‘Christmas windows are crucial in my life.’ – mural artist SHERRI CARROLL CHRISTMAS EFFORT 750 local Windows on the season families’ Christmas brightened By KATIE MINTZ The Daily Journal Before sunrise today, enough milk, eggs and butter for 750 Christmas dinners will be hauled into Carl Purdy Hall at the Redwood Empire Fairgrounds, where the Ukiah Valley Christmas Effort’s final preparations are under way. Then, turkeys will be added to the boxes of toys and food to be delivered to families in need throughout the valley participating in this year’s effort. But the boxes won’t be shuttled into awaiting cars and trucks until they undergo a final check to see that everything is there. According to Shirley Grover, president of the Christmas Effort -- Ukiah Valley’s longest running service project at more than 50 years -- much like Santa Claus himself, volunteers make lists for what each box should hold, and check them twice. Each of the 750 families that qualified for the program through financial need receive all the fixings for a Christmas dinner plus other food items and two gifts for each child in the household -- from infants to 17-year-

25 years ago Thursday, Dec. 24, 1981 Ukiah Daily Journal OT GROWERS STAGE REHAB CENTER CONCERT. An association of marijuana growers put on a volunteer rock Pand roll Christmas concert at the Mendocino County Rehabilitation Center, where some of the inmates were serving time for pot busts. The concert Wednesday night included a 7-piece band, com- posed of members of the Marijuana Grower’s Association, which performed two hours of rock music for the medium-security pris- oners. “What the heck,” said Sheriff Tom Jondahl. “It really doesn’t make any difference who did it. It was a Christmas show for pris- oners which was kind of nice. I can’t recall us having live music before. It was free and we’d only do it for a holiday.” The growers association, which consists of hundreds of fami- lies, was formed to put excess profits from pot growing ventures into alternative technology and energy businesses, said spokesman Bart Kaplan. ——— RESOLUTION RUN COMING UP. The North Coast Striders are now preparing for their second year which will kick-off with the January 3rd Resolution Run. Their inaugural year proved to be a big success but in 1982 they’ll be shooting for an even greater year of running events. Prayer is time- less, and this one, especially applicable today, will remain so for as long as man inhabits the earth. Lord, Make me an instrument of thy Peace. Where there is Hatred, Let me sow Love, Where there is Injury, Pardon, Where there is Doubt, Faith, Where there is Despair, Hope, Where there is Darkness, Light, Where there is Sadness, Joy. 100 years ago Friday, Dec. 21, 1906 Dispatch-Democrat SHOULD PATRONIZE HOME MERCHANTS. Ukiah mer- chants have never in the history of the town had a more magnifi- cent display of holiday goods than are on exhibition this week. Every window in town is resplendent in holiday garb and the mul- titude of suitable goods for the Christmas trade covers a range extensive enough to fit the purse of rich or poor. Our merchants have been reaping a great harvest this season as the difficulty in securing goods in the city has compelled those who have usually done their Christmas shopping in San Francisco to rely upon the stock of the home merchants to satisfy their demands. To these people the experience has been an eye opener. They never realized before that they could do so well at home, and the merchants will profit therefrom in the future. ——— CHRISTMAS SERVICES. There will be Christmas services at St. John’s M. E. Church, next Sunday. Morning theme, “The Wise Men of the East.” Evening theme, “Shall Herod or Jesus be King?” The following music will be rendered at the morning service: Voluntary, Mrs. Mable Smith; Anthem, “And there were Shepherds;” Hymns, “Creation, Silent Night;” Baritone Solo, “Callest Thou Me On! Master?” Rev. W. B. Burton; Anthem, “The Story of Old.” ——— CUPID COMPLAINS OF POOR BUSINESS. Mrs. C. H. White, who is Cupid’s exclusive agent in this county, complains that business in her line is not keeping up with what should be expected during the glad holiday season. She points out that the merchants and others are doing an immense volume of business and that surely one would expect the wily little god of love to keep ahead of sordid and platonic venders of holiday wares. She is dis- appointed that such is not the case, as she has issued so far this month only fifteen licenses to marry as against twenty-two last month. She is hopeful that the remaining days of the month will show a rush of business appropriate with the spirit of the season. Jody Martinez can be reached at [email protected].
