge, overlooking Harvard University and the famed Weld Boathouse. GLOSSARY OF TERMS BLADE: Otherwise known as “Oar,” but most rowers refer to them as blades. THE CHARLES HEAD OF FIFTY-THIRD BOW: The front of the boat. Rowers are seated facing the stern of the boat. BOW BALL: The white rubber ball on the front end of the boat (“shell”) that protects it, and provides an easy way to see who’s ahead. BOW NUMBER: A numerical sign mounted on the front of each competing boat, indicating the boat’s starting position in its event division. COXSWAIN: He/She steers and acts like a coach by communicating position and strategy to rowers. The coxswain must weigh at least 100 pounds. Coxswains are included in two events: the four with a coxswain and the eight. CREW: The group of competitors propelling and steering a boat. DOUBLE: Boats propelled by two people, each with two oars. EIGHTS: Eight-oared boats with eight rowers plus a coxswain. Each rower has an oar. The boat is 58 feet long and weighs about 210 pounds. FOOT STRETCHER: The place where the rower’s feet are positioned. The rower’s shoes are bolted into the footrests. FOURS: Four-oared boats with four rowers plus a coxswain. Each rower has one oar. HEAD RACES: Races taking place in the Fall season, usually at least MEDIA GUIDE 2017 three miles long, as physiological training for the “sprint” season in the 14 spring. Boats compete against each other indirectly by racing against a

® clock. They line up in order according to numbers on their bows and start at 10-15 second intervals. Winners of each event are deemed “’Head’ Of The River” (ex: “Head Of The Charles”) PENALTY: An addition to a boat’s course time as punishment for steering or other racing rule violations. PORT: The left side, when facing the bow (front) of the boat. However, rowers are seated facing the stern, so port is on their right side. The opposite side is “starboard.” POWER 10: A call for rowers to do 10 of their best, most powerful strokes. It’s a strategy used to pull ahead of a competitor. QUAD: Short for quadruple sculls. Boats propelled by four people, each

FIFTY-THIRD HEAD OF THE CHARLES HEAD OF FIFTY-THIRD using two oars (sculling). Unlike fours, quads do not use coxswains to steer the boat. Instead, the person sitting in the bow (first) seat steers the boat with his/her feet while rowing backwards. RIGGER: The triangular shaped metal device that is bolted onto the side of the boat and holds the oars. SCULLER/SCULLING: A person or the act of a person using a pair of oars to propel the boat. SEAT: Each person sitting in a boat has a seat number to locate their position within their boat. For example, an Eight will have a bow-seat, 2-seat, 3-seat, 4-seat, 5-seat, 6-seat, 7-seat, and 8-seat (aka “stroke seat”). SLIDE: The tracks at the bottom of each boat where the seats slide back-and-forth as the rower propels the boat with their legs. SINGLES: Boats 27 feet long, 11 inches wide, and weighing some 25- 30 pounds, propelled by one person with two oars, also referred to as “sculls.” STARBOARD: The right side, when facing the bow (front) of the boat. However, rowers are seated facing the stern, so starboard is on their left side. The opposite side is “port.” STROKE RATE: Number of strokes per minute the crew takes. Stroke ratings vary from boat to boat, depending on the number of rowers and size of athletes. At the start, the stroke rate will be higher 36 – 38 strokes per minutes for an Eight, then settle at the middle of the race to 32 – 36 strokes per minute. Singles (scullers) will start at 32 – 34 strokes per minute, then settle to 28 – 32. Most rowers will attempt to sprint the final 500 meters of the race.

STROKE: The person who is closest to the stern and sets the MEDIA GUIDE 2017 15 rhythm for the boat; others behind him/her must follow his/her cadence. ® SWEEPS: Each person using a single oar to propel the boat, most often in Fours or Eights. FIFTY-THIRD HEAD OF THE CHARLES HEAD OF FIFTY-THIRD READING RACE RESULTS For each event in the Head Of The Charles, there will be two sets of results distributed. The first set, marked “Unofficial,” is the actual time that each boat completed the course. Using a 15-station adjudication system, judges then assess penalties to racers in violation of course rules. Once these penalties are assessed, a second set of results, marked “Official,” will be distributed. MEDIA GUIDE 2017 16 Below is a sample of how the results may appear on the result sheet.

1 1. Men’s Senior Veteran Singles I and II

Come one, come all. The 2017 HOCR kicks off with the Men’s Senior Veteran Singles I and II, with several Grand Veteran competitors in the field. These three divisions break-down to the 70 - 74 group, 75 - 79, and 80+, respectively. Tom Bishop, the newcomer at bow 1, moves up from the Veteran II category (65 - 69) MEDIA GUIDE 2017 and will try to oust 2016 champion of the Senior Veteran I field, Michael Tebay. But 17 Tebay is no stranger to rowing in puddles. The former GB National Team athlete set a commanding pace in 2016 despite starting bow 37. Both of these scullers will ® need to keep an eye on Landon Carter, the 2013 SV I Champion returning after a brief hiatus.

In the Senior Veteran II category (75 - 79), Henry Hamilton is back at bow 12. Hamilton won his first 1x race at the HOCR in 1978 and will try to make 2017 his 5th time on top of the podium. He’ll need to hold off Bart Pasternak, second in this division in 2016. Pasternak set a blistering pace, leading the SV II field for the first 1.5 miles of the race in 2016.

This field begs the question: when will the Regatta add an 85+ category? Carlo Zezza leads this group at bow 10 after securing the GV win in 2016 and finishing 9th overall and ahead the Senior Veteran II winner. We’ll see a solid battle for second between 13-time HOCR Champ Richard Kendall at bow 18, previous course record holder Chris Collins at bow 19, and Cal Sutliff at bow 30. FIFTY-THIRD HEAD OF THE CHARLES HEAD OF FIFTY-THIRD 2. Women’s Veteran/Senior Veteran Singles I and II

Following the same organization as the Men’s Senior Veteran I/II event but combining the Veterans I/II, Senior Veterans I/II and Grand Veterans, 51 women from ages to 60-80+ compete in this event. Diane Davis, Veteran I 2016 champion (60 - 64), will have to take bow 2 as Margarita Zezza moves up from the Grand Master division with a very fast time and the top seed. These two will fend off 2015 champion, Laura Stirton Aust at bow 6 and some seasoned talent from the back of the pack with two-time Olympian Anne Warner at bow 48. Announcer’s, don’t get confused. This pack does boast both a Diane Davis and a Dianne Davies.

Marie Hagelstein returns at bow 13 to defend her Veteran II (65 - 69) category win from 2016. Jill Gardner, two-time HOCR champ, starts just two bows behind. A buoy violation stood between her and a third win last year.

With 2016 champion, Lia Brouwer-Vogel not returning, the Senior Veteran I division is anyone’s race. MaryAnn McCormick and Dana Perrone both move up to this division from Vet II and they will lead the Senior Vet I field from bows 18 and 19. This will be a battle to watch as these two women finished just five seconds apart on raw time and less than a second apart with an adjusted buoy violation.

Janice Stone leads the Senior Veteran II category at bow 24. She’ll be looking for her third straight win in this division. She’ll need to hold off local favorite, Jane Morse, at bow 26. Holler for our two Grand Veteran competitors: Joan Campbell (bow 34) and Laurette Rindlaub (bow 38).

3. Veteran Men’s Singles I and II (60+)

Local lightweight Bob Eldridge kicks off this event at bow 1. His time from the Grand Master division in 2016 will seed him ahead of 2016 Champion, Tim Willsallen. Don’t expect Willsallen to let Eldridge get away. He’s a two-time champion in this division and he seems to be getting faster every year. Gregg Stone is out with an injury but you’ll see another CBC athlete, John Randle in the MEDIA GUIDE 2017 bow 3 position. 18

® For a race within a race, watch Richard Anderson (bow 4), Raimund Haberl (bow 5), and Ian Luxford (bow 6). These athletes are all contending for the Veteran II crown (65 - 69) and finished within two seconds of one another—with a few buoy penalties in the mix. If Luxford can keep a clean course, he could be the one on the podium this year. But the race isn’t over after these top seeds come through. Volker Nolte, Phd is hiding back at bow 41, racing for Western Rowing Club and most likely putting on a clinic.

4. Grand Master Men’s Singles (50+)

Hit me with your best shot. We said it last year but we’ll say it again. Will someone, anyone, please beat Greg Benning? Greg kicks off this division looking for his sixth straight win (bow 1), a feat accomplished only by Gail Cromwell (formerly Pierson), Larry Klecatsky, Zeus Wade and David Challinor. If anyone can do it, it’s Tom Bohrer. Bohrer upset Benning in the 2008 Senior Master Single interrupting the short streak of wins Benning had collected. This event-division includes athletes FIFTY-THIRD HEAD OF THE CHARLES HEAD OF FIFTY-THIRD from seven nations: Austria, the , , , Great Britain, Ireland, and Mexico.

5. Grand Master Women’s 1x (50+)

With the top three scullers from 2016 all returning, this event should be a real barn burner. Defending champion, Mitz Carr (bow 1), set a commanding pace at the Green Mountain Head Race in , VT. We’ll see what happens when it’s more than maple syrup and apple cider on the line. She’ll be chased by Charlotte Hollings (bow 2) and 2015 winner of this division, Maureen Harriman (bow 3). CBC sculler and ten-time HOCR champion, Saiya Remmler, can’t be discounted. She’ll chase the top scullers from bow 4.

6. Senior-Master Men’s Eights

Who do we have here? Let’s break it down. The Senior-Master division comprises three potential medal categories: Senior-Master (50+), Grand-Master (60+), and Veteran (70+). The age requirements apply to the average, not the individual so you’ll see a handful of young bucks (30+) rounding out these line-ups. Defending champions and course record holders, Boat Club, are back at bow 1 with a nearly identical and certainly olympic-studded line-up. Course record holders, Marin will chase them down at bow 2. Etats Unis is our first seed in the Grand Master division and this year they really are a 60+ crew. Team Attager (bow 16) will be eager to hold on to the title they finally regained in 2016. No stranger to the podium, Attager held the Senior Master title from 2006 - 2011. Watch for the newcomers at the back of the pack, Melbourne University Boat Club (bow 39) to show some speed. With just two veteran crews in the 70+ division, this will be a race between Upper (bow 5) and Occoquan International (bow 30).

7. Senior-Master Women’s Eights

With Long Beach not making the trip East this year, Marin takes bow 1 after their 2nd place performance in 2016. After a strong run of wins in this division from 2011

through 2013, they’ll be eager to retake the title. 2015 champs, Chinook, will be MEDIA GUIDE 2017 chasing them down at bow 2. Both crews should worry about College Club Seattle. 19 They finished 6th last year but started 42nd. With a few national team alums and better water, they could challenge the top boats. Etats Unis leads the Grand Master ® field (60+) at bow 6 boasting a composite crew of women from the 1976, 1980, 1988, and 1992 Olympic crews. They’ll have longtime rivals, 1980 Olympic Crew, starting further back in the pack for vying for the GM title. Just two crews in this field are competing for the Veterans special medal (70+): Marin’s second entry at bow 20 and Masters Coaching closing out the division at bow 36.

8. Senior-Master Men’s Fours

Wallingford Rowing Club from GB is back leading the field at bow 1 after a surprise upset in 2016. Cambridge Boat Club will chase them from bow 2 but with an entirely different line-up and as the first Grand Master eligible boat in this field (60+). They’ll have 1980 Rowing Club—6 time winners of the 50+ category but also contending for 60+ this year—in their puddles. Don’t miss Fairmount Rowing Association at bow 36. With Ted Nash listed in their line-up, they’re a good bet for the Veteran category (70+) THE CHARLES HEAD OF FIFTY-THIRD

9. Senior-Master Women’s Fours

Toronto Sculling Club returns at bow 1 after their 2016 win. With last year’s top 5 all returning and several contenders from the back of the pack, this could be anyone’s race. Watch for the Cambridge Boat Club entry at bow 36 to set a smoking pace. This crew completed all three races in the Head of the Kevin series, consistently beating the time standard. Melbourne University Boat Club (bow 28) could also crack into this top field. This club consistently performs well at the HOCR and won this event-division in 2014. For the Grand Master medal, keep an eye on Early Lights (bow 5), Community Rowing (bow 8) and Chinook Performance Racing (bow 10). As the sole Veteran entry in this division, Avalon Rowing Club (bow 37) has that special medal locked down.

10. Men’s Master Doubles

The RBC dynamic duo of Sean Wolf and Pete Morelli are back at bow 1, looking for their third straight title and chasing the course record set by Dan Gorriaran and Michael Smith in 2003. They’ll need ideal conditions and a perfect course. Fortunately, they can control one of those requirements. They’ll be challenged by last year’s second place crew of Ned Flynn and Edward Demetriou at bow 2. The Minneapolis Rowing Club entry of Joe Spencer and Finbarr McCarthy could also make a solid move from bow 4. They started at the back of the pack in 2016 but worked their way up to a 4th place finish.

11. Senior-Master Men’s Doubles

With the Men’s Senior Master Double now starting immediately behind the Master Double, this could be a race across divisions between Smith/Gorriaran and Morelli/ Wolf (from the Men’s Master Double). Smith and Gorriaran are no strangers to HOCR success. They’re back with bow 1 to defend their title, their course record, and to secure their 13th HOCR win. In the Grand Master division (60+), 1992 MEDIA GUIDE 2017 Olympian Greg Walker and his former coach, Allan Baur are back to defend their 20 2016 win. With five Veteran entries (70+), John Laundon and Rob Slocum will have

® some competition as they go after their third straight Veteran special medal.

12. Women’s Master Doubles

Just half a second separated the top two boats from 2016 and both are back this year. The RBC entry of Ashley Lanfer and Sarah White leads the field with bow 1. They’ll need to hold off 2015 champions two-time Olympians, Kelly Salchow MacArther and Hilary Gehman at bow 3. The RBC entry of Belakovskiy/Vandersteel at bow 3 has posted some competitive times in the Head of the Kevin series and will hope to close the gap with a better seed this year. Keep an eye out for former HOCR Race Committee member and FALS guru, Loryn Sheffner, rowing with Catherine Sheehan at bow 8.

13. Senior Master Women’s Doubles

FIFTY-THIRD HEAD OF THE CHARLES HEAD OF FIFTY-THIRD With CB Sands-Bohrer and Linda Muri transitioning moving into the Senior Master Four after dominating this division for the last four years, Mary Mazzio and Cindy Ryder-Matthes move into bow 1. The CBC duo of Mazzio and Matthes won the Master 2x in 2012 and will have a home course advantage over Whicher/ Randazzo (bow 2) and Krichko/Devitt (bow 3). In the Grand Master division (60+) look for the newcomers at bow 22 from California Yacht Club, Margie Cate and Jen Palchikoff. Cate won the inaugural Women’s Championship Double in 1980 and the inaugural Women’s Master Double in 1994. They’ll be sure to challenge returning GM champions Jill Cooper and Kristina Lund (bow 11). Raise an oar for our sole Veteran special medal (70+) entry in this division, Sara Sargent and Barbara Hogan from Fairmount Rowing Association at bow 13.

14. Men’s Master Singles

Andrew Hashway is back at bow 1 looking for his third win in Men’s Master Single. He set a blistering pace in some fierce winds in 2016, besting the field by nearly a minute. Bow 2, Nate Kelly, is a fresh face joining the 30+ crowd at bow 2. His time from the Club Single last year seeds him within a field of Charles River (past and present) scullers. Andrew Neils, former RBC sculler and lightweight national team member, is at bow 3 rowing for Virginia Rowing Association. Jeff Toto, Dave Ringham, and Mike Farry will chase from bows 4, 5, and 6 respectively. Farry won this division in 2014 before Hashway aged up. Keep an eye on German sculler Fabian Mimberg at bow 11 and decorated Hungarian sculler, Gergely Orban back at bow 18.

15. Men’s Senior Master 1x

With the top scullers transitioning to bigger boats or taking a gap year, bow 1 goes to the third place finisher from this division in 2016, Hans Halvorson from Carnegie Lake Rowing Association. He’ll have , 1997 Men’s World Champion in the 1x, chasing from bow 2. Aleks Zosuls (bow 10) moves into this field from

the Club single and will likely do some passing. Watch for three former lightweight MEDIA GUIDE 2017 national team athletes at the back of the pack: Jonathon Moss rowing for Pioneer 21 Valley Riverfront Club (bow 29), Ryan Demaine rowing for Headington (bow 30), and Tom Loughlin rowing for Dolphin (bow 32). ®

16. Women’s Master Singles

Shannon Kaplan is back at bow 1 after she put on a clinic in 2016. This field struggled with headwinds gusting nearly 30mph in the mid afternoon Sunday race last year. But Kaplan seemed to artfully dodge the poor weather, winning the division by over a minute and a half despite starting second to last. Patty Jones (bow 2) and Kendell Donoho (bow 3) both move into this division from the Club Single. Heather Vogels, former RBC sculler, could pose a threat from the back of the pack. She closes out the field of 13 scullers at lucky bow 13.

17. Women’s Senior Master 1x

The top 8 scullers from 2016 are all returning to challenge 2016 champion, Michelle

Prince, for the Senior Master 1x title. With just 5 seconds separating second place THE CHARLES HEAD OF FIFTY-THIRD from fifth place in 2016, the subsidiary medals are certainly up for grabs. Look for some potential upsets from new entrants at the back of the pack with Bryna McConarty at bow 12, Erin Lallemand at bow 21 and former lightweight national team member, Sheri Kline closing out the field at bow 30.

18. Men’s Alumni Eights

Michigan is back at bow 1 after disrupting 6-time winners of this division, Northeastern (bow 2). Michigan set a course record in 2016 clocking the fastest time of any event-division on Saturday. One of Northeastern’s three entries in this division (bows 2, 20, and 45) will look to regain the title. Cornell alumni are at bow 3 racing as BMA and hoping to hold off five powerhouse crews seeded immediately behind them: BU racing as DeWolfe (bow 4), Yale racing as Lynwood (bow 5), Brown (bow 6), University of Washington (bow 7), and Princeton racing as Fat Cat Rowing Club (bow 8). Williams College, we see you racing as Chocolate Lab Rowing Club (bow 38) and we like it.

19. Women’s Alumnae Eights

The Alumnae Eight has become the defacto reunion tour for all-star division I colleges. Any of the top five crews could take this division. With a line-up including three 2017 World Championship athletes, Princeton (race as Fat Cat) leads the field at bow 1 but will have two-time champions of this division, University of Michigan chasing them at bow 2. Cornell and Yale could shake things up a bit starting from bows 5 and 6 and racing as BMA Boat Club (Cornell) and Boola Boola (Yale). For a good show, watch the 2nd UVA entry back at bow 36 as they try to navigate the field.

20. Men’s Club Fours

Rumor has it that is stacking their Club 4+ in an effort to regain the title they held from 2012 to 2015 after a disappointing 5th place finish last year. They’ll have their work cut out for them with three strong men’s Collegiate

MEDIA GUIDE 2017 programs in the top three seeds: Dartmouth (bow 1), Harvard (bow 2), and BU 22 (bow 3). Two strong club entries from New York Athletic Club (bow 4) and (bow 6) could also contend for the overall win and will certainly vie for ® the Club Special Medal. Keep an eye on the Auriol Kensington entry back at bow 38 from GB, returning to the HOCR after a long hiatus and boasting two athletes who competed at Royal Henley.

21. Women’s Club Fours

In the thirty years that the Head Of The Charles has run the Women’s Club 4+ race, only two organizations have secured back-to-back wins: Williams in the late 80’s and, more recently who ultimately set the course record in 2014. Penn will try to join these two organizations as they lead the field at bow 1 after their 2016 win but they’ll have Wisconsin and Notre Dame at bows 2 and 3. Potomac will try to secure their third straight Club Special Medal win but keep an eye out for new entrant, New York Athletic Club, starting at bow 53 who should be in contention for the Club special medal if there isn’t too much carnage in their preferred line. FIFTY-THIRD HEAD OF THE CHARLES HEAD OF FIFTY-THIRD 22. Men’s Club Eights

This event hasn’t been won by a true club since 2004. The Riverside self- proclaimed Meatwagon (bow 5) in the Men’s Club Eight wants to change that. They’ve posted fast sub-14:30 times in the Head of the Kevin series in near- perfect racing conditions and will have to fight to best four powerhouse Collegiate programs in front of them: Harvard (bow 1), Northeastern (bow 2), BU (bow 3), and current course record holders Brown (bow 4). Dutch crew, ASR Nereus, returns to the Charles at bow 24. They won this division in 2005.

23. Women’s Club Eights

If Brown can secure a fourth straight win in the Women’s Club Eight, they’ll have the longest streak of wins ever recorded in this division. They’ll lead the event at bow 1 with 2016 cinderella story Syracuse (bow 2). Syracuse made a strong move from the back of the pack last year to finish just 4 seconds behind Brown. The two local crews at bows 3 & 4 (Radcliffe and Northeastern) will be battling for top Charles River crew and hoping to top Brown in the process. 2016 Club Special Medal winners, Community Rowing, are back at bow 7 and they’ve been posting times in the Head of the Kevin series that are well within Brown’s pace. Be sure to welcome international competitors in this field: R.G.Hansa Hamburg from Germany (bow 27), De Hoop from the Netherlands (bow 31), and Cork from Ireland (bow 35).

24. Men’s Master Fours [40+]

Palm Beach (bow 1) will he looking to hold on to their 2016 win. They’ll need to hold off Sammamish at bow 2 and the Cornell Alumni boat (BMA) at bow 3 as well as the notable line-up in the Molesey line-up at bow 4. Searle is the only returning rower in the Molesey so it’s difficult to predict their speed. Give a shout-out for the Massachusetts State Police entry at bow 11 and Club Nautico De San Juan at bow 13, making the trip from Puerto Rico.

25. Women’s Master Fours [40+]

The top 9 crews from 2016 are all returning to the Women’s Master Four this year MEDIA GUIDE 2017 and they’ll be led by Alexandria Community Rowing at bow 1. On their heels, will 23 be Berkeley Paddling and Rowing Club at bow 2, Lake Union Crew at bow 3, and 2014 & 2015 champions in this division, Minneapolis Rowing Club in bow 4. These ® crews will need to rate high and steer tight because back at bow 11 is a GB entry full of decorated rowers with their own worldrowing.com pages including , Cath Tillett (formerly Bishop), Kate McKenzie, and Gillian Lindsay.

26. Men’s Master Eights [40+]

Welcome to the bizarro Men’s Championship Eight / Men’s Master Eight. This field likely boasts more Olympians per boat than all others combined. Molesey is back at bow 1 looking for their third straight win with 6 athletes returning from their 2016 crew. Kennebecasis will be hot on their puddles at bow 2 and have added Julien Bahain, 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, to their line-up. Shannon Rowing Club (bow 3) made a similar move, adding Henrik Rummel, 2012 Olympic Bronze medalist. Look for Diesel Athletic Club’s first entry (bow 5) and California Rowing Club (bow 17) to try to crack into the top three. FIFTY-THIRD HEAD OF THE CHARLES HEAD OF FIFTY-THIRD 27. Women’s Master Eights [40+]

Toronto Sculling Club returns at bow 1. They upset the experienced and decorated in 2016 for the win. Toronto has won this event five times since 2009 and will look for their 6th HOCR first place medal. Chinook will chase from bow 2 but they no longer have long-time US stroke-seat in their line-up. For an Australian dark horse, watch out for bow 8, University of Queensland Boat Club.

28. Men’s Champ 2x

In 2016, Justin Keen and Eric Frid were the ‘dark horse’ entry starting bow 19 and taking the win in a field which included multiple medalists and competitors from the Rio Olympics. This year Keen and Frid start Bow #1, and are now being chased by the 4 doubles in a row filled with athletes coming straight from the orldW Championships in Sarasota. The O’Donovan brothers will start bow #2 and will be joined this year by their countrymen Mark O’Donovan (no relation) and Shane O’Driscoll who might just try to row down the course at 40 strokes per minute. Nico Stahlberg and Damir Martin will start bow #3, Sverri Nielson and Tim Ole Naske start bow #4 - both doubles just warming up for their run down the course in the Men’s Great 8. With so much action at the front of the pack, could a new dark horse surface back in the field for 2017?

29. Women’s Champ 2x

The women’s 2x field will be led by the combination of Magdalena Lobnig and Sanita Puspure - 3rd and 4th place in the Women’s 1x at the World Championships in Sarasota and 2nd place finishers in this division in 2016. They’ll be chased by Patricia Merz and Frédérique Rol, the Swiss combo and last year’s top finishing lightweight 2x. Other members of the Women’s great 8 will team up again with the combination of Carling Zeeman and Jeannine Gmelin - Carling finished 6th and Gmelin finished 1st in the Women’s 1x in the World Championships. Keep an eye on local favorite Hilary Seager and Jillian Zieff - they’re starting bow #5 and have the home course advantage. This year’s Champ 2x also has a strong group

MEDIA GUIDE 2017 of Collegiate 2x’s - with MIT, UMass, Radcliffe, University of Washington, Marist 24 College, and the US Merchant Marine Academy going for top Collegiate 2x honors.

® 30a. Men’s Championship Singles

With Norwegian sculler and 2016 champion not returning for the 2017 regatta, John Graves moves into bow 1 for the second year in a row. Lightweight Swiss sculler, Michael Schmid will follow him at bow 2 after a 4th place finish in this division last year and a 4th place finish in the Lightweight Single at the 2017 orldW Championships. Cuban sculler Angel Fournier Rodriguez joins the fray at bow 3 after a second place finish at Worlds. Graves will need a clean course to hold off these scullers, and he’s racked up buoy violations in the last two HOCR’s. Back at bow 16 is the hometown hero and the boy who lived, Andrew Campbell. He set the course record in this field in 2014, surprising several Olympic gold medalists.

30b. Men’s Lightweight Singles

Hugh McAdam is back (bow 1) looking for his fourth straight title in the Men’s

FIFTY-THIRD HEAD OF THE CHARLES HEAD OF FIFTY-THIRD Lightweight Single. He left the field behind last year, winning this division by nearly 40 seconds. Alex Twist, and Peter Schmidt will chase McAdam from bows 2 & 3, respectively. Twist and Schmidt both started in the back of the pack last year and could post some faster times with an improved seed. We could see some speed from a few international entries: Mohammad Hadhrawi rowing for and representing Saudi Arabia (bow 7), Norwegian sculler Ola Larsson rowing for Moss Roklubb (bow 15), and GB sculler Ole Tietz rowing as unaffiliated (bow 16).

31a. Women’s Championship Single

Gevvie Stone has won this event-division eight times in the last ten years, upset only by Ursula Grobler James in 2009 and Kathleen Bertko in 2013. She’s looking for her ninth win and the fair racing conditions are looking favorable for a shot at the course record set by Bertko. She dropped the field in 2016 winning by nearly 40 seconds but Stesha Carle (bow 2) and Elle Logan (bow 3) are back with the hopes of closing the gap. They’ll be followed by a strong group of US scullers including Mary Jones who took home the bronze medal from the lightweight women’s single at the 2017 World Championships and , who finished 7th in the Open 1x at Worlds. Following them will be representatives from the US Women’s Double and Quad as well as Lisa Scheenard, the Dutch sculler who finished fifth in Sarasota.

Returning champions, Matt McLaughlin and Josh Crosby lead the field with bow 1 with 2016 second place finisher Johanna Beyer at bow 2 with a new 2x partner, Rainer Putz. Beyer’s double finished less than a second behind the McLauchlin/Crosby combi in 2016 and she is fresh off a 4th place finish in the PR3 Mix2x at World Championships. Watch for a real battle between the next two boats: the Minzner/ Gillis duo at bow 3 and the married couple of Sydlik/Porter at bow 4. Closing out the field is the first ever Collegiate Inclusion entry: Ithaca College at bow 15.

He finished 8th in this division in 2016 but with few scullers returning, he’ll likely enjoy the scenery at bow 2. Matt Schaeffer is a dark horse entry in this division at bow 11. He finished third in the Men’s 2x Olympic trials in 2016. Two local scullers could challenge from the back of the pack: Riverside’s Trey Chandler at bow 24 and BU’s alum, Alex Dillon at bow 27.

34b. Men’s Youth 1x

The Youth 1x sees high turnover as athletes age up or move into larger boat classes. The 8th place finisher in this division from 2016 moves into bow 1. With only a handful or returning participants, this really could be anyone’s race. Austrian junior national team athlete, Gabriel Stekl will likely show some speed from bow 14.

MEDIA GUIDE 2017 Powerhouse sculling program, Malvern Prep has three entries in this 26 division that will all likely contend: Chenkai Mao at bow 15, John McGlinn at bow 23, and Anthony Wirtel at bow 30. ® 35a. Women’s Club Single

Julia Rigothi leads the field at bow 1. She moves into this field from theomen’s W Championship but her time gives her the top seed. Corlis Gross, 2015 champion in this division, will follow at bow 2. The 2012 winner of this division, Kelley Woodacre, will also be eager to reclaim the title from bow 5. For a striped dark horse in this event-division, watch for Sarah Cottrill at bow 18. She’s in her first year of sculling but has posted some very competitive times in the Head Of The Kevin series.

35b. Women’s Youth Single

Eliose Lambden from the American School of kicks of this field at bow 1. She is the only returning sculler in this event and just so happens to also be the 2016 champion. She’ll have Anna Matthes on her puddles at bow 2. Anna recently

Three Rivers Rowing Association leads this field of 85 boats. They’ll be chased by several accomplished youth programs, with Saugatuck at bow 2 and San Diego Rowing Club at bow 3, and two-time winners of this event-division, Holy Names at bow 4. Dark horses in this event could be: Nobles, starting mid-pack at bow 43 after a serious collision last year and the Sarasota Scullers at bow 79.

37. Women’s Youth Coxed Quad

This event enters it’s second year with more and more programs adding a coxed quad to their fleet. In just one year entries have increased 24%, encouraging more and more youth athletes to add sculling to their racing repertoire. Keep an eye on the Headington School from GB starting Bow #3 - the coxed quad is a staple development tool across the pond and these athletes will know how to race effectively in the boat class. The field is also joined by Kai Tak Youth Rowing program from Hong Kong, China who are making their first appearance at HOCR.

38. Women’s Youth Eight

Saugatuck will go for 3 in a row in the Women’s Youth Eight starting from bow #1. This program has been a force on the youth scene and will look to continue the trend. But don’t think that west coast powerhouses Marin and Oakland Strokes won’t have something to say about it - they like to make the most of their cross country fall trip and always perform well here at HOCR. Keep an eye on CRI, starting bow #20 - the hometown favorites have been picking up speed and have the home course knowledge that can save some seconds down the course. Another crew to keep an eye on is PRNA/Mercer who will start bow #13 - this Princeton, NJ club will look to break into the top 10 this year.

39. Men’s Youth Doubles MEDIA GUIDE 2017 Narragansett returns to defend bow #1 in this highly competitive event. With GMS 27 chasing them down the course, it’s a battle between the Connecticut crews. Four crews in this event call the Charles their home: Bow #11, Row Boston; Bow #18, ® West Cambridge Rowing; Bow #23, Cambridge Boat Club; and Bow #44, Boston Latin School. Let’s hope they help guide the pack!

40. Women’s Youth Doubles

Bow #’s 1 and 2 are defending their spots for two years in a row - maybe this is Bow #2 Cambridge’s year to take the top spot? We all encourage a little shake-up now and then. Bow #15 is a Dutch crew who’s bow seat, Ilse Feenstra, is fresh off a speedy summer racing the 2x at the World Junior Championships in Lithuania. Keep an eye out for Bow #19 Friends of Brookline Rowing - they’ve moved their homebase upstream on the Charles and have picked up some serious speed.

41. Men’s Youth Fours

2015 saw a major shake up when second and third place were swiped up by Bow THE CHARLES HEAD OF FIFTY-THIRD #30 South Niagara and Bow #37 Rye High School. Navigating this event is no easy feat - as one of our largest events, the Men’s Youth Fours sees 86 entries. Nobles crew brings a wealth of experience to this event. This crew won the event in 2015, dropped back to fourth in 2016, but has shown speed this fall and are most definitely a force to be reckoned with.

42. Men’s Youth Coxed Quad

2017 marks the second year of the Men’s Youth Coxed quad. Bow #1 is youth sculling powerhouse New Canaan High School. Right on their tails is the oldest rowing club in the world, Boat Club. Keep an eye on Bow #5 Saratoga Rowing Association. They’ve ramped up their sculling offerings and have made competitive sculling a priority in their youth competitive programs.

43. Men’s Youth Eights

It’s the California Showdown. For the past two years, Oakland Strokes and Marin have battled on the water for the HOCR title. Oakland Strokes leads the pack of a whopping 85 entries, making it one of our most competitive events on race day, but also one of the most competitive events in which to earn entry. Hot on their tails are New Trier and the Juniors. Watch out for Bow #9 - three of the nine athletes won a silver medal in the Lightweight 8+ at the 2017 USRowing Junior National Championships.

44a. Men’s Championship Fours

USRowing will lead the field from Bow #1 with a new lineup, but the crew who won the event last year will actually be back in bow #12 rowing for RowLA. German club Favorite Hammonia and Dutch club De Hoop will see how they stack up in the field starting from the 9th and 10th spots. Great to see some clubs jumping in the

MEDIA GUIDE 2017 Champ 4 mix as well with the local Union Boat Club starting from Bow 14 and the 28 New York Athletic Club starting from bow 19.

® 44b. Men’s Lightweight Fours

NYAC took top honors in this event last year but keep an eye on Brooks starting bow #3 - the crew is highlighted by Peter Chambers (Rio silver medalist in the LM4-) who will lead fellow GB teammates down the course. Watch out for the crew from starting back toward the end of the pack - this program has a few lightweight 4 titles to its name and could be a dark horse back in the field.

45a. Women’s Championship Fours

With USRowing athletes sitting this event out this year, Brown moved from bow #2 to bow #1. Don’t get comfortable yet - bow #2 Syracuse was only 4 seconds behind Bruno last year. Bow #11 Boston University is under new leadership this fall - coach Davis has been leading her athletes into shape, and they’ve already shown speed this fall. This event is unique this year in that all crews are collegiate athletes with

FIFTY-THIRD HEAD OF THE CHARLES HEAD OF FIFTY-THIRD no current athletes from any international training center.

45b. Women’s Lightweight Fours

2017 is shaping up to be a local battle for the Women’s Lightweight Four. Bow #s 1-4 call Boston their home: MIT, and Radcliffe sandwiched between two Boston University crews. Lucky for them, they take advantage of their seeding and are able to race each other on the water every morning. This event sees 11 entries - a small enough race where all athletes are likely to have raced each other in the spring.

46a. Men’s Championship Eights

This year’s Men’s Great 8 (Wairau, Bow 4) will look to be the class of the field here in 2017. University of Washington, will not give up their top spot easily however, and will be pressed hard by rivals University of California-Berkeley. Watch out for Yale, bow #6 - is the reigning IRA Champions and may sneak in for the win with the first couple crews being pressed by the ‘Great 8’.

46b. Men’s Lightweight Eights

With 2016 champions Western Ontario not returning, the door is open for Cornell to take top honors starting Bow #1. Cornell has been a perennial top crew in the lightweight field and will look to take advantage of the clear line ahead. atchW Delaware in bow #5, these guys love to crash the Ivy league party, and could contend for a top 5 finish in this year’s event. Harvard University will look to bounce back from last year’s performance starting bow #9

47. Men’s Collegiate Eights

Big Blue will lead the field as bow #1 with last year’s champions not returning. The Collegiate field is a showcase of the top ACRA teams, and watch out for last year’s ACRA Champions UCSB to pick up where they left off last spring starting as Bow #4. MIT has steadily been rising through this field the past few years, and could

contend for a top spot starting bow #6 this year. is celebrating their MEDIA GUIDE 2017 30th year this weekend, and will be looking to put on a strong performance from the 29 middle of the pack. ® 48a. Women’s Championship Eights

The Great 8 (Sudbury) returns with a new crew, so will give up their #1 seed from 2017 and will start bow #3. They will be pushed by USRowing in bow #4 and #6 sandwiching the Canadian national crew in bow #5. With strong crews pressing from behind, the question will be if that will be enough to push Brown and Yale to contend for the top Collegiate crews in the field. 2017 National Champions University of Washington will be lurking back in bow #27, they will be followed closely by Stanford University - both crews looking to make the cross country trip well worth it. Local stripes Riverside Boat Club will mix it up with the top collegiate crews, starting bow #32 right behind european crews Minerva and KSRV Njord.\

48b. Women’s Lightweight Eights

A small field this year with 8 crews contending for the top spot, Radcliffe will try to THE CHARLES HEAD OF FIFTY-THIRD fend off the field from Bow #1. Stanford is joining the field this year and will start Bow #7 - they won their 3rd consecutive national title in the spring of 2017, and will look to add an HOCR title to their track record. BU, MIT, and Princeton round out the field which could be anyone’s race for the taking here in 2017!

49. Women’s Collegiate Eights

Always an early preview of the top DIII women’s programs - the first 6 crews are also the grand final Varsity 8’s from the 2017 NCAA DIII Championships. Wesleyan took top honors in last year’s HOCR by less than a second, but watch out for local favorites who have been sharp this fall. Bates College show’s their depth starting 2 eights in the field at 4th and 12th, would like to make a statement by grabbing two top ten finishes this year. Keep an eye on the UCSB and Grand Valley squads, as the two top ACRA schools will look to crash the DIII party.

50. Men’s Collegiate 4+

Middlebury College will lead the field as bow #1 with 2016 winner FIT not returning. Last year San Diego finished toward the top of the field from bow 42, and similarly UC Davis started from bow #44. This year they start 2nd and 3rd respectively and it will be interesting to see how they fair with less traffic ahead of them. A crew that could rise from the middle of the pack is Marist College, starting bow 26. Marist has been picking up speed throughout the program and could have a strong showing if they have a clean race.

51. Women’s Collegiate 4+ Carleton moved from bow #14 to finish 2nd in 2016 and will lead the field from bow #1 with Barry University sitting this year out. University of New Hampshire will look to retake top honors as they did in 2015, and will start bow #2. Keep an eye on Wellesley College back in bow 23, they have done well in the Collegiate 8’s event the past few years and will be interesting to see how their four stacks up in this field. Another crew to watch from the back half of the field is Lafayette College - this is the MEDIA GUIDE 2017 same athletes who won Dad Vails and the ACRA in the varsity 4 last spring, and 30 would like to keep their streak alive with a title at HOCR. ® FIFTY-THIRD HEAD OF THE CHARLES HEAD OF FIFTY-THIRD NOTES MEDIA GUIDE 2017 31 ® FIFTY-THIRD HEAD OF THE CHARLES HEAD OF FIFTY-THIRD INTERNATIONAL COMPETITORS Total 270
