Actor/director Robert Rae Lewis shot his debut movie in the town and hopes that it will find favour with the critics when it goes on show at festivals around the world. It costs £360 for a team of four and proceeds go to raise funds for research into understanding cancer and improving treatment for patients. Call Natalie Childs-Fielding, events fundraiser, on 0151 343 4300 or email natalie.childs- [email protected] Speeding on the agenda MERSEYSIDE Police have been busy responding to people’s concerns over the last month. After receiving complaints about motorists speeding on Frankby Road and Blackhorse Hill in West Kirby, officers have carried out speeding ‘Spotlight’ days in targeted locations. During the operation, officers look out for other traffic fences,of including not wearing a seatbelt or using a mobile phone while driving. In the first two weeks of March, 19 motorists have been reported for various offences. The spotlight days will continue throughout the summer months. People riding bicycles on pavements were causing concern so police increased their own cycle patrols in West Kirby and Hoylake, paying particular attention to the shopping centres. In addition they have continued to issue warnings on the first occasion to offenders. On any subsequent occasion the offenders will receive a fixed penalty ticket or be summonsed tocourt. l The new mobile surgeries for the West Kirby and Thurstaston Ward will be held in a Mobile Police Station on the first Tuesday of every month at Gilroy Road Shops 9am - 11am, Newton Village Hall 11am - 1pm, Thurstaston Country Park - 2pm - 4pm and Caldy (Croft Drive car park entrance) - 4pm - 5pm. The next surgeries take place on 4th May, followed by 1st June, 6th July and 3rd August. l LAST month a 20-year-old man from St Helens pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking in Bridge Road, West Kirby, in January. He was jailed for six weeks, banned from driving for 12 months, ordered to serve a curfew for three months and ordered to pay £150 compensation to the victim. l A 43-year-old man admitted possessing cannabis at Grange Road, West Kirby. He was fined £50and ordered to pay £85 costs. l A 42-year-old man, from Eaton Road, West Kirby, was convicted of common assault in Hilbre Road, West Kirby, in November 2009. He was conditionally discharged for six months, ordered to pay £50 compensation and £320 in costs. Ambulance concerns QUESTIONS remain over whether West Wirral has adequate ambulance cover. It was revealed in the local press that the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) was to remove the rapid response vehicle from West Kirby Fire Station. The loss of the vehicle raised some eyebrows, with West Kirby councillor Jeff Green querying the move. But NWAS say that the vehicles in Heswall, Wallasey and Ellesmere Port are sufficient to cover the area. What do you call a man with a spade stuck to his head?     Wirral Rights of Way Newsletter - January 2019: This newsletter provides an update on work carried out in 2018 and sets out what is planned for 2019. The Wirral Public Rights Of Way network continues to be maintained to enhance the public’s access to the 75 miles of public rights of way, plus a further 25 miles of permissive footpaths, bridleways and off-road cycle tracks. This is in addition to the 15 miles of the Wirral Way within Wirral Country Park from West Kirby to Hooton. The overall aim of promoting and maintaining these historic public routes is to provide an accessible recreational facility, helping to improve health and wellbeing as well as connectivity to employment for Wirral residents and visitors alike, whilst also making a contribution to the area’s visitor economy. England Coastal Path: This is a substantial project to improve walking access around Wirral and throughout 2019, I as the Wirral Council’s Rights of Way / Local Paths Liaison Officer will continue to work with Natural England to deliver the 18 mile Wirral section from Birkenhead to the Cheshire border. This new national trail of 2,700 miles around the coast of England will be the longest coastal path in the world when it is completed in 2020 or thereabouts. Following many site visits and meetings with landowners and other relevant groups and organisations around the Wirral, it is expected that the report laying out the proposals for the Birkenhead to the Welsh border section will be published in the Spring. There is a full and varied walks programme throughout the festival, with short walks around some of our historic villages to longer ‘treks’ through the Wirral countryside and around the coast.     Dear School Over recent weeks the bus operator Selwyn’s have reported numerous incidents of window damage to their vehicles due to low-hanging tree branches. The matter has been raised with Wirral Highways and the locations identified in order for them to begin the tree cutting process. Due to the health & safety implications, Selwyn’s wish to divert services away from these locations until the remedial works have taken place to avoid the risks associated with the low-hanging trees. Therefore all Merseytravel supported services that operate with double deck vehicles along the locations identified will be diverted from Monday 7th October 2019. In order to minimise disruption, services have been revised to allow students to board their service as near to their current boarding stop. This may mean that some journeys are delayed during this period as journey time maybe longer to and from school. Below is a list of those services affected and the diversion route they will take until further notice. Merseytravel would request you share the details of this with parents so that they can make an informed decision about the travel opportunities for their children and prepare for the changes starting on Monday Merseytravel, Selwyn’s and Wirral Highways are working to ensure that the disruption to services is minimal and resolved as soon as possible. Once the works have been undertaken by the council we will communicate to you a specific date when diversions will be removed. Sajid Javid MP Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government Department for Communities and Local Government Fry Building 2 Marsham Street London SW1P 4DF 1st August 2016 Dear Mr. Javid I am writing to request the intervention of the DCLG to enforce the Code of Practice for Local Authority Publicity following a decision by the Authority’s Cabinet to publish a monthly newspaper and deliver this to all households and businesses in the Borough. We note that the Department has issued notice to several authorities following similar such publications, notably the Royal Borough of Greenwich. We believe that Wirral Council’s publication (up to 34 pages, produced monthly, distribution of 170,000 copies to every household in the parliamentary constituencies of Wirral West, Wirral South, Wallasey and Birkenhead) is in clear breach of the Code. The cost to the taxpayer of producing this publication will be £237,000 per annum, with around 20% of the publication allocated to commercial advertising, thus affecting the independent press and media in the Borough. When this idea was agreed by Cabinet we were clearly concerned that the proposal would contravene the guidance set out in the Recommended Code of Practice for Local Authority Publicity, specifically the frequency of publication and that it was an inappropriate use of taxpayers’ money. We therefore used the appropriate provisions in the Council’s constitution to ‘Call-in’ the decision.
