FAMILY COMMUNION 10.30am Tetford A service for all the family on this Christmas Morning

CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT

Christmas Eve at 6.30pm

St Leonard’s Church South Ormsby

Readings and Carols by Candlelight Please bring your own torch or lantern

I was talking to a young woman about what she was planning to do on Christmas day. She mentioned that she did not have any relatives to go to so she would be spending it quietly. She told me she loved Christmas day and was looking forward to spending time with her little boy. She described how she would spend the day by having a nice meal together and then they would play lots of board games. This young woman was positively beaming as she was telling me and then she told me how much she and her son loved doing really simple things together.

That really got me thinking, do we, at Christmas, really focus on what Christmas is truly about or do we get carried away in a busy buying frenzy with the rest of society and forget where the real focus should be ? People often say to me that Christmas is all about the children. Obviously it is lovely to see children caught up in the wonder of Christmas but let us remember of course it all started with one particular child. It should be a time of real celebration, to rejoice in the birth of Jesus and the good news that his birth brings to the earth.

The young woman I spoke to was solely focused on her son and her relationship with him. In the same way, if we get our priorities right then we will focus on God’s Son and our relationship with him. We should focus on the simple things and enjoy a special time with friends and family and take time out to appreciate their company, to enjoy the simple things that are on offer. Some of us might know of someone who will be on their own this Christmas, perhaps we could invite them to join us to share our celebrations with us.

May we all be blessed this Christmas with a time full of laughter, good food and good company and most important of all God’s love. God loves each one of us, so much that he sent his Son to earth, what an amazing event to celebrate! May the New Year present new and exciting opportunities for us as we continue along our journey of faith together. Christmas Blessings Teresa

A Letter from the Bishop of

Dear Friends, It was a bit of a reminder of where our world is with regard to Christmas, to find myself at the beginning of November, with other colleagues, before Remembrance Sunday, at a hotel already decked out with ‘Christmas decorations’ obviously ready for a full long season. It is easy to be slightly sniffy about such things (it was the same week that there was all of the media hype about what has become the annual and much-anticipated reveal of the John Lewis ‘Christmas Advert’) to write and complain about the commercialisation of Christmas. And yet at the heart of the ‘Christmas Season’ still, the heart without which everything else becomes incredibly empty, devoid of any meaning, is the celebration of the birth of a baby, announced by the angels to ordinary people. A baby who, it is said, will be the means of ‘peace on earth’. It can seem for many, as they look around our world at this point in time, a somewhat hollow promise. ‘Heaven on earth, we need it now’ sings Bono, the lead singer of U2 in their song ‘Peace on Earth’. ‘I’m sick of all of this hanging around. Sick of sorrow, sick of pain, sick of hearing again and again, that there’s gonna be, Peace on earth’. And for me that’s part of the challenge of Christmas. ‘And man will live for evermore, because of Christmas Day’ say the words of another Christmas song, and I believe that to be true – but I’m also challenged by the slogan of Christian Aid: ‘We believe in life before death’. Christmas can be a season of wonderful human hospitality and generosity, a time to eat, drink and generally be merry; but if that is all it is, then the promise of the angels, as Bono despairs, begins to feel more than a little thin. But an event that we both celebrate, and allow to shape who we are, and all that we do, as we stop and look at what that baby then did and taught in the rest of his life, that has power to change the world, to bring about the promise of the angels – and that is the gift I pray for our world this Christmas time. + David Grimsby – December 2016

COMMUNTIY EMERGENCY VOLUNTEER PLAN

The residents of Tetford & Salmonby have a good reputation for working together and the Parish Council is putting together a Community Emergency Volunteer Plan in order to pull everything together into one document - all the useful items located within the villages that residents would be willing to use to assist the plan, e.g. 4 x 4 vehicles for assisting people in an emergency in bad weather, tractors for perhaps moving fallen trees to clear roads and volunteers with a skill or profession that could help, i.e. Nursing, organisational etc. The document would be governed by Data Protection & any names included within it would be seen only by the Managing Team & Lincolnshire County Council’s Emergency Plan Team & not be public knowledge. It may be that during spells of exceptionally bad weather, elderly or vulnerable residents may require assistance of some kind – the plan would cover this, or if flooding occurred or if for any reason there was an emergency that affected the area. If you would be willing to put forward an item – i.e. vehicle, tractor, generator etc. or be a willing volunteer please either talk to one of the Councillors or contact the Parish Clerk for further details or to be entered into the plan.

Tetford St Mary’s Jumble Sale 22nd October Thank you so much everyone for all your contributions to our Jumble Sale – we were overwhelmed! There must be an awful lot of empty spaces in wardrobes, attics and lumber rooms now! On the day , the total taken was £307.05. Since jumble day, we (my trusty friend Marge and myself) have sold clothing, handbags and shoes to a second hand outlet and raised a further £45.50 and with a donation of £5, the final sum was £357.55 – amazing!! Thank you to the helpers on the day Shirley, Sue O, Sue P, Lesley, Julia, Val and Carole. A brilliant effort, everyone thank you. Last but not least thank you Paul for all the heavy work. Also a big thank you to all of you, who came and supported us.

Art and Craft Weekend 29/30th October Beautiful and varied paintings, fascinating handicrafts and gifts, and delicious cakes for a teatime treat. Many thanks to the stall holders, who despite the lack of customers (especially on Sunday), still remained cheerful and sanguine. It was a lovely atmosphere. Thanks also to Paul who helped to transport the boards and manhandle them in and out of the church. He is such an asset to the Group – and we really do appreciate his help and support. The weekend effort raised £232.90 for the Roof Fund – so not a complete disaster. Pam E.

TETFORD OUTREACH POST OFFICE – HAMILTON HALL – WEDNESDAY’S 1PM -3PM The outreach Post Office at Hamilton Hall has been quiet lately, hopefully it’s not because of my typing error in the last edition which might have sent you all to Thetford – so sorry! Hands up all who noticed the error? Hands up all who went to Thetford – Ha ha! Avoid the queues - buy your stamps, post parcels, purchase gift vouchers, pay bills and withdraw cash locally at Hamilton Hall without the problems of parking. The ladies will be back the last Wednesday in January 2017. Russ from the outreach Post Office, Chris, with her range of Phoenix Card products and Barbara with her range of affordable jewellery would like to say thank you all for your continued support and wish you all a Very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous and Peaceful New Year!

Shopping Evening 10th November The Edward Richardson PSFA would like to extend a massive 'Thank You' to everyone who supported the recent shopping event at Hamilton Hall. From stall holders, customers and helpers the night was a huge success with £570 raised for an exciting new project for the pupils. Thank you all.

Wednesday Club Quiz Thank you to all who supported the quiz on the 2nd November also to the Wednesday ladies for the refreshments. Thank you for all the raffle prizes donated and to Bob Sessions who conducted the raffle. Including later donations, a total of £240 was raised for the Lincs. Macmillan nurses. Many Thanks Andy Robinson

TETFORD VOLUNTEER GROUP The Tetford Volunteer Group has been busy lately. One group cut back the vegetation from the verge making the pavement on East Road a little wider. Unfortunately the autumn leaves fell down & swiftly covered up all the hard work done! It now looks a lot better, thanks to all involved, see you all again this time next year! Another group took part in a litter pick ranging from the Cross Keys out to the A158 at . Nine people took part, including a junior member of the community with his Dad – well done Edward! Incredibly, over 20 bags of rubbish were collected in the short distance of just over 4 miles. Sadly it shows what a “throwaway” society the world has become. During the pick, various drivers stopped to say “thank you” which was nice and one gentleman asked how to join the Volunteer Group, which was great! Tetford itself wasn’t covered during this outing as most litter seems to be picked up by caring residents/the litter fairies as they find it thank goodness. Again, many thanks to all those who took part. If you are new to the village and would like to join the Tetford Volunteer Group please contact me, Barbara Harden. My e-mail is [email protected] or my mobile is 07910 711177. How the group works is as follows: someone will suggest a job to be done in the village, cutting back a hedge, a litter pick, cutting back vegetation from pavements etc. I’ll send out an email asking for volunteers and when they’d be available and then coordinate a date & time and volunteers turn up. If you can’t make it that’s not a problem, there’s no pressure. The group is backed by Tetford & Salmonby Parish Council so up to 10 volunteers are covered under Public Liability Insurance at any one time. They also supply the Hi-Viz Vests. Normally people bring their own tools for the jobs. We do have age restraints – so sorry, but over 80’s are excluded – was that a huge sigh of relief I heard? Our logo is the men at work sign with a subtle difference! We are truly fortunate to live in a beautiful part of the country and the Tetford Volunteer Group, which now numbers over 20 members, likes to do its bit to help keep it that way. There are other unsung heroes within the community who do their own thing, cutting grass at the St Mary’s Church and Hamilton Hall - again, A Big Thank You to You All! I’ll be arranging a “WABURS” event soon – that’s a “wash and brush up road signs” so will be requesting volunteers then. Lastly, I’d like to wish you all A Happy Christmas and a Prosperous & Peaceful New Year! Thanks, Barbara

A Prayer for Christmas Give us, O God, the vision which can see Your love in the world in spite of human failure. Give us the faith to trust Your goodness in spite of our ignorance and weakness. Give us the knowledge that we may continue to pray with understanding hearts. And show us what each one of us can do to set forward the coming of the day of universal peace. Tetford and District Parish Council Councillor Louis presented the wreath on behalf of the Parish Council at the War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday. The Budget for 2017-2018 was again considered & adjustments made, the Council will be making its final decision in December but is considering raising the Precept in order to cover the cost of grass cutting for the villages as Lincolnshire County Council has withdrawn its grant & the Parish Council will have to cover the whole cost, a sum in the region of £1,700 per annum, the grant this year was £923.10 – the Council is very aware residents are keen to see the villages looking tidy; it also has to save for future election costs, previously paid by District Council who has now withdrawn funding, and places £500 into fixed reserves annually for this & the costs incurred by administration also have to be covered. The Council would not take this step lightly; it has reduced budgets wherever possible but the removal of services by County & District Councils inevitably places the burden to maintain them on Parish Councils. The Council has reduced its level of reserves inherited and will continue to do so. Planning Appeal – Brian Todd Homes – Land South of Upper Garth, Salmonby Road, Tetford – Appeal Reference APP/D2510/W/16/3160438 – following refusal by ELDC of outline erection of up to 7 dwellings (S/177/010467/16) appeal under Town & Country Planning Act 1990 Section 78. The Council makes no further comment. Planning Application – S/177/02135/16 – Ms L Westmoreland – Outline erection of 1 house & garage – land adjoining Woodland View, Mill lane, Tetford – the Council supported the application. Definitive Map Modification Order Proposal Tetford – Addition of Missing Link between Public Footpath 33 & North Road – there is as yet no resolution & residents are asked to submit forms supporting the link to Lincolnshire County Council Countryside Service if they support it. The Medals for Tetford & Salmonby Children to commemorate HM Queen Elizabeth II 90th Birthday are to be distributed at an event generously supported by the Events Committee, on Saturday 17th December, 2-4pm in Hamilton Hall – there will be entertainment - puppets/magic show & tea for the children – Parents are welcome to stay & enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. East Lindsey District Council is consulting, as it is required to do, on consideration by BT to remove of phone boxes in the area, including the one on South Road. The Council is objecting to its removal. The Volunteer Group cleared the verge on East Road & also carried out a litter pick from Tetford to High Toynton junction – filling 24 bags of rubbish on the latter! At the Council’s request Highways has agreed to place caution signs for horses on the bends near Grange Farm & the ends of Little . Please remember that there is a public session at the start of the meeting, your District & County Councillors attend and you have the opportunity to raise any items that concern you or require attention. Documents from the meeting are on the Parish Council web site. Residents are very welcome to attend Council meetings & the next one is on Wednesday 14th December at 7.30pm. Jean Brown, Clerk – [email protected] / 01507 481716 Edward Richardson Primary School Update: December 2016 The Autumn Terms have been a very successful time at the Edward Richardson Primary School. Work has continued apace and we have been able to involve our wider community in a variety of activities. Our annual ‘Help Your Child with Numeracy’ and ‘Help Your Child with Literacy’ evenings have been held (with the mathematics session exploring the implications of ‘mastery’ in the curriculum). The Parents Staff and Friends Association have held a ‘Harvest Auction and Quiz Night’ (auctioning produce from our Harvest Festival celebration for charity) and a Christmas Shopping event which was a great success (raising over £500 for PSFA funds). Key Stage 2 Children who are enrolled in the after school ‘Christmas Drama Club’ have been working hard since September on their major production of ‘What a Knight’. We are all looking forward to putting on this presentation for our community at the end of term. Key Stage 1 children will be presenting their own nativity play. The application process has now opened for Reception 2017 entrants. The online form can be completed up to 15th January. Any child born between 1st September 2012 and 31st August 2013 will be due to start school in September 2017 and their parents or carers should complete the process before the closing date.

More Newhome thoughts on Computers.

OK, well straight into this months subject, encrypted files. So what is one of those? Well simple really, it is an ordinary file that has a password to open it. Stop! Before you think not more passwords, not interested, this is actually a big help. You will have seen and some of you may have paid for password keepers, well here is how to create your own for free, and learn another useful trick at the same time. If you have a spreadsheet programme then you can use this to create a list of websites with their addresses and passwords, much like most of you hide them in your little book of secrets. The problem is that the spreadsheet is not very secret. This is where your encryption programme comes in. A very good and simple to use programme can be downloaded for free from, http://www.axantum.com/AxCrypt/Downloads.html It is called AxCrypt. If you type the link above into your web browser address bar and press enter it will take you to the download page. Assuming you are running Windows then you need this file. 32- or AxCrypt-1.7.3180.0- AxCrypt Old Full

64-bit Setup.exe 1.x Setup Yes I know what it says on the site but this is easy and that is what we all want. So download and install this file. Once it is installed you can now save your spreadsheet twice with two names so you have two files (just in case you get it wrong on the first practice). Now using 'Windows File Explorer' go to where you saved the file (probably in 'Documents'), and 'right click' on it. You will get a menu come up (remember 'left click' is 'do it' – 'right click' is 'menus'). From the menu choose 'AxCrypt – Encrypt'. You will now be asked for a password twice. Once this is done and you press OK the original file will disappear and reappear with the same name but a shield as the picture icon. To access the file, double click on it as normal and you will be asked for the password, put that in and 'Hey Presto' there is your file. You can edit and change the contents of the file, press save, close the file and it will remain encrypted, so it can only be opened if you have the password. So what is the point of all that? Well now you only need to remember one password, the one to the encrypted file with the whole list of passwords for everything else. We do suggest that you practice encrypting and opening encrypted files until you are familiar with it. Also remember to delete any unencrypted versions of the file, including from the bin. Keep copies of the encrypted file on a USB flash drive, both at home as well as a trusted friends (fire is your worst enemy). Remember to send any general questions to [email protected] for us to answer in next months edition. Otherwise I will try and cover how to create strong passwords you can remember without telling the bad guys how you did it. Steve and Mark

Leek and Bacon Gratin Ingredients: 8 large leeks, washed and sliced into 2 inch lengths 1 large carrot, peeled and sliced into 2 inch lengths 12 rashers of streaky bacon For the sauce: 1 oz butter 1 oz flour ½ pint of milk (full fat) Salt and freshly ground black pepper 2 oz Cheddar cheese, grated To finish: 2 oz Cheddar cheese, grated 2 oz fresh white breadcrumbs

Method: Cook the sliced leeks and carrots in boiling, slightly salted water to cover for 10 to 15 minutes or until tender. Drain, reserving the liquid and turn into a buttered flameproof casserole. Meanwhile prepare the sauce. Melt the butter in a pan, stir in the flour and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove the pan from the heat and gradually add the milk and 150 ml or ¼ pint of the liquid from the vegetables, stirring constantly. Return the pan to the heat. Bring slowly to the boil stirring all the time. Lower the heat, add the seasoning to taste and simmer gently until the sauce thickens. Remove from the heat and stir in the 2 oz cheese. Grill the bacon rashers, arrange on top of the leeks and carrots and cover with the sauce. Sprinkle thickly with the mixed cheese and breadcrumbs. Pour over the drippings from the grilled bacon and place the dish under a hot grill until the surface is golden-brown and crisp. Serve immediately.

Brinkhill Christmas Bazaar I would like to thank everyone involved in making the Brinkhill Christmas Bazaar such a success. The Craft Group worked together and I am sure everyone will agree that the effort was worth it. The raffle raised £80 and the Christmas Hamper was won by Shirley Hewitt. The stall fees brought in £50 and this means that the Ark Animal Rescue Centre will be receiving a cheque for £130.00, however I have also been promised a small donation for the Centre so I will wait until I receive that and then send the cheque. I will make sure everyone sees the receipt once it arrives. I would like to give a special thanks to Pearl for her beautiful floral displays and the lovely wreath that adorns the church door and the display in the porch. It was wonderful to watch her put them together. Thanks also to Pam for her Mulled Wine - I cannot tell you how welcome that was. Each and everyone of you from Brinkhill, Tetford and all around, that helped - organising the advertising, or serving teas, or having a stall or just coming to support us from has helped raise money for rescued animals, so well done everyone.
