Athletes took full advantage of the Last Chance track-and-field meet on Saturday at the Vance Toner Stadium on the Université de Moncton campus.

The meet was the last opportunity for athletes to break provincial records in

2015, and for many their last chance before moving up an age class.

A total of 19 New Brunswick records, one stadium record and one Université de

Moncton record were set.

Clint Steeves of Riverglade took advantage of his last performances as a youth athlete to break his own New Brunswick record in the 60-metre hurdles with a time of 8.59 seconds, beating his former record of 8.79 set at the Canadian indoor championships last February.

Annick Leger of Dieppe broke the provincial bantam girls record with a best throw of 7.41 metres, breaking Jillan Beck’s record of 6.61 metres set in 2014.

Kyla Hughes of Cocagne smashed the midget girls weight throw record with a best throw of 10.25 metres, breaking Beck’s record of 7.92 set earlier this year.

Sophie Black of Dieppe tied the midget girls 60-metre hurdle record with a time of 9.99. Annick Picard ran this exact same time back in 1993.

Jennifer Bell of Chaplin Island Road, near Miramichi, broke the senior women’s record with a throw of 12.98 metres, beating Alexondra Black’s record of

12.58 set in 2013.

Mickyle Welsh of Riverview broke his own midget boys 60 metres record with a time of 7.34, breaking his record of 7.36 set at last month’s Gagetown Indoor

Meet.

Liam Turgeon of Tide Head broke the junior men’s shot put record with a final throw of 14.44 metres, beating Mitch Quigg’s record of 14.33 metres set in 2011. Turgeon also broke the junior men’s weight throw record of 16.10 metres, set by

Aaron LeBlanc in 2013, with a throw of 17.52 metres.

Jonathan Gionet of Bathurst broke his own senior men’s shot put record with a throw of 15.11 metres, beating his former record of 14.86 metres set in Gagetown last month.

Dennis Furlong of Dalhousie broke the master men’s ages 70-75 60 metres record with a time of 9.95, the shot put record with a best of 8.93 metres and set new records in the with a time of 1:39.93, the with a best of 3.11 metres, the 1,000 metres with a time of 5:18.02, and the pentathlon with a score of 672.

Edna Thibodeau of Moncton set a new record in the master women’s 90-94 shot put with a throw of 3.15 metres.

The Université de Moncton women’s 4x800 metre relay team broke the school record with a time of 10:37.02, beating the old record set 32 years ago by half a second. Team members were Anouk Pelletier of Petit-Rocher, Amy-Lynn Grant of

Bathurst, Kamylle Frenette of Dieppe and Carol-Anne Macdonald of Irishtown.

Among other results, Jessica Shannon of Halifax broke the 60-metre hurdle stadium record with a time of 9.13, beating New Brunswicker and teammate Sarah Taplin’s record of 9.14 set at the Atlantic University Sport conference championships last March.

Fallon Forde of ran a time of 6.85 in the 60-metre preliminaries and

6.97 to win the senior men’s final.

The competition marked the last track-and-field meet in New Brunswick for 2015. The next meet is the Moncton Open on Jan. 16.
