  • HBO: Brand Management and Subscriber Aggregation: 1972-2007
1 HBO: Brand Management and Subscriber Aggregation: 1972-2007 Submitted by Gareth Andrew James to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English, January 2011. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ........................................ 2 Abstract The thesis offers a revised institutional history of US cable network Home Box Office that expands on its under-examined identity as a monthly subscriber service from 1972 to 1994. This is used to better explain extensive discussions of HBO‟s rebranding from 1995 to 2007 around high-quality original content and experimentation with new media platforms. The first half of the thesis particularly expands on HBO‟s origins and early identity as part of publisher Time Inc. from 1972 to 1988, before examining how this affected the network‟s programming strategies as part of global conglomerate Time Warner from 1989 to 1994. Within this, evidence of ongoing processes for aggregating subscribers, or packaging multiple entertainment attractions around stable production cycles, are identified as defining HBO‟s promotion of general monthly value over rivals. Arguing that these specific exhibition and production strategies are glossed over in existing HBO scholarship as a result of an over-valuing of post-1995 examples of „quality‟ television, their ongoing importance to the network‟s contemporary management of its brand across media platforms is mapped over distinctions from rivals to 2007.

  • The Gulf War Aesthetic? Certain Tendencies in Image, Sound and the Construction of Space in Green Zone and the Hurt Locker
The Gulf War Aesthetic? Certain Tendencies in Image, Sound and the Construction of Space in Green Zone and The Hurt Locker Kingsley Marshall Submitted to the University of East Anglia as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Film. University of East Anglia School of Art, Media & American Studies January 2018 This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. Word Count: 84983 Abstract This thesis argues that the perception of realism and ‘truth’ within narrative feature films set within the Gulf War (1990-1991) and Iraq War (2003-2011) is bound up in other transmedia representations of these conflicts. I identify and define what I describe as the Gulf War Aesthetic, and argue that an understanding of the ‘real life’ of the war film genre through its telling in news reportage, documentary and combatant-originated footage serves as a gateway through which the genre of fictional feature films representing the conflicts and their aftermath is constructed. I argue that the complexity of the Iraq War, coupled with technological shifts in the acquisition and distribution of video and audio through online video-sharing platforms including YouTube, further advanced the Gulf War Aesthetic. I identify The Hurt Locker (Bigelow, 2009) and Green Zone (Greengrass, 2010) as helpful case studies to evidence these changes, and subject both to detailed analysis.

  • Steve's Film Festival Reviews 1993
Steve’s Film Festival Reviews 1993 [These reviews have been reformatted for Word. Note that there was a hiatus of reviews from 1988 to 1992, and this edition marks a return to publication.] September 23, 1993 (Rev.) (again) Yes, it's that time of year again, and I am actually going to publish my reviews this year, something I had fallen out of the habit of doing. Having promised this epic to so many people, now I have to deliver. The films are reviewed in the order in which I saw them, and so there is no pride of place to a review coming first or last. I have done this to give non-Festival goers something of the feeling of the ups and downs of attending the Festival -- the days you wish you had stayed in bed as well as those where the films just get better and better. My apologies to those of you who have heard pieces of some of the reviews before. It is an inevitable fact that when people ask you about what you have seen, you develop a canned response after a while, and some of those are here. Have patience and read on. Friday, September 10th ______________________ (1) "A Foreign Field", GB, Charles Sturridge, 1993. ___________________________________________________ This film looks interesting in the program -- Alec Guinness, Leo Kern, Jeanne Moreau, Lauren Bacall; distributed by The Sales Company, a usually reliable source of English films. Premise: two old soldiers (English and American) are off to France to look up an old flame from WWII who was a ministering angel of mercy to them in hospital (and probably a bit more as well), and who are both convinced that she loved only them.

  • A Carnivalesque Analysis of the Monster Child from Early Slapstick to the Nazified Children of Modern Horror
BEWARE! CHILDREN AT PLAY: A CARNIVALESQUE ANALYSIS OF THE MONSTER CHILD FROM EARLY SLAPSTICK TO THE NAZIFIED CHILDREN OF MODERN HORROR Submitted by Craig Alan Frederick Martin, BA (Hons), MA https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8596-6482 A thesis submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2020 Faculty of Arts, School of Culture and Communication, Screen and Cultural Studies Program The University of Melbourne Abstract Monster child narratives often use a formula in which normative power relations between adults and children are temporarily inverted as the child outsmarts the adult, leading to a rupture in the social order. Where children are ordinarily subordinate to adults, this relationship is reversed as the monster child exerts dominance over their elders. Applying Mikhail Bakhtin’s carnival theory, this thesis argues that the monster child figure commonly thought of as a horror movie villain began its life on screen in early silent screen comedy. Through qualitative analysis of a range of case study films from the silent era through to the emergence of horror-themed monster child films produced in the mid- 1950s, close comparative analysis of these texts is used to support the claim that the monster children in early silent comedies and later modern horror films have a shared heritage. Such a claim warrants the question, why did the monster child migrate from comedy to horror? The contention put forward in this thesis is that during World War II dark representations of Hitler Youth in Hollywood wartime propaganda films played a significant role in the child monster trope moving from comedy to horror.
