GENETIC JOYCE STUDIES – Issue 21 (Spring 2021) Three Missing Books in Finnegans Wake Viviana-Mirela Braslasu and Geert Lernout In the course of her work for a University of Antwerp doctorate, Viviana-Mirela Braslasu has identified three undocumented sources in James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake: Oliver Wendell Holmes’ The Professor at the Breakfast-Table, Dame Partlet’s Farm and Lewis Carroll in Wonderland and at Home by Belle Moses. We don’t have notebook evidence, so the following identifications are conjectural, but we tried to be as expansive as possible. We offer the identifications in the order in which they appear in the respective book, but needless to say at least some of these items may have been found by Joyce in one of the many other sources that were available to him. This is our evidence for the fact that Joyce did use the three books: In December 1923-January 1924, in the first draft of Book I, chapter 5, section 4, Joyce wrote: These paper wounds, four in type, were gradually and correctly understand (sic) to mean stop, please stop, do please stop, and O do please stop respectively, and investigation showed that they were provoked by the fork of a professor at the breakfast table. PUBLIC COLLECTORS Records Collection Inventory of: Marc Fischer Chicago, IL, USA About PUBLIC COLLECTORS Public Collectors consists of informal agreements where collectors allow the contents of their collection to be published and permit those who are curious to directly experience the objects in person. Participants must be willing to type up an inventory of their collection, provide a means of contact and share their collection with the public. Collectors can be based in any geographic location. Public Collectors is founded upon the concern that there are many types of cultural artifacts that public libraries, museums and other institutions and archives either do not collect or do not make freely accessible. Public Collectors asks individuals that have had the luxury to amass, organize, and inventory these materials to help reverse this lack by making their collections public. The purpose of this project is for large collections of materials to become accessible so that knowledge, ideas and expertise can be freely shared and exchanged. Public Collectors is not intended, nor should it be used for buying and selling objects. There are many preexisting venues for that. Collectors can accommodate viewers at whatever location is most com - fortable or convenient for them. If their collection is portable or can be viewed in a location other than the collector’s home, this would still be an appropriate way to participate in the project. I recieved a call around March of '94 from Bruce Dauser, a printer who had called me once after seeing my posters in the Art of Rock. He then had stopped at my booth at the '63 Hall of Flowers(SF) poster show. Bruce's call was the beginning of a close friendship, working together with Chet Helms on many Family Dog posters. Bruce had gotten word that Boots Hughston was looking for a poster artist for the Helms Tribute Benefit that he was promoting. There already were several posters being done, including ones by Wes Wilson and Alton Kelley; but rock superstar Steve Miller had just signed on and they wanted a poster to have him included on the complete lineup. -

Reg. 60185. George Clinton (“Clinton”) submitted informal objections on August 25, 2014, id. at 60186, and hereby submits through his undersigned counsel his formal comments objecting to the proposed settlement and distribution. INTRODUCTION George Clinton is the Godfather of Funk and a national treasure. A recording artist since 1959, Clinton is one of the most important musicians of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In Parliament and Funkadelic, musical groups he formed and led, he scored more than forty hit singles in the 1970s, including four R&B number ones: Parliament’s “Flash Light” and “Aqua Boogie (A Psychoalphadiscobetabioaquadoloop),” and Funkadelic’s million-selling “One Nation Under A Groove” and “(Not Just) Knee Deep.” Clinton, along with fifteen other members of Parliament and Funkadelic, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. In 2011, the Smithsonian Institution acquired the Mothership, the flying saucer from which Clinton’s groups once embarked to begin concert performances, to anchor the National Museum of African American History’s inaugural exhibition.1 In 2012, Berklee College of Music awarded Clinton an honorary doctorate. -

Groove Theory 9 Groove Theory: A Vamp on the Epistemology of Funk Tony Bolden When asked to define funk, George Clinton once said, “If it makes you shake your rump, it’s the funk.”1 At the most basic level, the term “funk” signifies honesty and beauty of expression at the depths of human emotion. As such, funk comprises the secular counterpart of “the spirit”—what Albert Murray calls “paroxysms of ecstasy”—in black church worship. Writing about James Brown, the musicologist Teresa L. Reed makes an observation that is applicable to funk music generally. She states that the music “captures the soulful spontaneity of the Sanctified church and the animated exhortation of the Sanctified preacher. [The music] also emulates and incites an emotional intensity parallel to the Holy Spirit possession that is a trademark of the Sanctified worship service.”2 Teddy Pendergrass makes a similar point in his memoir Truly Blessed. Recall- ing his childhood experiences in what he described as a “rock-‘em, sock-‘em, sanctified, feel-the-Spirit church,” Pendergrass said, “We talk today about the innovations in rhythm made by great jazz musicians and pioneers like James Brown, but the truth is, they had nothing on a congregation going full force in praise of the Lord.”3 The musicologist Guthrie P. Ramsey, Jr. echoes Pendergrass’s statement in his recollection of his experiences as a member of the Sanctified Band in Chicago. According to Ramsey, “Funky was the watchword . God liked funky.
