The Nineteenth-Century Russian Gypsy Choir and the Performance of Otherness Erik R. Scott Summer 2008 Erik R. Scott is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of History, at the University of California, Berkeley Acknowledgments I would like to thank Professor Victoria Frede and my fellow graduate students in her seminar on Imperial Russian History. Their careful reading and constructive comments were foremost in my mind as I conceptualized and wrote this paper, first for our seminar in spring 2006, now as a revised work for publication. Abstract: As Russia’s nineteenth-century Gypsy craze swept through Moscow and St. Petersburg, Gypsy musicians entertained, dined with, and in some cases married Russian noblemen, bureaucrats, poets, and artists. Because the Gypsies’ extraordinary musical abilities supposedly stemmed from their unique Gypsy nature, the effectiveness of their performance rested on the definition of their ethnic identity as separate and distinct from that of the Russian audience. Although it drew on themes deeply embedded in Russian— and European—culture, the Orientalist allure of Gypsy performance was in no small part self-created and self-perpetuated by members of Russia’s renowned Gypsy choirs. For it was only by performing their otherness that Gypsies were able to seize upon their specialized role as entertainers, which gave this group of outsiders temporary control over their elite Russian audiences even as the songs, dances, costumes, and gestures of their performance were shaped perhaps more by audience expectations than by Gypsy musical traditions. The very popularity of the Gypsy musical idiom and the way it intimately reflected the Russian host society would later bring about a crisis of authenticity that by the end of the nineteenth century threatened the magical potential of Gypsy song and dance by suggesting it was something less than the genuine article. -

Entre ellos se encuentra la representación de la figura del gitano como modelo de actuación para unas generaciones de oyentes a quienes les preocupaba el aspecto cultural a la contra, así como los modelos de vida alternativos a los legitimados por la clase media de la época. El objetivo de este estudio es analizar el componente romantizado que se presenta en la obra de Morrison alrededor de su representación del gitanismo, así como observar cómo esos elementos generan primero una función deontologizante y después una resignificación de los espacios en tránsito ocupados por la(s) imaginación(es) de esta comunidad como pueblo nómada. Para llevar a cabo el análisis se atenderá a varias canciones de la primera época del autor norirlandés, y se explicarán las funciones de representación del gitano en el entorno del espacio y de una epistemología contracultural. HIGHLAND HEARTBEAT -- Centuries-old Tradition Meets Modern Music to Capture the Heart and Soul of Scotland in Song in New TV Special Premiering on PBS beginning February 28 -- Singer/actress Fiona Kennedy, a member of Scotland’s leading theatrical family and well- known in North America as the host of “Tartan TV,” leads a group of singers brought together from a country-wide audition to represent a range of musical styles. Singers Jim Malcolm, Jillian Isbister, Maureen McMullan, Daisy Chute and Darren Maclean perform at the historic Theatre Royal in Glasgow backed by the Scottish Festival Orchestra. The men wear the traditional Scottish kilt, and the women wear modern designs that riff on traditional Scottish themes. Emmy Award-winning Scottish actor Brian Cox (“The Bourne Supremacy”) reads the works of Scotland’s national bard, Robert Burns, with stunning footage of Scotland interspersed between songs. The concert was shot in high definition in August 2008. Opening with the emotive wails of the distinctive Scottish bagpipe, the music performed in HIGHLAND HEARTBEAT embodies the pride and passion of a country rich with history, offering a concert that spans genres and generations from traditional Scottish compositions like “Loch Lomond” and “Down in the Glen” to pop hits originally sung by Carly Simon, Bette Midler, and Simon and Garfunkel that infuse Scottish cultural significance to the familiar lyrics. 50 Years as “The Leader in Entertainment” Since it opened 50 years ago, world-renowned Caesars Palace has been home to many legendary and iconic voices, including Wayne Newton, Liberace, Debbie Reynolds, Cher, Paul Anka, Judy Garland, Tony Bennett, Marvin Hamlisch, Bette Midler, Natalie Cole, Liza Minnelli, The Beach Boys, Ike & Tina Turner and Elton John – just to name a few. • Aug. 5, 1966 – At opening night of the iconic Caesars Palace, Andy Williams performed at the future home of the biggest and brightest stars on the Las Vegas Strip. • June 12 – 15, 1969 – Aretha Franklin performs at Circus Maximus, with Redd Foxx opening the show. • Feb. 12 – 25, 1970 – Before quitting stand-up comedy to devote himself to films, Woody Allen frequently performed at Caesars Palace. • April 15 – May 12, 1971 – Tom Jones recorded his live album “Tom Jones Live at Caesars Palace,” released in Nov. 1971. • Feb. 1 – 14, 1974 – Diana Ross recorded her live album, “Live At Caesars Palace,” released in May 1974. • June 6 – 19, 1974 – After four years, Frank Sinatra returned to Circus Maximus at Caesars Palace, performing with Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie and Pat Henry. • June 16 – 22, 1977 – Sammy Davis. Honorary Entertainment Industry Board The Survivor Mitzvah Project’s Honorary Entertainment Industry Board, along with other artists from stage, screen, and the music industry, donates their time and talents to bring public awareness to the mission of The Survivor Mitzvah Project – to bring emergency aid to the last survivors of the Holocaust in Eastern Europe. EDWARD ASNER – Versatile, committed, eloquent and talented are all adjectives that describe Edward Asner. Best known for his comedic and dramatic crossover as the gruff but soft-hearted journalist Lou Grant, a role he originated on the landmark TV comedy The Mary Tyler Moore Show and continued in the drama Lou Grant, for which he won 5 Emmys and three Golden Globes, he received 2 more Emmy and Golden Globes for Rich Man, Poor Man and Roots. His career demonstrates a consummate ability to transcend the line between comedy and drama. One of the most honored actors in the history of television, Mr. Asner has 7 Emmy Awards and 16 nominations, as well as 5 Golden Globes. He served as National President of SAG and received the Guild’s Life Achievement Award for career achievement and humanitarian accomplishment and was inducted into the TV Academy Hall of Fame. He has advocated for human rights, world peace, environmental preservation and political freedom, receiving the Anne Frank Human Rights Award, among other honors. With more than 100 TV credits, his films include Fort Apache the Bronx, JFK and Elf, and he was the lead voice in UP!, which won two Golden Globes and two Academy Awards. Presently Mr. -
